Sean and I make a point of never watching the news. Actually that’s not strictly true. We just don’t go out of our way to make the time for it. We don’t often watch TV and my radio consumption extends mostly to Radio 4 for the Archers and Women’s Hour. (I’ve always worked on the theory that one’s radio station is dictated by the decade of one’s years. You go up a radio station every 10 years or so!) When, in past lives, we did make time for that (and soaps, and other programmes that just don’t fit into our worlds any more) we would come away with the feeling that we were too small to make a difference; that world events couldn’t be changed by us and therefore we’d be left feeling miserable for whatever miserableness was being reported, and helpless to do anything about it. Sad stories seem to make good news stories, not positive ones and it’s better to remove negative influences wherever possible. We prefer to see what’s going on in our own radius - who needs our help locally or just tending to our little patch of the world to make it cleaner and nicer. We certainly don’t do enough in this regard by any means but our feeling is that if we can keep chipping away at our list of jobs (the garden fence, maybe the bank by the river over the road) and continue to support and guide our children then we’re making a small, but valuable contribution to our own society. Most importantly, there are people within our communities whose own ‘news’ is devastating and they certainly don’t need to see more of it on the TV. Whether it’s the power of social media or whether there’s something “in the air” at the moment it feels as though there are many beautiful souls leaving the world for a new journey so we just wanted to say to those who have lost special people recently that we’re thinking of you. Until next month, Much love

Coralie and Sean

Communit y Supportive Friendships are so important For nearly thirty five years the Good Companions groups have been providing friendship and entertainment for the elderly and lonely people of the village. Originally there were three groups running because of the great demand, but for most of these thirty five years there have only been Good Companions 1 and Good Companions 2. The first group was led by the late Sybil Benoy, with a team of helpers, who organised it for over thirty years. She was still cooking Val Wadham (left) with Parish the Christmas meal for the club administrator, Sue Martin when she was approaching ninety years old. ABSOLUTE RUNNING

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY Well, a lot of fuss has been made over the decision by Stoke Gifford Council to charge parkrun UK for the privilege of running through their local community park every Saturday. Whilst to many it seems unnecessary, belligerent and greedy it undoubtedly misses the whole point of parkrun which is that it encourages whole families to become active and brings all parts of a community together, if only for one hour every Saturday.

phenomenon on their doorstep or even councils who quietly benefit from car parking charges. Sports retailers also enjoy increased footfall as these new runners look to enhance their kit and gadgets. But the most obvious testimony to how effective this movement has been in bringing communities together came on Saturday 30th April at Lee On The Solent.

record 485 runners whilst the promenade became a sea of colour as inter club rivalries were put to bed for one glorious celebration of achievement. Now that has got to be worthwhile right? Worth an hour of anyone’s weekend….AND for the most part, it is completely free to all. We are very lucky locally in that car parking charges don’t apply until 10am so it’s only those that wish to enjoy the local shops and cafes post run that are expected to pay a nominal fee but hey, fresh air, exercise and meeting friends is a fair swap right?

At 9am , the usual gathering of 250 plus runners began arriving at the There have always been those for briefing area adjacent to the whom the weekly ‘invasion’ of amusement arcade but on this day, weekend warriors is too much to the numbers kept growing. Hearing Dogs for deaf people Sponsored walk by Southampton City College Students On Saturday 18th March, 12 walkers comprising of 10 students and two Hearing Dog supporters, set off from Mansbridge, West End, Southampton, accompanied by Mark Pegg and Hearing Dog “Erin”, to walk the “Itchen Way” a 10 mile route from Southampton to Winchester. Each paid £3 as an entry fee and some raised additional funds by sponsorship and on completion they all received a metal Hearing Dog Badge. The weather was kind, cool but dry and they all managed to complete the walk in under 5 hours, most of the students then opted to do the return walk to Southampton (they must be mad!). Three other members of SHHD saw them off from Mansbridge and “leap frogged” along the route by car to meet the walkers at different points to offer support, ending up at St Catherine’s Hill, Winchester as the finish post to welcome them in and offer congratulations. A total

24

of £66 was raised and this will be added to all the other fundraising events held by the college, to give a final grand total. Well done to all who took part!! Fund Raised by Solent University In January Solent University held a ‘Puppy Room’ where the students queued up to meet our wonderful Hearing Dogs and puppies. There were charged £1 to get in and have chat with the socialisers and recipients about their HD. This is a brilliant way to meet them and all of students that queued up manage to see them. We were on the third floor and the queue went down to the ground floor. This will be happening again in June/July before their end of term as others had not had the chance yet. They raised £700. If you would like to do something like this at your college/universities – contact Kim Harbut – Event Co-ordinator - see our website for contact.
