Here we are, fast approaching July and in this gorgeous weather we realise how lucky we are to live so close to the beach. As a family we often visit the splash park on Stokes Bay, the park on Lee seafront or have a fish and chip supper on the pebbles together. There are so many reasons to enjoy the beach, running, cycling, playing, walking the dog or even just for an ice cream! I m pretty sure we are all visiting the beach much more in these warmer months. On a recent trip to the beach it got me thinking about the newly launched anti plastic campaign which has commenced in a bid to halt the pollution of the world s oceans and rivers. Did you know that locally we have our very own super hero fighting for this cause? Beach Clean Girl has been cleaning the beaches at Lee on Solent and the surrounding areas for just over a year and you will be shocked to hear that 221 recorded beach clean days later she has just gone past the half tonne mark! All her finds are sorted, recycled where possible, cleaned where appropriate and donated to local charities. She is hoping to inspire others to get their own litter pickers or take a bag to the beach and collect some rubbish. Across the page is a picture of a typical find for Beach Clean Girl (visit her facebook and Instagram pages) many of these items are small enough to be eaten by birds and marine life and it is estimated that there are 150m tonnes of plastic in the worlds oceans and over 100,000 mammals die as a direct result of this. So next time you are enjoying the beach, remember to take your litter home (and a bit more if you can) and please help Beach Clean Girl , because even superheroes have real life jobs!

Keep on Running.. Let me introduce you to the local couple who, with other volunteers, bring joy to lots of youngsters and their parents every Sunday. Maggie & Paul Atkinson are the founders of the Gosport Junior Parkrun. Just like the adult version the Junior Parkrun has proven to be a phenomenon. What have they got to say about it? Where does the time go? Stokes Bay Junior Parkrun celebrated it s 1st birthday on the 3rd June! What a year it has been, we have met some lovely and some amazing children. Crofton Parish

WELCOME THE GREENFIELDS We are delighted to be welcoming new additions to the Clergy Team of Crofton Parish this summer. Jude and Dan Greenfield will be joining us in July 2018 as our new Curates. What s a Curate, you may ask? All Church of England clergy serve as Curates for 3-4 years after their initial training before going off to be Vicars or Chaplains or into some other form of ministry. I am so pleased that Dan and Jude will be joining us in Crofton as our new Curates. Many of you will remember our recent Curate, Steve Marsh and before Steve there was Kate McFarlane. Both Steve and Kate added so much to parish and community life and I know we ll appreciate having Jude & Dan with us. The Greenfields come from Winchester where they ve been working for Christ Church, a large Anglican church in the city centre. They ve previously worked in Sheffield and spent a year travelling the world. When you bump into them, you may want to ask them about their experiences living in Australia and 20

Peru. Jude and Dan have a young daughter and are looking forward to getting involved with Crofton Parish s work across all ages, including with other young families. It s becoming more common for married couples to share ordained ministry together. Both Dan and Jude will be ordained at Portsmouth Cathedral at the end of June. It s good that as a Parish we re able to offer an environment that will work well for a married couple starting out on the journey of Anglican ordained ministry together. The breadth of our Sunday services across St Edmund s and Holy Rood, as well as the large number of thriving groups that we have serving our community, make Crofton Parish a good place for anyone to serve a Curacy. So, if you see Jude and Dan around, do say hi. They ll appreciate getting to know members of our community. Over the next few years, they will become familiar faces to us here in Crofton Parish, so let s give them a warm welcome!
