If you read last months ‘Small Talk’ you may remember that I (perhaps stupidly) committed to my New Year’s ‘running’ resolution in front of you all. Resolutions are normally a distant memory for me by February but I’m very proud to say that in the last month, despite not getting out as much as I would have liked, I have doubled my distance and completed my first 10k!! My friend and I have now recruited a few more lovely ladies to join us and have decided on an interim target of completing the ‘Pretty Mudder 5k’ (for Cancer Research) in July followed by the Great South Run (10 miles) in October. Our fundraising page is called ‘Team Prosecco’, it’s a great cause and if you’d like to sponsor us, please look us up on Just Giving or perhaps give us a wave of encouragement if you see us out and about. There’s a whole host of other fantastic local running events taking place on our doorstep that are suited to all ages and abilities. Read about them in the ‘Keep on Running’ article on page 24, I might just see you there. So, what’s going on in March? I love March because it brings the first day of Spring (bring on the warmer days and lighter evenings), it’s Mother’s Day but more importantly it’s my Birthday! Sounds like a month of celebration to me! March is also the home of World Book Day. In a world of ever growing technology, I believe books are so important. I read a quote: ‘If you read just one book a day to your child, they will have read 1825 books by their 5th Birthday. Every book counts.’ It’s not always possible but I try my best to read to my children every day. Check out ‘Mum’s the Word’ on page 12, the Gosport Discovery Centre are holding some great events to celebrate World Book Day and you can borrow some new books while you are there! Whether you’re running or reading, have a great month.

Thursday 5th March World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading! Sharing stories with your child is so important because it helps them develop in so many ways. It engages their imagination, teaches them about language and emotions and promotes brain development as well as social & communication skills. Try and share a book every day with your child, even if its a poem or picture book. Children will learn the right way to hold a book and turn the pages. It’s also a great way to spend some quality time together. Many local schools and libraries will be holding events to celebrate World Book Day, here are a few great events that the Gosport Discovery Centre are hosting this March.

After School Dr Seuss Session | Monday 2 March 3.30-4.30pm Fun, games and stories from the well known books by Dr Seuss. For ages 3+ accompanied by and adult. 50p a ticket, please book in advance. For ages 3-10 accompanied by an adult. 50p per ticket, please book in advance. To book your place or for further information please contact the Gosport Discovery Centre on 02392 523463

I love World Book Day and I don’t think you can beat a home-made costume, they don’t have to cost the earth and you may have lots of bits already. Here is my little one a couple of years ago as Mary Poppins, I’d love to see your creations! If you’d like to be featured in the magazine please email me on: editor@bigvoicedirectories.co.uk 13

Crofton Parish

‘YOUNG AT HEART’ INITIATIVES GATHER MOMENTUM You may remember me from the August 2019 edition of the Big Voice. I introduced myself as the new Seniors Community Development Worker for Crofton Parish, a voluntary role, which I have taken on after a career in health and social care. With an ever-growing and aging population, especially here in Stubbington, we hope to be able to offer support and pastoral care to those in our community who may sense a loss of identity or who feel isolated, those who struggle with issues of failing health or those who have been bereaved. Indeed, you may be someone who identifies with all the above experiences. It is important that everyone feels a sense of value and the relationship between physical fitness, mental health and spiritual well-being has long been acknowledged.

There has been other important developments since August. We have started the early explorations into setting up a ‘Men’s Shed’, along similar lines to others in the area and have been helping Crofton Parish to become a dementia-friendly church. We also have a regular monthly bereavement support group ‘Cup of Tea and Company’, which meets from 2pm to 3:30pm in the Parish Centre on the second Tuesday of the month and a weekly coffee morning on Wednesdays at 9:45am in the Oak Room. On the first Wednesday of each month this is followed by a short service led by one of the team. As you can see, there is a lot going on in Crofton Parish and plenty of opportunities to be involved, so why not come along and perhaps bring a friend or neighbour?

Since those early but tentative beginnings in the summer, we have launched a number of projects under the Young at Heart banner, starting in August with a wonderful cream tea in the Parish Centre. Attended by around 45 people, we enjoyed watching the film, Calamity Jane. We have since held another cream tea and film afternoon in October and ended the year with a festive gathering for around 70 people, where we watched White Christmas. The event was a great success and guests enjoyed carol singing, delicious sandwiches (from the local village bakery) followed by Christmas cake, Yule log and mince pies, all washed down with tea, coffee and prosecco! It was a memorable occasion and a fantastic launch to the Christmas season.

If you have any questions or suggestions or would simply like to find our more, then do get in touch with me at Jenny@croftonparish.org.uk or visit our parish website www.croftonparish.org.uk

The response to these Young at Heart events has been amazing! One couple commented, ‘We really enjoyed the film. It is so good to meet new people.’ Another person said, ‘I really enjoy coming here and watching a film. This is lovely... When’s the next one?’, whilst one lady confessed that the film and cream tea was the highlight of her week. 20

Diary dates for this coming year: 21st February, 12:30pm-3pm: Cream tea and film 17th April, 2pm-4pm: Fun afternoon 29th May, 1pm-4pm: Cream tea and film 14th & 15th July 12:30pm - 3:30pm: Summer Festival event with a seaside theme 4th September, 1pm-4pm: Cream tea and film 30th October, 2pm-4pm: Fun afternoon 12th December, 12 noon - 3pm: Christmas – food, film and fun! Recipe of the month

Beef in Guinness with Herb Dumplings Prep time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 3 hours Serves: 4-6 Ingredients For the stew 2 tbsp oil, 1kg braising steak - cut into large pieces, 2 tbsp plain flour - well seasoned, 3 onions - sliced, 500ml Guinness, 2 sprigs thyme For the dumplings 75g butter - frozen and grated, or 75g suet, 150g self-raising flour, 1 small onion - grated, 2 sprigs of thyme - leaves stripped and chopped, Water for mixing Method Heat the oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Heat a little of the oil in a large oven-proof pan. Lightly flour the pieces of braising steak and fry in small batches until well browned. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate. Add the onions to the pan and fry on a fairly high heat until they soften and tinge brown at the edges. Pour the Guinness into the pan, letting it bubble up, then return the meat to the pan along with the thyme. Cover the pan and transfer to the oven for 2-2 1/2 hours or until tender. The sauce will sweeten and thicken during the cooking time. Make the dumplings (towards the end of the cooking time by mixing the grated butter or suet, flour, onion and thyme together and season well. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients until you have a soft dough. Divide into 12 balls. Place the dumplings on top of the casserole and return it to the oven, uncovered, for 25 minutes. Serve with shredded Savoy cabbage.

Keep on Running

Keep on Running How are the New Year, new decade challenges going? Still got the big picture in your sights? Social media is awash with feel good stories of tremendous or inspiring achievements and the year is still young. After last months’ article several people contacted me with enquiries about the open water swimming groups. Hopefully they are on their way to joining them if they haven’t already. If this was you, please let us know how you get on, with photos if possible. If running was your resolution perhaps it’s time to put some race dates in your diary. We all know how quickly a year can fly past so this month, it’s a shameless plug for local running races that may be of interest to all ages and abilities. The ‘Gosport 5K Summer Series’ starts on Tuesday 14th April 2020. This is a series of 5 evening races held on the second Tuesday of each month up until the finale in September. The races include a Junior 1K and a chipped timed 5K on our very own Stokes Bay. The junior 1K takes place at 7.15pm followed by the 5K race at 7.30pm. The series is well established in the race calendar and enjoys a reputation of being inclusive, friendly and well marshalled. Our event managers, ‘Nice Work’ ensure that fun is the name of the game and entry is open via their online race management portal at www.nice-work.org.uk. 24

In between those evening races we have the everpopular ‘Gosport Golden Mile’ race which includes the ‘Junior Golden Mile’ and boasts a course record of 4 minutes and 9 seconds, set by England Athletics athlete, Alex Teuten in 2018. This year we are hoping to have cash prizes for the winning man and woman with spot prizes for other runners. It’s a great morning to enjoy our fabulous beach and the perfect way to treat Dad as it falls on Sunday 21st June 2020, which is Father’s Day. Every finisher is guaranteed a medal which has space on the back for you to engrave your official mile time. How quickly can you run a mile? Let’s find out, shall we? Do you have a work or school running team that could take part? Or could your rugby or football club take up the challenge? Keep us posted with any interesting stories such as fund raising for your favourite charity. Once again, ‘Nice Work’ will manage the event and entry is now open. It’s only a mile... go on! Well, that’s our managed races covered. There will also be a Charity 10K to come in May but more about that at a later date. In the meantime, good luck with your personal challenges and keep us posted. Written by Nick Carter Email: cartscartergosvegas@gmail.com Absolute GosVegas 545 RunClub The Breakfast Club

Home Focus

Spruce up for Spring If you have arrived at a place in your home where you think that any semblance of ‘style’ has disappeared under piles of toys and welly boots, then you’re not alone. Many busy homeowners gradually watch their house disappearing under heaps of paraphernalia and then it all becomes too much to sort, so it becomes ’normal’. So with spring around the corner, perhaps it’s time to have a rethink about dealing with the clutter. Set aside a whole day to do nothing but clean and tidy. It might feel like a drag but once it’s done you’ll be thrilled to have done it—not only will everything look so much nicer but mentally you’ll feel happier for the declutter. Pick a day when the weather is nice and try to kick the rest of the household out for the day. It is much easier to get on with this without having small hands getting in the way, or having to keep stopping to feed the hoardes.

The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time and if your home has become a little bit like an enormous elephant in the room, the best way to tackle it is to do one bit at a time. Start with your kitchen. This is generally where much of the mess accumulates and preparing meals or even making a cup of tea can become an unpleasant chore. If your worksurfaces have disappeared under piles of paperwork, fret not. Choose one area onto which you are going to, literally, pile all the mess. If there are dishes to go away, put them where they belong, but if it’s ’odd bits and bobs’ then don’t stress about where they will go, yet. Just make that pile. Once you’ve done that you can then, at least, see what needs to be done. Clean down the rest of the countertops, wipe over the front of the cupboards. Buff the kettle, shine the sink and wipe down

behind the toaster, coffee canisters and anything that is to remain displayed on the counter. Get the rest put away. Have a think about where it all goes. Do you have to walk across the kitchen to get a mug to then put the kettle on? Can you put your mugs closer to the kettle? Do you really need all your condiments out on the worktop or can some go away in a cupboard so that you only leave out a nice salt and pepper mill? The more things that you can find a home for, the less will need cleaning next time round. Once you’re done with those jobs then go and tackle the pile. Pick up one thing at a time. If you don’t need it, get rid of it. Otherwise put it back where it should have been. It doesn’t hurt to have a basket or a drawer of ’bits’ if you really feel the need to have somewhere to chuck random stuff, but just promise yourself to clear it out regularly so you can still find things in there. Give the worktop a wipe where the pile of things once was, put a fresh bunch of flowers in a vase and congratulate yourself on a job well done. Then go and do exactly the same thing in the living room. Before you know it you’ll have gone around the house and it will all be spick and span. If you want it to stay that way, keep the doors locked and don’t let anyone back in! Otherwise make sure you keep on top of it - it’s much easier that way. 29

for breast cancer this March Welcome to The Big Tea Cosy

Over 55,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s round 150 people everyday. National charity, Breast Cancer Haven offer free support to anyone affected by the disease from their local Wessex centre in Titchfield. They help people cope with the debilitating effects of treatment and the emotional toll of living with breast cancer. Specialist trained healthcare professionals and therapists run programmes of support, including counselling, supportive therapies to help combat stress, exhaustion and nausea as well as practical advice on things like healthy eating, exercise, money and work. They also recognise that a breast cancer diagnosis can be incredibly distressing for loved ones, so they also free counselling to family members and close friends. Marian Parfitt Centre Manager said “ We have been supporting people locally for 5 years and seen almost 1300 men and women affected by breast cancer. The centre is postioned in the middle of 2 of the biggest Oncology hospitals of Portsmouth and Southampton and cases are particularly high in Fareham and Gosport. We are there to help people at any part of their journey” Their support is free of charge so that anyone who needs help can be seen. But they can’t do it without the generous support. They need to raise around £1,000 for every person they help—and with 3,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the Wessex area each year, their services are more in demand than ever. Without your support they would not be able to continue the valuable work they do. That’s why they’re asking everyone to get the kettle on and make a brew for breast cancer this March by joining their annual Big Tea Cosy campaign. Host a tea party with friends, family, or colleagues any time throughout the month to help raise much-need funds and help more families affected by breast cancer. To get involved, sign up today by visiting breastcancerhaven.org.uk/thebigteacosy and select your local Wessex Centre or call on 01329 559 290 for a pack.

And if you, or someone you know, has been affected by breast cancer please get in touch with Breast Cancer Haven today, they are here to help. Contact their Wessex centre on 01329 559 290.
