Voice

Smalltalk

It’s the same great magazine..... With the sound of the letterbox flapping and the thud on your door mat, the Big Voice is back and with a fab new look! What do you think? I’m so proud to have continued my work ‘online’ over the last two months, supporting local businesses and providing a community link but it feels great to be back in print! For everyone it’s been the strangest of 3 months. One thing I’ve realised from talking to friends and family is that despite us all operating under the same rules, everyone’s experience has been so incredibly different. As I wrote about in last month’s ‘digital’ edition, we’ve focused hard on the opportunity to have more time as a family and to enjoy each other’s company. I know that won’t be the same for everyone, particularly those readers who live alone and have been asked to shield themselves. My heart goes out to you and I hope that when a vaccine is available, you’re first in the queue! One of the positives I’ve noticed is the pace of life changing and an appreciation for being outdoors on daily exercise. We’ve had some lovely moments, such as teaching our youngest to ride his bike (he is now throwing himself down hills for thrills and it’s terrifying!), paddle-boarding afternoons with the kids (a great activity for social distancing) and my personal favourite of early morning runs. I’ve even noticed an early morning Yoga group at Stokes Bay which looked amazing and I would love to be able to tell people more about that if anyone can provide some info! Bringing back the magazine has been really exciting and advertisers have been keen to get their business back out there. We will all have relied on local trades and shops over the last few months, please continue to support them and of course mention the mag when you give them a call.

Recipe of the month

‘Gin & Tonic with a slice of Lemon’ Drizzle Cake Perfect for a summer afternoon tea

Ingredients 3 large eggs (beaten), 240g butter at room temperature, 240g caster sugar, 240g self-raising flour, 2 large lemons, 200ml gin, 25ml tonic water (optional – elderflower is particularly nice), 130g granulated sugar Method Line a 1Kg loaf tin Preheat oven to 180C / Gas Mark 4. Cream the softened butter and caster sugar together until light. Add the eggs a little at a time and beat until combined. Carefully fold in the flour and the finely grated zest of both lemons. Add the juice of 1 lemon and 100ml of gin, then pour into the lined tin. Bake in the centre of the oven for 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly in the tin while you make the drizzle. Combine the rest of the gin, the granulated sugar, tonic water (if using) and juice of 1 lemon in a bowl. Puncture the surface of the cake all over with a skewer, then pour the drizzle over Don’t remove the cake from the tin until it’s cold and the sugary topping has crystallised. Serve with crème fraiche and a G&T…of course.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

Brought to you by ‘The Reading Agency’ the ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ encourages children aged 4-11 to set themselves a reading challenge to help prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. Never has such support been needed more than during the current lockdown. This year the ‘Silly Squad’ and the Summer Reading Challenge will celebrate funny books, happiness and laughter. Children taking part will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in all different kinds of funny books! The campaign will promote a new digital platform to reach children across the nation. With lots of children already at home the challenge will run from June to September this year and you can join anytime! 1. Join the Silly Squad and pick an avatar 2. Discover some awesome books to read 3. Play games earn points and more 4. Unlock badges throughout the challenge Sign up at www.sillysquad.org.uk

One thing we can certainly be grateful for during lockdown is the sun! Each year, about this time, I like to include some information about being ‘sun safe’. Children’s skin is much more sensitive to the sun than adults, so don’t assume they can handle the summer in the same way! The top tips from the NHS are: Children aged under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight. • Spend time in the shade, particularly from 11am to 3pm • Make sure you never burn • Cover up with suitable clothing, a hat and sunglasses • Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 • Apply sunscreen to areas not protected by clothing. • If swimming, use a water-resistant sunscreen and reapply after you have been in the water. 12

Did you know…….when you buy sunscreen containing UVA protection you may notice a UVA star rating. The stars range from 0 to 5 and indicate the percentage of UVA radiation absorbed by the sunscreen in comparison to UVB, in other words the ratio between the level of protection afforded by the UVA protection and the UVB protection. Be aware that if you choose a low SPF it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing lots of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same. That’s why it’s important to choose a high SPF as well as a high UVA protection. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars is generally considered as a good standard of sun protection in addition to shade and clothing. (Source ‘British Association of Dermatologists)’. Be safe out there & have a great time too!

St. Faith’s Church

Having spent a lifetime working in Devon, John White (pictured) was looking forward to retiring with his wife, Jane, and spending time enjoying his hobbies. After meeting a Lee resident on a cruise and being invited to visit her at her home, John and his wife fell in love with Lee and decided to move here. Eager to know more about the town, he joined the Lee Residents’ Association and to cut a long story short, ended up as their new Chairman. So much for a quiet retirement! John was born in Egham, Surrey before moving to Exmouth at the age of 4 with his parents and younger sister. On completing his education, he decided to apply to the Devon School of Agriculture. Applicants were required to spend a year on a farm first which John at a farm on the upper slopes of Exmoor in North Devon. He was then accepted on a twelve month course and gained his National Certificate in Agriculture and National Diploma in Horticulture. During that year he met Jane who was training to be a teacher at Rolle College, Exmouth. It was clearly a perfect match as they have been together for 52 years now. John has experienced a varied career over the years. In 1968 he joined the Richard Silcocks animal feed industry as the County’s youngest rep. He then acquired a small holding at Dunkerswell rearing pigs and turkeys for five years before re-joining the animal feed industry and becoming a branch manager. In 1985 he opened a Greengrocers shop in Tiverton which flourished enabling him to sell up and finally work independently in landscape gardening and maintenance. Such was the demand for his services that he knew he would probably have to retire elsewhere if he were to enjoy his hobbies in retirement and thanks to the cruise, chose Lee. With previous experience of voluntary charitable work, John was ideally suited to become the Chairman of Lee Residents’ Association which was founded in 1972. The group was originally formed with the aim 14

