FAMILY, COMMUNITY & TZEDAKAH A TRIBUTE TO

MENDY KLEIN A”H

M

endy Klein, A”H, was best known for his philanthropy, but for one closeknit Cleveland family he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Although he was busy around the clock with business and tzedakah, during his last few years he made special efforts to carve out time for his family and to connect with his grandchildren. His children recall that on random mornings Mendy would show up to give his grandchildren a ride to school. On the way, they would stop at the grocery store to pick out treats for the children and their classmates. On other occasions, he would pick up his grandchildren after school and take them out for pizza. Everyone has their own inner “Why?”; a core motivation that is the driving force behind their life story and mission. For Mendy Klein, A”H, that “Why?” was tzedakah. He was not merely someone who “gave tzedakah”, but someone who identified himself with it. Mendy was a partner to Bikur Cholim. He believed in the mission of helping patients

THE CLEVELAND COMPASS | BY BIKUR CHOLIM

and families facing medical crisis. To his last day, he was making efforts to help Bikur Cholim, and one of the last things he did here on this earth was send an email to the the Bikur Cholim staff, introducing them to the CEO of MetroHealth in order to facilitate collaboration. Mendy had a vision of Bikur Cholim as a growing entity with a modern facility that would allow it to run like a welloiled machine. He encouraged the next generation to take the torch of this mission and recruited his family to join the board of directors and help make this vision a reality. Under his direction, members of the board divided and conquered tasks, and each person dealt with matters that most closely matched his or her strengths, improving the efficiency of the organization as a whole. “There are no words that describe what Mendy was for Bikur Cholim,” said Dr. Giela Gellis, Board Member of Bikur Cholim of Cleveland. “He had a powerful vision for the organization—he believed

we could grow and improve, to the point where our services are run as efficiently as any big business.” For Mendy’s closest family, the loss of this towering philanthropist was more than just a community loss, it was a personal one. While the community and family grieve together, Mendy’s children and children-in-law are continuing his legacy of giving and community connection. “He always involved us with his projects. He tried to help us be a part of what he was doing,” said one family member. In fact, Mendy’s vision is kept alive by all those who shared it; his family, the board members and staff of Bikur Cholim, all of whom continue to work toward the goal of growing, modernizing, and streamlining the compassionate work of Bikur Cholim. To learn more about becoming a part of this mission, contact Rabbi Joseph at 216.386.7762 or via email alj@ bikurcholimcleveland.org.

EPIC ACHIEVEMENTS: INSIGHTS FROM DR. DAVID BAR SHAIN You never know exactly how you are going to have an impact on the world. Some people are thrown into new, unexpected situations and they discover new strengths. That’s what happened to Dr. David Bar-Shain. In an exclusive narrative shared with the Compass, Dr. Bar-Shain shares his story, his achievements, and takeaway lessons for those who want to achieve greatness. Back in 1999, I’d been a pediatrician for about a year when our hospital, MetroHealth, started using electronic medical records. The Chair of the Pediatrics appointed me as the department’s liaison to the IT company, EPIC. I had no idea what to expect, and no background in tech, but I plunged right into my responsibilities. It quickly became apparent to me that the EPIC system at the time wasn’t really programmed with pediatric patients - children - in mind (it’s much better

now). I began addressing problems from the ground up and approached our IT Department to try to find solutions. Together, we struggled to build some elements into the system that would make it more user-friendly for pediatricians.

“analyst training.” When I passed my certification exams, I became the Director of Clinical Decision Support for the MetroHealth System. It’s a role that lets me configure our EPIC system to help ensure that our doctors and nurses don’t forget important information while they’re treating our patients.

MY LEARNING EXPERIENCE WITH EPIC WAS ONE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS, & THE WORK I’VE DONE HAS EARNED A NUMBER OF AWARDS FOR BOTH ME & MY HOSPITAL.

