This Big Voice Bigazine is delivered to residents and businesses in Alverstoke. For distribution enquiries please give me (Gemma) a call. Two other editions are also published in Stubbington & Hill Head and Lee on Solent.

Summer didn’t get off to the best start this year and for a while it felt like we were living in ‘Monsoon June!’. Now the sunshine is finally upon us let’s hope it will last at least a good month or so. I love the school holidays for the simple reason that I get to enjoy a lot more time with the children! Alverstoke, Lee on the Solent and Stubbington are fantastic places to live, especially at this time of year and there are plenty of places to explore and things to do that don’t cost the earth! We have already managed to get to the Stokes Bay Splash Park a couple of times and enjoyed a ‘chippy tea’ on the beach. What a fantastic, free facility this is and so we are super excited to see what the new Splash Park in Lee on Solent will be like. It is due to be ready in time for the summer holidays, so I will be sure to give you a review next month! Six weeks may feel like a lot of time to fill, so if you are looking for some new ideas of what to do or where to visit, check out ‘Mum’s the Word’ on page 12. After some great feedback last year, I have put together another guide of local places to go, clubs and activities. Next month will be a ‘Back to School’ guide, if you have any tips you would like to share with fellow parents, I’d love to hear them!

Whilst Big Voice Directories aim to provide a quality publication for local reference, it cannot be held responsible for the services, reputation or cost of any of the advertisers, and content of adverts or editorial herein. Readers must make their own enquiries to establish the credentials of each entry. Reproduction in whole or in part is strictly prohibited without prior written permission from the Publishers. The magazines are produced on paper sourced from FSC approved paper mills and printed using vegetable based inks. They love being recycled but please pass to a friend first!

Although August is a month of holidays and hopefully some relaxing, it is also a planning month in our house as September is a big Birthday month for us. Our youngest will be turning 4 and has asked for a ‘hot dog’ party (any ideas greatly appreciated), my husband will be turning 41, but the big one this year is my Mum’s 60th! Of course she doesn’t want a fuss but we will certainly be celebrating!

Mum’s the Word This months ‘Mum’s The Word ‘ is a ‘Summer Special’ containing lots of ideas, events and clubs to keep the children entertained over the summer holidays!

The great outdoors and local places to visit... Visit the Park…...there are plenty of parks in the local area and the best thing is they are FREE! In Gosport our favourite is the play and splash park at Stokes Bay. The NEW Lee on Solent Splash Park will open soon too! Not only can you enjoy wet and dry play but you can also visit the beach! In Stubbington we love the park found on the recreation ground behind the library and we always pop to Costa to grab a drink and treat before heading there! Explore nature…...visit Gosport’s wildlife haven, The Alver Valley Country Park. Look out for all sorts of flowers, birds and butterflies and if you are really lucky you may even see the odd barn owl or water vole. Cycle, walk or run and in the late summer you can even enjoy a spot of blackberry picking. As well as visiting all the different wild grounds, lakes and bridges there is an adventure playground and BMX track for all to use. This is a perfect spot for Geocaching! Little Woodham, living history village…...this 17th century village situated off Howe Road in Rowner allows you to step inside the pages of history books. Open the doors of real homes and immerse yourself in the everyday life of a small village. Meet the seamstress, potter and blacksmith or listen to a mother telling tales of faeries to her children. A unique and educational experience which so many local people are yet to discover. Visit www.littlewoodham.org.uk for further information and prices. Museums…...in this area there are plenty of museums to explore. Many cost a few pounds to enter but generally kids under 5 are free (call ahead or check the websites). Locally there is the Hovercraft Museum, Diving Museum, Explosion and the Royal Navy Submarine museum and a little further away there is Fort Nelson and the D-Day Museum. Garden Centres and Aquatics…...involve the kids with the gardening, you can get some jobs done and they will enjoy helping out. Show them how to weed, plant and sweep. Why not plan a trip to a Garden Centre such as Garsons in Titchfield, there’s a lovely café and a Reptile and Aquatics Centre to explore or if you pop into Maidenhead Aquatics in Gosport you can feed the Koi Carp for £1! Libaries......we are lucky enough to have a few

libaries within a good distance, many of which host weekly activities and events for children, espcially over the holidays. Gosport Discovery Centre seems to be ‘nailing’ summer this year with a jam packed schedule, from storytimes to ‘mini makes’, (check websites or contact them directly for details). Don’t forget the Summer Reading Challenge!

12

The Summer Reading Challenge...

