Celebrate Dad Month

elebrate Father’s Day on June 17 by taking your dad, son or daughter golfing. In fact, do it all summer, not just in June. When you do, stay in the moment and enjoy your day on the course. Some of my best golf memories are playing golf with my dad (rest in peace) and his usual group. They were competitive, but they all knew how to have fun on the golf course. I miss that time with Dad and his golf friends. June already, wow, did we have spring? During April I played on a few of those marginal 55-degree golf days. You know the type, overcast and very windy, requiring layers of clothes and a spare hand on the hat. It seemed I never warmed enough to shed a layer and free up the swing. We normally play the blue tees, but on one of those colder days, one of our group said, “This 30-mile-per-hour wind is brutal, let’s just have fun and move up to the white tee.” I’m wearing layers of clothes, winter gloves on both hands and my hat’s chinstrap cinched down tight, so when someone said, “Let’s move up and have fun” — I’m in! Up-wind holes played 50-75 yards longer at times — I hit a 3-wood 150 yards once, and barely reached the green. Don’t laugh; I normally hit a 3-wood 225 yards — that’s how windy it was. Downwind holes (there weren’t many) were fun, and we could let-it-rip, but still, even then, we had to be careful not to leave ourselves with the hardest shot in golf — a 60-yard wedge. Driver was not always the best option off the tee. Instead on these holes, course management was a smarter game, so I choose a club off the tee that would position me at a yardage that gave me a favorite iron for approach shots to the green. What we discovered that day was, it really doesn’t matter what tees we played — we still had to hit good golf shots. Sure, the driver remained in the bag more often, but again, we had to hit good shots from tee to green to hole in order to score well. Golf should be fun, and that day, we had fun — playing the up tees. I think, too many believe golf is about smashing 300-yard drives (as seen on TV), and yes, that certainly feels great, but how good are you from 100 yards to the hole. Even when we hit booming drives landing in the middle of the fairway, 90% of our strokes happen from 150 yards to the hole. Now, it’s June, and with warmer temperatures, the ball should fly farther, so I’ll be playing the blues again with my low-handicap opponents. But, if it’s an extremely windy June day, and someone says, “Let’s move up and have fun” — I’m in! Toss the Long Iron — Hybrids Are In!

few years ago, golfers complained to me that they were having trouble hitting long-irons. We introduced many golfers to hybrids to replace their 3- and 4-irons. Since the hybrid clubs worked so well and were accepted, golfers are now turning to them as a replacement for mid-irons, as well. Hybrid golf clubs are a cross between a fairway wood and an iron. While hybrids have a similar shape to a wood and carry the advantage of being easier to hit, they are lofted-like irons, and therefore, will deliver distances closer to irons than woods. When choosing a hybrid to replace an iron, you need to give it some thought and hit it before you buy it. Distance is a factor, since a number 4 hybrid will go further than a number 4 iron. Your golf course professional can be a great help in finding the correct replacement.

Ping, Mizuno, Cobra and Titleist also have excellent offerings in the hybrid category. They capitalize on new technology that makes it easier to replace the harder to hit irons. Tour Edge Golf is another option, it’s not as well-known as some brands, but Tour Edge has been awarded top honors for years in the hybrid category by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine “Best Equipment” awards. Tour Edge hybrids range from the Hot Launch 2 to the high-end Exotics line. The Exotics CBX Hybrid is a club that you need to hit! It comes in lofts from 16-degree to 22-degree. It is geared toward the low-to-mid handicapper. It features a lightweight titanium face, variable face thickness, and heavy hyper-steel body for enhanced distance. Its “Speed Ramp” sole delivers easier turf interaction and stability at impact. Along with the explosive distance in the Exotics CBX hybrid, the sole design may be the best feature. The Speed Ramp sole minimizes turf interaction for maximum speed and stability at impact. This is a feature that my golfers have found very valuable. The Exotics CBX hybrid has proven to be one of the easiest hybrids to get airborne off a lie with very little grass under the ball.

