otivation is what gets you started… Habit is what keeps you going” said Jim Ryun, an American Athlete.

It got me thinking that many of us who have set our goals and wishes at the beginning of the year may be finding that now the summer is upon us, and willpower is lowering as we think of slipping into Autumn, that those things we fervently set out to achieve in January may be sliding from our grasp. And perhaps the reason is that we either weren’t committed to doing what we decided all those months ago, or we didn’t get into the HABIT of making that thing happen. Indeed a decision we made last year as a couple was to incorporate a fresh juice into our diet, at least once daily. We enjoyed blending fresh kale from the garden, including thick broccoli stems which would ordinarily end up on the compost, various fruit and other vegetables and chucking in copious amounts of ginger which sent Sean's hayfever packing (an unexpected, but very welcome result!). With the cleaning of the blenders and juicers, and the extra bit of organisation needed to make these each day it would have been easy to stop eventually. But once it became a habit it’s tough to break. So even when we have days out we make sure that we get our juice and do you know, if you look out for them there are juice bars popping up everywhere. So we grabbed one recently in Hyde Park at a festival, in a little street in Ibiza on a holiday and even the kids join in now, despite what can seem a very dubious mix sometimes! If there’s something you want to do, or your resolve has slipped, get started again and we’ll hear no more excuses! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

Nave Contemplation Last Wednesday, 1st July, I celebrated 25 years as a priest, along with 250 other people, in Holy Trinity, Gosport, one of the two churches (with Christ Church, Gosport) where I am presently working. Graham Hewitt, and Honorary Freeman of Gosport and former mayor, who has known me since my earliest days as a clergyman, wrote the following about this memorable day for me:

of Gosport. “Andy was a superb Mayor’s Chaplain to myself, Councillor Richard Dickson, Councillor Keith Gill and Councillor Wayne Ronayne and took part in all the important events in the Town”. During the last twenty five years Father Davis has held a number of positions in the Portsmouth Diocese. Following his curacy at St. Mary’s Alverstoke, he became Curate-inCharge at St. Francis, Hilsea and then Chaplain to the then Bishop of Portsmouth Doctor Kenneth Stevenson. He was then appointed Rector of St Peter’s Church, Bishop’s Waltham before becoming Vicar of Christ Church and Holy Trinity. Until last month he was also Area Dean of Gosport.

The Revd Andy Davis, Vicar of Christ Church and Holy Trinity, Gosport and Area Dean of the Church of England’s “Deanery of Gosport” andy@christchurchgosport.co.uk or andy@holytrinitygosport.co.uk

“A priest who began his ministry in Gosport 25 years ago celebrated his Silver Anniversary at a special service and reception at Holy Trinity Church,Gosport. Father Andy Davis welcomed the guests of honour, Bishop Timothy Bavin who conducted his ordination 25 years ago to the day; and the former Rector of Alverstoke, Canon Norman Bishop Timothy was enthusiastically Chatfield who supervised Andy’s welcomed by many who remember work and training in his first him affectionately as a popular and appointment. loved Bishop. Canon Chatfield paid tribute to Andy’s varied work and care of sections of the community particularly the young and elderly. The service was conducted by Father Andy assisted by the Venerable Gavin Collins, Archdeacon of the Meon, Canon Jeffrey Bell (who helped train Andy) and Philip Hopgood, Lay Deacon of Holy Trinity. Father Andy’s wife, Chris, and his 88 year old dad both gave readings. Former Mayor, Councillor John Beavis said that Father Davis had played an important part in the civic life

Auto biographies Naturally, the Mitsubishi keeps its go-anywhere, selfassured and powerfully built presence. This is characterised by its short front overhang, upright windscreen, strong high flanks, flared wheel-arches and rear-mounted spare wheel. It’s all child’s play

By Sue Gascoyne

Get set! Ready for the school run After a 6 month break from moving anywhere far or fast, I’ve recently discovered the joys of walking to school. Recovering from a ruptured calf injury, I’ve had to learn how to walk again and by that I mean walk properly, without compensating with other parts of the body!

have been set free on a journey of discovery, and what a time of year for that adventure. With blossom floating on the breeze scenting the air in wafts of perfume, a visual spectacle of colours and birdsong to warm the heart, that journey to school is fast becoming an opportunity to reawaken the senses.

that helping children to forge links with nature from a young age sets them up for healthier and more fulfilling lives in the future, by developing an attachment with Mother Nature herself.

