elcome summer, we have been waiting for you......

Month six and nearly half way through the year. What do we have to look forward to this month? Well for a start June contains the longest day of the year, which must mean it’s the official start of summer. Summer means strawberries and not just any strawberries but the delicious, super sweet British kind and what’s more you can pick them yourself! Holidays, barbecues, Pimm’s, fish suppers & ice creams on the beach, the list is endless! Adding to the list of outdoor summer activities for us this year is geocaching! Our friends introduced us to it and it’s a really fun way to enjoy some family time out and about. For those of you that don’t know what it is, turn to Mum’s the Word on page 12 to find out how to get involved! All these opportunities to get outdoors couldn’t have come soon enough. We are deep into the bathroom project I mentioned last month and what could have been a simple lick of paint and some new towels, has turned into new electric’s, re-plastering and a skylight since Simon got heavily involved! Only another 10 days to go….please get me out of here! Finally, did you know that June is also National Smile Month. What better reason do you need to pop a happy face on? Smiling has so many benefits. It lowers stress, improves your mood, makes you more approachable, boosts your immune system, it’s free and smiles are contagious! So, whatever you are doing this month make sure you do it with a smile, as Marilyn Monroe said, ‘A smile is the best make up a girl can wear’

Slimming World Helped Me Shrink in Size and Grow in Confidence Natasha from Gosport joined Slimming World in September 2017. 18 months later she is nearly 5 stone lighter, full of confidence and still manages to enjoy her favourite cake! ‘Before joining Slimming World I was very unhappy with the way I looked, I had no confidence at all and when I saw photos of myself it made me cry', says Natasha, 'I asked friends not to post pictures of me on social media and if they did I would untag myself. I originally joined Slimming World to keep my house mate company. If I’m honest, this was my third or fourth attempt at a group and I wasn’t sure it was going to be a success’. After joining group this time Natasha felt inspired and managed to stick to the plan! However, a few months later, following a spell of illness, Natasha had found herself slipping back into bad habits. Wanting some new motivation, she decided to move to the 9am group at Thorngate Hall, where Dawn was her consultant.

‘Dawn really inspired and encouraged me. I can’t thank her enough for her constant support as without this I am sure I would have given up!’ Previously Natasha wasn’t interested in cooking and made meals from jars or packets. She now has a new found love for fruit and vegetables and enjoys cooking new things to try. Her eating habits have changed and instead of binging on one unhealthy meal a day she enjoys 3 decent meals and some tasty snacks. ‘I find planning essential’, says Natasha, ‘when I plan, I stay on track and find I’m never hungry!’ The biggest difference to Natasha is her confidence and energy levels. Natural energy! She has even noticed a difference in her skin which she is sure is down to a much healthier diet and lifestyle. Dawn holds groups on a Monday evening at the Alverbank Hotel (3.30p, 5.30pm and 7.30pm) and on Tuesdays at Thorngate Hall in Gosport (9am, 11am and 1pm).

But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support and encouragement I received was incredible.” Dawn has dropped six clothes sizes which has led to many life changing moments and exciting milestones. “I now have the energy to keep up with my children and their energetic games, I enjoy exercising on a regular basis and I remember getting the best feeling when I was confident enough to wear a swimsuit on holiday for the first time ever. I felt on top of the world!”

Looking for some fun groups to try with the little ones? Here are this months suggestions...

My Month as a Mum In the last month I have discovered another great activity that you can do with the family. It’s perfect for the summer time, so I just had to share it with you. Have you heard of geocaching? I hadn’t, but when our close friends suggested it and explained what it was all about, I couldn’t wait to try it with the children. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt game using GPS-enabled devices. Basically, you navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at the location. There are millions of these hidden all over the world and 4,327 in Gosport alone!! There might be one near you right now. Sometimes they are hard to find, you may need to hunt in bushes or up trees but if you persevere it is worth it. The children (and adults) got so excited when we located them! To get started just download the geocaching app and create a free account.

St Mary’s Church

Your Prayer Makes a Difference... We’ve entered a season for elections. The recent local elections which are held across the UK and the unexpected European election. Brexit continues to dominate and we’re mindful of the needs for Stormont to reach a political consensus for the future of Northern Ireland. On top of this we’re called to confront the challenges facing our amazing planet through all the uncertain changes it is experiencing. Therefore, it is timely that a period has already been set apart by a call from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to make it a ‘Season of Prayer’, for the nation and indeed, the world. Like last year, we are invited to join in the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ National Week of Prayer between 30th May and 9th June.