All of the manufacturers offer hybrids or rescues, so it should be easy to find the best club to help your game. Let’s look at some of the options. Callaway has taken their popular Jailbreak Technology to their line of Rogue hybrids. Jailbreak Technology offers more distance through faster ball speeds. Two steel bars behind the face stiffen the body, placing a higher impact load on the face for faster ball speed and extraordinary distance. One of Callaway’s most innovative technologies, the Face Cup generates more speed on both center and off-center hits. This is what we are finding from all of the manufacturers, as they are offering more and more lofts to find that perfect club to replace the difficult to hit long-irons. TaylorMade offers the M3 and M4 rescues. The M3 rescues offer adjustability with a 30-gram weight, the heaviest included in a rescue that can be adjusted into positions between the heel and toe of the club to personalize performance. The club’s 3-degree adjustable loft sleeve allows you to change loft and lie settings to dial in your preferred performance. The M3 is offered in #2, #3, #4 and #5 rescues. Youthful Enthusiasm at Historic Dub’s Dread

23-year-old Alec Otting goes from cart boy to general manager.

rom cart boy to general manager of one of Kansas City’s most historical golf courses in 6 ½ years. That’s the mercurial climb in the golf industry by 23-year-old Alec Otting at Dub’s Dread Golf Course in western Wyandotte County, KS.

in 2013, Otting played one season and then fast-forwarded his career in golf by serving as an assistant coach to head coach Gary Shrader. “That was a blast,” said Otting. “I was coaching guys my own age, so I’m not sure how much they listened, but we had a good team, finishing 5th in the national tournament.”

“Alec really gets it; he’s light years ahead of his age,” says Jimmy Angelotti, Otting’s predecessor at Dub’s Dread who now oversees Dub’s and the TPC course in Dallas as part of his new role as asset manager for VanTrust Real Estate. “Age doesn’t matter if you have the talent. He understands services, leadership by example, how to treat people, how to gain the respect of members and employees — all the little things that not everyone does at his age. He has that knack.”

“Alec was pretty special. A great guy who could not be more accommodating,” said Shrader. “A good assistant knows what needs to be done. They don’t have to be

told and that’s the kind of kid he was. I’ve always said to be successful in business, you needed to figure out a way to say yes, to figure out a way so that people are going to walk away happy and that was Alec.” Following his graduation from KCKCC, Otting was headed for the University of Kansas — until he was offered the job of assistant general manager at Dubs Dread in June 2015. He was elevated to general manager last November when Angelotti moved up the corporate ladder. “I learned

I wanted to get a college scholarship and I knew golf would help in the business world.” That summer (2011), he was out on the putting green when Angelotti approached him. “He said he needed some help on the cart staff and hired me on the spot,” remembers Otting. Today, Dub’s is played at a more player friendly 7,155 yards from the tips — except when it’s stretched to 7,888 yards for the annual “Monster Mash” that gains widespread attention throughout the Midwest each fall. “We usually announce it in June and it fills up immediately,” says Otting. “Teams come from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma. Last year, we had a waiting list of 20 teams.”

Dub’s status in Kansas City golf lore is iconic. In 1967, Golf Digest in a cover story proclaimed Dub’s as the longest and toughest golf course in the U.S. at 8,101 yards. It’s neat that it was built to be a golf course and not for housing. And it’s great to tell people about the history. Golfers come in and see pictures and are amazed when we tell them the history.”

Thanks to Scott Cummins, the golf superintendent since 2007 and on the maintenance staff since 1999, the course is in excellent condition. “Scott is as good as they get, one of the most knowledgeable,” says Otting. “His focus has been on the greens and that’s something that’s been the talk of Dub’s year-in and year-out. What’s neat is to look at the old photos we have displayed and see 8 to 10 feet trees that now tower along the fairways.”

Because of Angelotti’s belief in catering to his customers, Dub’s Dread became the first course (during early 2016) within the KC area to offer golf carts with USB outlets and Bluetooth speakers. Golfers playing Dub’s become eligible for drawings for a dozen Titleist ProV golf balls each week; a Titleist driver or Scotty Cameron putter each month; and free golf for a year.  Located at 12601 Hollingsworth Road, about two miles east of K-7, green fees top out at $40 with cart Monday through Friday and $54 weekends. he celebrated late columnist for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Doug Larson, once quipped, “If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles.” While fishing may not be the sport of choice for everyone, for a few Midwest Section PGA members, it wouldn’t be unusual to find a fishing rod (or two) tucked away among their golf gear. A teaching professional at Shadow Glen Golf Course in Olathe, KS, Mike Boring had his interest in fishing ignited when he was just a kid. “My dad, grandpa and uncle would take me out to fish,” he recalled. Unlike the big one that got away, Boring was hooked! A true sportsman at heart, Boring is mainly a catch and release fisherman, but he has thought of putting a fish over five pounds on his wall. However, he never had the heart to do so. Instead, he prefers to snap a photo of his catches before releasing them back into their natural habitat. “I have never taken a big fish out of the lake,” he emphasized. Boring likened fishing to golf with a few simple analogies. “Learning how to cast is like learning how to swing a club and hit a ball,” he indicated. “Just like swinging a club, the more you practice with casting, the percentage of catching a fish goes up.” Boring also noted that, much like a day on the golf course, one has to contend with incredibly sunny and/or windy days, which can make a significant difference in the overall success in what you catch and the stories you can conjure up to brag about it. “When my golf game is bad, my fishing seems much better,” says Boring. When Shawn Freeman, Head Golf Professional at Bill & Payne Stewart Golf Course in Springfield, MO, is not on the greens, he is probably out near the water. This award-winning professional fisherman likes to grab his tackle box and head out to the nearest body of water to catch some bass. 16

