The contemporary fashion of imageless existentialist philosophy, analyzed from the point of view of religion and even theology, is but the reverse side of the splintered coin of the image of the future. This philosophy effectively removes both God and the power of humanistic ideals from any influence on the course of human events. But let us not blâme everything on existential philosophy. Theology, ideology, art, science, social movements, and socialism~in short, the entire style and structure of our society—breathe the spirit of this new time, this radical change in attitude toward the future. Many speak of the décline of our culture, but to our knowledge, no one has laid his finger on the gaping wound from which the lifeblood of the culture is draining away, where the pulsing and impassioned images of the future that hâve always moved man and society now lie torn and stilî.
