The calm before the storm...

So finally, the month of ‘chill’ has arrived in my home. The Birthday celebrations are done for another year and Christmas is on the horizon. Many of you (very organised ones) may already be preparing for the festive season by getting your gift shopping done or pre-writing greetings cards. I however, will be making the most of this quieter month but I won’t be forgetting one of my favourite Christmas traditions, ‘Stir-up Sunday’! My father in law loves his Christmas cake and if you are a regular reader you will know I love a family tradition! Every year I make him (and us) a Christmas cake and we always do it on ‘stir-up Sunday’. If you are wondering what it is all about, well…..traditionally, families gather together in the kitchen of their homes to mix and steam Christmas pudding (we substitute the pudding for cake) on Stir-up Sunday. Parents teach their children how to mix the ingredients for the pudding and everyone takes a turn to stir the pudding mix and make a special wish for the year ahead. It’s always on the last Sunday before the season of advent and this year falls on Sunday 24th November. It’s really lovely and a great way to kick start the festive season. November is also a month of remembrance. This year, in June, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landing and the Battle of Normandy. What a momentous occasion to celebrate peace and liberty. Today we are very lucky to enjoy a much more luxurious life and it is easy to forget the sacrifice that many young men and women made to give us this freedom. Take time to remember them, wear your poppy with pride and perhaps while stirring your Christmas cake, you could spare a wish for those who still experience conflict today. Apparently, it’s the day when some wishes come true…

Mum’s the Word

Looking for a super easy and fun craft to do with the children to celebrate Fireworks Night, then give this a whirl! You and the kids can make these cool fork firework prints which require practically no preparation. All you need is a fork, a few colours of paint and some paper. Pop the different colour paints into some small containers and ask the kids to dip the bottom of their fork into a colour and press it down on the paper so it shows the lines. Suggest they go round in a circle to make a firework shape. Wipe off the fork and dip it into another colour and press it down on to the paper over the top of the first colour. Easy peasy fireworks! You could also use black paper and add white paint too!

If your children are like mine and love wrapping up warm to watch one (or more) of the local firework displays. Here is what is happening locally: Whiteley Fireworks, Meadowside Field, Sunday 27th October 2019 Gates open at 4.15pm with the main display at 7.15pm Fairground attractions, catering and music! Gate Tickets: Children up to 16 £3, Adults £5. No family tickets are available on the gate. Pre-purchase and save £1 per ticket or buy a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) £12. Family tickets are pre-purchase tickets are available from Imagin, Market Square - CASH ONLY HMS Sultan Bonfire Night, Wednesday 30th October 2019 Gates open at 6pm, bonfire lit at 7.15pm & main display at 8pm Entertainment, funfair, catering, music and glow sticks! Under 5’s FREE, Children (5-14) £4, Adults £5 and a family ticket (2 adults + 2 kids) is £15. Advanced tickets are available now at a reduced price from local vendors including Tesco Rowner, Tourist Information Centre and HMS Sultan booking website.

Top Tip! I saw this on Facebook! Kids love sparklers but the metal part can become extreamly hot, very quickly. So stick the end of your sparkler into a carrott! This makes them easier to hold, does not conduct heat and the sparkler can be held futher away from the body. Genius :)

Henry Cort Community College, Monday 4th November 2019 Gates open at 5pm with the main display at 7pm Amusements, refreshments, entertainment and a raffle! Gate Tickets: Children (3-16yrs) £4, Adults £7. No family tickets are available on the gate. Pre-purchase tickets and save! Children £3, Adults £5 and a family ticket (2 adults and 2 kids) £15

Gunwharf Quays will not be holding a firework display this year. This year Gunwharf Quays supported a firework display which was part of the 75th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings held in June and organised by Portsmouth City Council 12

St Faith’s

Bethlehem comes to St. Faith’s! Models of the characters around the crib are a common sight in churches over the Christmas period. The only problem is that models are static and silent. The people can’t talk and the animals don’t moo, bleat or whinny. Like the figures described in Keats’ ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’, we can only imagine what they would say if they could speak. We might want to know more about their stories and how they are feeling but there’s no point in asking them. They always hold their peace! On Sunday 8th December from 1pm – 4 pm, St Faith’s will be holding a Live Nativity when, in addition to buying gifts, you can see live animals and spend time hearing the stories of actors in costume playing the parts of characters present at the original nativity. The idea came about when Mary Kells, our curate, heard about the Live Nativity at our neighbouring parish of Holy Rood, Stubbington. After seeing what happened there, she wondered if St Faith’s could do something similar. With Holy Rood’s encouragement and helpful advice, Mary proposed the idea to our ministry team and PCC who agreed to give it a try. At the time of writing this, the arrangements are still in their infancy but, if everything goes to plan, here is what will be happening. Firstly, after being greeted at our Lowry Room entrance and serenaded by carol singers, you will enter the church to encounter the different ‘Nativity’ stations. Visiting each, you can meet the actors dressed as angels, wise men and shepherds and hear their scripted stories, which I’m told will be lively and fun. You’ll also have the chance to call in at the inn and see the stable to boot! There will be a Christmas tree where, after all this excitement, you can have a quiet moment to write your own prayer and hang it on the tree. You’ll then be directed to the Bulson Hall where you can buy refreshments, enjoy some musical entertainment and visit our home-grown Christmas stalls to stock up 14