“Fishing is a lot like golf — in that it is an addiction,” Freeman says. Always driven by competition, whether with a club or a rod and reel in his hand, Freeman participates in numerous bass fishing tournaments. He recently competed in the Costa Series, a Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) event in which 200+ boats participated. Even though he didn’t score a trophy this time, he still had fun, and that truly is what this sport is all about. “I will continue to go fishing for as long as my wife continues to allow me to do it,” he quipped. As for casting a line into a golf course pond, Freeman admitted to being wooed by temptation on occasion, but prefers to find other places to fish. “Golf balls have a tendency to look for water,” he laughed, although, when pushed, he did admit that there are some golf courses on which he has played that have some pretty tempting points on the lake to cast a bait. The greatest thrill for this ambitious fisherman, however, does come with the catch, and the largest bass he ever caught was nearly 11 pounds — a feat accomplished while he was in college in Florida. “I also once caught a nine-pound bass at Table Rock,” Freeman said. Steve Gotsche, Head Golf Professional at Colbert Hills in Manhattan, KS, has a history of traveling to Texas to fish with a buddy of his. “I used to work at College Station and met a lot of ranchers down there,” said Gotsche. “One of the members of the course down there lets us stay on his ranch. He even goes so far as to mow around the ponds before we get there.” Gotsche and his friend began a four-day tournament years ago in which they are the sole competitors, complete with a traveling trophy. “We would fish for four days, sun-up to sun-down,” stated Gotsche. “We also do a lot of kayaking and wading during those four days!”

As holder of the coveted trophy now, Gotsche proudly displays it at home, even though he claims his wife hates it. “It’s a mounted bass my wife actually got at a garage sale years ago, and it became our trophy back in 2008,” said Gotsche, who confessed that his affinity for fishing gear has made him a fan favorite of the Bass Pro Shop. “They love me there!” Matt Murdoch, Teaching Professional at Mission Hills Country Club, developed a love of fishing when he was barely out of preschool. Growing up in New Mexico, he mainly engaged in trout fishing, but around the Midwest, his primary focus is on bass. Murdoch also prefers to catch and release, and his true joy comes from finding those hidden gems to fish. “I enjoy going to privately-owned farms that have some great ponds (honey holes) to fish,” he says. Just as in the game of golf, Murdoch emphasized patience is key when fishing. “If one thing doesn’t work, then you try another approach,” he said. Even when the bite isn’t on, Murdoch enjoys the peace and tranquility associated with fishing and is a true fisherman on the go. “I have fun even if I don’t catch one. I always have two poles and a backpack full of gear at the ready. I also have a small boat that I can just throw in the back of my truck,” said Murdoch. Some folks might see fishing as an escape from the stress of life while in search of the “Big One,” but in the case of these four golf professionals, it seems to reflect a deeper understanding of their beloved second sport. 

Struggling With Your Short Game?

Choosing the Correct Shot and Club is Key…

hen teaching a short game lesson, I begin the lesson by dropping a ball around the green and asking the student to execute a common short game shot as they would see several times during a typical round. Most of the time, the student fails to choose the correct type of shot or club. My goal with all of my students is for them to understand that the key to saving strokes around the green is to choose the correct type of shot and the correct club to match the kind of shot they are trying to execute. The following are explanations of the two common short game shots and the keys to executing such shots well. The two common shots around a green are pitches and chips. To simplify the difference, estimate the distance between you and the hole and divide that distance into thirds. • •

A chip will be in the air for an average of 1/3 of the distance and roll the additional 2/3 of that distance. A pitch is just the opposite. The ball will be in the air for an average of 2/3 of the distance and role the additional 1/3 of that distance.

