Only a few weeks ago..... the idea of enjoying the beach with friends, inviting your family for a barbecue or indeed having your hair restyled was just a distant dream. Now there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel as the country takes tentative, hopeful steps to reopen local businesses and return to normality. Many of these local businesses have burdened the worry of what the future will look like for them and now is more important than ever to support these as they try to re-establish themselves. What will you be doing first? Top of my list is to enjoy some quality time with friends and family and for the children it will be to enjoy a play park! We definitely have more appreciation for the finer things in life. Second is the hairdressers! No more Fraggle Rock in this house. Pounds will be shed from these haircuts! A big challenge for us these last few weeks was a house move! Yes, I know the timing could have been better, haha! Thankfully it all went smoothly, and we are now settled in our lovely new pad, with an exciting few months of renovations ahead. Watch this space! Sunday 5th July saw the 72nd anniversary of the NHS and the final clap of 2020 to show thanks. We were invited by all our lovely new neighbours to share a toast in the street and clap together. What a lovely way to meet everyone and we already feel very happy and at home here. Now, as we move into the school holidays I just need to jam pack the next few weeks with some fun! If your calendar is filled with cancelled plans and postponed holidays or you are struggling for ideas of what to do, take a look at Mum’s the Word on page 12. Some of the ideas are things we have already done as a family and some are new ones that I can’t wait to try.

Recipe of the month
Barbecue Roast Beef This month I thought it would be nice to feature a recipe from one of our readers. Luci Gregory makes a delicious roast beef on the barbecue! What a great dinner for a typical British summer. It’s super simple and you can adapt this recipe depending on how many people you are feeding. Ingredients: 1 medium beef roasting joint, 1 onion, 1 bulb of garlic, 2 potatoes per person (or as many as you like), sprinkle of paprika, olive oil, salt and pepper Method Rest the beef on the worktop for 30 minutes to allow it to reach room temperature. Preheat the gas barbecue or light your coal one. Peel and chop the potatoes into large chunks (roast potato size), peel the onion and cut into wedges, separate the garlic into cloves. Place the beef joint into the centre of a large roasting tin and surround with the potatoes, onion and garlic. Season with paprika, salt and pepper and drizzle everything with a generous amount of olive oil. If using a gas barbecue turn the centre burners off, leaving only the outside burners on. If using a coal barbecue, once the coals are ready and no longer flaming, push the coals out to the sides leaving no coals in the centre and open the vents. Place the roasting tin in the centre of the barbecue ensuring there is no direct heat under it, close the lid and leave. Baste every 30 minutes. The beef should cook in the same time as indicated on the packet, usually about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Luci recommends serving with fried cabbage, thick beef gravy, Yorkshire puddings and a glass of red wine! I’ve not tried this recipe yet, but I definitely will be! If you try it I would love to know how you get on and see some photos!

Summer
like no other If your ‘summer holiday’ calendar looks anything like mine it will be filled with cancelled plans and postponed holidays. The days that are meant to be taken up with summer clubs and events with our friends and families are all empty. For me, this summer was meant to be jam packed with fun, even more fun than normal, especially as it is the last summer before my youngest Jude starts school. But wait…..I will not let corona virus steal this summer from us, and neither should you! Here are some ideas to help you create unforgettable memories with your little ones this year. Movie night and sleepover: Drag the mattresses and bedding into the living room and choose a movie to watch together. Serve popcorn and snacks, sing to a musical or watch a Disney classic, then snuggle down. Warning! You will not get much sleep. Do a puzzle: We have loved puzzles during lockdown, once you’ve completed yours trade with a friend.
Take a yoga class: There are plenty of ‘child’ yoga classes on Youtube, pick one and get the whole family to join in. Find your zen! Chalk pictures: Use brightly coloured giant chalk to create a picture or message on your drive, path or patio. This is a great way to send socially distanced Birthday messages to friends and neighbours. Family dance party: Host a family dance party and introduce the kids to all the old party tunes such as ‘Oops upside your head’, ‘Agadoo’ and ‘Macarena’. Or just some fabulous 80’s and 90’s classics. Face painting: Have a go at face painting each other and have a prize for the best one. Lego challenge: Give each person a bag of mixed lego and challenge them to build a car, house, person or what ever you like. The most creative wins! You can find some great Lego challenges online, just try googling.
Have a water fight: Water bombs can be brought reasonably cheap from most supermarkets and online. Go for the rapid filling self-seal ones for extra fast fun. Let them get soaked and make sure you join in too. Make the most of the garden: Make bird feeders and plant some herbs and flowers. Appoint the children ‘Chief Gardeners’ and entrust them to look after their crops. Or plant sunflower seeds and have a race to see who’s sprouts first and grows the tallest. Then use the seeds in your bird feeder. 12

