“M

Smal ltalk Smalltalk y neighbour asked...

… if he could use my lawnmower and I told him of course he could, so long as he didn't take it out of my garden” said the late Eric Morecambe. Very funny but not very friendly though!

It seemed like an apt quote though to introduce you to a new monthly feature that we’re running called ‘Over the Hedge’. Don’t you just love mooching in estate agents windows, rightmove and the property pages of magazines to see how “other people” live? I know we do - it’s a harmless form of voyeurism that can often take you off into a dream world of how life could be if you lived in a different village/house/budget. So when we were watching the kids film of the same name we suddenly figured we could run a feature in our own magazines taking a look at people’s gardens. Whether they are big, small, unkempt, manicured, landscaped or hand crafted we want to see them! We are delighted that a lovely couple from Gilkicker have put themselves forward for the first month - take a look at their beautiful garden on page 34. Don’t be shy - send us a snap of yours and you could be next! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

Life Matters at St Mary’s

WE’RE NOT GETTING ANY YOUNGER Like the Government and health services the challenges faced by an increasingly elderly population are a concern to Alverstoke parish. With both a large number of residential and nursing homes and a high percentage of retired people living in their own homes we joyfully recognise that many of the elderly continue to lead rich and fulfilled lives; often as active members of the church. But with the challenges of ageing and with Haslar expected to host sheltered housing and a retired community, we are conducting a review to explore how we can best provide for the spiritual needs of the elderly - particularly the very frail and their carers.

Our priority though, is spiritual care and nurture; making it possible for those who have always gone to church to continue to receive the comfort and support of worship in their present circumstances - we need your help in locating them and discovering needs. Can you help us by befriending a neighbour or letting us know their need? Are you a carer who would like to get a frail person to church? Whatever your perspective we’d love to hear from you -particularly if you have suggestions for enabling the church to be more supportive of the elderly. Trusting yourself to go for it! Life is for living to the full and that means that in all areas of life you need to go for it! As we all know stretching out of your comfort zone can be both scary and exciting. And it should be! Any goal that is only exciting is too small and we will grow out it far too quickly. Any goal that is only scary is too big and we simply won’t go there. So the right kind of goal is the one that is both scary and exciting! So much for the theory, but what about the practise? When you are sitting in front of a big stretchy goal often one of the challenges is “Can I trust myself to be able to handle this? Will I be able to handle the challenges inherent in this, and succeed?”

However if we feel we can trust ourselves it is so much easier to take that first step. I recently asked a client to take a walk through his life and identify as many times as he could remember when he hit a challenge and what he did to overcome it. When he reported back the stress was all but gone from his face. He said that he had seen many times (and some he had forgotten about until he did this exercise) when he had indeed hit a 10

My gang show experience It is with gratitude that I was involved in the amazing year Gosport Gang Show has experienced! When I first joined the gang show 5 years ago, I was very shy and I wasn’t particularly sure if I’d be confident enough to get on stage, let alone have the ability to perform to the excellent standard of the gang show but five years later I still find myself performing in the cast, even taking on a solo part.

guiding movement I would strongly recommend joining the Gosport gang show as it is great fun and an extremely rewarding experience for people of all ages beyond the age of 8. The “show” itself is fun to do but the best part is “The gang” meeting new friends and reconciling with friends from past years. We have a lot of fun at rehearsals and the cast is supportive of one another. If you are unconfident about joining, as I originally was, my advice is to sign up and enjoy the amazing feeling of being on stage, if you are not involved in the scouting or guiding movement you can still show your support by coming to watch the Next Gosport Gang Show in 2016.

The Gosport Gang Show is an annual show consisting of song, dance, spectacle and comedy, performed by members of the scout and guide movements from the age 8 onwards. Once you have performed one show (the dress rehearsal) you are given your red scarf (a bright red neckerchief with the gang show emblem on the back) the Jake Jones aged 12 red scarf is an accolade worn by the Best Gang shows in the country and it represents not only the achievement of excellence but also the community between gang shows. Being presented the scarf by the show’s producer is a tradition when each new member is welcomed in to the gang show family. This year our show included 14 different items including a Beatles medley and 5 different comedy sketches. My favourite item was named “the 12 days of scout camp” (the scouting take of the Christmas classic the 12 days of Christmas) it was incredibly fun to perform and has the audience laughing . If you are a member of the scouting or

A company’s job is to make money, nowt wrong with that, but our job is to keep it. Some firms use a host of tricks to keep us in the dark, yet if you can uncover their secrets you can win.

