eadlines, in a way, are what mislead you because bad news is a headline… ... and gradual improvement is not, said Bill Gates.

Sean and I make a point of never watching the news. Actually that’s not strictly true. We just don’t go out of our way to make the time for it. We don’t often watch TV and my radio consumption extends mostly to Radio 4 for the Archers and Women’s Hour. (I’ve always worked on the theory that one’s radio station is dictated by the decade of one’s years. You go up a radio station every 10 years or so!) When, in past lives, we did make time for that (and soaps, and other programmes that just don’t fit into our worlds any more) we would come away with the feeling that we were too small to make a difference; that world events couldn’t be changed by us and therefore we’d be left feeling miserable for whatever miserableness was being reported, and helpless to do anything about it. Sad stories seem to make good news stories, not positive ones and it’s better to remove negative influences wherever possible. We prefer to see what’s going on in our own radius - who needs our help locally or just tending to our little patch of the world to make it cleaner and nicer. We certainly don’t do enough in this regard by any means but our feeling is that if we can keep chipping away at our list of jobs (the garden fence, maybe the bank by the river over the road) and continue to support and guide our children then we’re making a small, but valuable contribution to our own society. Most importantly, there are people within our communities whose own ‘news’ is devastating and they certainly don’t need to see more of it on the TV. Whether it’s the power of social media or whether there’s something “in the air” at the moment it feels as though there are many beautiful souls leaving the world for a new journey so we just wanted to say to those who have lost special people recently that we’re thinking of you. Until next month, Much love

Coralie and Sean x

Life Matters at St Mary’s

PLEASE COME TO OUR PARTY! This year seems to be providing a more than usually rich crop of Commemorations. Within the past few weeks we have celebrated the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen and the 400th Anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, and across the harbour the Historic Dockyard is gearing up for a blockbuster exhibition to mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, the last great Combined Fleet naval battle. Queen Elizabeth II became our oldest monarch in 2007, when she overtook her great-great grandmother Victoria, and on 9th September last year she passed Victoria’s record to become the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Here in Alverstoke Parish, our team of bell-ringers celebrated the Royal Birthday in a centuries-old, truly English fashion of which Shakespeare would have approved - with the ringing of a full peal. This involved an enormous amount of rehearsal and 8

preparation and, on the day, similar amounts of effort and concentration. Over a period of 2 hours 50 minutes of continuous ringing they changed the sequence of the bells 5024 times, in a pattern called Yorkshire Surprise Major. Change ringing originated in this country, and has spread all over the world. We are very proud of our own team, whose weekly contribution to Sunday worship is greatly valued, and we congratulate them on their latest achievement. The peal is not our only Royal Birthday event. On the Queen’s official birthday weekend, on Sunday 12 June, in common with communities all over Britain, we will be holding a Street Party around the tree in the village square. You are cordially invited to come along and join us. We will be providing the tables and chairs, bunting and musical entertainment. You need to provide your own lunch and bring your family

and friends. There will be prizes for the best Royal Birthday themed headwear. In 2012 we held a similar event for the Queen’s Jubilee, and a great time was had by all. PLEASE COME TO THE PARTY - 12 3pm, no tickets required, nothing to pay, just come along and celebrate!

Carbon monoxide poisoning kills an estimated 30-50 people each year in the UK, and many more are injured or become seriously ill from un-knowingly inhaling this colourless and odourless gas. You can help keep your family and home safe by installing a carbon monoxide alarm, and ensuring it's in the right place. This will alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide in your home. Make sure you pick an alarm with an audible alert, rather than a detector with just a coloured indicator. They cost around £15—£20 and available at DIY stores.

Hearing Dogs for deaf people Sponsored walk by Southampton City College Students On Saturday 18th March, 12 walkers comprising of 10 students and two Hearing Dog supporters, set off from Mansbridge, West End, Southampton, accompanied by Mark Pegg and Hearing Dog “Erin”, to walk the “Itchen Way” a 10 mile route from Southampton to Winchester. hours, most of the students then opted to do the return walk to Each paid £3 as an entry fee and Southampton (they must be some raised additional funds by mad!). sponsorship and on completion they all received a metal Hearing Three other members of SHHD Dog Badge. saw them off from Mansbridge and “leap frogged” along the The weather was kind, cool but route by car to meet the walkers dry and they all managed to at different points to offer complete the walk in under 5 support, ending up at St Catherine’s Hill, Winchester as the finish post to welcome them in and offer congratulations. A total of £66 was raised and this will be added to all the other fundraising events held by the college, to give a final grand total. Well done to all who took part!!

Fund Raised by Solent University In January Solent University held a ‘Puppy Room’ where the students queued up to meet our wonderful Hearing Dogs and puppies. There were charged £1 to get in and have chat with the socialisers and recipients about their HD. This is a brilliant way to meet them and all of students that queued up manage to see them. We were on the third floor and the queue went down to the ground floor. This will be happening again in June/July before their end of term as others had not had the chance yet. They raised £700. If you would like to do something like this at your college/ universities – contact Kim Harbut – Event Co-ordinator - see our website for contact.
