Smalltalk September....
is always a busy month for us, one of the busiest of the year in fact! We have four family birthdays this month, so the pressure is always on to juggle celebrations and now I need to try and think of a way the children can have some form of party! Added to that, it’s also the month that the kids go back to school which is often a hard routine to get back into after the summer break. If you’re like me and you can barely even remember where the school is let alone what to prepare, you’ll be pleased to see our COVID-adapted ‘back to school’ checklist on page 12 to help you and your little one get ready for the first day back. August began to feel like life was starting to return to a form of normal. Despite having to wear masks, the opening of retail has been a nice distraction from all the time at home. Also, our children’s sports clubs reopened so it’s been great for their wellbeing to see their team mates again after four long months. The ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme has been a great encouragement to grab a bargain at a local independent restaurant. What I didn’t realise was what a treat it would be to have ‘someone else’ bring me my dinner for the first time in what seems like forever! Plenty of things for us to feel positive about! Despite these retailers, restaurants, kids’s clubs and beauticians reopening, we’re still loving hanging out at the beach, paddleboarding and swimming during the day and BBQ’ing and Prosecco’ing as the sun goes down. It looks like many others feel similar judging by the numbers of families we see doing the same (socially distanced of course). My personal wish is that we manage to retain this seaside vibe for as long as possible (Indian summer anyone?!?) and into 2021 too, we all deserve it!

Recipe of the month
Tarte Tatin I think of tarte tatin as grown-up toffee apples. For this recipe you will need a cast-iron pan. Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes, plus cooling time, plus 30 minutes in the oven. Serves: 6 Ingredients: 7-9 medium apples: Cox are my favourite for this, but other varieties work well, 200g white sugar 50g butter, 225g plain flour, 2 tbsp caster sugar, 120g cold diced butter, 1 medium egg (beaten) Method Peel, halve and core the apples, then place in the fridge, uncovered, for a few hours or overnight. It doesn’t matter if they turn a little brown, the idea is for them to dry out a little, so there’s less juice and less chance of soggy pastry. Place the sugar into a 20-24cm cast iron frying pan along with 50ml water and let the sugar soak up the water. Cook over a medium heat until it turns golden and fudgy. Try not to stir the sugar until it’s mostly liquid as it might recrystalise. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter, and a pinch of salt. Carefully arrange the apples in the pan, round-side down. Be careful as the caramel stays hot for a long time! Place it back on the heat and cook gently for 5 minutes. Then remove and allow to cool completely. Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl, add the diced butter and rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Add the beaten egg and combine into a dough. Add a little water if required but keep the dough fairly dry. Wrap it in clingfilm and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Roll out the pastry to about 5mm / ¼ inch thick and cut out a circle slightly larger than your pan. Place the pastry on top of the pan and tuck the edges around the fruit. If your pan has a detachable wooden handle, now is the time to detach it! Bake for about 30 minutes until the pastry is golden, then remove from the oven. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then place a plate which should be slightly larger than the pan, on top and carefully invert the tart on to the plate. Serve warm with crème fraiche, natural yoghurt, or vanilla ice cream.

Back to School
Any other year I would be talking about how the new school year is creeping up on us and how time flies when you are having fun, this time life is different, and going back to school is going to feel even more strange than normal. Home schooling and holidays have slowly merged into one and the return to school this year will be like no other. I can barely remember the start time of school or the morning routine, let alone the juggle of activities and clubs after! Below you will find the yearly checklist to help you avoid those last minute panics and remind you what to get organised ready for the start of the new school year. I’ve done my best to adapt it to suit the current situation but I’m sure all schools will vary slightly so please make sure you also refer to the information sent to you directly from your child’s school.

Keep your home safe by having a ‘back-from-school’ routine Something else to consider as we send our children back to school is keeping our homes as clean as possible, this will include ‘disinfecting’ the kids when they get home. When children arrive home from school they should immediately wash their hands with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds. Many schools are advising that clothes are clean each day. Children should remove their ‘school clothes’ as soon as they get home ready to be washed. A shower would also be a great idea. I have featured these little gems before as they are my best ‘school’ find to date! Name labels that can not only be personalised by design but they can be used to stick on literally anything! I have used them on clothes, equipment, shoes and more…..they even survive the dishwasher!

