ife is a beach

S m a l l t a l k ..

Here we are, fast approaching July and in this gorgeous weather we realise how lucky we are to live so close to the beach. As a family we often visit the splash park on Stokes Bay, the park on Lee seafront or have a fish and chip supper on the pebbles together. There are so many reasons to enjoy the beach, running, cycling, playing, walking the dog or even just for an ice cream! I m pretty sure we are all visiting the beach much more in these warmer months. On a recent trip to the beach it got me thinking about the newly launched anti plastic campaign which has commenced in a bid to halt the pollution of the world s oceans and rivers. Did you know that locally we have our very own super hero fighting for this cause? Beach Clean Girl has been cleaning the beaches at Lee on Solent and the surrounding areas for just over a year and you will be shocked to hear that 221 recorded beach clean days later she has just gone past the half tonne mark! All her finds are sorted, recycled where possible, cleaned where appropriate and donated to local charities. She is hoping to inspire others to get their own litter pickers or take a bag to the beach and collect some rubbish. Across the page is a picture of a typical find for Beach Clean Girl (visit her facebook and Instagram pages) many of these items are small enough to be eaten by birds and marine life and it is estimated that there are 150m tonnes of plastic in the worlds oceans and over 100,000 mammals die as a direct result of this. So next time you are enjoying the beach, remember to take your litter home (and a bit more if you can) and please help Beach Clean Girl , because even superheroes have real life jobs!

Keep on Running.. Let me introduce you to the local couple who, with other volunteers, bring joy to lots of youngsters and their parents every Sunday. Maggie & Paul Atkinson are the founders of the Gosport Junior Parkrun. Just like the adult version the Junior Parkrun has proven to be a phenomenon. What have they got to say about it? Where does the time go? Stokes Bay Junior Parkrun celebrated it s 1st birthday on the 3rd June! What a year it has been, we have met some lovely and some amazing children. The event has taken place in rain, sun and even snow! We used our B route and ran on the grass, the children and parents said how much they enjoyed it, it s all about getting out there in all weathers and having fun! 819 different children have run Stokes Bay Junior Parkrun, what an amazing statistic! Imagine if they all turned up to run on the same day! In total they have ran 8400km, which is the equivalent of running from Stokes Bay to Las Vegas! We average 17 different volunteers each week, who all don the hi-vis to ensure the children are safe on the course and get a timed run. Stokes Bay Junior Parkrun is a FREE 2km event for junior runners of all standards and takes place

12

Junior Parkrun - Gosport every Sunday at 9:00am on Stokes Bay Promenade, Pebble Beach, Stokes Bay Road, Gosport, PO12 2BL. The 2k timed run can be whatever you want it to be, whether for fun or as part of a training plan. It offers an opportunity for all the family to get involved and come together on a regular basis to enjoy the beautiful promenade. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking part is easy – just register in advance before your first ever parkrun. You will be issued an individual barcode which can then be used for this weekly 2k run or on any of the weekly 5k parkruns around the country. The Junior Parkrun is a great way to get involved and introduce yourselves to a sport without any of the normal outside pressures. A great way to improve health, confidence and to enjoy a great location. It can also be part of getting fit for sport for your school or to train for a specific target such

as the Mini-Marathon trials or for a full 5k parkrun distance. In short, you are welcome to come along and have fun. Maggie & Paul Atkinson, founders of Junior Parkrun

St Mary s Church

A CHURCH FOR ALL AGES! I first came to St Mary s last summer when my husband moved with the Navy. I wanted to find somewhere my kids would be welcomed and where I could find a community to belong to. I was welcomed by kind people, there was coffee and even a pain au chocolat to enjoy during the service, the atmosphere was relaxed, the kids joined in and there were lots of other young families enjoying this modern worship. I instantly felt at home! Church Alive (on a Sunday) also gave me the chance for a lie in still as it starts at 10.45am, so it soon became part of our normal routine! I was appointed the Families Minister in March this year, here is a little taste of what we have going on for families in our community: There are two friendly toddler groups with a lovely welcoming atmosphere and the chance to meet new friends. Enjoy free play, a snack, stories and songs for just £2! Mondays, 1.15pm -2.45pm at St Mary s Parish Centre and Tuesdays, 10am - 11.30am at St Francis, Clayhall Rd. Come and join us for Messy Church! There is always plenty of arts, crafts and games to get involved with. My children love this as it finishes with them having tea with all their friends, it feels like a monthly party! The next on is Thursday 28th June 3.30pm – 5.45pm. There will be a break over the summer, but Messy Church will be back on Thursday 27th September. For school years 6-9, we have a youth group that meet every 3 weeks on a Saturday night from 6.30pm – 8pm at the Parish Centre. We play a variety of games and enjoy a snack. The next date is 30th June where we will be taking advantage of the garden for volleyball, cricket and other outside games. Our end of term family event will be a big BBQ & water fight at the Rectory (down by the creek) on Saturday 14th July. Over the next year we are looking to do more to help families be confident when talking about faith with their kids. Many of us have made promises as parents or Godparents at Christenings to do this and yet it s not that easy! 20

We are starting a Parenting for Faith course which is to help parents, Godparents, grandparents or anyone who regularly spends time with children to think about how they can practically help children explore & live out their faith. In the autumn we will be hosting an Alpha course especially for young people and parents to explore issues of faith together. So if you aren t sure how to answer your kids questions and want a chance to take time out and think about these things together, this could be a good opportunity to do so in a friendly, safe environment. Do get in touch If you would like more information on any of the above activities or if you have an idea of something we can do to support families here in Alverstoke, we would love to hear from you!
