hen life gets hard and you feel all alone...

… remember you mean the world to somebody and that somebody calls you MUM”

It’s true isn’t it (and also for all the Daddies out there too) that even when you’re having the worst of days, to have a little warm hand squeeze yours, or having your recycling given back to you at the end of a school day reshaped into a ‘train’, warms the cockles of your heart. The joy of being a parent can melt away any of life's daily stresses (although I’m sure we’d all argue that the little blighters normally just add to it a lot of the time!) and that a grin from your cheeky monster is as good as any glass of merlot. Well Ok, maybe not that good but you know what I mean ha, ha! So with mother’s day not far away let them pamper you by all means but have a think of something you can all do together. Why not go for a stomp down the Strawberry Track and nip into the woods for a game of hide and seek, or go a little further afield to Hundred Acre woods and make a den. It’s nice to escape now and then, and you never know, you may not have to clean their muddy boots when you get back. Well after all, that’s what Mother’s Day is for, right?! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

Pay Less to get More

Martin Lewis @MoneySavingExpert

These cold dark days of winter leave many dreaming of summer. Yet don’t let travel lust destroy your wallet. Most people book holidays in the early months of the year, so if you’re jet set on tripping abroad this year, here’s my top tips on how to use the web to pay less to get more. Slash flight costs using the RIGHT comparison. Unlike package holidays with scheduled flights, leaving it until the last minute means prices rocket. So make sure you’re booking in advance and use the right site for the job. - Cheapest price on normal flights: Here, just use a flight comparison site. I like www.kayak.co.uk (for gizmos), www.skyscanner.net (for ease), and www.travelsupermarket.com (for breadth). - Check cheap charter flights comparisons too: If you’re flying to a traditional package holiday destination, like Majorca, you should also check for spare capacity being sold on tour operators' own flights. The comparisons that include these ‘charter flights’ are www.travelsupermarket.com, www.avro.co.uk and www.flightsdirect.com.

- The credit card flight freebie trick. You can get a 'free' Flybe flight anywhere or a BA European flight (you pay taxes) just by signing up to a fee-free credit card, and doing normal spending on it. For a full list of freebies see www.mse.me/ccfreebies. Cut the price for your hotel room. Forget the star system. There's no world standard and it's often about facilities, not quality. To find the hotel you want to stay at read reviews on the ubiquitous www.tripadvisor.co.uk, but always ignore the best and worst 10%. Check comparison sites, both www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com allow you to see who's selling your hotel room for less.

To do this first find the trip you want, then write down all details, then take it to the travel agents who advertise on places like www.teletext.co.uk to see if they will sell you the same holiday for less. Go to a few to find the best price, but to be fair if one has spent a lot of time helping you, always give them the last chance to match it.

Then also be aware there are commonly promo codes available for the big hotel booking sites which can cut your costs by a further 15% for a full list of current ones see www.mse.me/hotelsales.

How to get package holiday protection. Package holidays have long been protected under the ATOL scheme, so if something goes wrong you get your money back (or help coming home).

Tricks to uncover 5-star hotels at 3-star prices. If you've time to play and want the really big discounts, then there are two naughty (but legal) routes.

Yet book a flight plus separate hotel or car hire together (or within 24 hours) from the same travel (not airline) website, and since 2012 you've also got ATOL protection, just like with a package.

- Uncover secret hotels. www.lastminute.com sells secret - Find the perfect time to book: Use the Flight hotels at big discounts, where you know the Insight tab on comparison site star rating, description and rough location, www.momondo.co.uk, eg, on average 59 but aren't told the name till you've paid. Yet days ahead is the perfect time to book, but it by cutting and pasting key words into google varies by destination, so worth a check. then matching up the ‘ratings’ you can uncover them before you book – full step by Flight booking - the clever stuff to cut costs. step in www.mse.me/secrethotels. Once you've found the cheapest price via a comparison, if you want to push harder, you - HUGE discounts with the Priceline bidding need to get clever. loophole. www.priceline.com is a huge US booking site (it works for some European - Book the wrong date trick. Easyjet's cities too). The trick is fiddly, but Flexifares let you switch dates by a few devastatingly lucrative as forumite weeks without paying more. So bag cheap 5*dealhunter found: "Got the 5* term-time flights, then swap for your chosen Renaissance Barcelona Hotel for £59 a night school holiday dates. One of my users saved for 3 nights instead of £310 - a saving of £700 on her family's break, yet there are 81%." If you’ve got 30 minutes to try it see pros and cons. Full step-by-step in my instructions at www.mse.me/priceline. www.mse.me/easyjet. Package holidays can undercut DIY web bookings... especially for 7, 10 or 14 days in a - The codeshare trick. Sometimes two or traditional resort like Majorca, Mykonos or more airlines sell the same flights and Malia (and some that don't start with an booking via one partner is cheaper, eg, a M). In brief... United flight from Birmingham to New York can be cheaper via Lufthansa. When to book? Massive savings are possible in the late market, where deals are done - Ethnic travel agents trick. If you're going within eight weeks of travel, yet of course somewhere with a big UK ethnic or there's restricted choice and you may need immigrant community, check out niche to be flexible. So if you need special facilities travel agents catering to them. Eg, London's (eg, for families) you need to book now and Shepherd's Bush has some Caribbean try to cut prices down. specialists, or the Jewish Chronicle advertises cheap flights to Israel.

