Muted Group Theory Script Setting In a small, southern town, 1960s era, a family is gathered around the kitchen table one evening preparing to have dinner. Characters Joe Smith – Age 32, factory worker, sole provider for his family, old-fashioned and set in his ways. Amy Smith – Age 30, Joe’s wife, homemaker, overwhelmed and exhausted, tired of the social norm in which the wife is to remain silent at all costs. Scenario Joe and Amy Smith have been married for five years and have two children ages 1 and 2. Joe was raised in an old-fashioned family in which the role of the man/father is to work; the role of the woman/mother is to take care of the home and children. In the past, Joe has returned from work angry because he claims he cannot see proof of Amy cleaning the home while he was away at work. Amy feels devalued because she works in the home, cleaning, cooking, and tending to the children from the time she wakes until the times she goes to bed at night. Amy has made numerous efforts to explain to Joe the many duties she performs each day, but Joes does not sympathize.