Starts on Saturday 13th July at Gosport Discovery Centre and continues throughout the Summer. This years theme is ‘Space Chase’, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Join the super space family ‘The Rockets’ for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! Children can read whatever they like as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are special rewards each time they finish a book and a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. Open to all primary school aged children and designed for all reading abilities. Library staff support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books.

Clubs and Events... FREE open access sessions for children and young people up to 12 years. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult carer. Below is just a small selection of dates, for the full schedule please check the Play Rangers Facebook page @YPlaYrangers or the website: www.fareham.gov.uk/leisure/out_and_about_in_fareham/playrangers.aspx Thursday 1st August, 10am - Midday, Stubbington Recreation Ground. SPRING THROUGH AUTUMN Tips to help you plan your garden now so that you’re ready to plant spring bulbs during the Autumn time.

I’ve often wondered if gardening should be on the National Curriculum. Apart from learning about plants, the cycles of nature, weather, birds, insects and the whole gardening ecosystem, the biggest thing that could be taught is that of planning and patience. With so much reliance placed on immediate gratification, instant results and everything being done at double quick speed, the one thing that cannot be hurried is the growth of a plant. Fair enough, with a hefty budget and a bit of assistance, a garden can be fashioned with the help of a garden centre by purchasing it all ready made. But that’s where the fun stops - the plants still need to be looked after and at some point the beds will need adding to or adjusting. And anyway, where’s the fun in getting it all ready grown in pots? We could teach our children the satisfaction of seeing a little seedling poking its first tendril through the soil, caring for it with water and kind words and then subsequently potting it out to bloom and grow. Nothing beats seeing the face of a child who has grown their own cress seeds with their chubby little hands. And that’s something that I would love to see restored for our children now who, oftentimes, miss out on this amazing, gentle pleasure. So back to our topic in hand. In order to achieve a lovely garden, whether it be a big or small plot, a little bit of planning really does go a long way. And what better way to do it than from your garden chair, a glass of Pimms in hand and a selection of catalogues to go through. Of course you’ve also got the online alternatives and I’ve found Pinterest to

be a fabulous resource for ideas. Set up a board to store all your gardening pins throughout the year and you can come back to them when you’re ready. If you’d like to have spring flowers from bulbs, you ideally want to get them planted out in the autumn. That’s because the soil is still warm so it allows bulbs to get their root system developed, ensuring that they flower in the spring, rather than the summer.

Crofton Parish

A NEW STAFF TEAM MEMBER IN CROFTON PARISH Let me introduce myself, my name is Jenny Wilford and I am the new Parish Seniors Community Development Worker. My role is to work with older people in the parish and to help develop strong links with the community organisations that support them. I have been a committed Christian for most of my life and have been worshipping at Holy Rood Church for past few years with my husband, Wilf, after moving here from a church in Lee-on-Solent. I was born in Chester and came to the Stubbington area after a short career in the Royal Navy. I have two daughters and two grandsons and in my spare time I enjoy art, cycling and jogging with the Stubbington runners. Two years ago, I retired from a career in health and social care and in May applied to work in a voluntary capacity as a ‘Senior’s Worker’ as part

of the overall parish vision. Today, many churches employ someone to work with young people and the idea of having someone who can specifically support and work with older, retired people is relatively new. However, with an aging population this idea is becoming increasingly more common. During my working career I was engaged with adults in all areas of life, particularly enabling them to remain within the community. This entailed providing social, emotional and mental health support across a wide range of disciplines from hospitals and hospice care to support within the home. This involved assessing the impact on individuals and families resulting from issues such as the loss of identity, isolation, bereavement and deterioration of physical health and determining the effect these have on ordinary everyday life. Everyone needs to feel a valued part of the community and there is often a clear relationship between physical health, spiritual needs and mental well-being. In my new role, I plan to bring some of these requirements together by developing new opportunities for older people through support groups and services. Although as yet it is early days, over the next few months or so, I hope to get to know people in the community better and to

understand their needs, to research and develop relationships with existing community groups and those provided by statutory services, and, in light of this, maybe, offer some additional groups to offer support not covered elsewhere. Finally, I hope to develop and train a team of volunteers to work within the statutory legislation. Things at the moment are in their early stages but I am excited about the possibilities that my new role will offer and look forward to meeting many of you over the coming year. If you would like to

know more or would just like to get in touch with suggestions, then do contact me either through my parish email address or the parish office, details below. Jenny Wilford, Seniors’ Community Development Officer Church Office: 01329 661154 Jenny@croftonparish.org.uk www.croftonparish.org.uk