It is important to note that the speed of the greens and if the shot is uphill or downhill will vary those averages. When deciding which shot to execute, look at how much green you have between you and the flag stick. Photo 1

In photo 1, you can see that I have a lot of green between me and the flag. The shot I should choose here is a chip. Remember, you have more control of a ball that is rolling than in the air. When faced with a similar shot, I see too many golfers use their highest lofted wedge and try to fly the ball to the hole or shut the clubface down and attempt a chip. More times than not, you will come up short of your intended target because of the added loft, or you’ll hit the shot fat because of closing the clubface down exposes too much of the leading edge. In the next picture (photo 2), I am faced with a shot that has less green to work with. The shot I should chose here is a pitch. If I were to attempt to chip, the ball would get eaten up by the rough and come up way short of my intended target. Now that you know which shot to choose — execution is the final step.

The Chip Shot: Common clubs used for the chip shot: GW, PW, 9, 8, & 7. Setup is key for this shot and the pitch. Notice (photo 3) how my setup is open, I am standing closer to the ball and the ball position is behind center. Also take notice that my hands are ahead of the ball. Before attempting the shot, I want you to pick a spot where you want the ball to land and focus only on that spot. To execute this shot, I want you to rock your shoulders back-and-forth, like you would a putt, and do not break your wrists. The clubhead will also stay low to the ground going back and after impact as well. The ball should come out low and will roll most of the way to your intended target. The most common mistake with a chip shot is for you to break down your wrists. The will cause your club to bottom out behind the ball and cause either a fat or thin shot. The Pitch Shot: Common clubs used for this shot: LW & SW. Setup is similar to the chip. Notice (photo 4) how my setup is open (photo 4), but my ball position is more in the middle of my stance, and my hand position is more in line with my belt buckle. I want to use the loft of the club for this shot, and if your hands are too far ahead, it will cause you to deloft the club. Again, for this shot, I want you to focus only the spot where you want the ball to land. During the backswing your hands will stay close to your body and your right elbow will move slightly behind your right hip. At impact, it is important that your body rotates through the shot. This will ensure the clubface doesn’t shut-down. Photo 4

With some practice, you’ll feel more confident with these short game techniques and landing the ball in the correct spot to achieve the 1/3 or 2/3 of distance and roll. Ultimately, shaving some strokes. 

hite sandy beaches are great if you’re near the ocean or along the Gulf of Mexico, but not so much when you’re on the golf course. Unless you’re at Adams Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs, MO! Pristine white sand now fills the bunkers — part of the most extensive course renovation since the course opened 20 years ago on May 1, 1998. “It was time to address the bunkers,” said Shane Gardner, PGA pro and partner in Leawood, KS based Orion Management Solutions, the company managing the City of Blue Springs-owned par-72 layout. “While they were playable, they were inconsistent.”

Work began almost immediately after Blue Springs voters approved a sales tax in 2017 for city park improvements. Thanks to feedback from Blue Springs golfers and golfers throughout the area, redoing the bunkers at Adams Pointe was at the top of the list. When the renovation is complete, more than 750 tons of sand will fill Adams Pointe’s 30 bunkers. Gardner said the new-look white sand has really added some “pop” to the course. “People have really taken notice,” he said. “There is nothing more pleasing to the eye than to see beautifully maintained green Bentgrass fairways offset by pure white sand.

“It makes most people think of very high-end facilities because premium sand is expensive.” Adams Pointe’s new grains come from Arkansas, and Gardner called it some of the best sand in the country. Most premium sand comes from either Arkansas or Ohio, not from a Missouri River basin, so getting it to Blue Springs was a costly proposition too. “What people don’t realize is, the cost of hauling the sand is almost as much as the sand itself,” he said. But what the white sand costs in dollars and cents pales in comparison to the dividends it provides. “Most golfers will tell you poor bunker conditions are really detrimental

to a great golf experience,” Gardner explained. “There is nothing worse than playing a good round of golf only to hit it in a bunker that hasn’t been properly maintained.” Part of the redo included adding bunkers on the 2nd and 4th holes and repositioning others throughout the course. Bunkers that either didn’t come into play or caused drainage or traffic issues — like the bunker surrounding the back of the 18th green that was permanently removed. “The bunker behind 18 green, while providing a nice visual, didn’t really come into play as much as you would think,” Gardner said. “The bunkers in front of 18 green were redesigned to provide a slightly more difficult shot, and the water near the back of the green still creates a challenge for those who accidentally hit it past the flagstick.”

