… you have to go to them sometimes” said Winnie the Pooh. So that’s just what we did! We’ve been happily publishing in lots of our local areas for over 10 years and now we’ve revved things up a bit so that we can share our lovely bigazines with the residents and businesses in Warsash and Sarisbury Green. You’ll find a great selection of local trades who truly want to serve their villages - after all, you’d rather support someone who is local as much as you can wouldn’t you? Our raison d’etre is on the front cover - live local, shop local, be local. There are puzzles, car reviews, relationship musings and all sorts of articles to keep you busy until we pop the next monthly issue through your letterbox. A quick bit about us. We’ve lived in this area for most of our lives. We’ve had homes in Whiteley, Warsash, Hill Head, Stubbington, Alverstoke and more recently just between Gosport and Lee on Solent. Could we pick the best place? Not really - each area has its good and bad bits. But they’re all near the water. Which is perfect. What makes our life fabulous is always being excited about our world whether it’s work or our busy family life. With five sporty kids who keep us on our toes there’s never a dull moment in our house! Yet, despite never having enough hours in the day (probably like you), we pour our heart and soul into our Bigazines because as the folks from L’Oreal constantly say “you’re worth it”.

This beautiful garden at 2 Sampan Close, Warsash is much nearer the size plot that many of us have but has been lovingly nurtured over the last 20 years to turn it from a building site to the stunning mature garden that we see today. It has been opened by its enthusiastic owners , Amanda and Robert Bailey, for the first time this year via the NGS. 6

Remarkable Relationships Jessica offers Life Guidance, connecting back to your spirit, the true heart of you. If you want to know more you can visit her website http://www.jessicamcgregorjohnson.com

Trusting yourself to go for it Life is for living to the full and that means that in all areas of life you need to go for it! As we all know stretching out of your comfort zone can be both scary and exciting. And it should be! Any goal that is only exciting is too small and we will grow out it far too quickly. Any goal that is only scary is too big and we simply won’t go there. So the right kind of goal is the one that is both scary and exciting!

as many times as he could remember when he hit a challenge and what he did to overcome it. When he reported back the stress was all but gone from his face. He said that he had seen many times (and some he had forgotten about until he did this exercise) when he had indeed hit a challenge, and got himself through it successfully. Sticky situations where he had come up with a solution that until faced with the question he would So much for the theory, but what never had foreseen himself about the practise? When you finding. He saw just how are sitting in front of a big resourceful he was in the face of stretchy goal often one of the challenges. That information was challenges is “Can I trust myself enough for him to commit to to be able to handle this? Will I following his heart and trusting be able to handle the challenges himself that he would take care inherent in this, and succeed?” of whatever arose. Of course there are no guarantees that any decision we take will work out as we want. It’s par for the course that we might hit obstacles. It is these challenges that help us grow as human beings, they are a necessary part of our life. However if we feel we can trust ourselves it is so much easier to take that first step. I recently asked a client to take a walk through his life and identify

8

Sure he went on to make a clear plan of how he would achieve his goal and what contingencies he wanted in place to move on with it. However, that process of seeing that he could trust himself to take care of not only himself, but his family too, was a key

ingredient in the process. Use your past to give you the confidence for the future. When you are faced with a moment when you need to trust yourself that you will make this work, take a moment to look back through your life and see just how resourceful you are. Notice all those challenges and how you overcome them. Also see how each of those challenges taught you something important about yourself or even helped you clarify the direction you wanted to go in. Life is too short not to live it to the full, no one gets to their death bed wishing they’d played it more safe – you learn to trust yourself by playing the game of life full out – so, go for it!

Naturally good.. Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans

Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice

I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour.

60ml chicken stock 1tbsp. reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries.

Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long. Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb chef - www.thefoodbible.com

Strawberry fields There’s nothing more lovely than going down to your local strawberry grower and spending an hour or so in the warm sunshine, running your hands through the straw and plucking plump and juicy fruits from the low lying plants. Commercial strawberry growing began in Titchfield and Locks Heath around the 1850s and is renowned for being one of the first areas to start the “Pick your own” service.

particularly mild winter in December 1818). The strawberry industry was once incredibly thriving which saw thousands of tonnes of fruit travelling off to London and around the country, being shipped by train from Swanwick. In 1931 it was reported that 1.7 million baskets of fruit left the station on what became known as the Strawberry Specials.

Sadly, in the Titchfield and Locks Heath area the producer numbers have decreased from around 80 to just four major growers. Facing competition from supermarkets these producers are super proud of their strawberries. They are succulent and bright, not dulled from refrigeration.

Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. E.g. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three (full piggyback list at www.mse.me/piggyback). So check which other providers piggyback on your existing network and see if they’re cheaper. Energy firms can't charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn't wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you're allowed to switch without penalty. Play the codeshare trick - where two airlines sell the same flight. Airlines don't shout that their partners often sell their flights too, sometimes for less. If you're going on popular long-haul routes this can be a way to save.

Auto biographies Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal.

The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premium-badge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford

The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors.

On the entertainment front, Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system boasts an eight-inch colour touch-screen to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using voice commands. For example, simply pushing the voice control button and saying “I’m hungry” will display a list of local restaurants, and the MICHELIN guide can help you choose where to eat. SYNC 2 will then connect you by phone to the restaurant to book a table and guide you there. Groovy, or what? So, this Ford Mondeo with its ‘common-as-muck badge’ is as good, if not better, than many of the eulogized German ‘premium’ cars. Go on – hop in one and try one out. WARSASH MEMORY CAFE For the last sixteen months a successful Memory Café has been running in Warsash. It is a free service provided by the owners of Home Instead Senior Care, a local home care company owned by Graeme Cann and Luisa Castle. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month from 2pm to 4pm at the United Reformed Church on Warsash Road and provides an informal setting where support and fellowship is available to people living with dementia and their carers.

It began when Luisa Castle came to realise that there was little provision for support for people who felt lonely and isolated with the disease and were trying to cope alone. It has become a calendar event in the lives of the regular visitors who enjoy the opportunity of taking part in activities, make friends over a cup of tea and homemade cakes. Recently Waitrose in Locks Heath supported the Café’s cause in their Community Matters project and due to an overwhelming public response raised £552 for the Café. This money will go towards arts and crafts and activities for the group. The Café wants to reach out to more people, who could benefit from an understanding environment and be themselves during their journey with dementia, including their relatives or carers. The group is diverse for all age groups and brings a sense of fun, solidarity and hope for many. If you care for someone with dementia, please call Home Instead on 01489 559007 to find out more.

Oliver’s Garden Oliver Taplin greets me with a cheeky grin as I say hello. This little boy from Warsash has complex conditions including Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy following a massive bleed on his brain when he was just 5 days old. He doesn't speak and he uses a wheelchair to get around and requires medical care 24 hours a day, but it does not take long to establish what Oliver would like for his 9th birthday in July - a new garden. Oliver is surrounded by a team of strong willed ladies and lots of love, there is Mum Rachel, Nanny Anne, his carer and his adorable and very switched on sister Jasmine aged 3. He also goes to the Rainbow Centre in Fareham three times a week where the conductors work with him to learn and develop. As Oliver watches his favourite cartoon, Postman Pat, the ladies tell me about their plans for Oliver's best ever birthday present. The garden is not huge and even though it contains a shed, a playhouse and a trampoline it is completely inaccessible to Oliver, firstly because the patio doors and garden are on different levels and secondly because there is just no way Oliver can get around the garden and there is nothing for him to play with or do. Rachel's plan seems simple -to raise enough money to have the garden 'made over' for Oliver, and the fundraising is well under way with nearly £2000 already in the fund and a number of events planned. Social media helps to keep up the momentum and she has received a number of offers of labour and materials. Rachel has received a fantastic news just this week: Andrew Smith proprietor of Meon Valley Aggregates and Hampshire Garden Materials has extensive knowledge of Landscaping and the industry. Andrew has kindly offered his time and experience to coordinate a group

30

of very experienced landscapers to build the garden. But there is still along way to go to achieve the target of ÂŁ6000 so this family still need lots of help from the local community. Oliver loves to grow things and enjoys planting vegetables and flowers so he needs some raised flower beds , he needs a pathway to enable him to move throughout the garden, he needs a play area with sensory toys for him and for Jasmine too so that they can share time together in the garden. Oliver loves to be outside but doesn't cope well with strong sunlight so a canopy or sail to provide shade would be ideal, a seating area for family time would be perfect and importantly new doors so that Oliver can move from the house to the garden with ease.

These include Raffles , a quiz night at the Heathfield Arms on 11th July ,an inline skating marathon, a very brave lady who will be running 100 miles across the South Downs and a Fund raising event with a plant sale, cupcakes, balloons at Whiteley Shopping Village on 5th July. If you are able to help with facepainting or entertainment for this event then please contact Rachel asap to enable her to make the most of this great opportunity.

Rachel would like to be in a position to give Oliver the news that the work can begin as a birthday present on the 27th July. If you would like to Please help Oliver achieve his dream help Oliver have the best birthdayand get out into the sunshine this summer . and if Rachel is honest there have been a number of occasions over the last couple of years when she didn't think Oliver would even have another birthday- then please contact Rachel at rachel_taplin@hotmail.co.uk or donate via gofundme.com/srref8 or support any of the events planned.