However, as always price varies by region and usage, so do a comparison to see how it stacks up for you via my www.CheapEnergyClub.com (where you also get switching cashback) or any www.ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison Their techniques are wide and varied. One site. example is 'price differentiation', where they aim to charge each customer as Zara sells its clothes at a fraction of the much as they'll pay - often done using price. If you’re one of millions planning a 'white labels', where the same thing is trip to Spain this summer, you may want sold under different names. So here are 7 to stop shopping at Zara here right tricks to turn the tables… now. Spain is Zara's home country and it sells its clothes at vastly lower prices British Gas customer? It also operates there. Better still, the www.zara.com under the name Sainsbury's Energy but Spain website has an English language there it's £200/year cheaper. British Gas option, you can compare prices before runs Sainsbury's Energy for the you go (you can’t order UK delivery from supermarket, yet there you pay it far less. it). Based on a year’s typical dual fuel usage... Clothes there are often cheaper in euros - On British Gas’ standard tariff you pay an than in pounds, even before the currency average £1,154. conversion. In fact on a basket of goods it - On British Gas’ Price Promise March was on average 38% cheaper. Some of 2016, its cheapest deal, you pay average you may think ‘ah yes I’ve seen the euro £1,100. price on some labels in the UK’, but that’s - On Sainsbury Fixed Price March 2016, usually the French price, which is you pay average £950. generally more expensive. This trick works for others in the same group, Massimo Sainsbury's Energy does have separate call Dutti, Pull & Bear and Uterque. centres, but it's still operated by British Gas and while like many energy firms it If a loan's advertised at 3.9% rep APR, gets its fair share of complaints, in my they're allowed to charge 20%. Every loan most recent poll 43% rated its service these days is listed as a 'representative' or 'great', British Gas 37%. 'rep' APR - that means by law only 51% of accepted applicants need to get the So if for some reason you're brand loyal advertised rate. The rest can be and and want to stick with British Gas, huge usually are charged more, and there's no savings are still possible. cap on how much more. Worse, the only way to know is to apply, and that leaves a footprint on your credit file. So be very careful. One way to mitigate this somewhat is to use the calculator at www.mse.me/ eligibility which tells you your odds of being accepted without marking your credit file. The higher your acceptance odds the more likely you are to get the advertised rate, although it’s not guaranteed. Amazon shopper? You're entitled to music going back 16 years. If you've bought CDs or vinyl, you're entitled to the downloads for nowt going as far back as 1999. To be fair Amazon doesn’t hide that you can do this, but it’s a good trick.

Just login to your www.amazon.co.uk music library to see if you’ve any past tracks available. As JHL1959 told me: "Crikey, it's given me 182 albums, that's 2,367 tracks. Amazingly, I still like a lot of them - cheered me up." It’s not always such a success though, GingerJuice said: "Just did this - thought it was brilliant then realised I'd bought the mother-in-law the Susan Boyle CD last year... ugh." Only get good mobile signal with one network? Switch to a piggyback. Many people tell me "I wish I could switch network but only Vodafone/EE works in my home." Yet there's a way to switch provider but keep the same signal... Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. E.g. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three (full piggyback list at www.mse.me/piggyback). So check which other providers piggyback on your existing network and see if they’re cheaper. Energy firms can't charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn't wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you're allowed to switch without penalty. Play the codeshare trick - where two airlines sell the same flight. Airlines don't shout that their partners often sell their flights too, sometimes for less. If you're going on popular long-haul routes this can be a way to save.

Little snacks Little forr El fo Elev evenses enses INGREDIENTS 5 stalks of celery 10 tablespoons of peanut butter Quarter of a red pepper, chopped into small pieces

METHOD Making healthy nibbles for children can be super simple, especially if you get them involved. These crunchy nibbles are easy to make and really tasty too! Give the celery a wash under the tap and then cut into smaller sticks about 10cms long. Fill up the inside bit with some peanut butter. Chop up the red pepper into little pieces and add to the top of the peanut butter. Sultanas work well too if you want to add some sweetness!

We hope you are enjoying the sunshine and making the most of being out in your garden. When the weather is good we all like to invite friends and family round to enjoy a b-b-q, have a get together, or just do some gardening and why not. We all tend to open windows to let fresh air in. When you are in the back garden think security!! Please do not leave your windows open or your exterior doors unlocked especially if you are in the back garden! It only takes a thief seconds to enter your home and take what belongs to you. During this welcome hot spell burglars will be on the lookout for easy targets! Could this happen at your address??? Vehicle security is just as important as your home security. Lock all the doors, windows, boot and sunroof every time you leave your car - however briefly. Do not become a victim of crime-be safe be secure- think security!
