“We solve our customer’s problems by working with them until we find a solution,” noted owner Skip King. ACE carries several major brands of high-quality paint including Benjamin Moore, Valspar, Clark & Kensington and their own ACE brand, plus all the sundries related to any painting project. Plus, they have unbelievable experience. “Penny (Anderson), the “Paint Lady” is very good at her job,” noted Heights owner Bob Hanson. “She’s extremely adept with colormatching for helping our customers solve their paint issues.” Anderson, who has more than 25 years of experience in the paint industry, knows both the product and ACE customers well. “You have to be instinctive and build a relationship, while imparting years of knowledge and give the customer what they are asking for,” she said. “For example, when it comes to color-matching, our paint will not just be good, it will be perfect.” Other long-time, customer oriented employees, one of them since 1983, add to the entire friendly feel at ACE. “Our clients tell us they come here for the customer service,” Anderson said. “I love my job and we are the experts here; if customers need questions answered, they will get that at ACE.”
Pet Groomer Groomingdale’s Salon & Paw-tique 1436 Central Ave. Humans have Bloomingdale’s. In Billings, dogs and cats have Groomingdale’s Salon & Paw-tique. It is, likely, a fair trade. Owner Stacey Hess is the only groomer in Billings who is certified by the National Dog Groomers Association of America; in fact, she is one of only three in the entire state. “At Groomingdale’s we are pet stylists—we tailor the service to both the pet’s looks and also to his or her health issues like nails and skin,” Hess said. For example, schnauzers’ hair continues to grow, even past a certain length, like humans’ hair. If it is not cut, the dog will have problems like matting and dander, even in winter. “I am passionate about pets, and to me, grooming is an art form,” Hess said. “It’s more than just a haircut, it’s a way to make them look their best, and that’s why continuing education is so important as is building a trusting relationship with our clients.” In business since 2011, Hess has recently added cat grooming and on-site pet day care. She noted that cats are cared for away from dogs (unless specified) and both the indoor and outdoor spaces are designed with the
dogs’ comfort in mind, including either orthomats or synthetic grass.

Melissa Leiseth, owner for nearly 22 years, considers Exotic Pets to be a great place for an afternoon outing. “Even if you don’t have a pet, stop in anyway,” she said. “This is such a fun place to visit.” Leiseth estimates that at any given time, visitors could see about 100 different animals, from kittens and puppies to less common hedgehogs, sugar gliders, large lizards and everything in-between. Exotic Pets also carries pet accessories and food,including a live variety of crickets, mice and roaches. In addition, they offer dog grooming. “Our groomers have been here 22-plus years,” Leiseth noted. “Our staff is experienced, enthusiastic and caring and those qualities make us stand out from our competition.” Knowledgeable, friendly service such as this has earned Exotic Pets the Readers’ Choice Award for the past six years. Exotic Pets is also known for its annual hamster races. Leiseth looks forward to the event every May. “We’ve had as many as 48 hamsters and the
Dave Biegel may be one heck of a plumber and an excellent business person, but he insists he is just one player on the team at Precision Plumbing & Heating. “It’s my employees who won this award; they fulfill the mission. We just give them the tools they need so they can be the best,” said Biegel, who has owned Precision for 22 years with his wife, Teri. With 38 years in the plumbing trade, the Biegels have 80 employees in their Billings, Bozeman and Williston, N.D., locations. He said winning the award this year was a “pleasant surprise.” “Our people work really hard,” he said, noting that his crews have spent a lot of time on large commercial projects, but still enjoy doing residential installations and smaller household repairs. “Finding quality people is always a challenge. The average age of a plumber is over 50, so I want to encourage young people to come look at being a plumb if they are not going to go to college,” Biegel said.
