y neighbour asked...

… if he could use my lawnmower and I told him of course he could, so long as he didn't take it out of my garden” said the late Eric Morecambe. Very funny but not very friendly though!

It seemed like an apt quote though to introduce you to a new monthly feature that we’re running called ‘Over the Hedge’. Don’t you just love mooching in estate agents windows, rightmove and the property pages of magazines to see how “other people” live? I know we do - it’s a harmless form of voyeurism that can often take you off into a dream world of how life could be if you lived in a different village/house/ budget. So when we were watching the kids film of the same name we suddenly figured we could run a feature in our own magazines taking a look at people’s gardens. Whether they are big, small, unkempt, manicured, landscaped or hand crafted we want to see them! We are delighted that a lovely couple from Skylark Meadows have put themselves forward for the first month - take a look at their beautiful garden on page 19. Don’t be shy - send us a snap of yours and you could be next! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

Bank holiday season is upon us and I hope we shall continue to enjoy some beautiful sunny days. As well as our regular Sunday and weekday activities we have been hard at work on the Church Without Walls garden, mowing the grass and sowing some areas with wild flower seeds. Despite the cinema works the garden is open. Do go up there and spend some time enjoying the sunshine and watching the birds and insects. Looking ahead we are planning for our involvement with Meadowside Music Festival in July and we look forward to supporting school summer fairs with church involvement at Cornerstone and as individuals at Whiteley Primary School.

babies and children to play with, there’s always a fun craft activity and it’s a good opportunity to meet other parents or carers.

Messy Church

We were back in the community centre for Messy Church in May with the theme ‘Unity in Community’. Amongst other things we baked sharing cookies, thought about who we’d help if someone gave us lots of money to give away, ran 3-legged races and talked about what we can do better and more generously together.

Our next 2 dates, both at Whiteley Community Centre are: Monday Minis is introducing some messy play activities Sunday 7th June 4-6pm alongside the toys and simple craft and at the end of Sunday 5th July 4-6pm April the children enjoyed a ‘shaving foam car wash’! One or two of the mums have responded to our plea for As your local C of E church we are here for the whole more help but we’d still love to hear from anyone else community, not just those who come to worship on who could give us a hand with setting up, putting away Sunday mornings. If you would like to discuss arranging and helping to make the group a welcoming place. If you’re at home with a baby or pre-school children then a Baptism (Christening) , Wedding or Funeral please get in touch with Philippa. come and join us on Monday afternoons in the Community Centre (1-2.45pm). A Fresh Start Last weekend I looked at all the plants in the only border in my garden and decided to take the whole lot out. This decision has been a long time in coming to the tipping point but now that I have done so, I find that I am immensely relieved.

Grass Roots

By Sally Tierney, www.yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk

cannot tell you how happy I feel to be free of that guilty feeling that I ‘ought’ to be out in the garden, weeding it and secondly I have (finally) taken and experienced my own advice! All the gardens that Yorkshire Garden Designer create and build are based Relieved? You might think that this is a round what I call ‘The Garden Equation’ strange reaction to the clearing of a borwhich is a 3 step process which creates der in the garden but the truth of the the foundations that ensures that each matter is that the garden has become a garden fits in beautifully with the lifestyle burden because it no longer fitted into my of the client. I spend so much time maklifestyle. The time I had to look after it ing sure that the gardens of my clients fit when I first designed and planted it has into their lifestyles that I failed to notice been more and more encroached and that my own garden did not any more. eroded every year, as my business, Yorkshire Garden Designer, has grown. So the big question now is to work out what to do differently with this clean The result has been twofold. Firstly, I border. The first thing I shall do is to sit down at the weekend with a cup of tea and go through my own Garden Equation process. The points I will be answering are: Work out exactly what I want to do or like to do when I’m outside.  Analyse the conditions of the garden so I can make sure that the plants I choose will do well there.  Work out and be very realistic

about how much time I have to look after the garden. These 3 steps will create the foundation on which the new design for my garden will be based on and it will take into account that I now have very little time to look after it, so here are some of the things I will be thinking about:

 How can I cut down on the amount of weeding I need to do?

 How can I cut down on the amount of watering required in the summer?

 How can I avoid spending time on staking?

 What will make mowing the lawn less time consuming?

I’ll let you know what I do in the coming months. In the past few months, I have been writing a book about how to apply the Garden Equation for fellow gardeners to follow and its title is , surprisingly, ‘The Garden Equation – how to have a garden you love that fits beautifully into your lifestyle’. It will soon be available on my website.

Little snacks Little forr El fo Elev evenses enses INGREDIENTS 5 stalks of celery 10 tablespoons of peanut butter Quarter of a red pepper, chopped into small pieces

METHOD Making healthy nibbles for children can be super simple, especially if you get them involved. These crunchy nibbles are easy to make and really tasty too! Give the celery a wash under the tap and then cut into smaller sticks about 10cms long. Fill up the inside bit with some peanut butter. Chop up the red pepper into little pieces and add to the top of the peanut butter. Sultanas work well too if you want to add some sweetness!

Remarkable Relationships Jessica offers Life Guidance, connecting back to your spirit, the true heart of you. If you want to know more you can visit her website http://www.jessicamcgregorjohnson.com

Life is for living to the full and that means that in all areas of life you need to go for it! As we all know stretching out of your comfort zone can be both scary and exciting. And it should be! Any goal that is only exciting is too small and we will grow out it far too quickly. Any goal that is only scary is too big and we simply won’t go there. So the right kind of goal is the one that is both scary and exciting! So much for the theory, but what about the practise? When you are sitting in front of a big stretchy goal often one of the challenges is “Can I trust myself to be able to handle this? Will I be able to handle the challenges inherent in this, and succeed?” Of course there are no guarantees that any decision we take will work out as we want. It’s par for the course that we might hit obstacles. It is these challenges that help us grow as human beings, they are a necessary part of our life. However if we feel we can trust ourselves it is so

28

Trusting yourself to go for it!

much easier to take that first step. I recently asked a client to take a walk through his life and identify as many times as he could remember when he hit a challenge and what he did to overcome it. When he reported back the stress was all but gone from his face. He said that he had seen many times (and some he had forgotten about until he did this exercise) when he had indeed hit a challenge, and got himself through it successfully. Sticky situations where he had come up with a solution that until faced with the question he would never had foreseen himself finding. He saw just how resourceful he was in the face of challenges. That information was enough for him to commit to following his heart and trusting himself that he would take care of whatever arose. Sure he went on to make a clear plan of how he would achieve his goal and what contingencies he wanted in place to move

on with it. However, that process of seeing that he could trust himself to take care of not only himself, but his family too, was a key ingredient in the process. Use your past to give you the confidence for the future. When you are faced with a moment when you need to trust yourself that you will make this work, take a moment to look back through your life and see just how resourceful you are. Notice all those challenges and how you overcome them. Also see how each of those challenges taught you something important about yourself or even helped you clarify the direction you wanted to go in. Life is too short not to live it to the full, no one gets to their death bed wishing they’d played it more safe – you learn to trust yourself by playing the game of life full out – so, go for it!