With adequate time, a constant challenge in our house, children My aim has been to quit the can enjoy the luxury of tracing rather ungainly speed walking For children ‘nature is sheer the silvery line of a snail, weaving stature that I’d acquired, from sensory experience’ (Cobb,1977), their way through trees, carefully rotating the hips instead of and after being cooped up inside balancing along a wall, spinning breathing and walking from the or in the bubble-like cocoon of a core. In fact I’ve been struck by car, that precious time is an this opportunity to re-experience opportunity to breathe deeply what it is like to do something and marvel about all that’s good that we take for granted in in the world. children, walking. That means having to think about and look at With so much of children’s lives a every step, just to make sure that constant rush from one club to your foot is where it should be. another, the precious walk to school marks a gradual transition Discovering the wonders of between home and school/work. proprioception first hand (awful An opportunity to ponder, name but basically means recharge batteries and prepare understanding where our bodies mentally for the day ahead. round lampposts and pausing to pick up treasures or special stones, as children are prone to do. This could be a time for running, cycling or scooting on a scooter, what better way to feel the wind on your cheeks and rush of energy and measured fear that children need to experience? Judging by the number of parents seen sporting scooters on their shoulders returning from school my children are not the only ones who’ve got the scooter bug. We know that adults tend to overestimate the boisterousness of children’s play, thinking they’re far more active than they

really are. I guess this is a result of our increasingly sedentary lifestyle? So a healthy breakfast, followed by the school run are great ways for setting children up not just for the day, but life generally. Finally let us now forget the value of this precious time for talking with our children, and I do mean with rather than to! Research shows a proven link between the number and range of words used by a mother with their child, and their child’s success in later life, so any opportunities for conversations should be welcomed with open arms.

The secret of course lies in children knowing that their views will be valued and listened to as well as having something to talk about like that silvery snail trail, unusual stone, funny shaped cloud or car zooming past on the school run. Dahlia

August can often be dire for gardens, with dry soil and a natural lull between the summer and autumn flowering plants. But there are a few little garden life savers, such as the Dahlia which are relatively drought-tolerant that will give your senses the splash of colour needed as you move through to the next season. You’ll need to regularly dead-head to maintain the best blooms but it’ll be worth the time taken to maintain them. Make sure you don’t overfeed with high nitrogen fertilisers and do try to put them in a good sunny spot for direct light.

Remarkable Relationships Jessica McGregor Johnson is an international speaker, guide & mentor and author of “The Right T-Shirt, Write Your Own Rules and Live the Life You Want”. She helps people who are at a crossroads in their life discover themselves anew and identify the kind of person they want to be whilst living the life they chose.

Relationships and money. Oil and water? Money can be a key problem of communication in relationships. It brings to mind the problem of oil and water – they simply do not mix. However you can shake them up and the oil will be held in suspension - which is a way of mixing the two together. Equally you can mix relationships and money – you just need a particular way to do it. Six key points to remember:

28

1. Make decisions ahead of time. This may sound like a no brainer but for many the opportunity to have ‘that’ conversation passes and then neither want to bring it up so it goes unmentioned until you hit a problem. Better to have the conversation before you get to that point.

and honestly is the magic ingredient here. If one side has a strong opinion and does not listen to the other then further down the road you will find resentment creeping in.

I have had both in my current relationship – in the beginning we had joint money but when we started to have our businesses in 2. Make the decision – joint or different countries we split it up. separate money. This is a key question and one to be discussed It was only then that I realised openly and honestly. And openly what a stress having joint money

was. It wasn’t that either of us were spendthrifts – we weren’t. But we did have different priorities. By being individually responsible for our money it made it easier. This was not about both earning equally – we have and do subsidise each other. But once that money is in our individual accounts it is our responsibility how it is used. 3. Have a joint account for joint expenses. This makes life so much easier – especially if you do not agree totally with each other how money is used. By having a separate account for joint expenses that is paid into by both parties, if both are earning, you both know that the ‘survival’ level of money is taken care of. The amounts you pay in may be equal or may be pro rata depending on the level of earnings. It is an agreement between you both.

arguments. This is also true for credit cards. Talk about how you want to manage credit cards – do you want them paid back at the end of each month or are you both ok with having a certain balance on your cards? If you are ok with a balance on your credit cards, how much? At what monetary level does a purchase need to be discussed beforehand? This will help you build trust around debt. 5. What kind of savings do you want to have? Firstly decide what saving you want to be doing. Is it just long term, as in pension, or do you want a fun savings account for those lovely holidays or new car? How are these accounts managed? If you have separate accounts are your savings separate too? Think about what you want to do with that money ahead of time.

6. Acknowledge that you may have different ideas about money. That does not make 4. Always talk about any debt you want to take on. Ensure that either one of you wrong but it is both of you are on the same important so that you can work page. By agreeing all debt up out the best way to work front, and who is responsible for together. I have seen in these paying it back, you avoid kinds of relationships that

individual accounts often work better. Have a joint account for joint expenses, an agreement how you manage the debt, the savings etc and then an agreement that with what’s left over it is up to the individual what they do with it. The saver may want to save the spender may want to spend – and that’s fine. Neither is right or wrong – it is up to the individual. We all have different ways of looking at things and money is a very emotive issue for many. By talking about things up front and honestly you stop a lot of grief before it can even get going. You can mix the oil and water of relationships and money and catalyst to do that is communication. Follow the key points above and you will be going a long way to getting rid of one of the most contentious part of relationships And – you get to live even more happily together.