Build a den or a fort: Help the kids build a fort or den and if you are brave enough let them sleep in it! Clothes dryers and blankets are great for this! Star gaze: Wait for a warm clear night, take out a blanket and some hot chocolate and watch the stars. You could even learn about star constellations and how to spot them. ‘Spa Day’ at home: Pop to Home Bargains and get some face and feet masks. Dim the lights, get some cosy cushions and relax with some books. Paint together: Arrange a family painting session. Chose an artist and replicate one of their pieces. Put some music on and grab some snacks. Geocaching: If you have not done this before it is a great way to make a family walk a little more adventurous! It’s like a from of treasure hunting and orienteering using GPS coordinates to help you find a series of ‘caches’. Download the ‘Geocaching’ app and off you go!

St. Faith’s Church
I remember well how I was feeling at the last church service I attended in the week before the lockdown began. Apart from the fear of succumbing to Covid-19 myself and never seeing the inside of the church again, there was also the apprehension of wondering what it would be like with no more services or the chance to meet up with others for the foreseeable future. What I did not realise then, was that thanks to the technical skills of our vicar, Paul Chamberlain and his team, the services and much more besides would be continuing online throughout the rest of the lockdown. Whether you are regular churchgoer or not, I encourage you to log into our website: http:// stfaithslee.org or our Facebook page: www.facebook. com/stfaithslee where you will find details of all that is on offer. You can join in some or all of the three services that take place each Sunday, either through Facebook live or our YouTube page. Our 8am service is based on the Book of Common Prayer and the 9.30am service includes hymns and organ music, both services incorporate a celebration of Holy Communion. The final service, at 11am, is a lively, interactive service which might appeal to those looking for something less formal and traditional. All three provide a ‘comments’ facility on screen which can be used to greet others who are watching or, if you prefer, be hidden from view. Our Services are not limited to Sundays. Morning and evening prayers are also provided on Facebook from Monday to Saturday at 9am and 5pm. For young children and their families there is a Kids@11 video available on Sundays from 11.30am and our Rainbow Toddlers Song and Story Time on Tuesdays at 11am. The Kids@11 video contains illustrated stories, songs, puppets, ‘making time’ and things to do at home like painting pictures which can be sent in and displayed on subsequent videos. Rainbow