on Christmas wreaths etc. There will also be a bottle tombola and raffle. Children will have an opportunity to make a Christmas craft item to take home and dress up in Nativity clothes. Last but not least, there will be an opportunity to interact with the live animals (sheep, goats, giant chickens, colourful bantams, miniature donkeys) supplied by Miller’s Ark, Hook, and a giant rabbit and guinea pig to handle and stroke outside the church – not inside as in the Christmas episode of The Vicar of Dibley! We would like to thank Holy Rood, Stubbington for their generosity, as well as the Mission Opportunities Fund of the Diocese of Portsmouth for supporting this initiative with a generous grant which will help towards covering the costs. It means we can offer entrance to all of this for a mere £3 or £5 per family (no matter how large!). Mary’s enthusiasm for the Live Nativity together with all she and her team are doing to make it a success deserves our support. Though different from previous years, I am sure it will prove to be thoroughly enjoyable. Limited space means there will be fewer stalls than usual but Mary and her team are keen to stress how grateful they are to those stall-holders who have supported us at previous fairs and we are really sorry to disappoint those who will not be with us this year. Nevertheless, this will be a new and exciting venture so please make a note of the date and come if you can. We really want this to be the first of many similar occasions which everyone in the community will enjoy and want to attend. Written by Alan Millard for St Faith’s Church, Lee on the Solent. Watering & Wellies

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BULBS, BABY! Planting ahead for future gardening delights The autumn and winter months may seem somewhat dismal but there are things you can do now to make the future bright and happy. And that, my friends, comes in the shape of a bulb. Natures amazing packets of magic that never fail to deliver. Even if you don’t really know what you’re doing with them! But the best thing about gardening is in the experimentation. You can’t really get it wrong as nature has a funny way of intervening and sorting out your failures. Have a go at planting bulbs in pots. You can go for the traditional tulips, crocuses and daffodils and pop them into smaller containers inside. This will give you a sneak preview of spring in January if you keep them inside. Look at planting hyacinths and amaryllis—you can easily obtain these bulbs in most garden centres and hardware shops—and because these bulbs have been through a series of cold treatments the growing process has already been triggered and you will be blessed with stunning blooms over the Christmas period. Do remember, though, on planting these, that they get very top heavy so pick a pot to suit. The last thing you’ll want is for your efforts to come cascading down in a pile of compost. You can ‘pretty up’ your container with a top layer of grass or moss. So as well as your indoor bulbs, have a go at laying some out in your main garden. They will survive winter in the ground and in fact need the cold to perform at their best. It’s best to plant out your bulbs reasonably quickly after purchase but if you do need to store them for a while make sure it’s in a cool place. You can pop them into a container and refrigerate them for up to 8-10 weeks.

Step one is to make sure that you know where you want to plant the bulbs. Think about how they may look when they finally emerge. Do you want uniform colour? Do you want a more informal arrangement? Next you need to prepare the soil. It should be loose and well-drained for your bulbs to perform their best. It’s a good idea to mix in some organic material like compost or peat moss. In fact you can purchases special bulb fertiliser if you’re not sure what you’re doing and at least this way you maximise the chances of getting the right mix, if you’re not overly experienced. Now, planting depth is important. Check the packet if you’re not sure and this will tell you what you need to do. Be aware that planting bulbs at the correct depth helps them start to grow at the right time. As a rule of thumb you plant two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall, but check the package instructions for confirmation. Planting too deep will produce late blooms or no blooms at all. Shallow planting can subject tender, new growth to late-season cold weather. Get your hole ready and pop in the bulb nose up (or roots down). Cover it over with soil and then add a small-mesh hardware cloth if you are concerned that small animals may appear to dig up your investment! Take out your trusty watering can and give those bulbs a good drink. This is where patience is a virtue. Your excitement needs to be held back a little until the sun starts to shine and you see the first little shoots appearing. There really isn’t a better feeling. Annie Gardner 17

Recipe of the month The perfect recipe for Bonfire Night. This super tasty chilli is made from store cupboard ingredients and can be chucked in to the slow cooker so it is waiting for you after a chilli night out watching the fireworks. Ingredients: 1 large red onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 500g lean beef mince 2 green chillies, thinly sliced 3 tsp ground cumin 1 ½ tsp ground coriander 1 ½ tsp paprika Pinch cayenne pepper 1 green & 1 yellow pepper, chopped 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée 300ml beef stock 400g tin red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 198g tin sweetcorn in water, drained

Slow Cooked Bonfire Night Chilli Method: You can sauté the onions and garlic in a little olive oil and brown the mince before adding to the slow cooker, if you like. Or if you are a little tight for time you can literally just add all the ingredients to the slow cooker, give it a good mix and pop the lid on. Cook on low for 6-7 hours and serve with jacket potatoes, rice or simply in a bowl. Top with cheese, sour cream and/or chopped coriander. Double the quantities to make enough for everyone or save some and freeze for another chilli evening.

