1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Point, line and plane are basic elements that form architecture structure. Frame and infill work together to fill in structure and highlight important parts of a architecture. Finally, mass is a idea that to use daylight, different materials, earth and surrounding natural environments to shape a space, which could produce unique users experiences, rather than creating shapes and artificial light for a architecture to achieve these destinations. These three ideas are linked with each other and need to be considered from the beginning of designing conception to the end of model construction.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

China Pavilion by Jingtang He, 2007

In my design, individual lines to form a curving plane. Looking from back, it is like a fluctuant mountian ridge and the vertical columns are in the same plane. However, when people walk closer, they will find all the columns are in different planes to form a 3D space. Latticed wood columns block the views of behind passersby by from far distance, which increases people’s interest about what is in front of those standing columns. The material I choose is wood which is natural and simple. The constructing technique is referenced from an ancient constructing artistry in China which is joggle joint. China Pavilion in EXPO 2010 also makes joggle joint as part of its designing to show a combination of traditional Chinese artistry and modern culture. In week 2’s studio, Alessia gave a commend that using less elements for a designing could achieve stronger concept expression. Thus I improved my design by changing timber

1.2 FRAME & INFILL For this stage of designing, I designed a place for people to hide and enjoy their secrets, which is like a treasure box. Their is only one entrance and people should use the same gate to walk out. This setting is for express the concept of this design, which is “Begining is the end, and end is the begining“. People are borned and die coming from nothing and going to nothing. What makes life meaningful are own feelings and gainings during the life journey, which are different from people to people. Thus one way in and same way out becomes the phisical expression of this idea. By learning POINT/LINE/PLANE, I had the understanding that frames are formed with lines and infill will work as planes to connect lines. So I started to think how frame could form plane to better work with infill. To correspond to the concept in the same time, I choose sixangle shape which could be formed by six rectangular frames and every six frames will form a new sixangle frame both at the top and the bottom of this pavilion. The infill I use is coloured glaze. When people stand outside it, the inside could not be easily seen because of coloured glaze and lack of openings. People inside will have a strong light effect feeling and this triangle pattern on glaze will become interesting changable shadow. Red, yellow and blue is three-primary colours which also fits my concept . Since they are original and natural.

1.3 MASS

Original Idea Section Work by Bingqing Zhang, 2015

Light is an important element that shapes a space. Earth has much for architects to explore and reshape for designing. I make the underground space to be light space and the gound space to be dark space. People in dark space use hand to touch, use ear to hear and use body to feel. The ground space I designed is for people to feel in this way. People could touch the ceiling. Light space has great light effect to work with a group of columns which are in shape of a city. Light comes and goes produces different “city skyline, people inside underground space are just like in another world. This world is owned by people who inside which provides a personal space for users to think and relax.

2.0 CONCEPT MASS 3D MODEL 2.1 DIGITIZATION & Design Development Intro

I kept the idea of making a personal world for users. Column group in the shape of big at bottom and small at top is stable structuraly. For this idea, light in “city is quite important. Since it is a place where users are part of the visual and mental effect of this design, I made the light hole on the ground could be walked on. People who are going to the entrance should walk across a maze and pass those light hole. When they step on light holes, the change of light line at underground space will be fascinating.

People Standing on the light hole on ground take part in the effect of light in underground space

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is a manmade island with a history of Australian aborigines. There are numbers of inteserting sculptures and landscape designing on the island. Paths on Herring Island are confused and people are encouraged to find their own enjoyable way while traveling on this island. Although it is an island on river, people could reach water and have a good view of the opposite bank only at the entrance and northwest part of the island. The west corner of Herring Island is a good choise for build a pavilion which could have an integrated land for constructing and a good view of both two branches of river and the beautiful bridge in not far distance. When it comes to sunset in a day time, red sunlight will go through the bridge and shines on this site. For the noise coming from roads at north and south bank of the river, it will be decreased while passing above water which will not be an issue for users to enjoy in this site.

