Are you feeling a bit Grinchy? I think it’s hard not to! Normally my excitement over Christmas would be off the chart, but this year feels very different. For all we’ve been through as a country and a community, we’ve reached the end of the year with a heavy heart, facing a winter and a Christmas like none we have experienced before. The normal traditions such as Christmas light ‘switch ons’, a visit to Father Christmas or an afternoon at the theatre watching the panto are all under threat, if not already cancelled. Many family traditions will not be able to take place this year, so it’s hard not to say, ‘Bah humbug!’ Christmas should be a joyous time, bringing families together for celebration and reunion. When you strip away the commercialism of Christmas, being with and being there, for one another is all that really matters. That is more prominent than ever now. Of the countless ££’s spent on Christmas presents over the years it is the moments of love and laughter that live long in the memory. Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a challenging time for people, highlighting financial worries and loneliness. This year may be tougher for many with the necessary restrictions in place, limiting the opportunity for whole families to meet and be as one. The impact on the economy has highlighted the inequality of society, between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. When problems feel this big and challenging, it’s easy to feel helpless and lost. It’s going to make a small dent in the problem but we’ve decided to make donations to the local food bank , it feels like it matters more this year and could make a great difference to someone. I’m delighted I have been able to continue to bring this ‘Christmas’ edition of the Big Voice to you. The distributors are working hard to stay safe and observe social distancing as they deliver the magazine. Please give them a smile or a wave for their efforts!

Recipe of the month

Parmesan Biscuits

Moreish festive goodies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; great for gifts Preparation time: 20 mins + resting time. Cooking time:10-20 mins Makes: about 24+ Ingredients: 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks 100g plain flour, plus extra for flouring, pinch salt pinch cayenne pepper, 1 heaped tsp mustard powder 50g finely grated mature cheddar 50g finely grated parmesan, or similar vegetarian hard cheese, plus a little extra 1 egg, beaten Method: Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the butter and flour into a bowl of a food processor with the salt, cayenne, mustard powder, and cheeses. Rub the fat into the flour mixture then gradually bring the mixture together to form a dough. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t add egg or water. Wrap the dough in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Lightly flour a work surface and gently roll out the pastry to about 1cm thick. Cut out the biscuits using festive cutters. Lay them out on a greased baking tray about 2cm apart. You might need two trays. Brush the surface of each biscuit with the beaten egg and sprinkle over a little finely grated parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes, or until they are golden-brown. They smell heavenly! Remove from the oven and carefully lift the biscuits off the tray using a palette knife, then place on a rack to cool. They make lovely gifts and will keep well in a sealed container for a few days.

Get Crafty this Christmas FOOT AND FINGER PRINT CHRISTMAS CARDS Let your little elves help you create some adorable and fun Christmas cards. Who can resist hand and foot print art? We love making these and they are super simple! Materials needed: • Pack of plain cards and envelopes from The Range or The Works • Paint • Pens •The kids hands or feet. The kids will love being involved and I am sure they will come up with some fantastic ideas, on the left are some designs for inspiration or try your own! Friends and family will love receiving these homemade cards and I save one from each year as a keepsake.

LIGHT UP GOSPORT AND FAREHAM FOR CHRISTMAS Many parents in the local area will probably be aware of the ‘Gosport and Fareham Pumpkin Trail’. Local parents came together to find a way to make sure the children could still have some spooky fun on Halloween but in a COVID safe and socially distanced way. A page was created on Facebook which attracted over 3,000 followers. People with decorated homes were able to ‘pin’ themselves on a map so they could be found by the children on a hunt for pumpkins and fun over the half term week. What a fantastic idea! After such success a second page has been set up and named ‘Light up Gosport and Fareham for Christmas’. Again, the idea is for residents to decorate their home or a window etc for Christmas and ‘pin’ themselves on a map so the children can go and enjoy the Christmas magic in a safe way. We will miss some of our regular traditions this year so we will certainly be joining in, will you?

If you’re bored of having one big tree at Christmas, why not have several smaller ones throughout the house? You can theme them all differently to suit the rooms, or everyone in the house can have their own, even the pets!!! ‘You could even try making some miniature ones from pine cones.’

Not the Tree Festival

– but seeking comfort and joy this Christmas! It is hard for us to imagine Christmas this year. For sure, we can continue to tell the story of Jesus’ birth which proclaims God’s love for all people. The message has been steadfast through all generations, upheavals and plagues over the past 2000 years. But I for one am struggling to imagine how we can gather to celebrate as a community or indeed as family groups with ever increasing restrictions and whilst many people in the UK and beyond are in significant lock downs. Especially those who will be facing the anguish of losing their loved ones this Christmas, in ways that are compounded by the virus. In Alverstoke, we’ll continue to do our best as a parish church to offer the opportunity to tell the story, to pray and to thank God for Jesus, born to proclaim God’s love and to save us! It is in the hope of that message we pray readers will know both comfort and joy this Christmas. We will be hosting ticketed 40 minute Carol Services for 50 people at a time in St Mary’s – they will be repeated each Sunday in Advent. We hope that by doing this about 200 people will be able to enjoy listening to the choir sing our classic carols! We’ll also have a ‘Knitted Angel Nativity Trail’ throughout the village shops. Families can head out to spot the nativity characters in the shop windows and follow the trail to the special crib