of ‘making Lee a better place to live and work’. The committee has three principle groups: The Planning Team which considers all local planning applications, the Health and Wellbeing Team which keeps abreast of Health Centre developments and arranges regular local walks and finally the Events Team which organises meetings for residents to engage with representatives of the health services, councillors and others and have their say in what they would like for Lee. Committee members are also available to hear people’s concerns and to give advice. The four-monthly newsletter is currently being redesigned along with the website in the hope of attracting more members of all age groups from every part of Lee. John is passionate to see the membership grow. Annual subscriptions, which entitle members to free delivery of the newsletter and invitations to various events, are only £3 per person or £5 for two people living at the same address. Payments can be made by cash or by cheque made payable to the Lee Residents’ Association and paid in at the red post box in Tesco Express, Pier Street or the Book shop in the High Street. Alternatively you can join on-line at www. leeresidents.org.uk where you can also find out more about the assosication. John and the committee members give their time and work hard to make Lee a better place to live and work. If you need to know more about the association, John would be happy for you to ring him on his home number: 02392 343782. Success of the enterprise depends on the active involvement of people in the community so if you aren’t already a member, please consider joining. Your contribution could make all the difference to the future of Lee. Written by Alan Millard for St Faith’s Church

Gardening ON A BUDGET How to set up a beautiful garden even with the smallest of budgets

For many of us now we are having to be super careful with the pennies which means that additional, unnecessary expenses need to be postponed. But there are ways of revamping your garden space with the smallest of budgets so that you can still have a beautiful oasis to enjoy. First tip is to make the most of what you’ve got. If you have a small budget then accept that you’re not going to be moving from your current situation to a fully landscaped patch unless you have the skills to DIY the whole thing. Look at what can be tidied up to start with and remove all the weeds, old garden furniture and anything that just looks messy. Don’t throw things that could be upcycled just yet - pop those things into a neat pile for later. The second tip is consider removing your lawn altogether if you are working with a small space. Getting the lawnmower out in a tiny garden is a pain and you can easily end up with a ‘bald’, unattractive grassy patch without proper care so sometimes it’s worth the thought of getting rid of it altogether. Whilst paving and paths are initially more expensive the upkeep is far easier. Look for second hand items to fill your garden with. You might go for quirky planters such as watering cans, welly boots, old teapots and saucepans. Garden furniture is often easy to come across on trading sites such as e-bay or Facebook marketplace and with a bit of TLC can be refreshed to provide a lovely splash of interest. You can repaint both metal and wooden chairs and tables to add colour and whilst you’ve got your brushes out why not paint some pots as well to match? I’ve seen some lovely pots hung on fences to give visual height and also along garden walls and trellises. Got an old shed? If it’s looking rather unsightly why not

pop some window boxes filled with lettuce or bright flowers. And if you still have a collection of CDs which are no longer being used you could ‘tile’ the shed with them - the sunlight on them will glitter and look really pretty, as well as covering the dull wood underneath if you can’t afford to repaint. Another great tip is to find old picture frames and hang them on fences - you can use them to ‘frame’ plants also hung on the fence for a quirky, yet pretty display. If you’re short of garden furniture and want something a bit bigger than a metal bistro table, consider recycling wooden pallets which can often be picked up for next to nothing. You can easily find online tutorials for turning them into sofas, tables, chairs and then covering them with foam pads for comfort. Done well they can be extremely practical and stylish. Using gravel is a cheaper alternative to concrete so if you want to create a path then dig up any turf, weeds or other plants that may be in the way. Compact the soil as much as you can so that it is flat and then cover the area in a permeable membrane. Simply scatter the gravel over the top and rake out for evenness. If you lay the gravel deep enough you can insert wooden planks for a twist on stepping-stones. And I shall end on one of my favourites. No matter what your outdoor space looks like it can be totally transformed by the use of solar fairy lights. String them from every possible wall, fence, pole and door and in the evening your garden will be totally transformed into a magical, twinkly oasis that has cost nothing other than a sprinkle of sunshine and a few pounds for the initial purchase. Which one of these ideas is your favourite? Maybe try combining all of them and see where it takes you!

Keep on running

Running for sanity A warm welcome back to the Big Voice Directory! Will life ever be normal again? At least not until we forget what normal ever was. There will always be certain things that serve as a reminder of what life was like before. One thing is certain, since we were all asked to stay at home apart from a ‘period’ of exercise, so many more of us have found running as a way of staying in shape, not only physically but mentally. I have been fortunate in that I have continued working. On my daily commute to and from work I have noticed that more and more of us have taken to pounding the streets and parks. What I find particularly pleasing is the number of families doing it and I really do hope that everyone has enjoyed the enforced time together.

