eadlines, in a way, are what mislead you because bad news is a headline… ... and gradual improvement is not, said Bill Gates.

Sean and I make a point of never watching the news. Actually that’s not strictly true. We just don’t go out of our way to make the time for it. We don’t often watch TV and my radio consumption extends mostly to Radio 4 for the Archers and Women’s Hour. (I’ve always worked on the theory that one’s radio station is dictated by the decade of one’s years. You go up a radio station every 10 years or so!) When, in past lives, we did make time for that (and soaps, and other programmes that just don’t fit into our worlds any more) we would come away with the feeling that we were too small to make a difference; that world events couldn’t be changed by us and therefore we’d be left feeling miserable for whatever miserableness was being reported, and helpless to do anything about it. Sad stories seem to make good news stories, not positive ones and it’s better to remove negative influences wherever possible. We prefer to see what’s going on in our own radius - who needs our help locally or just tending to our little patch of the world to make it cleaner and nicer. We certainly don’t do enough in this regard by any means but our feeling is that if we can keep chipping away at our list of jobs (the garden fence, maybe the bank by the river over the road) and continue to support and guide our children then we’re making a small, but valuable contribution to our own society. Most importantly, there are people within our communities whose own ‘news’ is devastating and they certainly don’t need to see more of it on the TV. Whether it’s the power of social media or whether there’s something “in the air” at the moment it feels as though there are many beautiful souls leaving the world for a new journey so we just wanted to say to those who have lost special people recently that we’re thinking of you. Until next month, Much love

Coralie and Sean x

St Fait h’s Community

A party to celebrate…. I have many happy memories of the first summer fete I remember attending at the age of four or five in my hometown, Yeovil, back in the 1940s. It was a gloriously hot summer’s day with not a cloud in the sky, as all days seem to be in childhood memories. Of the many attractions on display, one in particular caught my eye. I desperately wanted to win a small plastic chicken on the hoopla stall which laid eggs when its body was pushed down on to its retractable legs. Needless to say my wooden hoops landed everywhere except over the chicken. It was only out of the kindness of her heart that, after several unsuccessful attempts, the lady on the stall took pity on my plight and eventually gave it to me.

The celebrations for the whole Lee community will begin with a special service in the church at 11 am. The party will follow from 12 noon. So that everyone can eat together, tables will be placed around a central performance area in which musicians and others will entertain the crowds. Food and drink including cakes, sandwiches, a BBQ, soft drinks and beer will be available for sale or, if you prefer, you can bring along your own picnic lunch. The cutting of a specially made Celebration Cake, decorated in red, white and blue, will take place at 2 pm no doubt to a rousing chorus of The National Anthem.

As in previous years there will be a variety of stalls and entertainments. The stalls Once again the fete season will soon be will include books for adults and children, upon us but this year’s fete at St Faith’s greeting cards and stationery, mixed church will be different from previous crafts, jewellery, old coins from the time years in at least two ways: firstly the of Queen Victoria onwards and more. name and secondly the day. Among the entertainments and demonstrations there will be a coconut Because it will be linked to the Queen’s shy, traditional races (egg & spoon and 90th birthday celebrations, rather than sack), Zumba Gold and (hopefully) Line calling it ‘St Faith’s Summer Fete’ it will be Dancing, a Keep-Fit demonstration, called ‘A Party to Celebrate the Queen’s singing to sign language with the Fareham 90th Birthday’ and the aim is to give the ‘SIGNalong’ group and a fashion show occasion a distinct ‘party feel.’ The other organised by our local charity shops. difference is that, instead of being held on Children will be able to enjoy themselves a Saturday as in previous years, this year’s on the bouncy castle and slide and receive event will be held Sunday, June 12. training from Gosport BMX bikes. And, as mementos of a great day out, a badge-

making machine will be printing out celebration badges for the children to keep. It goes without saying that much will depend upon the weather but there will be a wet-weather plan so please come for all or part the day, whatever the weather! Everyone is welcome and, with any luck, it could turn out to be a gloriously hot, summer’s day without a cloud in the sky, just as it was when I went to my first Fete. And (who knows?) there might even be a hoopla stall with a plastic, egg-laying chicken as a prize. I can always hope..

Diary dates Sunday June 12th: A Party to Celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday (details in the article above) July 1st – 9th: Lee Festival of the Arts – Seven days of entertainment – see leefestivalofthearts.org.uk and click on ‘plan your visit’ for details of events, times and venues.’ St Faith’s Sunday Services: 8 am communion (BCP), 9.30 am Eucharist, Sundays@11 (all-age interactive service) and 6 pm (Evening Prayer).
