otivation is what gets you started…

Habit is what keeps you going” said Jim

Ryun, an American Athlete. It got me thinking that many of us who have set our goals and wishes at the beginning of the year may be finding that now the summer is upon us, and willpower is lowering as we think of slipping into Autumn, that those things we fervently set out to achieve in January may be sliding from our grasp. And perhaps the reason is that we either weren’t committed to doing what we decided all those months ago, or we didn’t get into the HABIT of making that thing happen. Indeed a decision we made last year as a couple was to incorporate a fresh juice into our diet, at least once daily. We enjoyed blending fresh kale from the garden, including thick broccoli stems which would ordinarily end up on the compost, various fruit and other vegetables and chucking in copious amounts of ginger which sent Sean's hayfever packing (an unexpected, but very welcome result!). With the cleaning of the blenders and juicers, and the extra bit of organisation needed to make these each day it would have been easy to stop eventually. But once it became a habit it’s tough to break. So even when we have days out we make sure that we get our juice and do you know, if you look out for them there are juice bars popping up everywhere. So we grabbed one recently in Hyde Park at a festival, in a little street in Ibiza on a holiday and even the kids join in now, despite what can seem a very dubious mix sometimes! If there’s something you want to do, or your resolve has slipped, get started again and we’ll hear no more excuses! Much love until next month Coralie and Sean x

It is not wrong that the standard should be ‘excellent’ but the The summer break will soon be here pressure to deliver this on an for the children and staff in education. I hope that the staff of our individual basis for each and every child is huge on staff who are very local schools get a really good professional today and cannot ‘coast’ break. I want to applaud our schools in Alverstoke parish where there are 7 through lessons and a school day. The politicians now say that even infant and junior schools and our the schools which constantly deliver amazing Bay House School and VI Form. In my work I am a governor for ‘outstanding’ results are cruising and need to do better! Schools do deliver three of the schools. The schools do an excellent job for our children and all these days and there is no justification for any further erosion of the respect the staff truly do deserve a schools and staff need in order to tremendous applause and much thrive on behalf of the students. appreciation.

In order to support their strive for excellence a community must back it’s schools.

I’ve been a school governor for 18 years serving a variety of schools and am a member of the Diocesan Board of Education. Changes in education and in the school environment have been non-stop in all that time such that many Big Voice readers who might visit a school truly would not recognise it from their own childhood. Education is different today. Standards and the quality of education have markedly improved and with them have the expectations of society, government and parents to ‘deliver’. There is a pressure on staff 6

It is a privilege to serve local schools which arise out of our community and need our whole community to support and care for them. Our schools would love greater links with the communities in which they are placed - folks helping as volunteers, people to be governors, sponsors for events and equipment etc. Could that be you? Besides a number of school staff, as a parish church there are some 20 members involved as governors of local schools and others as classroom volunteers. One of my church staff has been helping as class volunteer

with weekly reading over the past year. Alverstoke Parish has started a new Assemblies Team of 6 folk who visit the primary schools to lead ‘collective worship’ and tell stories through the children acting or with puppets. For one school this even led on to some creative writing and drama whilst in another we’re creating a ‘Forging Links’ group to see how the parish can better support the school. Whether or not we get involved with our local schools let us afford the staff and volunteers the care and respect they need from their local community. It is by such wider support for them that they will continue to excel on behalf of the children.

Grass Roots

By Sally Tierney, www.yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk

If you want to save the planet, take up gardening There is a quote that goes along the lines of ‘If you want to save the planet, take up gardening’. I don’t know who said it, but it’s extremely good advice. I love gardening and helping others to enjoy their gardens too but it never occurred to me, until recently, that I was also contributing to the bigger picture, that of caring of our planet too. As a busy person, running my company, Yorkshire Garden Designer and caring for my own garden, I don’t stop to think about much beyond the immediate and the urgent. I’m sure you do much the same. So it came as a surprise to find that in actual fact I was doing quite a good thing, in my own little way, to boost the health of the whole planet. As a gardener, one of my primary goals is to keep the soil in my veg patch in good heart and by that I mean that I work quite hard to make ensure that I put a decent amount of organic matter in the soil every year which gives it good structure, keeps it moist, fertile and supports a wide range of soil born organisms. An easy way to check the condition and fertility of your soil is to do the worm test. To do this, just dig a hole in one of your borders, about a foot down (30cm) and as wide. Get a clean piece of plastic and put the soil 24

because the soil loses its organic matter (which happens for many reasons) and as a result becomes light and dry. So when the wind blows, the thin soil goes with it and without any soil, it is impossible to grow anything. You may think that this is a problem that only countries such as Ethiopia must deal with but you’d be wrong. Soil erosion happens in the UK too, and for There is an obvious benefit to the same reasons as in Ethiopia. keeping the soil in good heart. Once you have finished the hole, look through the excavated soil and count the number of worms you find there. If you have 8 or more, your soil is in excellent condition. If you have less, or even only one, you know that you need to get some wellrotted organic matter into it as quick as possible.

Soil erosion is a huge problem worldwide and whole populations have experienced devastating famines as a consequence. It comes about