which we hope to have outside St Mary’s Church. There will also be some repeated family ‘Crib Services’. Normally we are delighted to welcome 400 people to each of our Crib Services. However, this year we are sorry, but they are required to be spaced out and limited to 50 people per service and so will be repeated. If you are one of the 5,000 people who will miss the tradition of our incredible Christmas Tree Festival, do not worry. This year we are happy to offer our alternative ‘Not the Christmas Tree Festival’! Our online festival will be a 30 minute celebration for you to view from your own home! It will be released online on 10th December, the day the festival would have started and will incorporate wonderful photos of the trees and lights and will tell the story of our community extravaganza. 15 years ago the first issue of Big Voice had been distributed around Alverstoke and we waited with trepidation as to the response we would get for our hard work. The proof, they say, is in the pudding and as I’m proudly writing this column all these years ahead, I am reminiscing back to what the world looked like then. I had a one year old boy, who is now 16 and is a distributor for Big Voice in Lee on Solent! I remember having him in his buggy, wrapped up in blankets, whilst I lugged thousands of magazines around to get them out on time. I came across a particularly long gravel drive in Alverstoke so I left him at the bottom whilst I ran to the letterbox. (I seriously couldn’t face hauling him all the way to the front door!). I vaguely recall this was in The Avenue and to this day remember my horror as I turned round to see a car pulling into the driveway and Toby’s buggy dumped in the gravel in front of them! The things we do, eh? I also had an older daughter who was 11 and used to help package up all of the advertisers magazine copies into their envelopes ready to send. I think I put her off office work as she’s an amazing hairdresser now! But of course, 15 years ago there was no signs of pandemics. What was going on in the world? Well Jamie Oliver was doing battle with schools over Turkey Twizzlers (I so wish he’d got his way); Glastonbury flooded (doesn’t it always?!) and Daniel Craig took over as James Bond. Many women had lots to look forward to at that point and the first ever YouTube video was posted entitled Me at the Zoo!

So lots has happened since then of course and our children are no longer toddlers in buggies. Christmas shopping looks very different - no toys to buy (sob!) and clothes are different and more in demand than when they were younger. I remember the polite, but disappointed reaction to a new outfit whereas now it’s all they want! It all feels very different today and I am taking more comfort from nature to help ground me during times that get a bit overwhelming. Not being able to get together with all the people we’d like to, the worry of ‘what if’ can sometimes overtake my brain. So yesterday, after a very challenging week, I popped out to get some necessary shopping and allowed myself to try and let go of some of the things that had been weighing me down. Whilst I wasn’t carrying a few hundred magazines any more, my shoulders could still feel the heaviness of my old backpack and I figured this was crazy. I needed to let go of the burden as it wasn’t serving me. And then, low and behold, I got out of my car and nature served me up the biggest reminder that all is good, if only you take the time to look for it. The biggest rainbow I think I have ever seen was right in front of me, with both ends no doubt reaching the ground. I feel sure there would have been a pot of gold right there. So I took a deep breath in, grabbed my bags, put on my mask and carried on. After all, who knows what I’ll be writing in the next 15 years? Until next month

Keep on running

A Farewell Beer for Ed... November has been bittersweet for us. We’ve enjoyed running in socially distanced groups, and one or two of us have even found some proper old fashioned races to compete in...I say old fashioned but of course they have the modern corona twist! Much fewer participants and staggered starts but races nonetheless. At the time of writing, the dreaded R number is back on the rise and I feel that those races and occasions are being threatened yet again by this awful virus. Foreign breaks are less available than ever before as Europe and countries beyond fight their own war with COVID and folk are doing their best to keep each other safe. Despite all that is happening around us, our weekly Wednesday 545 RunClub managed to come together to say a sad farewell to one of Gosport’s finest. A community stalwart who, with his family, have been instrumental in looking after our local beer drinkers for decades. As founder of Oakleaf Brewery in Mumby Road, Edward Anderson (Ed ‘The Brew’) together with his small band of artisans, created some amazing and hugely popular ales and when Oakleaf became Fallen Acorn, the brewers continued to put out a wonderful array of Gosport’s finest ales which can be found in many a pub and restaurant near you. Fortunately for us, Ed is also a keen runner and occasional triathlete so when we closed the doors of Absolute Running in 2017, the brewery kindly offered to be a venue for our weekly meetings. This was a lifeline for what has always been a social running group comprising elite, novice runners and everything in between. Fallen Acorn also sponsored our (once) annual Gosport Beer Mile race which was a much loved and fun event that would see beer drinking and running combined at Stokes Bay on a Sunday morning in October.

So, why bitter/sweet? Ed and his family are leaving GosVegas for new opportunities on the Isle of Man but we could not let him go without one more Gosport Beer Mile...of sorts! Fallen Acorn’s Marketing Manager Tim put together a route that saw competitors down a pint of Fallen Acorn brew before running to another fine local ale house in Stoke Road (The Four Ale Tap Room). After a second pint, the runners would finally race back to Fallen Acorn before downing a third and final pint to finish. Donations were taken in exchange for the ales and all proceeds went to Rowans Hospice. This hugely successful event was a perfect opportunity to thank, an emotional Ed, for all his hard work and commitment to Gosport over the years. Sad though his departure will be, Ed has already sounded out an Isle of Man Half Marathon so guess where we’re going once it’s considered safe to travel again? Every community needs an Ed. You will undoubtedly know someone who makes a difference to your circle and Ed will leave a huge hole that no-one will fill like he did. We’re already missing you ‘Ed The Brew’ but we’re going to keep the Fallen Acorn fires burning and brews bubbling in your memory. Who are your local heroes? Are they worth a shout out?