Keep on Running

Keep on Running Another month closer to the man in the red suit and summer is definitely a distant memory. It gave us one last ‘hurrah’ however, with a beautiful morning for the second Gosport Golden Beer Mile. This year, we tweaked the format so that instead of individual efforts, there were teams of four. Each team was made up of two men

and two ladies and each runner had to down a whole pint before running the length of Gosport’s Golden Mile. Last year we had solo runners drinking a half pint before every mile and they ran for four miles, this time it was only 1 pint before running and you only had to run 1 mile. Easy right? Well it was certainly entertaining! It defiantly provided a talking point for any locals enjoying their Sunday morning constitutional. We are blessed in Gosport to have our very own microbrewery ‘Fallen Acorn Brewers’, located in Mumby Road. They brew a variety of fine ales and provide a base for our midweek 5K run. If you haven’t yet enjoyed the hospitality of their very friendly snug, you should pay them a visit. Staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about their produce and head brewer Ed ‘the brew’ Anderson will happily talk at length about what makes a great pint. As well as supplying the ale for the race, Fallen Acorn Brewers entered a team, as did our friends at Four Ale Tap Room - another fine and friendly establishment. The spoils this year however were won by Al’s All-stars who nailed that perfect combination of being able to consume a pint quickly AND sprint 1 mile without incident.

24

There was plenty of the good stuff left at the end for those who fancied a beer at 10.30am or for the racers to have another and actually taste it this time! All in all, another local success and another event to prove that running doesn’t always have to be taken too seriously. We have already started planning next year’s event with Fallen Acorn who have kindly agreed to supply the fine ale again. We will be limiting entries to 12 teams, so anyone interested should get their teams entered quickly to avoid disappointment. Entry costs just £7.50 per person and each runner will receive a memento. All profits will be donated to the nominated local charity of the year. If you would like to enter then please contact me on the details provided below. Remember, you don’t have to be quick to run with us. If you’re a nice person, we’d love you to join us any Wednesday evening from 5.30pm at Fallen Acorn Brewery or Sunday at the Bayside Cabin from 8am. All ages and abilities catered for and a warm welcome guaranteed. Until next time...#Followtheshoe We have something fun for you Article written by Nick Carter GosVegas Running & 545 RunClub email: cartscartergosvegas@gmail.com

Home Focus

It’s an American word but ‘fall’ is so much more descriptive for this time of year. It conjures up the leaves literally drifting off the trees, whistling around on pavements with beautiful accents of gold and green. The crispness of a sunny morning with mist rolling across fields and the freshness of the air makes this season particularly sumptuous and is something that we can easily replicate in our homes. We have talked before about using accessories to easily adjust the tone of a room and nowadays there are many gorgeous pieces that you can source, that don’t need to be expensive, which will allow you to create the look and feel that you desire. Cushions, candles, throws and pictures are all easy enough to come by now but also don’t be too led by ‘trends’. You don’t want to be replacing these things every season as this isn’t environmentally, or economically pleasing. Instead, think about the longevity of the piece before you purchase it

and consider what could be added to it over time. Ensure you have some neat storage solutions so that you can pop away what you’re not using and it’s easily accessible when you wish to mix your rooms up. Large plastic storage crates are useful for this - make sure you label them up so it’s clear what is inside. It’s a good idea to store things by season rather than category you don’t want to be rummaging through each of the boxes if you’ve split them, for example, into cushions and table decorations. Far better to keep them grouped if you can. So for this time of year, it’s all about textures. You’re moving away from the needs of summer and you’re wanting to create a warmer, cosier feel in your home. Knitted blankets neatly draped on the arm of a chair, soft rugs on the floor and unscented candles are perfect to create this atmosphere. Think about using warmer colours too. If you have a neutral backdrop in your room you can successfully switch out the colour scheme using

soft furnishings. Browns, burnt oranges and gold make a pleasing combination, but also think about using greys and blues. With the right tones you can create warmth with these as they are darker to the eye yet still incredibly stylish. Side lamps also provide more muted lighting - consider changing the shade to a darker colour so that when the lamp is switched on it diffuses a different type of light to a brighter shade that you might have used in summer. Add decorative trays to tables and shelves - you can neatly group special ornaments or frames and it makes it easier to clean too as you just need to lift the tray away instead of multiple pieces. There is so much you can do to be creative in your home and at this time of year you can really throw yourself into it as the likelihood is you’ll be spending more time indoors due to shorter, darker days!
