hen life gets hard and you feel all alone...

… remember you mean the world to somebody and that somebody calls you MUM”

It’s true isn’t it (and also for all the Daddies out there too) that even when you’re having the worst of days, to have a little warm hand squeeze yours, or having your recycling given back to you at the end of a school day reshaped into a ‘train’, warms the cockles of your heart. The joy of being a parent can melt away any of life's daily stresses (although I’m sure we’d all argue that the little blighters normally just add to it a lot of the time!) and that a grin from your cheeky monster is as good as any glass of merlot. Well Ok, maybe not that good but you know what I mean ha, ha! So with mother’s day not far away let them pamper you by all means but have a think of something you can all do together. Why not go for a stomp down the Haven and nip into the café for some tea and cake, or go a little further afield to Hundred Acre woods and make a den. It’s nice to escape now and then, and you never know, you may not have to clean their muddy boots when you get back. Well after all, that’s what Mother’s Day is for, right?! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

St Fait hs’ Communit y

When I first saw ‘ICANGO’ emblazoned on the front of the minibuses parked at St Faith’s I wondered what the word meant and, since it rhymed with Tango, I assumed it might refer to some kind of new Argentinean dance until I realised it was a combination of three words, I Can Go! I’ve since discovered that for people living in the area, ‘I Can Go’ means exactly what it says if a bus with a driver is needed for any occasion. Costs to users are kept to a minimum and only used to cover costs and provide a small profit to maintain and develop the service. On the 13th of February this year, Caroline Dinenage M.P., Councillor Chris Carter, St Faith’s vicar, Paul Chamberlain and the charity’s volunteers arrived at St Faith’s for the launch of the ICANGO service with Eckersley White, Estate Agents, as its new official sponsors. As such

8

the firm will provide for the mechanical maintenance of the buses and, with the volunteers, ensure that the service continues to grow.

to train and assess drivers for the MIDAS certificate run by Hampshire C.C., a legal requirement, and to give refresher tests required every four years.

Although the official launch took place last month, the service began eight years ago when two Lee residents, Connie Jolly (hence the name, ‘Jolly buses’) and Lawrence Brodley, a local resident, wondered if might be possible to provide a minibus so that older people in the area who had no means of transport could be taken on trips to various places for pub lunches and afternoon teas. Lawrence contacted other organisations and managed to hire buses from them when required. Soon other helpers became involved including Cliff Rook (who appears in the photo standing next to Caroline Dinenage) and who is still one of the volunteer drivers. He is also qualified

A committee was formed with Peter Sutton (then St Faith’s vicar) as chairman, Lawrence as secretary and Mike Tiernan as treasurer. Peter provided parking space at the church and Pippa, his wife, acted as ‘scheduler’ taking bookings and arranging drivers. In time with contributions from local people, Hampshire County Council, Fareham Community Transport, Gosport Voluntary Action and a donation from Lawrence before he moved away there were eventually three buses available for use. Since then there have been a number of developments. The service has become a registered charity, Lee ICANGO. Committee

members have changed over time with Adrian Groves currently in the Chair and Sue Morgan acting as scheduler and juggling dates, bus availability and contacts etc. There are now regular commitments when various groups are transported to meetings including Parkinson’s Disease (PDS), Alzheimers, Gosport Display Club, Stroke clubs and Chesterholm etc. Wheelchair facilities are provided for those who need them. As well as travelling all over the south of England, one of the buses has ventured as far the Scottish Highlands. There are currently 14 volunteer drivers and others who

clean and maintain the vehicles. After its recent launch with Eckersley White as its official sponsor, it hoped that the service will continue to expand and be used by schools, local parties and other organisations. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or, just as importantly, if you live in the area and think a Jolly bus might suit some activity you have in mind, please telephone 07787 292666. ‘Serving the local community’ appears on all of the buses and serving the local community is exactly what the ‘ICANGO Lee’ charity aims to do.