A few years later, our current Chief Medical Information Officer invited me to be part of a forum where EPIC met with its top users to learn about how to improve their software. At the same time that EPIC was learning from us, I found out that the company had its own training center. I signed up for what they call

My learning experience with EPIC was one of epic proportions, and the work I’ve done has earned a number of awards for both me and my hospital. We’ve been recognized for using EPIC to increase immunizations and identify high blood pressure, and we’ve won the prestigious HIMSS Davies Awards, one of the highest honors in health informatics. I am proud that I am developing the creativity, the skills, and the national professional standing to help design, implement, evaluate and train improvements to solve future health informatics challenges.

LIVE EPICALLY 4 STEPS FOR GROWTH FROM DR. BAR-SHAIN

1. Never turn down an opportunity to learn. Wading into the world of tech was overwhelming at first and a challenge I never asked for. Now that I’ve done it, my work impacts many doctors and many more patients than I ever imagined.

EXPERT TAILORING at REASONABLE RATES

2. Share knowledge. EPIC brought its users together to learn from them and learn from each other, and their software is improved as a result of that collaboration. I share knowledge also, and to date, I’ve given more than 25 talks in national forums on our health IT innovations in EPIC.

3. Know how to quantify what you’ve achieved.

TA I L O R S H O P

Specific and measurable achievements are much better than general ones. For example, instead of saying, “I make the systems more efficient,” I say, “We saved our nurse practitioners 187,000 mouse clicks per year.”

Peter's Tailor Shop in University Heights is the place

4. Support Bikur Cholim of Cleveland. Jews from all walks benefit from and contribute to Bikur Cholim, and it’s a force we can all rally around and be very proud of. My wife and I donated our minivan to Bikur Cholim, and a chassid from Israel used it while he was here for treatment. But it’s not just about giving, we’ve benefitted from Bikur Cholim, too. When my father (A”H) came to visit, I took advantage of Bikur Cholim’s medical equipment loans and borrowed a walker and shower chair for him to use. We love Bikur Cholim!

to go! We have been in business for the past twenty years and have been providing customers in University Heights and beyond with quality alterations and repairs on all types of garments. We specialize in all formal occasion tailoring and custom suits. Make sure your dress or suit fits perfectly for your next special event! WHY PETER'S TAILOR SHOP? You can count on us for fast, professional alterations of your clothing. We take care to do the highest quality stitching so your clothes will last for years to come.

CARDIAC SURGERY & THE STORY BEHIND THE GLASS

G

ianni Toso puts his heart into all his work. One of the greatest living glass artists and part of a family that has created Murano glass for 700 years, Toso learned from the master glass blowers of Murano, a tiny Venetian island. He combined their methods with his own unique vision to create work that is prized by collectors and museums the world over. But sometimes even the greatest hearts require medical care. When Gianni found that he needed cardiac surgery, it was Bikur Cholim of Cleveland that took care of him and his family. When the couple, who didn’t know a soul in Cleveland, arrived at the Cleveland Clinic, Bikur Cholim housed Gianni and his wife Karyn in one of their guest houses, delivered meals to them, and transported Karyn to visit her husband every day. To this day, Karyn laughs in disbelief as she recalls one freezing day in February, when she looked out the frostcovered window and saw a Bikur Cholim volunteer, digging snow away from the car so that she could get to her husband in the hospital.

“It was not like anything I’d ever experienced before,” Karyn confided, “Bikur Cholim really went above and beyond. They put me up in a hotel over Shabbos so that I could be near the hospital. Mrs. Shapiro gave me the most detailed directions, so

“IT WAS NOT LIKE ANYTHING I’D EVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE, BIKUR CHOLIM REALLY WENT ABOVE & BEYOND.” - Karyn Toso