It seems that most of us in society pray at different times. We can offer our prayers to God not only by the traditions with which we are familiar and comfortable but in many different ways. God hears all our prayer, and your prayer does make a difference. The Archbishops campaign called ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ is now global and you can read all about it at www.thykingdomcom.global. So, whether you find yourself at home, walking the streets, along the bay, in the parks or indeed in a church - let us pray! This year folk from Alverstoke will be joining thousands of others at Portchester Castle to pray and to play! The Bishop of Portsmouth has invited people from across Portsmouth Diocese to gather for a special ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ event at Pentecost, on Sunday 9th June 2019. A special open air and ecumenical ‘beacon’ of prayer and celebration: 1pm - 2.30pm - ‘The Big Prayer Picnic’ with fun for families and a variety of prayer tents to visit. 2.30pm - 4pm - The Prayer & Worship Event. Drawing us all together as one.

16

Bring a picnic, enjoy the castle and come to some or all of this significant big day out for people across Portsmouth and the surrounding area. If you can’t get to the castle, then alternatively you can visit St Mary’s in Alverstoke. St Mary’s is open each day for you to enjoy the stillness and reflect in prayer. Let us use this season to pray for our nation and our world. If prayer is a feature of your life, please be encouraged to join in this national call of prayer and ask ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ because the

attributes of God’s kingdom are justice, mercy, reconciliation, grace, hope, peace and love. What better things could we seek for our nation and our world in this season of unexpected election and change? Home Focus

HOME FOCUS Dressed up to the nines Styling up our homes has never been such a big part of our lives in recent times so it makes sense to look at how we display one of our most often used items - our clothes. We used to relegate them to a standard double wardrobe and hope that everything would fit with a shove and a squeeze, and then the surplus would have to be stowed in the under-bed drawers. But now, with such an array of affordable, and flexible, storage options open to us, anything is possible. Creating a beautiful dressing area shouldn’t be too difficult if you plan it beforehand. Have a look at what clothes, bags, shoes and boots need to be put away. Consider which ones you’d like to display. After all, if you have any investment pieces such as designer handbags or purses, it makes sense to use them as room décor as well. If you have loft space, rotate your pieces by season and vacuum pack what you don’t need. This should save a good deal on space required, allowing the clothes on hangers and in drawers room to fall and sit nicely.

If your children have flown the nest, or you are lucky enough to have a spare room, consider turning it into a dedicated dressing room. You don’t need to pack everything into a master bedroom and it’s far nicer having your clothes and cosmetic products laid out so that you can easily see what you have. It makes getting ready in the mornings a quicker, and more pleasurable experience, as well as using the space in your home more economically. After all, a dressing room will get used at least once a day. A spare room, on average, gets used a couple of times a year.

But think about what you want to hang before you purchase. Wooden ones take up more space but are generally long lasting and cope well with heavier items such as jeans or suits. Velvet covered metal ones are light weight and a good option for hanging items which have a tendency to slip off. Plastic ones can be colourful but perhaps it’s better to look for alternatives to reduce our dependency on this material? If you decide to go for a ‘store’ look in your dressing room, you will probably opt to have door-less cupboards. Only go for this if you know you can keep the contents inside tidy! Grouping your clothes together by type, and then by colour is a pleasing, and logical way to organise your collection and will also look neat in the room.

When you are planning your dressing room make sure to think through the aesthetics of the look you are going for. Simple, white units, whether they have doors on or not, create an illusion of more space and if you Making the most of any nooks and crannies is want to add to the units over time then it’s also handy when storing shoes and bags— easier to do this, particularly from stores such you can fit a few smaller items into corners as Ikea. where normal furniture perhaps wouldn’t fit. Treat yourself to some new hangers. A set of Consider using a stylish travel case to hold bikinis etc that can sit in the corner as a piece matching ones looks far better than misof furniture and double up as a storage unit. matched wooden, metal and plastic ones.

NURTURING NATURE How to encourage wildlife into your

garden, and keep them there.

When there is an absence of nature, our souls will struggle and the land will feel like a sad place. But when the birds fly in, singing their happy songs, and the bees can pollinate the flowers, I guarantee you’ll start to find a connection that many of us have lost. A garden doesn’t just have to be about plants. It’s totally OK to grow a wilderness or cottage style garden if it suits you. Or a manicured, Italian style space can also work well. Whatever your choice, there are things you can do to make sure that you encourage ittle birds and animals into our open spaces once again. It’s not hard to do either. Remember that looking after a garden should be a journey. Every gardener worth his salt knows a garden is never finished and encouraging in wildlife is a similar thing. But with a few tweaks and additions, you can create a beautiful haven for our feathered and furry friends. If you build it, they really will come. So let’s get started. HEDGEHOG HOSTELS Sadly, hedgehogs are struggling with less than 1 million left now in the United Kingdom. But we can make a big difference to save these little animals. If you have neighbours then that’s where your efforts will be rewarded. Hedgehogs need to be able to roam far and wide in search of food, mates and nesting areas so if green spaces are linked together, hedgehogs can survive. They only need a 13cm square hole to get through, so create this between your fences to allow them a tunnel to go from garden to garden. Add log and leaf piles for them to hibernate in and