Keep on Running The ‘Golden Mile’ ‘Where did that year go?’ This is a phrase I seem to be hearing more and more as I get older. It’s rather scary how quickly time passes and with each year I realise more and more how important it is to enjoy the moment or you will feel it is gone too soon. Suddenly we are in the midst of Summer 2019 and the Gosport Golden Mile has come and gone. This was our 7th consecutive year and I was determined that I was going to be the quickest 50 something ever to run our annual 1 mile chip timed event but yet again I was caught out by it coming around ‘suddenly!’ and another opportunity was gone. The weather wasn’t the best on the day but it certainly didn’t put the youngsters off and we enjoyed some spectacular efforts, mainly from local athletes. Edward Smyth, of City of Portsmouth Athletics Club took the ‘Junior Golden Mile’ honours in a very good time (considering the headwind) of 5 minutes and 41 seconds. The Senior event was won by another City of Portsmouth AC athlete, Joshua Goldfinch. He ran an impressive 4 min and 56 secs and doubled up by winning the Golden 5K in 18 minutes and 05 seconds, superb work by two of our rising stars. My son Harry will be particularly pleased with Edward’s result as he coached him for a short time when the Absolute Running sports shop was trading in Stoke Road. He always predicted big things for Ed and he may well be right.

Gosport Young Runners had a great turn out for the ‘Junior Mile’ and did their Head Coach, Victoria Wilson, proud. They displayed some pleasing personal performances, proving that Gosport has some talent in the junior ranks. We are blessed with Gosport having a wonderful facility in Stokes Bay and a perfectly flat mile of promenade on which to test ourselves. It’s no surprise that other coastal towns are now copying our lead and introducing their own versions of the ‘Golden Mile’, that most iconic of distances. We are also very lucky to have a supportive Council who allow us to use this public space and local businesses such as Bayside Cabin who help us make it happen. ‘Gosport Golden Mile’ is about community and getting people of all ages and abilities involved. It has played a huge part in getting people active and we want to continue building that legacy. If you are a business that wants to be involved in any way, please get in touch and we will happily discuss collaboration over a coffee. Meanwhile, enjoy summer whilst we have it. Be nice to our parks and open spaces and be proud of Gosport...it’s special. Next up for us will be the Gosport Beer Mile in September. This event sees 12 teams of 4 drinking a swift pint of locally brewed Fallen Acorn beer before racing the Golden Mile. Last year was great fun and I know this year will be too! You can join us on any Wednesday at Fallen Acorn Brewers in Mumby Road for a chatty, social 5K or a slightly more serious 60 minutes of running with The Breakfast Club every Sunday at 8am, starting at Bayside Cabin. We’re all about the fun, food and sometimes beer so what’s not to love? It’s Absolute Running...with a smile. Follow the shoe... HOME FOCUS

Home Focus

Outdoor Living Space is often a premium with homes nowadays. Driveways are a luxury and gardens are getting smaller. Utilising every piece of available space is becoming an artform in itself so as we look to how we can best use the area we have, it’s worth considering how we employ our outside space. Many American homes create additional living space on their front porch. Agreed the weather is often kinder than it is in the UK, but we do have times when we could readily enjoy a living space to the front of the house. If you think about it, most homes with front gardens are there simply for show. They generally serve very little purpose (apart from to allow parking space occasionally) and oftentimes become a chore to create something that is only enjoyed on the walk in through the front door. No matter how small the front of your house is, consider if you’re able to create an area of privacy, perhaps with some hedging or trellis, and pop out a couple of bistro chairs and a table, or a simple garden bench so that you can sit with a cup of tea and watch the world go by. If you are lucky to have more space, then a front porch with open sides and a roof (rather than the enclosed, boot-room style) could be a great use of space. Outdoor rugs and furniture are easy to come by nowadays which means that you can dress the area to suit the style of your house. The addition of a small table provides practical storage space for either a pretty plant or a solar light. In fact, solar lights come in so many shapes and sizes now that these are great additions to all gardens. You can add ones on strings, posts etc and by strategically placing them around the plot you can create a lovely atmosphere for those late, balmy evenings that you can enjoy in the summer. If you’d rather not sit out the front of your house then look to creating something similar

to a porch out the back instead of a traditional patio. By using folding doors which are flush to the height of your outside space, you can make the zones really flow

If you don’t mind lighting a little fire, then a firepit or chimnea can provide warmth on a summers evening. They’re also great for toasting marshmallows—an old seamlessly. It also makes carrying drinks and fashioned pastime perhaps but one which snacks outside so much easier as you don’t everyone enjoys.