8

How to cut prices? Remember tour operators make holidays, travel agents sell them. So one operator's holiday may be on sale at many travel agents - the aim is to find who'll sell it cheapest. Either scan for discounts, or often more lucratively, but more time consuming, is to haggle.

So check if it's not much more expensive compared to booking the cheapest flight and hotel separately. Also bear in mind www.expedia.co.uk, www.travelocity.co.uk, www.ebookers.com and www.lastminute.com often give extra discounts for flights and hotels booked together.

Naturally good.. Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans

Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice 60ml chicken stock 1tbsp. reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour.

1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries.

Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long. Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb chef - www.thefoodbible.com

Finding Inspiration There are some days when we simply effervesce inspiration, ideas flow into our minds so fast we cannot even capture them quickly enough. We write them down and hope that when we get around to taking action to bring the idea to life that we will be able to capture everything that was flowing around inside of us at that moment when the ideas hit.

It’s all child's play If you live in or have ever visited the UK/ Northern Hemisphere during March then you may literally have experienced all four seasons in one go. From biting cold to sunshine, chilling wind to balmy temperatures and possibly a smattering of snow and sleet in between, it is no coincidence that according to a 17th century saying March ‘comes in like a lion and out like a lamb’. With Winter feeling like it’s dragging its feet and Spring never going to get here, March can be a frustrating time for us adults. For children though there really is no such thing as bad weather so what better time to don coats and wellies and enjoy our abundant weather? If you need some inspiration here’s some ideas for fun things to do, whatever the weather! If it’s Windy...

If safe to do so, sit huddled up outdoors listening to the sound of the wind and rustling leaves.

 Listen to or make up a story with the wind as the main character. 

Create wind chimes from old CD’s and shells etc to hang in the trees and listen and watch them move.

Create simple windmills for exploring wind direction.

22

If it’s Rainy...

Find some puddles to splash and jump in.

Marvellous March Weather

Sit in a tent or snuggled under an umbrella outdoors and simply listen to the sound of the rain on the canvas.

Trace the lines of rain drops with fingers on the window panes.

Play rain drop races as you see whose rain drop trail will reach the bottom of the pane first.

Create rivers and dams with left over guttering and have mini boat races. If it’s Cloudy

Lie on the floor looking at the clouds to play a spot the shape or animal game.

 Have a hunt outdoors to spot the first shoots and talk about which plants they think they will grow into. If it’s Sunny...

  

Go on a shadow hunt.

Make a simple sundial to explore time.

Make shadow animals.

Lay some sugar paper in the sun with some objects arranged on top. After an hour or more check what patterns have been left and use to play a matching game with the objects.

Have fun writing or painting on the floor with water and watching the writing and pictures disappear as the sun dries the water. Whatever the weather, this is a great time for captivating, exciting and enlightening children about the world around us. If we adults can take the time to look at our world through the eyes of a child then maybe we too can appreciate the joys of March. Sensei Says

Sensei Rob Wood is a Fourth Dan in Goju-Ryu Karate and has taught children and adults for over 20 years in his dojo in the UK South Coast.

Is the study of Martial Arts out of date? Interesting question and one that can be addressed in so many ways. Firstly, Martial Arts comes in many different forms and most of the traditional ones are several hundred years old.