I would know exactly how to get to Gianni without having to go through any electric doors or elevators on Shabbos. And anytime we needed a snack or a quiet

place to daven, the Bikur Cholim lounge was there for us.” Ever the artist, a grateful Gianni Toso expressed his gratitude with a unique and extremely valuable gift; a stunning creative masterpiece in glass, which he presented to Bikur Cholim of Cleveland. The glasswork, an eloquent Shabbos family scene, was auctioned off and bought by a collector of Toso’s works. The proceeds were used to help Bikur Cholim continue providing services for patients and families in need. Reflecting on her experience, Karyn Toso expresses a deep sentiment of admiration for Bikur Cholim and the Cleveland community as a whole. “Cleveland is blessed with some really worldclass hospitals. It’s the top medical destination.” she said, “And I think that it is zoche to have that prestige because of the incredible giving that happens there-- Hashem knew what the Cleveland community is capable of.”

CARBOHYDRATES Give you energy, but beware...not all carbs are created equal! Sugars - hit the bloodstream full-force and cause insulin to spike. Starches - provide a more steady supply of energy. Aim for whole food plant based starches. Processed starches convert quickly into sugar. Fiber - moves through the body intact, slows the digestion of carbs, and increases production of ghrelin, so you feel fuller faster. Fiber also lowers glycemic load as your body is processing the carbs you’ve eaten.

MOISHELE’S STORY A poster child for the joys of childhood, Moshe Yurevitch’s large eyes and flowing curls announced that he was in love with life as a two-year-old. Until seizures upended the freedom of toddlerhood. Infrequent at first, they caused just a tad of concern. However, when the spams increased, and a slight limp developed, followed by a slowing of the corresponding hand, there was no denying that little Moshe had a problem. Following protocol, the Yurevitches started their rounds of doctor visits. The diagnosis was bad; a malignant tumor growing within Moshe’s toddler size head was slowly overtaking his life. The prognosis was worse: The doctors gave no hope for survival. Moshe’s parents refused to accept that. Running from doctor to doctor and askan to askan, they stumbled through a door that offered hope as thin as the tips of an unraveling thread for them to hold onto. The Yurevitches were told that the smidgen of hope they could hold onto was surgery, which would halt the cancer’s progression – but never cure it. Halt of progression, the doctor explained, equaled a short lifetime in a vegetative state. Firm believers of miracles, the THE CLEVELAND COMPASS | BY BIKUR CHOLIM

Yurevitches clawed their impossible way to top specialists in the country. This time, they were told that surgery could, perhaps, save Moshe. Given the location of the tumor, however, he’d lose his ability to speak. In what seems like an echo of years gone by, medical activists advised them to try the “Goldene medinah.” Perhaps in the medically advanced world of America, a cure could be found. Unrelenting in their quest for a miracle, The Yurevitches scrambled for the funds and soon found their way to New York, home to top medical centers in the country. Their journey was far from over, though. “Cleveland is your only hope,” they were advised. “But we don’t know anyone there.” New York City was enough of culture shock for the Yurevitch family; moving on to another new place, where they know not a soul, seemed daunting. “Lev Miriam Bikur Cholim will care for you as if you’re an only child,” their American benefactors reassured them. Holding onto the last frisson of medical hope, the Yurevitches went to

Cleveland. Unfamiliar with language and culture, the Yurevitches could navigate neither the medical system, nor the city on their own. From the moment of arrival in the airport, the generosity and thoughtfulness of Cleveland Bikur Cholim was apparent. From hot meals to complete Shabbos packages to transportation to comfortable accommodations next to the hospital, the Yurevitches felt the love. “Not only did they pick me up and drop me off, the trips were always arranged with dignity and care,” Mrs. Yurevitch marvels. “Time and again, the Bikur Cholim drivers escorted me right up to my son’s room; they wanted to make sure I wouldn’t get lost in the huge hospital complex.” They also foresaw how the language barrier put the Yurevitches at the disadvantage of feeling helpless and uninvolved when dealing with the medical system. Their solution? A volunteer stepped in to translate between the Yurevitches and the medical team. Every single time Moshe had a test or procedure scheduled, or was transferred from one area to another, they had a translator with them.
