ABOUT ME

REMEDi A SMART PILL DISPENSER Brief: “Design a product which is dedicated to a clearly defined context (eg. healthcare, sports) whilst abiding to the ideals of IOT (the Internet of Things). The aim of this Design Practice module was to focus on the consolidation of core industrial design capability that is central to creative professional practice. This assignment highlights my model-making, sketching and creative qualities as well as my keen attention to detail.

THE DEVICE IS AIDED BY AN APP, WHICH ALLOWS THE USER OR A PARENT TO MONITER A ‘PROGRESS REPORT’, ENSURING THAT THE MEDICATION IS BEING TAKEN

THIS DEVICE AIMS TO HELP YOUNG TEENAGERS TAKE THEIR MEDICATION, ENCORPORATING A SENSE OF ENJOYABILITY WHILST ENSURING THAT THE MEDICATION IS TAKEN 100% OF THE TIME

SKETCH MODEL

Blue foam Aesthetics

MAKING BLUE FOAM MODELS AS SKETCH MODELS IS QUICK, INEXPENSIVE AND ALLOWED ME TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT SHAPES

THE USE OF BLUE FOAM MODELS ALLOWS ME TO UNDERSTAND THE AESTHETICS OF THE PRODUCT FAR BETTER THAN A CAD MODEL

I WAS ABLE TO CONDUCT USER TESTING AND RECEIVE MORE CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK WITH A PHYSICAL PRESENCE

app, which can be found by willing volunteers also using the app.

David has a buisness idea but needs a designers skills to help him get the product on the market.

People offering their skills rather than funding can often be more valuable than money. Great businesses are often made from who you know, not what you know.

Through working together they are able to launch the business idea thanks to toms work and their communicating through the app

LOG IN Dave and Tom connect with each other via the app and start comunicating to arrange plans to work on the project together.

THIS STORY BOARD SHOWS A POSSIBLE SCENARIO AS TO HOW A POTENTIAL USER MAY INTERACT WITH THE APP AND BENEFIT FROM ITS EXISTANCE

An app focussed on appealing to two target audiences; someone who has an idea they wish to start-up using the expertise of others; the other who wishes to invest their skills to help them with specific areas. If a volunteer invests their skills, they will be rewarded with ‘O2 points’, which will be recognised by businesses as a potential employment reference. The start up company will not be required to put excessive funds into their idea by purchasing different areas of expertise. This app is all about allowing people to make connections that they can potentially re-pay with their skills, and getting involved with each other’s businesses.

SINCE THIS APP HAD THE POTENTIAL TO CONNECT YOUNG FOLK TO THOSE WHO HAD LESS UNDERSTANDING OF HOW APPS WORK, I HAD TO GAIN A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE USER GROUP WHICH I KNEW LESS ABOUT

I GENERATED A SET OF IDEAS THROUGH RAPID PAPER PROTOTYPING, USER TESTING, FEEDBACK AND DESIGN ITERATION UNTIL I HAD A SET OF SCREENS APPROPRIATE FOR THE APPS FUNCTIONALITY

THIS APP HAS A CLEAR LAYOUT AND A GLOBAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM (SO THAT THE USER STANDS LITTLE CHANCE OF GETTING ‘LOST’). BELOW ARE FOUR SCREENS SHOWING THE APP’S LAYOUT USERNAME AND PASSWORD PROMPTED UPON OPENING THE APP

USING THE ‘SMART SEARCH’ FEATURE ALLOWS ACCURATE CONNECTIONS TO BE MADE

GLOBAL NAVIGATION THROUGH THE APP IS ACHEIVED THROUGH A STANDARD ‘BURGER MENU’, AS WELL AS A SWIPE OPTION TO ENHANCE USABILITY. FROM HERE THE MENU ALLOWS THE USER TO EXPLORE CONNECTIONS, CREATE EVENTS AND EDIT THEIR PROFILE.

A QUIETER, CORDLESS HAIR DRYER Brief: “Re-design a hair dryer intended for high volume production using observational analysis of users and the outcomes of product disassembly.

This assignment highlights my ability to work well in a group as well as my CAD/rendering abilities.

HAIR DRYER - RE-DESIGN PROJECT

USER RESEARCH User Deconstruction Technology

MY RESEARCH INVOLVED DECONSTRUCTION OF A STANDARD HAIR DRYER ALLOWING ME TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE PRODUCT IS USED BY THE USER AND MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES.

FROM OUR RESEARCH, WE FOUND THAT THE ERGONOMICS WERE A KEY ISSUE. USERS ALSO FOUND THE HAIR DRYER TO BE TOO LOUD AND THE CORD WAS VERY RESTRICTIVE IN LENGTH

HAIR DRYER - RE-DESIGN PROJECT

EXPLODED DIAGRAM User Internals Function

THE DOCKING STATION CHARGES THE HAIRDRYER, REMOVING THE NECESSITY OF THE CORD WHICH USERS FOUND IRRITATING

THE AESTHETICS ARE SLICK, SMOOTH AND DESIRABLE TO THE TARGET MARKET, WHICH IS STRENGHTENED BY THE USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY

HAIR DRYER - REDESIGN PROJECT

FINAL RENDER

Product Outcome

OUR IDEA WAS TO DESIGN A REVOLUTIONARY HAIR DRYER, USING INNOVATIVE NEW WAYS OF CREATING AN EFFECTIVE STREAM OF HOT AIR. WE CHANGED THE SHAPE OF THE HAIR DRYER, ENCOURAGING THE USER TO HOLD IT IN A MORE COMFORTABLE POSITION AND REDUCING THE POTENTIAL FOR STRAIN INJURIES. BY APPLYING A 12V SUPERCAPACITOR WITH A DOCKING STATION, THE PRODUCT WILL RUN FOR THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF TIME WITHOUT A CORD.

AN ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHT ALARM DESIGN WEEK Brief: “Design a product that supports domestic PV systems” We were given 1 week to design a solution to the brief we were set and to present our design on two A3 sheets, including our research that lead us to design our final outcome. This assignment highlights my ability to design a thoughtful product within a limited timescale.

DESIGN WEEK GAVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE SET A BRIEF, CARRY OUT APPROPRIATE RESEARCH AND DELIVER A FINAL DESIGN WITHIN AN EXTREMELY RESTRICTED AMOUNT OF TIME. THIS PROVES MY ABILITY TO WORK HARD AND PRODUCE A QUALITY OUTCOME UNDER PRESSURE

RESEARCH

IT ALSO SHOWS MY CAPABILITY TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF A BRIEF WITHIN A FINITE AMOUNT OF TIME, ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT I DO NOT ALLOW WORK TO GET ON TOP OF ME - I PACE IT OUT WITH A STEADY-EYE ON THE CLOCK

Alarm clocks are considered ‘unnatural’ to humans, as we are encouraged to wake up according to our body clock. One reason why people feel tired throughout the day is not due to a lack of sleep, but because they were awoken from a ‘deep sleep’.

The times at which solar panels are most productive across the year is between the hours of 10am-2pm. For the average household, lighting makes up for 18% of the electricity bill.

In general, lightbulbs vary in amount of energy they use. Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs use 70-80% less energy than equivilent traditional bulbs, and can save £50 of electricity bills over their lifetime. They also have the capability to be dimmed variably.