A long and caring career… Claire is one of our longest serving care assistants here at Bluebird Care Gosport. She has been working for the company for nearly 8 years, which is something to be really proud of. She is such a fantastic asset to the team that we wanted to shout about her! Claire wanted to work in the care industry, having studied it at college in her younger years. After a few different jobs in retail and even one summer giving donkey rides to children in Weymouth, she took the plunge. After concentrating on her family for a number of years and her husband then shoreside in the Royal Navy, Claire decided to get out and pursue the career she had intended from such a young age. Looking in the Yellow Pages, she found a company offering home care and gave them a call. Not knowing exactly what care at home involved, she went for an interview and was successful. It was around 20 years ago that Claire first donned her care uniform and she has not looked back since! Working in home care is very much Claire’s preference as she says that she loves meeting new people and building relationships with them. Providing a oneto-one personal service is so important and having the time to build bonds makes it her career of choice. She fondly remembers early in her career, visiting a customer who was reluctant to have carers in to help. On her first visit, she asked if she could just come in and have a cup of tea with the gentleman. Sitting, having a chat and getting to know each other allowed him to build the much-needed trust in Claire
as his carer. Claire became one of his regular care assistants and was able to make a marked difference in promoting his independence. Claire loves hearing people’s stories and learning more about their younger days. It’s all too easy to forget that her customers were young once and have had families, careers and hobbies. Today Claire works with one customer who, as it turns out, she is distantly related to. This is something that she found out as a result of her great ability to build relationships. Claire says she loves working for Bluebird Care and she will stay in the industry for the rest of her career. She loves being a care assistant and doesn’t want to change this. It is great that Claire has worked for Bluebird Care for so long and is a real testament to our ethos of supporting our staff, enabling them to support others in the best possible way. Claire enjoys attending the coffee mornings we hold for customers and has been actively pursuing some of the extra qualifications we offer. We feel it is crucial to train our staff beyond what is required to help them to be a cut above the rest, ensuring peace of mind and security of our customers. We have no doubt that Claire will continue to have a long and successful career and improve the lives of all she comes into contact with.

a new start? September is a transitional month and one in which we say goodbye to summer and generally send our children back of to school, with shiny new shoes and high hopes for the year ahead. This year, though, feels so very different. With the global pandemic wreaking havoc on our everyday ‘normal’ it will be even more apparent, at the start of the new term, that our children will not be able to commence this chapter of their lives in the way that we have all done in the past. Without dwelling too much on our Year 11’s and A level students who could not complete their schooling, who by now will have received results that will have been predicted for them, it is the turn of the younger children to navigate their way through school now and do their best. The likelihood is that many of them may not have kept up with their work since schools closed and attention spans and confidence may be very much eroded by the time they officially ‘go back’. From my point of view we are lucky that we are home based for work. We have been able to support our children during the lockdown and subsequent closure of schools and ensure that they could continue their studies utilising online lessons where possible but also good old study books and pens and pencils (both of those things I’ve felt have disappeared for some years now from their school bags but that’s for another column). Admittedly a lot of their learning comes from a quick ‘google’ and having them in front of me more has made me realise their shocking ability to research which is crazy given the amount of resources they now have available. Anyway, I digress. I was interested to see an announcement by two local schools about their approach to the new future. Bay House and Brune Park are large schools with seven year groups and their logistical challenges for managing health and safety are considerable. Bringing thousands of people onto site at the start of term places a huge pressure on to any organisation and these schools, like many others, are
trying to navigate their way around guidelines. However, interestingly they recently stated that they were going to embrace a 21st century learning model going forward and would be expecting pupils to do more learning from home. It would seem that this caused alarm in many parents (and indeed I can no longer find the original reference to this) but instead they reassured families that staggered start and end times may be part of the solution. But it got me thinking that perhaps this is the ONLY sensible approach when the cause and treatment of the current virus is unknown. Take aside the fact that many parents have to work either in or out of the home environment, having pupils learning remotely could be the answer. We can all be sad about the lessened social interaction that our kids need so much, but until we are in a position to be sure that our children are not at risk or do not put others at risk perhaps this is the only plan? Indeed many pupils in Australia do this every day given that they live so far apart from each other that a virtual school is the only solution, and they get on with it because that has become their everyday life. Whatever arrangements are made, we can be sure that going back to ‘normal’ will not be one of them. We all have to change and embrace this as best as we can, whilst reassuring our future generations that we are doing everything we can to help them, socially, emotionally and academically. One thing’s for sure, there isn’t a perfect answer because we have all got used to a social model that no longer exists in the same way as it did a few months ago. I very much hope that we squeeze out of the ‘new’ one every bit of good that we can. And I thank my stars that I’m not in a position where I have to plan out the start of term for all of these schools when so much is in the air. Let’s rely on everyone doing their best with the knowledge that they have and pull together as a community when parents need support. It’s never easy but we’re better together. Crofton Parish
During August, we are beginning to re-open our churches - Holy Rood and St Edmund’s. It’s wonderful to be able to re-open, but as many of you will know, running any kind of business or organisation right now is very challenging and involves a lot of paperwork! Here’s a short summary of what re-opening means in Crofton Parish. St Edmund’s St Edmund’s will be re-opening for two Sundays during August, and then weekly from September for the Morning Service at 9.30am. We are delighted to be able to offer the beautiful building for Sunday services again but there will be a new set of restrictions. The capacity of St Edmund’s has been reduced to 22 ‘units’, that is, individuals, households or social bubbles. On Christmas Eve last year, we crammed over 250 people in! There will be a new one-way system in and out and you will be asked to give your details when you arrive in case NHS Track & Trace need to get in touch with you. Holy Rood Holy Rood is restarting our Midweek Service on Thursday 6th August at 10am. This service will be for those who can’t join in with Church ‘online’ or who are older and/or at risk of isolation and loneliness. The service will be in Holy Rood Church and will offer a valuable space for people to gather safely to pray and be together. Sundays at Holy Rood will continue to be online only for now. You can join in on the Holy Rood Facebook page or via the Crofton parish website. Is it safe to come back to Church? As you may know, churches are higher-risk environments for viral spread, which is why we are