was significantly underdeveloped in travel & communications. To place a finer point, think of it this way, in the 1800’s to go to another country would take months or longer, to learn a martial art in that foreign land and return to your students So let’s address the “traditional” could take several years and much of ones. These are styles of martial art it only to be lost in the ether of time. that have been in place for a long These days we can travel or search time but researched through the the web OR pop along to your local decades are as close as you’re going Boxing, Thai, MMA club and do it in a to get to the original type of teaching trial to make that assessment if it’s as when they were initially something worth pursuing. developed. How in the marketplace and this has time consuming?! already become apparent simply in the availability of what’s out there As I said before, most countries have right now. a fighting arts that have a uniqueness about them. However, what you get from a nontraditional style is a broader teaching syllabus and one that allows the instructor to seek out sometimes more effective methods of selfdefence techniques that may be more effective than those adhered to by traditionalists. Which only adds to making the style more exciting and enjoyable for students and Sensei alike. These days there is so much on the self-defence / sport scene it’s really quite incredible. Obviously Martial Arts is a great way for developing fitness and confidence but with so much available it’s really down to what the Sensei is teaching and how broad their understanding is and that can only be achieved by taking off the blinkers. So, are traditional styles out dated? No, if you are a purist and want the teachings of a “Master” who developed a fighting art without knowledge of other systems then these are for you, but be quick, they won’t be here for long! If however you are after a Martial Art that has taken off the lenses of tradition then there is a LOT out there in our communities. Go find it!

Lavender

Belonging to the mint family, lavender is a popular choice in many gardens as it provides a beautiful scent and splash of colour to many borders and rockeries alike. Many gardeners can’t resist the romance of lavender - blowing gently in the breeze or cut stems in vases make for a pretty picture.

Lavenders will tolerate many growing conditions and thrives well in warm, welldrained soil and if you can encourage a chalky soil you’ll enhance the scent of the plant. Make sure you give them a good handful of compost when first planted and lots of water.

Lent is well under way and we’re very much enjoying the generosity challenges provided by www.40acts.org.uk Each day there’s a choice of ways to respond from a quick 5 minute action to something that will take rather more thought and time. So far we’ve surprised friends with a note or a gift, picked up litter, sent thank you notes, made Fair Trade choices and a whole lot of other things! The schools have been joining in too and I’ve loved hearing about how the children have been ‘kindness ninjas’, secretly leaving encouraging notes for their classmates; tidying their classrooms without being asked(!); picking up litter; making a special effort to say thank you.

Monday Minis continues to be a popular group with parents and carers. We’ve been pleased to welcome a number of new babies and toddlers in the last month. We serve Fair Trade tea and coffee to the parents and we’re very grateful to Fareham Borough Council for a grant to buy re-suable lidded cups. GARDEN TV MAKEOVERS—DO THEY TELL THE FULL STORY?

This month, I’m going to have a little ‘rant’. The TV programmes on gardens and garden design are entertaining, informative and inspiring, aren’t they? Yes they are, but in my opinion, they do not tell the full story. You might think that, as the MD of Yorkshire Garden Designer, this is a case of ‘sour grapes’ between one garden design opinion and another but let me give you an illustration. The presenter of a particular type of show gets the owners of the garden to leave on some flimsy excuse and gets to work on it in their absence, with his/her crack team of landscapers. They strip the garden of all the old, sad plants, the old, sad furniture and any other debris that they can find . They then bring in lots of lovely new plants, perhaps lay a new lawn, install a beautiful new water feature, lay a patio, meander a few paths around and generally tidy the place up, the like of which it has never seen before. The garden owner comes home again and is amazed, delighted and charmed by the changes that have sprung up. The whole thing has taken 2 days from start to finish and the overall impression imparted is that giving the garden a ‘makeover’ is easy, simple and anyone can do it. If they can, so can you! This is where my point of the TV programmes only giving half the story comes in. Yes, it is easy to learn what to do, if you take the time to do so (as with everything) but what the programme has not shown you was how long it took to survey the garden accurately, draw it up, test out ideas, find

the right plants that are suitable to the conditions in that particular garden, check the drainage, find the hard landscaping materials etc etc. The principles of design have evolved through hard-won experience and for a garden to become a wonderful place, they must be followed. There are other essential steps that must be implemented into the planning stages as well, such as establishing the brief and talking about the after care. What is the point of giving someone a garden makeover if you don’t know what they want or if they are able to look after the garden once the TV crews have left? So when you see someone on TV, transforming a dull space into a delightful one, remember that they are the ‘tip of the iceberg’ and spare a thought for the rest of the team who are out of sight - the designer who created and developed the idea, the contractor who built it, the electrician who put in the lighting or the pump for the water feature and the nurseryman who’s skill raised the plants that were put into the garden. OK rant over. Written by Sally Tierney MSGD BSc (Hons),. She specializes in making the most of the space in small to medium sized gardens through the use of good design and the right plants. She passionately believes that no garden should become a burden on its owners and so she goes to great lengths to design a garden that fits in with the client’s life style, not the other way round. You can see pictures of successful gardens on her website here www.yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk
