Are you feeling a bit Grinchy? I think it’s hard not to! Normally my excitement over Christmas would be off the chart, but this year feels very different. For all we’ve been through as a country and a community, we’ve reached the end of the year with a heavy heart, facing a winter and a Christmas like none we have experienced before. The normal traditions such as Christmas light ‘switch ons’, a visit to Father Christmas or an afternoon at the theatre watching the panto are all under threat, if not already cancelled. Many family traditions will not be able to take place this year, so it’s hard not to say, ‘Bah humbug!’ Christmas should be a joyous time, bringing families together for celebration and reunion. When you strip away the commercialism of Christmas, being with and being there, for one another is all that really matters. That is more prominent than ever now. Of the countless ££’s spent on Christmas presents over the years it is the moments of love and laughter that live long in the memory. Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a challenging time for people, highlighting financial worries and loneliness. This year may be tougher for many with the necessary restrictions in place, limiting the opportunity for whole families to meet and be as one. The impact on the economy has highlighted the inequality of society, between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. When problems feel this big and challenging, it’s easy to feel helpless and lost. It’s going to make a small dent in the problem but we’ve decided to make donations to the local food bank , it feels like it matters more this year and could make a great difference to someone. I’m delighted I have been able to continue to bring this ‘Christmas’ edition of the Big Voice to you. The distributors are working hard to stay safe and observe social distancing as they deliver the magazine. Please give them a smile or a wave for their efforts!

Recipe of the month
Parmesan Biscuits
Moreish festive goodies – great for gifts Preparation time: 20 mins + resting time. Cooking time:10-20 mins Makes: about 24+ Ingredients: 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks 100g plain flour, plus extra for flouring, pinch salt pinch cayenne pepper, 1 heaped tsp mustard powder 50g finely grated mature cheddar 50g finely grated parmesan, or similar vegetarian hard cheese, plus a little extra 1 egg, beaten Method: Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the butter and flour into a bowl of a food processor with the salt, cayenne, mustard powder, and cheeses. Rub the fat into the flour mixture then gradually bring the mixture together to form a dough. Don’t add egg or water. Wrap the dough in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Lightly flour a work surface and gently roll out the pastry to about 1cm thick. Cut out the biscuits using festive cutters. Lay them out on a greased baking tray about 2cm apart. You might need two trays. Brush the surface of each biscuit with the beaten egg and sprinkle over a little finely grated parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes, or until they are golden-brown. They smell heavenly! Remove from the oven and carefully lift the biscuits off the tray using a palette knife, then place on a rack to cool. They make lovely gifts and will keep well in a sealed container for a few days.

Get Crafty this Christmas FOOT AND FINGER PRINT CHRISTMAS CARDS Let your little elves help you create some adorable and fun Christmas cards. Who can resist hand and foot print art? We love making these and they are super simple! Materials needed: • Pack of plain cards and envelopes from The Range or The Works • Paint • Pens •The kids hands or feet. The kids will love being involved and I am sure they will come up with some fantastic ideas, on the left are some designs for inspiration or try your own! Friends and family will love receiving these homemade cards and I save one from each year as a keepsake.
LIGHT UP GOSPORT AND FAREHAM FOR CHRISTMAS Many parents in the local area will probably be aware of the ‘Gosport and Fareham Pumpkin Trail’. Local parents came together to find a way to make sure the children could still have some spooky fun on Halloween but in a COVID safe and socially distanced way. A page was created on Facebook which attracted over 3,000 followers. People with decorated homes were able to ‘pin’ themselves on a map so they could be found by the children on a hunt for pumpkins and fun over the half term week. What a fantastic idea! After such success a second page has been set up and named ‘Light up Gosport and Fareham for Christmas’. Again, the idea is for residents to decorate their home or a window etc for Christmas and ‘pin’ themselves on a map so the children can go and enjoy the Christmas magic in a safe way. We will miss some of our regular traditions this year so we will certainly be joining in, will you?
If you’re bored of having one big tree at Christmas, why not have several smaller ones throughout the house? You can theme them all differently to suit the rooms, or everyone in the house can have their own, even the pets!!! ‘You could even try making some miniature ones from pine cones.’

Christmas at Home How do we make the most of this Christmas? We know Christmas 2020 is going to be a one for the history books. Whether the current lockdown ends before Christmas itself or not, we will all continue to be living with restrictions that will make this Christmas seem very strange. Much of what is familiar and lovely about Christmas in our community will be absent this year. At Holy Rood, we are going to miss the stream of schools and community groups that use the church for carol services and concerts. It is important to acknowledge the sadness we feel even as we try to make the best of things. We want to draw something positive out of this year’s challenges. So, our theme this year is ‘Christmas at Home’. After all, in the Gospel accounts of the first Christmas: • The Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary when she was at HOME; • It was when returning to their ancestral HOME in Bethlehem that Jesus was born; • The Wise Men visited Jesus in a HOME in Bethlehem, bringing their gifts; • It was in an ordinary family with an ordinary HOME in Nazareth that Jesus grew up. As John’s Gospel puts it: ‘The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood.’

Right now, I do know that ‘Christingle at Home’ will be on Thursday 3rd December at 6.30pm and will be live on Facebook. Like all of our services this year, the theme of our Christingle will be the wonderful idea that God’s love and kindness in Jesus can be with us at home as much as it can be anywhere else. The Difference Between Care Homes and Live-In Dementia Care When deciding between care homes or live-in dementia care, how do you choose the right option for you? When a loved one starts developing dementia, it can be a very scary, uncertain time for all. Not only do you have to deal with the confusion that comes with the disease, but you are now also faced with the daunting task of finding the right care and support. No matter if it’s an emergency or just a pair of eyes to make sure everything is okay, care homes can alleviate a lot of this concern. Monitored environment: The reason why there are multiple members of staff available in a care home is that different residents have different needs, with some requiring more attention than others. Whilst your loved one might be entirely independent, there may be others who need roundthe-clock supervision. Therefore, care homes can be the right choice for these people. The staff at a care home will be aware of the medical needs of every resident, and they will ensure that medications are taken on time or provide proper nutritional care. Live-in care allows this to happen safely whilst providing companionship and support they need. Familiar surroundings: People living with dementia find their memories affected, so they can find life bewildering and disorienting at times. However, if they are in their own home, the familiar surroundings filled with items that are associated with memories can help ease some of the confusion. Studies have shown that, if people with dementia live at home they tend to have a better quality of life and much higher activity levels. With a live-in care assistant, they can continue living in the home they love whilst getting the care and support they might require. No rules or restrictions: Depending on the care home, residents may need to adhere to a set of house rules for the benefit of the other members and employees. For example, most care homes don’t allow pets, which can be extremely distressing for those that have animals they love and care for. Similarly, others may have a rule about only one resident per room. As a result, couples who both need care have to be separated. With live-in care, the only rules are stipulated by the customer or their family. As a result, they can have their pets living with
them, which can be immensely beneficial to their physical health and mental well-being. Couples, and even families, can remain together, all helping to take care of each other. Affordable care: A lot of people are under the misconception that live-in care is prohibitively expensive. However, the truth is entirely different. With home care, you only pay for the time the care assistant spends with your loved one. On the other hand, in a care home, you would need to pay for the living space, food, amenities, overheads, bills and maintenance costs, all of which would be included in the fee. In fact, you are looking for care for a married couple, home care or live-in-care is more cost effective than moving both to a care home. In this case, they will be paying the fee twice over, whereas in their own home, their living cost would be much less. The only possible expense that comes with home care might be if you need to alter the setting to make it safer or more practical for your loved one. As you can see, there are many differences between live-in dementia care and care homes that could help you decide which one’s the better choice for your loved one. Keep on running
A Farewell Beer for Ed... November has been bittersweet for us. We’ve enjoyed running in socially distanced groups, and one or two of us have even found some proper old fashioned races to compete in...I say old fashioned but of course they have the modern corona twist! Much fewer participants and staggered starts but races nonetheless. At the time of writing, the dreaded R number is back on the rise and I feel that those races and occasions are being threatened yet again by this awful virus. Foreign breaks are less available than ever before as Europe and countries beyond fight their own war with COVID and folk are doing their best to keep each other safe. Despite all that is happening around us, our weekly Wednesday 545 RunClub managed to come together to say a sad farewell to one of Gosport’s finest. A community stalwart who, with his family, have been instrumental in looking after our local beer drinkers for decades. As founder of Oakleaf Brewery in Mumby Road, Edward Anderson (Ed ‘The Brew’) together with his small band of artisans, created some amazing and hugely popular ales and when Oakleaf became Fallen Acorn, the brewers continued to put out a wonderful array of Gosport’s finest ales which can be found in many a pub and restaurant near you. Fortunately for us, Ed is also a keen runner and occasional triathlete so when we closed the doors of Absolute Running in 2017, the brewery kindly offered to be a venue for our weekly meetings. This was a lifeline for what has always been a social running group comprising elite, novice runners and everything in between. Fallen Acorn also sponsored our (once) annual Gosport Beer Mile race which was a much loved and fun event that would see beer drinking and running combined at Stokes Bay on a Sunday morning in October.

So, why bitter/sweet? Ed and his family are leaving GosVegas for new opportunities on the Isle of Man but we could not let him go without one more Gosport Beer Mile...of sorts! Fallen Acorn’s Marketing Manager Tim put together a route that saw competitors down a pint of Fallen Acorn brew before running to another fine local ale house in Stoke Road (The Four Ale Tap Room). After a second pint, the runners would finally race back to Fallen Acorn before downing a third and final pint to finish. Donations were taken in exchange for the ales and all proceeds went to Rowans Hospice. This hugely successful event was a perfect opportunity to thank, an emotional Ed, for all his hard work and commitment to Gosport over the years. Sad though his departure will be, Ed has already sounded out an Isle of Man Half Marathon so guess where we’re going once it’s considered safe to travel again? Every community needs an Ed. You will undoubtedly know someone who makes a difference to your circle and Ed will leave a huge hole that no-one will fill like he did. We’re already missing you ‘Ed The Brew’ but we’re going to keep the Fallen Acorn fires burning and brews bubbling in your memory. Who are your local heroes? Are they worth a shout out?