(photo 4/27/18 by Bill Cromwell) It should come as no surprise, the reaction to the new bunkers has been, in Gardner’s words, “overwhelmingly positive,” and more improvements are on the way. Thanks to money from the city’s parks improvement sales tax funds, cart path improvements are in the works too. Combined, the two projects (bunkers and cart paths) total close to $2 million —

the city and the city’s voters for having the vision and foresight to keep the course in the Kansas City golfing forefront. “Blue Springs is proud of its golf course, and the renovations just add to the positive comments visitors make about the city,” he said. “Players love the new bunkers and upgrades. “It shows them, the money they’re paying is being reinvested into the course.” If you’ve not played Adams Pointe in recent days, you should! With the new white sand bunkers and Bentgrass fairways — it feels like resort golf. 

(photo by Bill Cromwell) If you do find one of Adams Pointe’s 30 bunkers, (“Certainly not a lot in comparison to some other courses, but they are strategically placed,” Gardner said.) the difference in sand is immediately noticeable. It is more “powdery” than “gravelly” and the club travels smoothly through it. The practice area at the course features the new sand too, so Gardner suggests ending your range/practice session by hitting 10-15 balls out of the beach. “More than anything, good bunker play comes from practice,” he said. “If you hit those practice bunker shots, you’ll see the next time you’re on the course and in a bunker, you’ll be significantly more comfortable and confident.”

Gardner thinks these improvements will only bring more golfers to Blue Springs. He thanked

All of the bunkers at Adams Pointe were rebuilt by Mid-America Golf and Landscape using the new Billy Bunker method. The method replaces the old-style liner with a manufactured binder to hold a gravel blanket under the sand in place, altogether eliminating the need for liners. Golfers notice old soft cotton-like liners are often snagged by rakes and golf clubs, becoming exposed on edges and viewed aesthetically as unpleasing. The Billy Bunker binder (a resin-like gravel topping) allows water to pass through the sand and gravel at more than 1,500+ inches per hour with no ponding or side-wall washout after heavy rains. The method retains excellent playing bunkers and maintenance time/ cost is drastically reduced. Simply, the best playable sand bunkers possible.

Keys to Reading the Greens by Courtney Mahon, LPGA

hroughout an 18-hole round of golf, you will encounter at least 18 putts (if you only encounter 18 putts on a regular basis, stop reading now). Many of these putts will be not be perfectly straight and will require you to go through your well-rehearsed green-reading protocol. Make more putts with these slope-detecting, green-reading tips. Feet or Eyes? Throughout the history of golf, the majority of people read putts with their eyes. They stand behind the putt and look to see which way they think the ball will break. If you are a golfer who reads putts by looking, have you ever thought of using your feet? The majority of tour players will read greens by feeling what’s under their feet as their primary method of green reading. Why have tour players converted to reading their putts with feet instead of eyes? It’s not that players have eliminated using the eyes, but learning how to feel how much slope is under your feet can give you a more accurate aim point.

We typically use a driver 12 times — compared to an average of 34 (or more) putter stokes. For what it’s worth, the average golfer hits fairways 48.5 percent of the time, with the most misses landing to the right, 28.5 percent of the time.

Building Feet Awareness The first step to learning how to use your feet in green reading is to build awareness of what your feet feel. With every step you take, pay attention to what your feet are feeling. Which foot is higher or lower? Are you walking uphill or downhill? Does the ground slope to the right or to the left? The Next Step Your next step will be to start learning how much slope you feel and how to apply the amount of slope to the putt you are facing. Taking reads (or feeling the slope under your feet) should happen at the ball and in the last third of the putt. The ball will be rolling slower in the last third, so give more emphasis on this area when 28

According to Game Golf, including putts from the fringe, we use the putter 41.3 percent of the time. Perhaps we should be devoting our practice time to the short-game area and putting green, and not so much time spent on the driver and irons.

I’m guessing many golfers, like me, get so wrapped up in executing the next golf shot that remembering to drink water or liquids other that liquor to stay hydrated becomes secondary. Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with leg cramps? Talk about painful — double ouch! I have, and without fail, every time, I whine to my wife, “I didn’t drink enough water yesterday and was up all night with leg cramps.”

