Michael is retired from Caterpillar in South Milwaukee. When he started working there it was Bucyrus-Erie. He loves retirement because he says now every day is a Saturday and he makes the most of it. His interests include fishing, bowling, Bingo of course, some friendly gambling in the valley at Potowatomie Hotel and Casino, but most of all he enjoys spending quality time with his grandchildren. He even has one who was recently born in Manchester, England and that family is moving to Ireland. Talk about an International Grandpa. He has 8 grandchildren in all.

When it comes to Bingo, Michael loves the competion. He says, “The most excitement comes when you get down to the last number, THE FEELING IS GOLDEN”. And he said, “Feel free to quote me!”.

Michael is also a fan of the city of Franklin. As of next week, he will have lived there for 40 years.

He moved there in April of 1981.

Just talking to him you get the definite impression that he loves life and just about everything that comes with it. He said, “I’m 67 and I want to live to 135 so I’m about half way there”.

Goodness Prevails Dear Aunt Bingo, (This letter is in response to several points in a previous column about stealing).

First, regarding the woman whose dauber was stolen…I just wanted you and your readers to know that there are still honest Bingo players out there. I carry my daubers in a small metal lunch box to Bingo here in Las Vegas. I’ve lived here for 44 years and have been playing Bingo for that many years here. I was very upset when I was home and discovered that I had left the box on the chair at the Bingo parlor. I don’t play every day, but the next time I went the box had been turned in to the Bingo managers by a Bingo player and they remembered that it was mine, so they held onto it till the next time I went. I was very pleased.

Second, it was mentioned in another letter about monitors that show the Bingo ball as it is called.

In Las Vegas now, you don’t see the “actual ball” that is called on the

monitor; everything is done using a computer and you see a digital facsimile. Of course, if you want, you can sit up close to the caller and see the balls as they bounce around in the chamber.

I’ve never had any doubts that everything is fine with the new type of monitors. I did enjoy the older way better, but the world is all computers now. I just feel that some people are lucky at Bingo and others not. My husband was very lucky at Bingo. We would always play the same color of cards and the same amount and he would Bingo lots. I, on the other hand, wouldn’t.

Now that he is gone, I still enjoy playing Bingo, but will go months between winning and then usually will split with several in the room.

That’s just Bingo. It’s still fun!

Name withheld, Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Vegas, It’s good to hear that your Bingo lunch box was returned to you. It had to be a huge relief.

Your story reminded me of the time I left a thick envelope of coupons at the grocery checkout and didn’t realize it until hours later.

When I returned to the store, I was dismayed to see that the cashier was gone for the day but delighted when I found out she had turned in my envelope at the customer service desk where it was safely waiting for me!

These little experiences reinforce our belief in the innate goodness of our fellow human beings— something we need to keep in mind when the less good among us get up to no good. —Aunt Bingo

News on Debt Repayments The Department of Veterans Affairs, which recently announced an extension of home loan forbearance, has now added to the list of available financial help. Due to the pandemic, debt collection of VA benefits overpayments and medical copayments has been suspended until Sept. 30 for those debts incurred after April 1, 2020.

The VA will notify veterans of the status of their debt, but while you wait on that communication from the VA, the particulars can be found online. Go to www.va.gov/ manage-va-debt/ and sign in with your DS Logon, My HealtheVet or ID.me accounts. If you don’t have an ID.me, you can create one right there on the page.

Once logged in, you’ll be able to check on debts for GI Bill or other education benefits, disability compensation or veteran pension.

(Family members cannot use this tool.) You’ll find information on the

It’s officially spring! But depending on where you are in our lovely nation, you could be experiencing decidedly un-springlike weather -- False Spring, Second Winter or even The Pollening, which is where I am now, covered in a fine yellow dust. The plants and flowers are waking up from their slumber and getting ready to put on a show. If you’re not there yet, here are a few movies featuring delightful greenery to help put you in the mood.

Greenfingers — Very loosely based on a true story, this little British gem centers around the unlikely tale of Colin Briggs (Clive Owen), a close-mouthed lad serving out his sentence in a minimum-security prison. He accidentally discovers he’s quite successful at raising flowers, and

amount and status of the debt, what you can do about it and any letters the VA has sent you.