Work by Bingqing Zhang, 2015

The initial conceptacle I came up with is to make the full of water, land slope, sunlight and the surrounding natural environments. Rather than stay on land, the pavilion could have more connection with water, which will reflect light and provide a different feeling compared with standing on land. And it will be interesting if people could not only look from the pavilion to surrounding scene but look back where they come from and what they have been standing on. I would like to produce this kind of users experience in this site.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

I kept the initial conceptacle and put it forward to the final conceptacle, which is mirror symmetry. By using mirror symmetry for building ceiling and underground space, it will be a good angle for people who look at the small world in this pavilion to have a think of the real world they live in. The concept of the whole design will be confusion and self-finding. Life is full of unknown, it looks like complicated but essentially very simple - a breathe, a drop of tear coming into being, a moment that people fall in love with someone and so on. The secret I would like to hide and tell in my design is people themselves. It will be a place for people to look at themselves and think of who they are and what they are looking for.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

In week 8’s studio, Alessia gave a suggestion on the use of mirror symmetry. It will be stronger to show the concept if the ground space and underground space are entirely symmetrical. And the undergruond space is a more interesting part than ground space, it should be better developed. So I made the two spaces entirely symmetrical and in the meantime add another element which is mirror for better light effect. Mirror also corresponds to conceptacle mirror symmetry. Some columns in ceiling are missiong for people to see the sky. And the columns in underground space that corresponds to this location are set mirror surface. All the columns on ceiling are set mirror surface at the bottem facing wlking people beneath. When people head up, they see a light comes from far high sky and themselves in all these mirrors. To keep water as part of this pavilion, two symmetrical “column city” are set at the front of pavilion and the backside, which is the side above water. People can walk inside the columns and seat in columns to look out from this pavilion. People could also look back to the pyramid part and see the sky light on its exterior skin.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS

Learning from suggestions by Alessia, the final design delected the two symmetrical “column city part and simplify elements. To keep the main concept more clear and stronger. I chose many constracting elements to achieve the confusion and self-finding feeling that this pavilion will gave to users. Becaude contract builds up a strong feeling of missing, at this point, the natural reactions and self-thinking wil be aroused. The constracting elements include simple facade and complicated interior columns structure, dark and light, sky and underground space. The whole architecture is constructed with wood columns to keep it natural and simple. At the entrance of this pavilion, there are some columns in different height in a line to lead people to come in. After entering, people are able to walk down along the columns in different heights. Some areas are narrow and con only be explored by children. After a while of thinking and experience, people could come out though the opening at the end and leave this dark space to enjoy the bright river view and have a seat at the platform. When people look back to where they come from, they will find it is still in its simple shape which is same with life and the world they live in.

4.0 REFLECTION In this semester of learning studio: earth, Lecturer and tutors help us to study from basic idea of architectural designing thinking. Three stages of designing thinking are based on the understanding and exercises of POINT/LINE/PLANE, FRAME & INFILL, and MASS. I found these part of study quite helpful to me on developing architectural designing thinking, exploring the use of materials, drawing and model making. Rather than straightly coming up with the whole idea, to think from the basement of a architecture which are the points, lines and planes that build up it is a good beginning. From simple to complex, there are many aspects architectural designers should consider: how daylight could be part of the architecture? How to make full of earth? Overall, I found it is very happy to see my improvement on using more elements and concepts in my architectural study process. The task of using architectural softwares such as Rhino, InDesign and Photoshop, and 3D Printer is a new experience for me. By learning using these things, the methods of making designing thinking into real are wider for me to choose. And I believe in the future, it will show more benefits for me. Although 3D drawing is a hard work for me, I tried my best to do it for several times and have seen my improvement. My tutor Alessia is a helpful and nice teacher. She always gives me brilliant feedback which helps a lot on the future development of my design. She also pointed out not only is the physical look of a architcture important, the users feelings and environmental effect are vital as well. This gives me hint when I did my design. For the final deisgn result, the two guest tutors were giving good advices as well. My design still has some parts need to be improved. The structure and stability of my pavilion may be rethought. It may be better to have some columns raise up from ground of underground space to the ceiling which could provide braced force and in the same time do not break integrality of mirror symmetry.