Every day you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. Think about it, we’re out in the sun/heat golfing for four hours or more. For your body (and muscles) to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. I wanted to know how much water I actually need to drink to avoid those nagging muscle cramps, so I did some research and found that The Institute of Medicine recommends the following amounts of liquid daily. The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly about 13 cups (3 liters) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of total beverages a day. 30

he chip and run shot is one of the easiest, but one of the most underutilized shots in an amateur’s golf game. Everyone likes to try the flop shots like Phil and company, but it takes hours upon hours of practice to execute shots like that time after time, and most amateurs do not have that practice time. Chip and run shot shots can be played with many different clubs, anything from a 5-iron to a pitching wedge. The objective of this shot is to have the least amount of airtime possible. The longer the ball is on the ground, the better chance we have to get it close. Many amateurs have very similar putting strokes, so that’s a good starting point. The only difference between the chip and run shot and a putt is that you will play the ball towards the toe of the club and hold your hands high so the heal of the club is off the ground. The reason for playing the ball off the toe is it creates less spin and more roll on the golf ball.

When making the stroke, just like a putt, there is no wrist hinge — no extra motion in the swing. If you have 20 feet to your target, swing the club as if it were a 20-foot putt. Remember, we are only trying to get the ball on the green and rolling. The less green you have to work with to the pin, you use a higher lofted club. The more green you have to work with, then use a club with less loft.

olf is a game that not only challenges your physical skill but also your ability to stay calm and focused. It turns out, it’s also a great way to boost your brain power. No matter what your handicap, golf can provide a fun, social way to stimulate your brain, increase your self-esteem and sharpen your concentration. Here’s how. 1) Increased Blood Flow to The Brain Whenever your body is in motion, your brain benefits by the increased blood flow. Next time you hit the course, walk a few holes rather than driving them. The extra steps can go a long way towards stimulating your brain fitness and increasing your energy. 2) Visualization You don’t have to be Tiger Woods to benefit from some simple visualization techniques. By imagining your swing, putt or overall form, you’re exercising your right brain, which is responsible for creativity. Plus, visualization can have a positive effect on the end results of your game. Few have better visualization skills than Jason Day.

you’re giving your eyes a visual workout and stimulating the tracking functions in your brain. Lose sight of the ball after your swing? No worries, you’ll still get a workout as you look for it in the grass. 5) Positive Affirmations Many golfers give themselves positive reinforcement during the round. Whether you say it to yourself (“I will make this putt”) or out loud as a bet amongst your friends, positive affirmations can lead to increased confidence and self-esteem. 6) Coordination Golf is often referred to as a game that requires excellent coordination. Whether it’s hand-eye, repeated precision strokes, or balance as you complete your swing, all of these practices exercise your cerebellum — one of the areas of your brain responsible for coordination. 7) Sharpen Your Focus By concentrating on the ball and imagining your swing, you are training your brain to focus. The golf course tends to be a fairly quiet place, but you still have to block out some surrounding noise and movement. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to control your attention and thought processing. 8) Strategy No matter where you hit the ball, you are going to have to strategize to get the ball into the hole. This not only requires the use of geometry, but also analysis of environmental conditions and strength. This problem-solving practice is a great left-brain workout.

9) Self Esteem boost A 2003 study showed that the brains of people with a low sense of worth were more likely to shrink than those with high self-esteem. Poor results on memory and learning tests were a result of the shrinkage. Finishing a tough round of golf gives you a sense of completion and a nice boost to your esteem – no matter how you scored (ok, sometimes it’s tied to the score). No matter how serious or fun your conversations are on the course, a 2008 study showed that simply socializing with others increased cognitive function. Whether your next round is intended to seal a business deal or relax over the weekend, make sure to chat it up — just not during your buddy’s hole-winning putt. 4) Vision Work Out When you golf, you not only have to focus on the ball while it’s at your feet, but also as it flies over the green. Remediating Hydraulic Spills on Golf Courses by Michael Gardner