A question I have asked myself is, can the High Street recover from lockdown? Will you venture to a retailer for that more personal experience and advice? Share your thoughts with us all at cartscartergosvegas@ gmail.com. Who knows, if we are really lucky we may even see you at an organised event before the end of 2020. Stay safe. Written by Nick Carter Absolute GosVegas Run Groups.

Organised running clubs and groups have improvised to keep their members motivated and engaged with lots of innovative virtual training runs that have made running solo fun. So, are you new to running or enjoying a return to an old past time? Have you found running solo more fun or have you missed running in company? Have you made new running friends online? I expect the 545 RunClub and The Breakfast Club will seem odd when we eventually join to run as a group once again. I’m looking forward to seeing my running friends socially and personally I feel lucky that this enforced period of isolation has coincided with me being injured. Hopefully, by the time I am able to return to running there will be a relaxation of the rules and we will feel happy that it’s safe to meet in groups again.

Still supporting your loved ones throughout the pandemic During the past few months, it has been more important than ever for Bluebird Care to support our customers in their own homes. Many customers have really felt the impact of not having regular visits from relatives or not being able to go out on their usual shopping trips and connecting with the outside world. We have followed government guidelines very strictly throughout subsequent weeks to ensure customer safety and have battled the PPE shortages with great success to allow the safe continuity of our service. Our fantastic care team have been an absolute lifeline to our customers, not only providing our usual high standard of care but also paying close attention to their mental wellbeing. Having someone pop in, make you a cup of tea and sit down for a chat has never been so important, as well as assisting customers to use technology to contact loved ones or reporting back to families about their wellbeing.

right up to several visits per day for varying lengths of time to suit individual need, we also offer a live-in service. With customers wanting to stay in their own homes more and more, a very popular service is to have a live-in carer, where support can be provided all through the day and night. This has such a positive impact on people’s wellbeing as they are never alone. The house becomes a well looked after and comforting environment and can impact the whole family’s lives for the better. If you would like more information on the services we offer, please visit our website: bluebirdcare. co.uk/Gosport or call our office on 02393 233922

Home Focus

Essentials Whilst it’s lovely to be able to order beautiful accessories online and even now to ‘socially distance’ ourselves in some of the retailers who have opened their doors once again, there are some fundamentals which we need for our homes that should be non-negotiables for a safe and environmentally conscious life. 1. Fire and smoke alarms. This is a big topic and not one which we are experienced enough to cover fully but for peace of mind ensure that you have a robust alarm system installed in your house that is ideally wired to the mains but at worse has batteries that you TEST REGULARLY. An early warning system could be the difference literally between life and death and it’s worth looking at escape routes and checking locks and windows etc should the worst happen. It’s certainly not something we really want to think too much about but you’ll feel better knowing that you are prepared. Consider also charging all your electrical items downstairs and never in the bedroom and making sure that doors are shut before you go to bed at night. 2. A decent doorbell and letterbox. Ok this might sound like a strange one but have you ever actually tested either of these items from the perspective of a visitor or a postman? Many letterboxes are either incredibly stiff or badly situated making the posting of mail rather tricky—letters can get squashed just by trying to insert them through the flap and hands can be scratched by over-enthusiastic letterboxes trying to slam themselves shut! In terms of doorbells, take a look at the location of yours. Is it clearly visible? Can you hear it from both up and downstairs? Have you considered getting an online doorbell so that you can ‘answer’ your door even if you’re out? The technology nowadays is such that you can view the visitors via a camera and even instruct them where to leave parcels etc should you be expecting a delivery. This gives the illusion that you may be at home and ensures that from a security point of

view you don’t have to leave a scrappy note sellotaped to your door indicating that you are not there. 3. Energy saving lightbulbs. It’s very tempting to not purchase these because the initial outlay is much more expensive than the halogen, or incandescent bulbs. But purchasing the LED or CFL options will give you between an 80-90% energy saving and by choosing the LED options a 25 year lifespan with 10 years promised for the CFL bulbs. Given that you make a 30% energy saving on halogen you can do your calculations based on a 2 year lifespan and see how much you actually save over the longer term if you opt for the more expensive versions. 4. Thermostat There are different brands available but if you look at Nest or Hive you will see what this topic is all about. These are more than just thermostats because they learn based on activity in the house and therefore know when to switch on and off. It makes it easier to save money on heating by learning and adapting to our schedules automatically. You can control the thermostat from your phone meaning that you can switch on the hot water or heating in advance of coming home, or simply adjust the temperature of the house without getting up. This makes it ideal for assisted or disabled living homes too. The units have the ability to be ‘zoned’ which makes it useful for bigger properties where you may not want to put the heating on upstairs during the day etc. Again these units are generally reasonably priced and worth having fitted as you can keep an eye on energy usage from the associated app. These ideas may seem reasonably insignificant but all together they add up to a generous number of switches that will save you money and be more efficient.