Once the payment suspension is lifted at the end of September, repayment will be made as painless as possible. You’ll have four choices: 1) monthly offsets (they hold back a certain amount of your benefits), 2) small monthly payments (if you don’t get benefits), 3) you make a compromise offer and pay a smaller amount, or 4) the debt is waived. For the last two, you’ll need to fill out a Financial Status Report (VA Form 5655).

When you visit the debt management page, be sure to click the plus (+) signs. They open up much more information under each question.

If you need help from the Debt Management Center, call them weekdays at 800-827-0648, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET. They’re apparently slammed with calls and suggest you call Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, or from 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET. is assigned to be supervisor of the prison garden, along with his cellmate Fergus (David Kelly).

Their collective success gets them noticed by local celebrity (Helen Mirren) and a bid at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

A Little Chaos — As King Louis XIV’s chosen architect for the gardens of Versailles, Andre La Notre (Matthew Schoenaerts) wants something spectacular. He finds it in the designs of Sabine De Barre, a female gardener and designer, played by Kate Winslet.

The pair overcome court intrigue and their own personal demons to create life and emotion and magic from earth and plants and water.

Edward Scissorhands — Johnny Depp plays the titular Edward, a humanoid creation of the Inventor (Vincent Price). Tragically, the Inventor dies before he can fix Edward’s hands, which are made from many pairs of scissors. But Edward is wholly innocent and sweet, so when he is discovered in a Gothic mansion and brought into suburban America, he uses his scissor hands to, among other things, trim the neighborhood hedges into elaborate topiaries.

The Karate Kid — It’s a rough move from New Jersey to Reseda, California, and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) sets out to make friends the best way he can.

Unfortunately, the local dojo is populated with no-good bullies, who make a beeline for Daniel.

Enter Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), who not only takes Daniel under his wing and teaches him self-defense (and self-respect), but has an unforgettable, Okinawa-flavored oasis parked in the middle of what looks like a junkyard, where Daniel gets to train and work.

Near Misses

The Best of the Bingo Sisters

It all started one day on our way to Bingo. We stopped by the gas station to fill up and I went in to pay while Kate put in gas and cleaned the windshield. I stepped aside to let an elderly lady go ahead of me, as Kate wasn’t quite done filling up.

I was thinking about buying a lotto ticket, but the little old lady bought one first and got an instant win of one thousand dollars! “That ticket should have been mine,” I said to Kate, getting back in the car. “Why ever did I let her go first?”

“Because it was the polite thing to do,” replied Kate. “Just like our momma taught us.” We laughed but the incident rankled a little. I don’t easily give up on what I think is rightfully mine.

Driving on, we entered the freeway at a difficult spot and were just barely able to miss an accident

MAY 2021 in the process of happening. The car ahead of us was sideswiped by a car on the freeway and they both spun off onto the merge to a sound almost too terrible to recall. Kate deftly kept out of everyone’s way and we drove on, not wishing to add to the immediate congestion.

As soon as possible, she pulled over and began to shake as the aftermath of what had almost happened hit her. We switched places so that I could drive, and she could regain her composure.

“Do you want to go home?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “Let’s go on and play Bingo. I need to do something fun after that.”

I agreed that diversion could only help and besides we had both been looking forward to this particular session. Boys and Girls Club Bingo was offering a very special game time with numerous prizes in addition to the regular money payoffs. One prize in particular that Kate especially wanted to win was a trip to Las Vegas to be drawn for at intermission.

She stood in line to buy in while I went to find places for us to sit.

The hall was crowded, and I looked up to see Kate talking animatedly to a man in line behind her. She seemed to have formed a new friendship and brought him with her to where I was waiting.

“This is Michael,” she said “and it’s his first time at Bingo so we’re gonna help him get started.”

Michael was a tall, balding man with bright brown eyes and a big smile and difficult to picture being

on his own. “I have a girlfriend,” he explained, “but she works nights and I get tired of television and just hanging around the house, so I thought I’d try Bingo.”

“Good idea,” I said, and we helped him get his cards organized and loaned him a dauber.