he Awesome advancements with new golf technology doesn’t stop with drivers. Byron Nelson was once asked what he thought the greatest technological breakthrough was in golf. Nelson’s unexpected, yet genius response, “The lawn mower.” The mower has taken golf to a new level — it benefits all players with no regard to their equipment. If you were to glimpse into the maintenance shed of your local golf course, the first thing to catch your eye would be the high-tech mowers: riding greens mowers, triplex mowers, push-behind greens mowers, fairway mowers, and mowers for the rough. Unfortunately, advancements in technology come with a price. The hydraulics that power these high-tech mowers can damage the turf. As hard as our superintendents and mechanics work to keep equipment running smoothly, leaks will occur. We’ve all seen the effects of hydraulic leaks on the course — that tell-tale brownish yellow streak across the green. It’s impossible to predict when a leak might occur. Because greens are mowed during the dark of early morning, it’s difficult to see a leak while it’s occurring. Fluid is left behind the mower in a split second, undetected by the operator who is facing forward and mowing quickly across the greens. How can we minimize the damage and speed recovery? Firstly, the extreme temperature at which hydraulic fluid is used kills turf on contact. Secondly, hydraulic fluid is toxic to both the roots and the soil, disrupting photosynthesis and respiration, literally smothering the life out of the soil. By taking oxygen out of the soil, it kills the microorganisms in the soil. 38

So, what about biodegradable crop-based hydraulic fluids? Because turf is killed on contact by the high temperature of the spill, whether the hydraulic fluid is crop-based or petroleum-based, the initial damage is the same. However, turf damaged by crop-based hydraulic spills does recover faster than turf damaged by petroleum-based hydraulic spills, reducing the down time.

A combination of Huma Gro Turf’s Surf-Max®, Kleenup™ and Breakout®, along with Turfplex® VII, dilutes the contaminants and begins the repair process. Surf-Max® is a surfactant designed to improve both penetration and lateral movement of water within the root zone and to increase soil moisture retention. Kleenup™ is a soil remediation product. Hydraulics spills on a green can be very annoying to golfers, but superintendents really hate them. Now, there’s a solution. I’ve worked on spills 30 feet long and four feet wide. OVERLAND PARK, KS — St. Andrews Golf Club, since the late 90’s, has stripped in Zoysia fairways, modernized the driving range, installed state-of-the-art irrigation, rebuilt all greens and constructed six new holes. During 2012, Hodge Park and Shoal Creek Golf Course’s Superintendent Duane Sander, who is also a past GCSAA Heartland Section Superintendent of the Year, stripped Zoysia to replace the existing Bluegrass fairways. Today, the (grass) seeds of his labor are paying huge dividends. Today, the Zoysia has spread to 100 percent of the carpet-like fairways — Sander’s, one of the best in the business, knows how to grow grass. Hodge Park is also home to one of the favorite holes in the city — the par-4 15th. Playing just 310 yards downhill (you need to stand on a platform adjacent to the tee box to make sure it’s safe to hit), the fairway is split by water. Long hitters can clear it. Average players like me, need to lay-up, unless the hole’s playing down wind — then go for it. It’s only a golf ball! Your approach is equally challenging. The fairway narrows the closer you get to the green, and it’s guarded by trees right and left. If you’re lucky enough to reach the green, the fun is just beginning — especially if the pin is in the front of the back-to-front sloping putting surface. Love that hole! Synonymous to its county landscape, there are virtually no trees to block wind — a breeze here can feel like a 25-mile-per-hour wind. While owner Jeff McKee and his grounds crew have planted hundreds of trees, they still have maturing ahead to block the wind. The Rock course, a par 71, offers 6,721 yards of Bluegrass fairways and many challenges including long par-3s and enough water to test your nerves. The Hoot’s Hollow Course is a links-style layout similar to The Rock. Different at Hoot’s Hollow are Zoysia fairways with an abundance of ponds and creeks to challenge your skills. This course plays to a par 72 and at 7,012 yards, it’s the longest of the two courses. Hole 17 has an island green to test your nerves. You’ll also play the largest double-green in Kansas City. Kansas City Girls’ and Women’s Match Play Champions Crowned

fter much anticipation and a very long winter, The Kansas City Golf Association’s (KCGA) tournament season is finally in full swing with The Kansas City Girls’ and Women’s Match Play kicking-off a busy next few months for the KCGA players and staff. The Kansas City Girls’ and Women’s Match Play, a multi-day tournament took place at Swope Memorial Golf Course on May 4-6. The tournament opened on Friday with stoke play qualifying for both the girls’ and women’s division. The women competed in an 18-hole stroke play qualifying round and the girls a 9-hole stroke play round to determine seeding for match play rounds. For the women, the field was narrowed to four players after qualifying with their semi-final matches beginning Saturday morning. All 16 girls were seeded after their stroke play round and eight total matches began for the girls’ division on Saturday.