being so cautious about re-opening. We are doing all we can to minimise the risk, including social distancing on-site, shorter services and no singing. I have made a short video introducing the changes. It’s called ‘What’s Next? Video 3’ and you can find it on the Crofton Parish YouTube channel if you would like to know more. If you are planning to come to Holy Rood for any event, watching the video beforehand will certainly help. As capacity will be significantly reduced, please be understanding if we can’t fit everyone in. If you are turned away from one service, we will ensure you have a reserved seat next time! Other Activities A few other activities will be resuming in August. We are having our first-ever ‘Virtual Holiday Club’ Wonder Zone - from 17th – 21st August for children going into years 3-6. Do check out the Holy Rood Facebook page for more details. There will also be our first ‘Young at Heart’ event postlockdown. These special events are for seniors and provide valuable opportunities for community and fun together. Do get in touch with the Parish Office if you’d like to find out more. 2020 has been the strangest year most of us can remember and it may be that there is more difficulty ahead. Keep on running
The charity 10k results are in..... Is this the ‘new normal?’ Are we forevermore to be expected to socially distance and be just that little bit more patient as we wait to be served? It’s all a bit odd isn’t it but we’re adapting pretty well really. Our 545 RunClub on a Wednesday has recommenced, albeit with a few tweaks and we are once again able to meet at Fallen Acorn Brewers in Mumby Road. Not quite as cosy as we once were but still able to enjoy a refreshing ale in good company post run. It’s definitely nice to be able to join our mates in the flesh even if we aren’t as tactile as we once were. July has saw 100 runners from our local running clubs and unaffiliated runners take on our charity 10K which is a fundraiser for a chosen local organisation. Usually, this would be a race that takes place over a bank holiday in May but with the COVID restrictions, a mass participation event really wasn’t possible. So it became a ‘virtual’ race with each runner paying £5 to enter and having the whole of July in which to record their run. Local businesses contributed prizes for the winning male and female with the odd spot prize thrown in too. With just a few days to go, we saw local triathlete Simon Hearnden leading the men’s event with a time of just over 40 minutes but being the mentor and

gentleman he is, Simon agreed to pace young Ben Jarvis of Gosport Road Runners around the course. This saw the winning time drop to an impressive 38 minutes and 9 seconds! What a great time. The ladies ‘race’ was won by Gosport Road Runner Amy Spencer-Smalley in a terrific 47 minutes and 44 seconds. In truth, we are all winners as our chosen charity, Leesland School and their swimming pool are set to receive in excess of £2,000 which will help with essential maintenance and running costs. I know that like many others, my granddaughter can’t wait to get back to her lessons there. The money was raised through race entry fees, an auction of a locally produced and critically acclaimed piece of artwork depicting the Great South Run, a donation of £300 from the CO-OP Funeralcare community fund and a further £500 from Lloyds Bank. The Charity Bucket was also swollen by the proceeds of our 545 RunClub T shirts and vests. What a fabulous sum and founder of the Aqua Academy, Caroline Maculloch can be seen grinning in one of the newly refurbished changing rooms. Another star of the show was Leo Millar aged just 4. His Dad Danny won this race in 2019 but as injury prevented him from participating this year, Danny

helped Leo to complete the 6 Mile course in a time of just over 4 hours! Danny says ‘never again’ but we’re confident of persuading Leo to refine his approach and come back next year fitter, stronger and faster. To celebrate Leo’s performance this year, Adrian Chalk (proprietor) of Bayside Cabin, donated a big, fat, whippy ice cream by way of a ‘well done.’ This is on top of the meal for two was also donated to the winning female, Amy. Our friends at 33 Green Bottles in North Cross Street donated a specially distilled gin to the winner of the men’s race along with a few other spot prizes, whilst local running lifestyle brand RUNR donated one of their special technical baseball caps. We are extremely proud of the running community and their involvement in the fundraising. The quest starts now to find our next local charity to support and a shortlist will be drawn up early in August for 545 and Breakfast Club members to vote on. Will you take part in next year’s event?