“Where’s your drawing ticket?” asked Kate, rummaging through his stuff. “It’s red and you have to put your name on one half and put it in the basket.” She helped him do this while I filled out ours. She also helped with his pick 8 and filled in the numbers for him as he didn’t have a clue.

The games started. I was on for the first blackout, which I didn’t win. Kate was on for the second game, also a non-winner. This was the way the evening went. One or the other of us would get on but someone else would win. It was pretty frustrating. When the pick 8 game came up, Michael won with the numbers Kate had selected for him. He thought he ought to share with us, but Kate wouldn’t hear of it.

“It’s your first win,” she said. “You have to take it all or the goddess of good luck will scorn you forever.”

He looked a little skeptical but kept the money.

Then came the drawing for the Las Vegas trip. Two workers carefully stirred the tickets and a lady was asked to draw one. She read out the number slowly and it was Michael’s! He jumped up and held his ticket high with excitement.

“You’re supposed to yell Bingo!” I said, so he did so repeatedly.

From the Mailbox I want to thank everyone during the past twenty years or so who has taken the time to write to me at: bobonbingo@earthlink.net. I love hearing from all of you. And, as you know I use much of what you send me in my column. So, that is what I am doing this time around.

A former Marine named “Gunner” wrote to say: “Bob, I remember a long time ago you talked about the popularity of Bingo in other countries. Can you brush us up on that again?” Certainly, “Gunner.”

There are lots of reports on the Internet about Bingo. It is more popular in most of the world that many of us realize. For example, we have always known that in Britain it’s a big deal. I remember in one column talking about how during World War Two the Red Cross and other “morale” groups cheaply printed Bingo cards and passed them out with pencils so soldiers could play.

After the war, as many British cities rebuilt, some of the old movie theaters were converted to Bingo halls. In the 1950s and early ‘60s nearly every British neighborhood had a Bingo parlor.

Then, the game became so big the central government stepped in and started regulating it. Even today, it is estimated that in Scotland one out of every five persons plays Bingo. That’s 20 percent of the population.

In many parts of the world, on-line Bingo has become the rage. The months during which it wasn’t safe to congregate boosted the concept.

Japan is huge into this. Always a land of new technology, Japan has become a real international center for Bingo online.

Italy, the birthplace of the original “carnival” game BEANO–which evolved into Bingo–remains home to thousands of halls and gaming parlors. It is extremely strong in parts of rural Italy where Bingo is almost always a part of any street fair or neighborhood celebration.

In many countries of the world, such as the United Kingdom, where the concept of “drag queens” is a more accepted part of the culture than here in the United States, Bingo has struck up an interesting kind of marriage with “drag.” In many cities, the major Bingo event of the week is a raucous session of Bingo with the caller, a local personality in drag, yells out the numbers – sometimes with Don Rickles-style insults.

Bingo Brawling Dear Guy, At Bingo last night, two women players got into an argument about something. At first, they just were sitting and arguing in low voices.

Then their voices got louder and louder. One of them stood up and started jabbing her finger in the air as she shouted, then the other one did the same. Finally, one slapped the other then they grabbed each other’s hair and really began to wrestle. A couple of male volunteers ran over and grabbed hold of them and pulled the them apart. When they did, the two women turned on the men and began screaming at them.

The women were told to leave the Bingo hall, which they did together muttering and complaining the whole way! I was told later that the two women were, in fact, sisters,

MAY 2021 and that this was not the first time they’d gone at it like this. The whole thing was crazy, but it did make for an interesting night at Bingo!

Dear J.J., Ah, there’s nothing like a little family brawl to liven up an evening of Bingo! I think I’ve witnessed maybe six such public fights in my life, and interestingly, four of them were between women and two of those were at Bingo. It’s such a shock when a typically sedate place like a Bingo hall suddenly becomes the backdrop for a loud, sometimes violent, confrontation. It sure would be nice if these people kept their brawling in the streets and alleys where it belongs. —Guy

Your Crash Course in Blackjack The objective in blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand. You can do this in one of two ways: by either having your hand total higher than the dealer’s hand, or by not going over 21 when the dealer subsequently goes over 21 (going over 21 is known as “busting” or “breaking”). Therefore, if you have 18 and the dealer has 17, you win.

