“D

Smalalltalk Sm ltalk

on’t underestimate the value of doing nothing….

… of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear and not bothering” said (my favourite) Winnie the Pooh. I have got to the tender age of 40(ish) and I’m only just starting to appreciate the benefits of just stopping. That might sound completely ridiculous but when you’re an incredibly busy person there just isn’t the time to stop. With endless lists, children to sort and businesses to run where do you schedule a ‘stop’? After all, if I stop then that pushes things out of sync and then I’m even busier when I come to start again. That’s right isn’t it? Or not. We recently found ourselves child free for a day and with the weather being fairly miserable decided, uncharacteristically, to pack up some sandwiches and a few books and drive down to Titchfield Haven. We set up camp in the back of our Bongo (lovingly known as the fun bus to the kids) and sat for an afternoon doing very, very little. It seemed decadent, luxurious and amazing. And the best bit? It rejuvenated me and gave me more energy to do all the things I needed to the following week. OK so this seems a bit obvious but until you step out of your comfort zone and realise the world doesn’t fall apart if you take a little time out then you’ll never know how therapeutic it can be. Go on, try it.

Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

ST MARY’S JUNIOR SAILING CLUB Have you enjoyed seeing the church sailing boats on the creek? Perhaps you’ve even been a member of the club. The year was 1965. Sir Winston Churchill died, Stanley Matthews plays his first First Division game of football, a 70mph speed limit is imposed on British roads - and The Revd Bill Rees, then Rector of Alverstoke, had a brainwave: start a sailing club for the children of Alverstoke parish!

‘Vikings’ club. The Vikings had started in 1954 in Southsea but at the end of their first year, the then Rector Revd Canon Windsor Roberts hosted a meeting in our St.Francis Church, Clayhall, and the club was to establish a base on the church land next to a beach on the creek along Clayhall Road.

The Clayhall Road site remains the home of St.Mary’s Junior Sailing Club and now, with two renewed club boat houses sheltering a fleet of a dozen modern sailing dinghies, St.Mary’s Junior Sailing Club: and a team of dedicated sailing 1965-2015 officers and parents, the club is Fifty years later we can look back thriving for the young people of on the history of the sailing club on Alverstoke parish in this Golden the creek which has been enjoyed Anniversary year. It is a privilege for me as Rector to be the honorary Commodore of the sailing club and I would like congratulate the club and thank the hard working committee and sailing officers who continue to give so much for the benefit of the community. The club chairman, Richard Baker-Jones is serialising the club’s story in the church’s parish news magazine leading up to an anniversary regatta on the creek on 19th September. Grass Roots Are you a true gardener? The other evening there was a knock at the door. Outside was a man who informed me that the tree in the front garden needed to be pruned back and that he was the person to do it for me. Now the tree in question is a Betula ermanii which is known for its main characteristic which is particularly stunning bark creamy white, tinged with the faintest blush of pink. It also has a conical crown, catkins in the spring, mid green leaves throughout the season and a gentle yellow glow about it in the autumn. I love that tree. It is the first thing I see every morning and the birds sit in it and welcome the day. I love it to such an extent that we paid for a

telephone engineer to come and reroute the telephone wires that ran through its crown, rather than cut it back in any way, which would have been significantly easier and cheaper to do. So there is no way that anyone was going to chop the crown of that tree off, however enterprising they may have been. The man on my door step looked at me as though he could not believe his ears when I told him this. He went away but it was this man’s incredulity at my refusal to chop the tree back that made me realise what really divides the true gardener from the rest of the population. It is this: - if a plant you love, such as the case of my Betula ermanii, becomes entangled in some aspect of modern living, do you sacrifice the plant or try and find a way to save it? Obviously there are situations when the plant has to go but there are plenty of others were the plant is sacrificed just because it is the easiest, quickest or cheapest thing

to do, particularly with trees. I think it is so sad to see trees that have had their heads chopped off, so to speak, especially when done badly or incorrectly. It looks brutal, impatient and aggressive. That said, I have a dilemma on my hands at the moment. A garden which is being designed by my company, has a semimature willow tree in it, which is 2m away from the house of their next door neighbour. I think it should be removed to prevent any damage being inflicted on the house in the future but the garden owner wants to keep it as it is a graceful tree which her children love playing around. So what to do? It breaks my heart to get it removed yet it was planted so badly in the first place that it will eventually cause damage to the neighbour’s house. So in this instance, it might be better to pollard it (correct term for chopping its branches off) so that it lives to see another day. So, the conclusion I’ve eventually arrived at is that the true gardener is the one who plans ahead. For more info about this sort of thing, download the first chapter, FREE, of my forthcoming book ‘The Garden Equation. How to have a garden you love that fits beautifully into your lifestyle’ at www.yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk By Sally Tierney, www.yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk

Hampshire Trading Standards Service is warning the public to be wary of doorstep cold callers. Never feel pressured into buying anything on the doorstep.

Phone Scams. Each year many people fall victim to fraudsters - sometimes operating from overseas - intent on stealing their personal and financial information. If you receive an unsolicited or unexpected telephone call be on your guard as it may be a scam. Never give personal or financial information out to anyone who cold calls you on the telephone. Be cautious and if in doubt, hang up. In all cases, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Summer Security Tips

 Keep the boundaries to properties secure – by locking side gates  Make sure windows and doors are locked when going out and at night  Ensure front doors and windows are locked when out in the garden as ‘sneak in’ burglaries can increase in the summer months.  Fully lock UPVC doors with a key – don’t just lift the handle  Don’t advertise on social networking sites that you are going on holiday.  Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times. Leaving windows open may keep your vehicle cooler during the daytime hours but only makes it easier to gain access to your vehicle. Keep all valuable items in a locked glove compartment or hidden away.  Lock your bike with a good quality lock. When storing your bike in a garage or shed secure it to a ground or wall anchor.
