As the saying goes “The best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun”. This egalitarian nature of surfing is what stands it apart and makes it so special. The Salt Circus is first and foremost about a gathering of girls, boys, young, old, frothers and friends who can come together and enjoy a historic collection of beautiful surfboards and experience the sheer joy of riding them together. The Salt Circus 2017 went off like a rocket, the people came, the sun was shining and the waves were firing! Thank you to everyone that came along to share in something we all love so much. Finally we would like to extend a massive thankyou to our sponsors Billabong, Corona, Damaged Goods Zine and Allpress. Without the hard working people behind the scenes this day wouldn’t be possible.

Kiri Binnersley “The salt circus had really good vibes, surfers of all abilities and ages got together to celebrate surfing. I loved trying out all the different styles of boards, especially the Roger Hall ‘Double Hot Curl’. Arohanui.”

Duncan Cameron “I missed the first salt circus event so wanted to be part of it this year. I’ve always loved the vibe of traditional surfing events and with the resurgence in traditional logging this event attracted a huge following with young and old. It was a pleasure to be part of and I look forward to the salt circus next year.

Hester Sutherland Stacey “I had so much fun at Salt Circus. I’m just learning to log so I was delighted with the opportunity to be part of an event that was all about taking part and having fun. It was so good to see so many people entering the event, or coming down to support others, see friends or just check it out and enjoy the sunshine, fun waves and Allpress coffee.”

Sam Guthrie “The salt circus isn’t really a contest but more a gathering of like minded people. Salt circus encompasses why we all surf, for fun.”

Jordan Griffin “I’d say this Day at the beach is amazing! From all the old boards, to the like-minded people riding them. The newer, replicated boards from the 70s and 80s era were epic to see too. Everyone came together and enjoyed some of the best waves The Mount has seen in months.”

Ryan Glover “Thanks so much to everyone for a great event. A lot of work goes into such an epic day so big ups to the organizers. It’s always good to see old and new faces there, my favourite thing about the Salt Circus is the community it encourages. It’s enjoyable looking at all the boards and sharing stories with people young and old. I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Phil Griffin “Surfing made everybody smile. And in the end that’s what surfing’s all about.”

Jess Santorik “The event itself was so chilled and fun. My heat had men and kids. It’s not often you surf in a heat when everyone calling you into waves and cheering you on, it was epic, a nice change from serious events. The atmosphere was the highlight though, such a cool vibe. Can’t beat sitting at the beach drinking free coffee, listening to nice tunes while watching people rip on such sick boards. Everyone was stoked and happy. Isn’t that what it was all about?”

Daryn McBride “When I came home from Australia in 2003 I dreamed of events like this! Highlight for me was surfing a final on a shortboard while my son Harper was out on one of my longboards calling me into waves, kind of summed up the cool vibe of the event! Cheers to all involved in putting the circus together!