Toddlers Song and Story Time does exactly what the name suggests. There are songs with actions, stories with pictures and a time to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to those whose birthdays fall during the week. As with Kids@11, toddlers can also send in pictures which they have made at home. An addition to church services, ‘Fortnightly Notes’ are also available online through the website page. Anyone wishing to contribute can mail submissions to our administrator Ruth Dewland at churchadmin@ stfaithslee.org.uk. At the time of writing, the current edition includes details of forthcoming events, paintings, poems, photos, a quiz (e.g. what would you do with an Edzell ball?) and the church contact details. Finally, St Faith’s has recently started running a “Life Explored” course using Zoom for people with questions about life and God. Each week there is a video to watch followed by a discussion on the contents and a time to study a section from the Bible. Blue L i gh t Coralie is back :) I’m delighted to be able to pop back into the pages of Big Voice regularly with my own little column. How have you all been? I’ve been keeping an eye on things from afar and I’m so proud of how the Big Voice Bigazine is holding up during these difficult times. And of course it’s mostly down to you guys who live locally who support the publication and all of the businesses who rely on us to use them (and of course Gemma who has made this magazine so fabulous!) Anyway - before I get carried away and get on my Big Voice Soapbox, I’ll move onto this months topic. Blue Light. Not the kind that zips past us late at night with sirens attached but the sort that many of us are subjecting ourselves to every single day in the form of tablets, mobiles and TV screens. If it wasn’t for many of these devices we literally couldn’t have managed over the last few months, so for that I am grateful. But the havoc they wreak on stress levels, emotions and sleep is enormous. Sean and I teach people how to sleep better and of late we are getting more and more people reach out to us who are unable to get good quality (and a good quantity) of sleep. One of the first things we put in place is a strict screen regime, advising that you don’t use devices for at least one hour before bed. This is because blue light has a short wavelength which stimulates sensors in your eyes, which in turn tells your brain that it’s daytime. Without this trick of the light, your brain naturally releases melatonin which is a hormone that helps your body drift into sleep mode. Many of us ignore this (it normally happens from about 930pm in all humans) and we continue looking at screens, tidying the kitchen
or working. The net result is that you miss this ‘wave’ of sleepy assistance and when you do finally turn in you can’t nod off. And if you’re lucky enough to fall asleep, staying asleep can be difficult because your circadian rhythms have been affected. We have felt, particularly of late, that our children need more educating on this subject. So many kids it seems are becoming night owls because they have no school deadline looming in the morning and so they are gaming into the early hours with their friends. Parents, please, even at the risk of being very unpopular, stop your children doing this. The content of what they are playing is cognitively stimulating, the blue light will cause them to take longer to fall asleep and they will often wake up feeling less refreshed because they will have had less REM sleep (and they miss out on all those beautiful dreams as a result!). Lack of sleep can have a detrimental affect on our weight, immune system, skin health, emotions and more and it’s so easy to slip into bad habits that affect our routine making it much harder to get back to natural sleep again. Teenagers are already struggling with hormones that make their worlds more challenging, lack of sleep will just compound the problem so for everyones sakes it’s better that they have a decent bedtime! So I’ll wrap up this month by saying, please try and start getting ready for bed earlier, do those last minute jobs before you feel tired and get a good book to snuggle up with (kids too!) so that you can enjoy the most fabulous day ahead. Things may be tough right now but there are plenty of things that we can still take pleasure in. Take care, until next month...

A Virtual 10k for Charity ‘Flaming’ June certainly had its moments didn’t it! Great weather and the hottest day of the year (so far) was a real test of everyone’s resolve in terms of following the guidelines and practicing social distancing. The (Sunday) Breakfast Club and (Wednesday) 545 RunClub returned and did a great job of ensuring that the gang got back together whilst remaining apart. Staggered starts meant that we ran in small groups but allowed us to get ‘together’ post run to enjoy a group coffee at our HQ outside Bayside Cabin. Unfortunately, our Wednesday 545 HQ at Fallen Acorn Brewers is not yet available (as at time of writing pubs are not yet allowed to open). However, I am sure as beer gardens become available, this will change. Each year we organise an annual charity 10K, it is a relatively small event to raise money for a local charity and the concept is very simple. Event management team ‘Nice Work’ (who look after the Gosport Golden Mile) donate race numbers. Entries are limited to 100 people and the cost is £5 per person. All entry fees are donated to a chosen charity along with any monies raised through t-shirt sales, personal sponsorship and auctions…..you get the idea. The charity changes each year and is chosen by a group vote. Last year, the First Light Trust in Gosport High Street who look after ex-servicemen and women received over £750! This year’s race has become a ‘virtual race’, entrants of all abilities have the entire month of July to run the route and record their best time. The fastest male and female will win a (small) prize. Nice Work have donated the numbers again which were sold for £5 to the 100

runners and we are extremely grateful to two local companies, 33 Green Bottles and RUNR who have donated spot prizes. My employer CO-OP Funeralcare also threw in £300 from their community fund, which is amazing. You may remember from an earlier edition of Big Voice that this year’s chosen charity is Leesland School Swimming Pool and thanks to the wonderful people of Gosport, Fareham and surrounding districts they are looking to receive over £1500! Services such as Leesland Swimming Pool are invaluable to the community, most of our children and grandchildren have learned water safety there and I have enjoyed the odd adult session too. The fact that so many people are willing to put a fiver in our charity bucket is proof that we really are a charitable lot and the power of a community that comes together for good causes cannot be taken lightly. We could easily double the entries and sell this event out but we quite like the friendly feel of a smaller, exclusive run. Did you take part? Have you a story to tell or a photo to share?