Occasionally we are asked why we, at GosVegas Running, don’t consider becoming an official running club. It’s easy to answer. Locally we are blessed with four fabulous running clubs right on our doorstep and each of these can meet most runner’s needs through their England Athletic affiliated status. Some of the benefits of these clubs include licenced Run Leaders and Coaches, discounts on race entries and ballot places available for races such as the wonderful London Marathon and many others. GosVegas Running began soon after Absolute Running opened their doors at Stoke Road back in 2012. It came about as an idea to give the local running community a hub. It would be somewhere people could meet other runners, share experiences in a social environment, find fitness classes and/or sports therapy and occasionally treat themselves to some new running shoes or accessories. The weekly after work on run a Wednesday became the 545 Run Club and the long Sunday social run became The Breakfast Club. These continued when Absolute Running closed their doors in 2017 and rebranded as Alton Sports. The 545 Run Club and The Breakfast Club offer a no pressure introduction to anyone who may be thinking of taking up running. Whilst we have qualified coaches amongst us, we do not coach or time your runs but offer support and friendship in a safe and friendly environment, (egos are left at the door!). A great number of our runners belong to affiliated clubs but choose to join one of our free weekly runs when they can fit it into their schedule. Often, the inexperienced runners will see the ‘normal’ club runners and be inspired to join a club themselves. In those early days, Absolute Running comprised a small team of Mum, Dad and Son (the real runner). Since becoming GosVegas Running, the ‘real runner’ has joined the Royal Navy and is 24

working for a living. Mum and Dad have day jobs but also belong to ‘Team Yellow’ otherwise known as Gosport Road Runners (GRR). GRR meet twice weekly at Gosport and Fareham Rugby Club. The running club forms the nucleus of our article this month, as having recently been involved in raising and distributing funds to local charities, I felt compelled to let a wider audience know how much good our club (and others) do for their community. Every November Gosport Road Runners organise and manage the Gosport Half Marathon which is respected by runners and considered to be a well organised, friendly and value for money event. There are not many races of this size and reputation that give so much for so little (less than £20 to enter) but what perhaps people don’t realise is how much of that entry fee goes to good causes. I certainly didn’t and I’ve been a club member for over 10 years!

Club members are invited to bid on behalf of local causes and charities who they believe will benefit from some financial assistance. These bids are considered by the Half Marathon Race Committee and the lucky recipients are invited to a presentation evening at the Rugby Club. I requested funds for our landlords at the Rugby Club who, like Gosport Road Runners, do a lot more for their community than some might think. They needed funds for an ID card laminator so that parents could see, at a glance, the credentials of those coaching their youngsters. The request was approved and I attended the recent presentation evening where the Lady Mayor, Diane Furlong, was guest of honour and also a recipient on behalf of her sponsored charity. What a fabulous evening. Race Director Dave Kitching opened proceedings with, ‘We are Gosport Road Runners. We run a lot. We run for fun, fitness and friendship. We run 5K and we run Marathons at home and abroad’, a perfect summary.

We were entertained by local operatic songstress Jennifer Parker - Lummis (also a Gosport Road Runner) and 4 young dancers who will be representing their country in a forthcoming dance World Championships. They blew everyone’s socks off with the quality of their dancing and passion and we all hope that they enjoy the World Championships whatever the outcome. They certainly found many new admirers on the evening and the club were delighted to know that we could help them with their kit and travel arrangements. Keep an eye out for Timestep Academy of Dance and in particular, Louis, Dior, Lottie and Hannah.

evening! How good is that? To everyone who enters the Gosport Half Marathon, a heartfelt ‘thanks’. Not only did you enjoy a well organised run but you helped do this too. It doesn’t matter who you run with or even if you prefer to run solo. As someone said to me the other Sunday while we were running with The Breakfast Club along Gosport’s Golden Mile...’isn’t the running community great?’ It certainly brings people together. So if you have been inspired by the sporting achievements of others and think that this may be your time to get involved, either pop into Alton Sports Gosport and speak to me or check out your local running club websites for information on how you can take those first steps.