exhibiting will give you this information. A gallery or art dealer representing the artist will be able to tell you By Gita Joshi, AWAD. www.orsomajor.com what you need to know so it’s worth asking the question about where they have showed or what I’m often asked by clients how an artists they have coming up. prices rise and if the art work they are interested will rise in value. The first thing to remember is that art dealers are Another way that artists prices generally not financial advisors. However there are rise is when a museum – the institutions a few sure fire ways that make an artist that are cultural barometers – buy into an collectable, raise their profile and in turn artist. Once art enters public collections their prices, and here we look at three of it generally positions the artists as collectable. collector, a celebrity or a corporate collection, can also affect the positioning of an artist as collectable. Collectors in this category are also often taste makers. They buy for investment as much as pleasure with the long game in mind. Asking the gallerist about this can give you the answers you need as it may not always be information in the public domain. So there you have it, three ways to check if the artist you are interested in is an investment. Buying art for investment is a long term strategy, and the best approach to buying art is to start with answering the question, do you love it, and do you want to live with it. After that, any rise in value is a bonus.

In house chat Well, spring has sprung and lightened the general mood and it’s this time of year that I really love in Lee on the Solent – the seafront becomes a bustling hive of activity with everyone trying to grab their cups of tea and coffee on the seafront, with some even sampling the ice cream in readiness for some sunshine! A little bit of sunshine has also started to see a few more first time property buyers emerge, so this month I just wanted to touch on a bit of advice for anyone who may be looking to purchase their first home in Lee on the Solent or surrounding areas. If you are looking to buy your first home one of things you’ll quickly realise is how the process will stir up a whole host of emotions and experiences, some of which include: Excitement, anticipation, stress, confusion, anxiety and perhaps even elation! Ok, so I’m not painting a very good picture, am I!? But don’t fret, being forearmed with even just a basic understanding of the process and ensuring you are prepared before you start your search is the key to a happy purchase. Finances Before you start to look at properties you will need to speak with an independent mortgage advisor who can search the entire mortgage market for the best deal for your circumstances. It’s essential you don’t limit yourself to just your bank when it comes to finding a mortgage deal, remember they will only give you what they can offer, take advantage of the entire marketplace as each lender looks at your circumstances in different ways. Once you have a better idea of what you can afford, the next step is the exciting part. You are now fully armed to get out there and start searching for a property. Ensure your contact details are registered with all of the local agents and utilise the main property websites: Rightmove.co.uk and OnTheMarket.com to keep updated via instant property alerts. On average, people view around ten properties before they make a decision on which one to buy, so your next step is to get out there and arrange some viewings.

20

FIRST TIME BUYERS

Mark Rowe, MD & Owner of RPS Estate and Letting Agents What to look for So this is the first time you’ve viewed a property, the chances are you haven’t got a clue what to look for and you may even find yourself asking silly questions to the owner or agent, but don’t worry this is perfectly normal and no one expects you to be seasoned property investor with years of property knowledge. The bottom line is that there’s a mountain of questions you could ask, but I’ve listed a few below that should get you started: - What’s the owners’ situation moving forward? Will they need to find a property, have they already found and what are the timescales involved? This could dictate the timescale you may have to try and work to. - The property may have recently had a sale agreed but has become re-available. Ask the owner or the agent why the sale fell through and satisfy yourself that the reason is genuine. It could have been a survey problem, if so, would it be something you’re happy to proceed with? - What are your intentions with the property? Are you looking to sell it within a few years to upgrade or is this a long term move? Either way it’s worth considering the overall saleability of the property and the value you could potentially add for future sale. Offer stage Scared yet? I completely understand! The important thing to remember is not to get too carried away and pay what the property is worth to you. The mortgage company will want to conduct a mortgage valuation anyway and will ensure you are not potentially overpaying for the

property. The fact that you don’t have a property to sell yourself and no chain behind you can be an advantage in some cases so this can be used to negotiate, but isn’t always something you should rely on to get a good deal! Present your situation clearly and the timescales you are willing to work too and be fair with your offer, you always have the opportunity to increase and the worst that can happen is that the owner says no. I’ve just realised that I’m running out of space in this article… So if this has piqued your interest and you would like some advice on the next stages then be sure to check back next month where I talk about the sales process (the slightly stressful bit!), how to keep yourself fully informed and produce the best outcome – your first home!