If you stand on 12 and the dealer busts, you win.

The cards count their face value in blackjack. Picture cards count as 10, and an Ace counts as either 1 or 11 (initially the Ace counts as 11 but if you draw more cards, and the hand totals more than 21, then the Ace can be counted as 1). The total of any hand is the sum of the card values in the hand.

When you win a hand at blackjack, you are paid even money (i.e., if you bet $5 and win, you are paid $5). The only exception is a player’s blackjack, which is paid either 3-2 or 6-5 (avoid the games that pay 6-5!) if the dealer doesn’t also have a blackjack. If your hand and the dealer’s hand have the same total, this is known as a push, or tie, and you neither win nor lose your wager. Card suits have no meaning in blackjack.

The dealer must act on his hand by house rules (i.e., he has no playing options). If his hand totals 16 or less, he must draw another card or cards. If his hand totals 17

MAY 2021 through 21, he must stand. In some casinos, the dealer must stand on soft 17, and in others, he must hit (it will say so on the layout). The odds are slightly better for players when the dealer stands on all 17s, including soft 17.

Player Options Hitting: When you want the dealer to give you another card, this is known as hitting. Hand signals are used in casinos to signify that you want a hit. In face-up games, make a beckoning motion with your finger, or tap your finger on the table to signify you want a hit.

In face down games, scratch the edge of the cards that are in your hand lightly on the felt.

Standing: When you are satisfied with the total of your hand, you should stand. You indicate that you want to stand in face-up games by waving your hand (palm down) over the cards. In facedown games, tuck the cards under the chips that you wagered on the hand.

Doubling Down: This playing option allows you to double your bet in return for receiving one additional card. You can only double down after you receive your initial two cards (i.e., once you draw a third card, the double down option is no longer available).

Pair Splitting: If you have two like cards, such as a pair of 6s, you can split the 6s and play two hands, each hand starting with a count of 6. In most casinos, you are also allowed to split again (called re-splitting) if the second card to one or both split hands results in another pair. Most casinos will also allow you to double down on one or both split hands if you wish to do so. Rules vary, but often you are permitted to split to a total of four hands. If you split Aces, most casinos will only give you one card to each Ace. Surrender: Some, but not all, casinos allow this option. Surrender allows a player to forfeit his hand, before playing it, with an automatic loss of half the original wager. If the dealer has an Ace upcard, you can surrender only after the dealer checks for a blackjack (if he has a blackjack you automatically lose).

shows an Ace upcard, players have the option to make an insurance wager equal to one-half of the amount bet on the hand. If the dealer has a 10-value card in the hole, the insurance bet pays 2-1.

Even Money: If you are dealt a blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace upcard, the dealer will ask you if you want even money.

Taking even money when you have a natural is identical to taking insurance, it’s just another way of saying the same thing. If you accept even money, the dealer will immediately pay you even money on your wager before they check

Now that you know how to play, it’s important that you learn how to win. For starters, you need to learn the basic playing strategy (or use a basic strategy card when you play). Playing blackjack for the first time is like learning how to ride a bicycle. It looks scary at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be off and running. I wish you good cards and much fun!

GET INTO VAN GOGH “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience,” a digitally immersive and virtual reality Van Gogh exhibit that has been traveling around the world made its first North American appearance in Las Vegas last month. The show takes place in the 7,000-square-foot Portal, Area15’s projection-surrounded room designed for exactly this kind of art presentation. According to the press release, “The timed experience, encompasses 35 minutes mapped specifically to fit the PORTAL, and allows visitors to feel as though they have stepped into the famous artist’s masterpieces.” The show runs through July 5, with GA tickets starting at $35 (discounts for military, seniors, locals, and children). VIP tickets, which include the VR experience, can be added for $10.

FAST FOOD HALL Resorts World has released details about its fast-food hall, which will be called Famous Foods Street Eats. Comprising sixteen stalls in a big 24,000-square-foot venue, most stalls will feature Eastern foods, with a few serving up Western. The centerpiece will be a 16-seat bar and the separate de rigueur speakeasy will be hard to find. The Eastern selections will include Chinese dumplings, Hainanese poached chicken, Peking duck burritos, Chinese clay pots and noodles, Filipino lechon (whole pig), Indian curry, Thai beef, Japanese yakitori and sushi, Taiwanese bubble tea, and Singapore sundries. The Western choices will be fried chicken, barbecue, and Italian. The center bar will offer a self-pour and automated beer system; the name of the hidden speakeasy is Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den.