The Women’s Match Play Championship semi-final matches consisted of Carmen Titus facing off against defending champion Lacy Shelton. After a fairly even match throughout the day, Titus and Shelton halved the 18th hole sending the players back to hole one to battle it out on the 19th hole. Shelton, who hit her approach shot over the green, was unable to save par, setting up a 2-putt victory for Titus to claim the win and title of the 2018 Women’s Match Play Championship.

Girls’ Match Play Championship The Girls’ Match Play Championship featured Julia Misemer, the defending champion, playing Rosie Klausner for the 2018 title. Misemer’s qualifying round put her in the driver’s seat as the one seed while Klausner saw herself as the 6th seed. Both girls worked their way through a tough field and met after each won three matches in a row. Misemer bested Klausner with a 3 and 2 win Sunday afternoon at Swope Memorial. For the second consecutive year, Julia Misemer claimed the 2018 Girls’ Match Play Championship title. “Everybody who played did really well, so it feels good to know that it was a hard competition,” Misemer said after her victory. This year’s Girls’/Women’s Match Play Championship brought many great moments for both divisions and supplied a weekend of great golf to start the season. 40

Junior Golf Preview Summer not only means the beginning of KCGA regional championships, but also marks the beginning of the Kansas City Junior Tour (KCJT). Juniors will have the opportunity to play some popular courses this summer, including St. Andrew’s, Blue Springs, Minor Park, Swope Memorial and many more. The KCJT provides players with a series of competitions around the Kansas City metropolitan area. There are five divisions for every tournament including the boys 16 and up division, girls 16 and up division, boys 13 to 15 division, girls 13 to 15 division and the prep division. The top golfer in every division medals after each event. Each junior division and flight have separate season-long standings, based on points earned at each event. The purpose of the Kansas City Junior Tour Standings is to award members points for their participation in KCJT, therefore, resulting in a standing based solely on those points to determine eligibility for the 2018 Kansas City Junior Tour Championship to be played at Lake Quivira on August 2. The Phat Scooter gets its name from the tires, which are 9½ inches wide. What else can you call those big tires but fat? It also has an optional canopy attachment for shade and that Star Wars stormtrooper vibe as you cruise the fairways at a top speed of 20 mph.

In addition to the fun factor, superintendents will thank you for golfing from a scooter instead of a traditional four-wheel cart. A foursome still will ride on eight wheels, like four players in two carts, but that’s where the similarity ends. Four players riding by themselves are able to play noticeably faster.

e’ve all heard the statement, “Golf would be more popular with the younger generations if it were more fun.” Several companies have tried to inject “Fun” with the development of single rider-type golf cart-like vehicles. You may have seen the motorized surfboard-like trolley that golfers stand on as they glide down the fairway. It looked like fun, but several local courses removed them from service after finding out they were quite dangerous to the uneducated wannabe surfer/golfer.

According to Phat Scooter, “The way you measure pounds per square inch is the total weight divided by four and by the inches. If you’ve got a 200-pound golfer in a Phat Scooter, it’s 350 pounds. A golf cart is 2,000 pounds, so four players in scooters are less than half as much pressure. With a lighter footprint, its much easier on the grass.” PGA TOUR player Pat Perez who owns one said, “Like riding a couch.” In a video testimonial at www.PhatGolf.com, Perez added, “I like to ride the scooter, anyway, and I like to golf, so now I can do both. You can kinda be yourself more. You ride by yourself and listen to music if you want. And it’s faster than a golf cart. If each guy in a foursome has one, you can do your own deal and meet at the green.”

New on the single rider scene is the Phat Golf Scooter being promoted by PGA TOUR player Pat Perez. It’s a fat tire two-wheel electric golf scooter now being used at golf resorts, private clubs and daily fee courses to add fun, attract more golfers, increase speed of play and increase revenue.

“It’s very easy to ride in grass or on a cart path. I feel safe on it. I don’t feel like I’m gonna crash and die going down a hill like I do on some other things.” The scooters are available to rent now at some Phoenix-area courses and several courses in Texas. Most of the courses charge about $10 more for a scooter rental than a cart rental. Fun costs more, I guess, but I’d pay the extra and give it a ride! 