Naturally good.. Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans

Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice 60ml chicken stock 1tbsp. reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour.

1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries.

Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long. Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb chef - www.thefoodbible.com

Sensei Says

Sensei Rob Wood is a Fourth Dan in Goju-Ryu Karate and has taught children and adults for over 20 years in his dojo in the UK South Coast.

Is the study of Martial Arts out of date? Interesting question and one that can be addressed in so many ways. Firstly, Martial Arts comes in many different forms and most of the traditional ones are several hundred years old.

world during a time where the planet was significantly underdeveloped in travel & communications. To place a finer point, think of it this way, in the 1800’s to go to another country would take months or longer, to learn a martial art in that foreign So let’s address the “traditional” land and return to your students ones. These are styles of martial art could take several years and much of that have been in place for a long it only to be lost in the ether of time. time but researched through the These days we can travel or search decades are as close as you’re going the web OR pop along to your local to get to the original type of teaching Boxing, Thai, MMA club and do it in a as when they were initially trial to make that assessment if it’s developed. something worth pursuing. Some see these teachings as being the elite, since they are untainted by alteration and nothing has been lost in translation over time whereas others like to think that way back then, the originators had blinkered vision regarding what the body can do to defend itself against physical aggression. In my opinion, another 50 years will cease to see truly “traditional” styles in the marketplace and this has already become apparent simply in the availability of what’s out there right now.

That said, Sensei’s should always keep a focus on the discipline they grew up with BUT make it exciting yet still physically challenging and at the same time keeping the root of what they teach, linked as closely as possible to their particular style. Personally speaking, Instructors should experience other martial arts / fighting styles and be willing to adopt things that work more effectively than those aspects taught for traditions sake. Keep in mind that founders of all traditional root styles inhabited a

Let’s face it, these days we can all compare Japanese, Korean, Thai, Brazilian etc styles in seconds by using the Internet. 50+ years ago the only way we’d have had visibility to these would be to travel there to experience them for ourselves. How time consuming?!

whether it be Karate, Thai boxing or MMA etc. A punch is still a punch no matter what form of activity you do. However, what you get from a nontraditional style is a broader teaching syllabus and one that allows the instructor to seek out sometimes more effective methods of selfdefence techniques that may be more effective than those adhered to by traditionalists. Which only adds to making the style more exciting and enjoyable for students and Sensei alike. These days there is so much on the self-defence / sport scene it’s really quite incredible. Obviously Martial Arts is a great way for developing fitness and confidence but with so much available it’s really down to what the Sensei is teaching and how broad their understanding is and that can only be achieved by taking off the blinkers.

So, are traditional styles out dated? No, if you are a purist and want the teachings of a “Master” who developed a fighting art without knowledge of other systems then As I said before, most countries have these are for you, but be quick, they a fighting arts that have a uniqueness won’t be here for long! If however you are after a Martial Art that has about them. Generally I find that taken off the lenses of tradition then 70% of a system cross-breeds with there is a LOT out there in our other forms of martial arts in some way or other. I’m by no means a guru communities. in every fighting art out there and I’m Go find it! not encouraging readers to try and become a master of as many different styles as possible but I do have a fair amount of exposure to a few (Karate, Thai Boxing, MMA, Boxing…). Take a Mawashi Geri (roundhouse kick), this is performed in exactly the same way in any style that adopts this particular kicking technique

Auto biographies New Nissan Qashqai flagship Tekna trim. But we’ll come to that in a bit. Firstly, here’s some background. The second generation, family oriented car is now longer, lower and wider, giving it a more imposing stance while maintaining a raised driving position. The vehicle under review is front-wheel drive, the set-up which Nissan says will account for most sales, but allwheel drive is available too.