BIRTHDAY WINS One lucky Colorado resident, Emma, hit big on her birthday at Arizona Charlie’s on S. Decatur Blvd., winning $50,343 on the 34th number, B13, while playing Charlie’s Double Progressive during the 7 p.m. session this past spring. And a California man, in Vegas to help a buddy celebrate his birthday, hit a jackpot for $892,574 at the Cosmopolitan on a National Lampoon’s Vacation progressive slot machine around the same time.

Denny’s flagship diner at Neonopolis downtown is offering a special: For $199, you can get two Original Grand Slam breakfasts (a $15.98 value), plus a wedding ceremony, silk bouquet and boutonniere (available in red, white, pink, or yellow), Champagne toast, Pancake Puppies wedding cake, and two wedding T-shirts. Denny’s wedding chapel opened in 2012, though it took several months for the first wedding to actually be performed there; it features a photo booth with Vegas-themed props and a full bar for toasting your vows after the service.

ROCKSTAR BAR Located at the Las Vegas Golf Center on Las Vegas Blvd. S. right across from Town Square, the newly openend Rockstar Bar has a classic-rock theme and vibe.

For opening weekend, a Journey tribute band and an ‘80s rock band played to a capacity crowd.

Rockstar also has numerous TV screens to watch the games, an outdoor patio that overlooks the golf, a sport-bars menu, and craft cocktails.

Cashballs and Hotballs Gardening in the nude is a lot cheaper than buying a scarecrow.

–John Wagner Robert and I were recently in Vegas. Did we play Bingo? Did Nancy break her long-time losing streak? Yes, to both, although my wins were small, I got to yell Bingo again after a dry spell that seemed to be never ending. As for Robert, well he won a Hotball/Cashball Bonus at the Plaza in downtown Vegas. We knew how the Hotball worked, but had no idea what the Cashball Bonus promotion entailed. After Robert yelled Bingo on the Hotball with another player, we expected to share the Hotball loot equally. However, when the gal came to pay him, he got several hundred more than we expected due to the Cashball Bonus promotion. According to the rules, the first ball out on the first game is the Hotball. After the Hotball is pulled, the next four numbers out are that session’s Cashball Bonus Balls. Winning on the Hotball number and catching any of the four Cashball Bonus Balls anywhere on your card, you can win: 4 out of 4 – $2,000; 3 out of 4 – $1,000; 2 out of 4 – $500; 1 out of 4 – $100. Whoop, whoop and a big thank you to Kimmy, Doreen, and Ty who run the Plaza Bingo and were super nice to old poops like us who sometimes need extra help figuring out new games or procedures.

Plaza Bingo is on the 3rd floor of the casino and has six daily sessions on the odd hours (11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, and 9pm). This Bingo is the only one in downtown Vegas and it has a special Coverall where a player can win $1,000,000 in forty-seven numbers or less. It could and does happen and it could happen to me, or you. Ah, the dream lives on and actually your chances are better than winning that amount in a state lottery; certainly, better than odds on Megabucks or Powerball.

We also played Bingo at Santa Fe Station. It has a separate smoking section; a big plus for nonsmokers.

Cocktails and delicious pastries are available for those of us who enjoy such guilty pleasures. The updated Bingo room has outlets for mobile devices, free Wi-Fi, and plush seating for achy creaky bones like ours. Their Bingo agents (Onicka, Vanessa, and Susie) were fantastic and made us newcomers feel super welcome.

That means a lot when you are attending an unfamiliar Bingo and need to figure out how to proceed even when you’re fairly Bingo savvy as we are.

I mentioned to the ladies behind the counter that I’m a columnist for Bingo Bugle and they thought it was hilarious when I jokingly threatened to give them a bad report if I didn’t win. Well, I didn’t win a thing, but these lively, funny ladies and Santa Fe Station Bingo still gets an A+ for effort. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.
