July is around the corner and ‘holiday’ season is about to start! Will you be enjoying a summer holiday or some time off over the school holidays? I hope so! Some people love active holidays like cycling or sailing, others like hedonism in the Med and lots enjoy nothing more than a British staycation, either at home or in some of the beautiful parts of our country. More recently we’ve swapped the location for our iced “sundowner” from a terrace bar in Ibiza watching the 20 somethings get down, to a view over the mini-disco as our kids throw shapes & make new “best” friends every night. It’s lovely to see the kids having care free fun but the icing on the cake is watching the dads get dragged up to take part as the mums enjoy a well-deserved 5 minute break and a chuckle! Whatever the summer has in store for you, a few days break can do wonders for your health and wellbeing but remember to be careful in the sunshine, particularly with your little ones. ‘Mum’s the Word’ on page 12 has some tips on selecting the best sun cream for your kids. If you’ve never read into this, it’s worth it! While the sun is out and we hit the parks and beaches more don’t forget to clean up after yourselves (and others if you can!) While doing your bit for the environment why not try to reduce your own waste too? If you are unsure where to start you can find some top tips on page 10. I hope you have a happy, healthy and hot start to the summer!

Zero-waste - How to get started...

Zero-waste! A term which is becoming prominent by the day but even to me, the owner of an Eco-Friendly and Zero waste store, it’s a term that can be scary. Here are some simple swaps to help get you started! Shampoo bars are a bit like soap bars but great for hair. Once wet, they foam up a little so you can wash your locks. They last 3x longer than the average bottle of shampoo and come in a range of costs and qualities. Most of the ones we sell in store are Vegan, SLS free, plastic free, paraben free and are made in the UK. Cost £2.59-£5.99 Bamboo tooth brush: ‘It’s just a tooth Brush’ said 5 billion people. These come with many options: size, bristle stiffness, tooth whitening bristles, colours and even for kids. The bristles are still nylon, so once finished you need to pull out them out and the remainder can be composted or used to label flowers. Personally I use them to clean around my sink or polish my jewelery. Budget: £2.99-£11.00+ The Ecoegg washing ball costs £12.99 and provides a year of clothes washing, what’s not to like? Plus you can buy refills! The egg is filled with detergent beads which aid clothes washing. You can also buy a stain remover and a detox tablet. Bigger sizes cost £24.99 for up to 3 years of washing. If you want to start cleaning your home in products that are better for the environment then the BIO-D range is for you. We offer all of their products in refills so you can save £’s and reuse your containers. The 5L refill containers are then reused by another local company. All vegan and made in the UK. Prices are about the same as your usual brands but you save money by using the refills. The list of swaps can go on so these are some small change suggestions to help get you started!

Mum’s the Word

Stay Sun Safe This Summer

Kids love being outdoors, so when the weather is in the height of summer, isn’t it great to get them off the iPad’s and out into the garden, parks or beaches! That said, I’ve become much more ‘sun aware’ since becoming a parent and not to mention daddy is a little on the pastey side!! ;-) When it comes to the kids, take extra care to protect babies and children. Their skin is much more sensitive to sun than adults, so don’t assume they can handle the summer in quite the same way! The top tips from the NHS are: • Children aged under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight. From March to October in the UK, children should: • Spend time in the shade – particularly from 11am to 3pm • Use sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher and protects against UVA and UVB paying particular attention to shoulders and the back of their necks. • Apply sunscreen to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet, and backs of hands. • Cover up with suitable clothing and wear a wide brim hat. • If swimming use a water resistant sunscreen. When it comes to choosing sunscreen, this is the bit that I found really interesting from the British Association of Dermatologists. UVA protection can also be indicated by the letters "UVA" in a circle, which indicates that it meets the EU standard. When you currently buy sunscreen containing UVA protection in the UK you may notice a UVA star rating on the packaging. The stars range from 0 to 5 and indicate the percentage of UVA radiation absorbed by the sunscreen in comparison to UVB, in other words the ratio between the level of protection afforded by the UVA protection and the UVB protection. Be aware that if you choose a low SPF it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing lots of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same. That’s why it’s important to choose a high SPF as well as a high UVA protection (e.g. a high number of stars). Sunscreens that offer both UVA and UVB protection are sometimes called ‘broad spectrum’. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars is generally considered as a good standard of sun protection in addition to shade and clothing. Be safe out there & have a great time too!