The latest Nissan Qashqai, which went on sale in January 2014, is available in four time-honoured grades: Visia, Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna. The model tested here comes in

The Qashqai's exterior looks modern and there’s a better quality feel to the cabin - perfect for many years of hardcore family use. The range -topping Tekna model features an array of technologies that highlight the Japanese motor manufacturer’s lead in

the crossover market. But hang on, what is a crossover vehicle? Well, it’s a motor built on a car platform, combining characters of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with elements from an estate or a hatchback. The crossover mixes SUV design cues such as tall interior packaging, lofty seating, high centre of gravity and elevated ground-clearance with car-like handling and good fuel economy. Anyway, back to the Tekna trim Qashqai under review. The Nissan benefits from darkness piercing Bi-LED headlamps and it excels when it comes to kit. The car comes equipped with 19inch alloy wheels, roof rails, partleather seats, a large glass roof, heated seats, and front and rear parking

sensors. There’s also a seven-inch touchscreen display, DAB digital radio, and smartphone connectivity. The Qashqai is available with a petrol or diesel engine; the review car came with turbocharged petrol power. But it turns out that the Nissan doesn’t need anything huge under the bonnet to deliver a first-rate drive. Motoring through a six-speed manual transmission, the 1.2-litre engine packs a punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater flexibility than the first generation Qashqai’s 1.6-litre unit. Despite its modest size, the engine’s low weight and more fuel-efficient operation also mean it’s cleaner and more economical than the model it replaces. The 1.2 engine emits just 129g/km of CO₂ (15g/km less than the outgoing 1.6-litre petrol unit), and has an average fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg.

Being a family car, you’d expect safety to be a priority for the Qashqai – and you’d be right. The Nissan features a host of innovative safety features which helped it confidently pass all Euro NCAP's tests to record the maximum five-star rating.

Engineered to offer the best possible levels of protection for children, the fresh Qashqai particularly shone in the Child Occupant tests. Book Review by Viviane Schwarz This is great fun! Tiny, Moonpie and Andre are scared of dogs so when they smell something funny – what can it be? It’s not a dog is it? Everyone knows that dogs are yappy, smelly and noisy and that they hate cats! So, they all try and hide from him - behind the couch, under the piano, in the wardrobe - but when the little doggy finally finds them, well, they simply can't get enough of him! He is really very soft and they just want to cuddle and play with him.

Yep, buy this car and your offspring will be safe from harm – even if it means you lose all individuality when you merge into the vast sea of other Nissan Qashqais parked outside the school gates.

Children will love the humour and the flaps and pop ups. The illustrations are quirky but quite simple in layout and full of fun.

Pay Less to get More

Martin Lewis

@MoneySavingExpert

These cold dark days of winter leave many dreaming of summer. Yet don’t let travel lust destroy your wallet. Most people book holidays in the early months of the year, so if you’re jet set on tripping abroad this year, here’s my top tips on how to use the web to pay less to get more.

booking via one partner is cheaper, eg, a United flight from Birmingham to New York can be cheaper via Lufthansa.