Library staff support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books.

A Delicious Party Idea

It’s about this time of year that I start to think about the kid’s Birthday parties. When I was little we would have jelly and ice cream, a few balloons and the radio turned on! In current times there’s more and more pressure on parents to think of new and original ideas, invest in decorations and go that extra mile. This can be time consuming and costly! Then I stumbled across ‘Kestrels Cakery’. Not only is this a fantastic tea rooms serving hot and cold snacks, drinks and amazing home made cakes (including gluten and dairy free) but I was delighted to find that they offer children’s parties too! What a great idea to leave the hard work to someone else! Kestrels love accomodating their younger guests and provide a full range of children’s parties from afternoon teas (where the children receive their own cake stands and beautiful china tea sets) to cupcake decorating or crafts! You can even have sole use! Or if you would rather do it at home, they provide an afternoon tea home delivery service. Kestrels Cakery was opened almost five years ago by Janice Garrard following a long career in the Civil Service. She now runs the ‘cakery’ as well as specialising in bespoke wedding/celebration cakes and cupcakes made to order. If you would like any further information please contact Janice on 07803 268951 13

Crofton Parish

THE HOLY SPIRIT – ‘UNSEEN AS THE WIND, GENTLE AS IS THE DOVE’ By the time you are reading this Christians around the world will have celebrated Pentecost - what many people used to call Whitsun. This is a Sunday in the Church’s calendar when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples as recorded in Acts chapter 2. It was an amazing and dramatic occasion with the sound of rushing wind, tongues of fire and many strange languages being spoken. Hundreds of people from all over the known world, and in Jerusalem for the festival, heard the praises of God in their own native tongue. Often called the birthday of the church, this remarkable event has sometimes been described as the day when ‘God set the Church on fire and the whole world came to see the blaze’, for within a very short time the Christian faith had spread right across the Mediterranean and believers were meeting and worshipping Jesus throughout the Roman Empire. Today, God the Holy Spirit continues to be at work in our lives and communities bringing renewal, healing and transformation. Sometimes, like the Day of Pentecost, His work is dramatic and immediate with all kinds of signs, wonders and powerful manifestations; other times the work of the Spirit is almost imperceptible as He brings forth new life and growing fruitfulness. One place in Crofton Parish where this has been the case, is in the

worshipping life at St Edmund’s, that picturesque and ancient church, sited just off the main Titchfield Road. Steeped in prayer and history, this lovely old building faced an uncertain future in the early 1980s when the PCC considered making it redundant. However, through the work of a committed visionary group of volunteers, led by Brian and Janet Newman and others, plans were put into operation to save this ‘ancient local treasure’. Known as Friends of Crofton Old Church, this august body of people have raised literally hundreds of thousands of pounds to carry out important repairs and improvements. Alongside these renovations; there have also been changes to services from a single monthly 8am Prayer Book Communion in the summer months only to a weekly service attracting around sixty or more people, with coffee and refreshments served afterwards. Whilst some services are from the Prayer Book, others are more contemporary. However, they all have a common ethos of being quiet and reflective with familiar prayers and traditional hymns. It is an opportunity to step out of the busyness of the world and spend time in the presence of God. Having worshipped in Crofton Parish for more than 40 years, I have witnessed over that time the gentle and renewing work of the Holy Spirit transforming St Edmund’s from a place where there was once an occasionally service into a

loving, caring and vibrant community where everyone is guaranteed a warm welcome. Besides, Sunday worship, there are also summer discussion groups, open days and various social events organised by the ‘Friends’ where folk can get to know one another and feel a sense of belonging. There is a hymn, sung to the tune of the Skye Boat Song, which goes, ‘Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove’. I think this describes very well God’s living, loving presence amongst the congregation at St Edmund’s over many, many years. If you would like to know more, or to join us one Sunday morning for worship, why not visit our parish website: www.croftonparish.org.uk or the FOCOC website: www.fococ.co.uk

Home Focus

HOME FOCUS The devil’s in the detail Sometimes it’s just the smallest of details that can really make or break the design of a home. Whether it’s the crispness of the paintwork, fastidious cleaning so that mirrors shine and skirting boards are dusted, there are quite a few things you can do to achieve a quality finish in your home that doesn’t cost the earth. 1.