- Ethnic travel agents trick. If you're going somewhere with a big UK ethnic or immigrant community, check out niche travel agents catering to them. Eg, London's Shepherd's Bush has some Slash flight costs using the RIGHT Caribbean specialists, or the Jewish comparison. Unlike package holidays with Chronicle advertises cheap flights to scheduled flights, leaving it until the last Israel. minute means prices rocket. So make sure - The credit card flight freebie trick. You you’re booking in advance and use the can get a 'free' Flybe flight anywhere or a right site for the job. BA European flight (you pay taxes) just by signing up to a fee-free credit card, and - Cheapest price on normal flights: Here, doing normal spending on it. For a full list just use a flight comparison site. I like of freebies see www.mse.me/ccfreebies. www.kayak.co.uk (for gizmos), www.skyscanner.net (for ease), Cut the price for your hotel room. Forget and www.travelsupermarket.com (for the star system. There's no world breadth). standard and it's often about facilities, not quality. To find the hotel you want to stay - Check cheap charter flights comparisons at read reviews on the ubiquitous too: If you’re flying to a traditional www.tripadvisor.co.uk, but always ignore package holiday destination, like Majorca, the best and worst 10%. Check you should also check for spare capacity being sold on tour operators' own flights. The comparisons that include these ‘charter flights’ are www.travelsupermarket.com, www.avro.co.uk and www.flightsdirect.com. - Find the perfect time to book: Use the Flight Insight tab on comparison site www.momondo.co.uk, eg, on average 59 days ahead is the perfect time to book, but it varies by destination, so worth a check. Flight booking - the clever stuff to cut costs. Once you've found the cheapest price via a comparison, if you want to push harder, you need to get clever. - Book the wrong date trick. Easyjet's Flexifares let you switch dates by a few weeks without paying more. So bag cheap term-time flights, then swap for your chosen school holiday dates. One of my users saved £700 on her family's break, yet there are pros and cons. Full step-bystep in www.mse.me/easyjet. - The codeshare trick. Sometimes two or more airlines sell the same flights and

comparison sites, both www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com allow you to see who's selling your hotel room for less. Then also be aware there are commonly promo codes available for the big hotel booking sites which can cut your costs by a further 15% for a full list of current ones see www.mse.me/hotelsales. Tricks to uncover 5-star hotels at 3-star prices. If you've time to play and want the really big discounts, then there are two naughty (but legal) routes. - Uncover secret hotels. www.lastminute.com sells secret hotels at big discounts, where you know the star rating, description and rough location, but aren't told the name till you've paid. Yet by cutting and pasting key words into google then matching up the ‘ratings’ you can uncover them before you book – full step by step in www.mse.me/ secrethotels.

Cont... - HUGE discounts with the Priceline bidding loophole. www.priceline.com is a huge US booking site (it works for some European cities too). The trick is fiddly, but devastatingly lucrative as forumite 5*dealhunter found: "Got the 5* Renaissance Barcelona Hotel for £59 a night for 3 nights instead of £310 - a saving of 81%." If you’ve got 30 minutes to try it see my instructions at www.mse.me/priceline. Package holidays can undercut DIY web bookings... especially for 7, 10 or 14 days in a traditional resort like Majorca, Mykonos or Malia (and some that don't start with an M). In brief... When to book? Massive savings are possible in the late market, where deals are done within eight weeks of travel, yet of course there's restricted choice and you may need to be flexible. So if you need special facilities (eg, for families) you need to book now and try to cut prices down.

How to cut prices? Remember tour operators make holidays, travel agents sell them. So one operator's holiday may be on sale at many travel agents - the aim is to find who'll sell it cheapest. Either scan for discounts, or often more lucratively, but more time consuming, is to haggle. To do this first find the trip you want, then write down all details, then take it to the travel agents who advertise on places like www.teletext.co.uk to see if they will sell you the same holiday for less. Go to a few to find the best price, but to be fair if one has spent a lot of time helping you, always give them the last chance to match it.

So check if it's not much more expensive compared to booking the cheapest flight and hotel separately. Also bear in mind www.expedia.co.uk, www.travelocity.co.uk, www.ebookers.com and www.lastminute.com often give extra discounts for flights and hotels booked together.

How to get package holiday protection. Package holidays have long been protected under the ATOL scheme, so if something goes wrong you get your money back (or help coming home). Yet book a flight plus separate hotel or car hire together (or within 24 hours) from the same travel (not airline) website, and since 2012 you've also got ATOL protection, just like with a package.