Less is more

Take a look at how many decorative items you have out on display and consider whether they could be organised differently, or reduced. Rather than having lots of cherished items on the side, pick only two or three and let the space around them highlight their importance. Think of this a little bit like a beautiful plant in the garden - if it was crowded out by bushes and trees you up the photos will look so much better and wouldn’t see it properly to enjoy it. Co-ordinate your colours

Try and avoid too many colours in your room (unless you are purposely going for a bright and rainbow feel). Stick to a palette of two or three colours at the most and you can more easily co-ordinate your soft furnishings and accessories around your more expensive items such as your carpet or sofa. By only using a couple of colours, or tones of one colour, you’ll encourage a feeling of seamlessness across the space and indeed if you follow this through around the house it’ll create a style that’s cohesive and calm.

ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF YOUR LABOUR Ideas to help you enjoy your garden when you’re not busy working in it.

Not every day should be given up toiling over herb beds or borders. Whilst there are always a myriad of jobs to do in the garden, whether it’s a big or small plot, surely the point of having some outside space is to settle in occasionally, and enjoy the fruits of your labour?

A bug bear of mine is that once you take off covers and perhaps wish to add extra cushions, there is no storage for them to be put away again. Consider some garden trunks which come in both wood or plastic versions and ensure that they are water tight. If your cushions are designed for outdoor use they should cope well with storage of this kind and it means that you don’t spend the first 10 minutes or so of your precious down time faffing about with walking back and forth to the shed / indoor cupboard with the little luxuries to make your time with your book (or gin and tonic) a bit of a work up.

Keep on Running The Breakfast Club Charity 10k Has your summer kicked off yet? We’ve had some glorious bank holiday weekends haven’t we? When the sun comes out, we tend to be out and about more. Occasionally we stumble upon local attractions that we either hadn’t heard of, or simply hadn’t got around to visiting. In Gosport we are blessed with being steeped in history, military and otherwise. I wonder how many locals are yet to discover Explosion Museum, HMS Alliance and the Royal Navy Submarine Museum or even the Diving Museum at Stokes Bay? We’ve been using some of our spare time to put together a little charity 10K where 100 people paid £5 for the privilege of running the 6.2 Miles in aid of The First Light Trust. The First Light Trust look after blue light service and armed forces veterans who find themselves in need for a variety of reasons. They have a shop in Gosport High Street which always offers a warm welcome, is open to anyone but offers discounts to ex-service men and women on production of their service number. You may remember me mentioning before that each year our social running groups ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘545 RunClub’ nominate a 24

charity to support and raise funds for over a 12-month period. Monies are raised through organised events and t-shirt sales. Nominations for a charity to support for the next 12 months have been made and the votes have been counted. From the 1st June, we will be supporting the Leesland School Swimming Pool fund. This pool is where a lot of local youngsters learn how to stay safe around water. Next year’s Charity 10K is already in the planning stage, keep your eyes peeled for more information which will be posted on our social media platforms but primarily the Absolute GosVegas Instagram account. With so many people getting involved with exercise and being fitter, there’s never been a better time to get involved. Local business continues to grow after 50 years! It’s exciting times for The HVR Garages Group as they open a new branch ‘Solent Airport MOTs’ this month in Daedalus Park. HVR Garages is the group name of 4 local garages which also includes Elkins Motors, Stubbington Motors and Locks Heath Motors.

Established in 1969 in Grove Road, Lee on the Solent, this family business has grown on local, repeat business and recommendations. Dean Gregory who oversees the running of all the garages comments,

“It’s lovely to be back in Lee after starting here 50 years ago” In those 50 years this family run business has moved with the times and vehicle advances and built a committed team of staff. Together they help run all four branches of vehicle workshops and MOT stations. Many of the fully qualified technicians have been trained within the company from apprentice level, proving they are happy, well managed workshops, with minimal staff turnaround.

and models, including specialising in auto electrics and modern petrol and diesel diagnostics with up-todate and cutting-edge diagnostic equipment.
