Why? Because there are two bank holidays for a start! Who doesn’t love a long weekend off work, especially in May when the weather is starting to warm up! It’s about this time of year that as a family we start our ‘fish and chip Fridays’ down the beach. A quick walk to the local chippie and dinner on the beach, sometimes followed by an ice cream is the perfect way to finish a busy week at work or school. So much happens down on the waterside in the summer time we seem to forget how lovely it is in the colder months. My children can’t wait for the Splash Park to re-open on Stokes Bay and they are very excited to see what the new one in Lee will be like. As the weather warms up and you throw open the doors to let the fresh air in, you may start to think it is time to give the garden some TLC! Lucky for you there are some great businesses inside this lovely glossy mag that can help you. From big landscaping projects to smaller ‘tidy-up’ jobs, have a look through and give them a call. If you want to get out there and do it yourself, there’s the monthly ‘Watering and Wellies’ article to give you some hints and tips. We, however, are still working on the inside of our home and the final project is the bathroom! (why o why did we leave that to the end!!) It will commence in the next couple of weeks and although we are excited to finally finish the last room, as I look around the house I’m starting to see what needs decorating again! Does it ever end? I may just stay in the garden, with a G&T in the sun (fingers crossed!) and ignore it for a little while…

Get Crafty! FAIRY GARDEN

There’s something so satisfying about crafting at home. Whether you’re making cards for loved ones, gifts for friends or just something delicious for yourself. Children love crafting, so here’s another idea to try with them at home 1. Making a beautiful fairy garden needn’t be too challenging. Choose a smallish garden pot, a terracotta one will work fine. Fill it with some compost up to the top.

WHAT YOU NEED:

* Plant pot (plastic or terracotta) or a wooden barrel 2. Plant your chosen plants into the corners and allow room for * Small plants such as trailing lobelia, and other container or rockery plants. them to spread. * Fairy garden furniture of choice. This can be ordered online or why 3. You can fill any gaps with not try to recycle some old small pebbles. toys/dolls house furniture

4. Position your chosen ornaments and sit back and enjoy the magic!

MY MONTH AS A MUM By the time you guys read this, the Easter holidays will be drawing to a close but I wanted to share with you a new Easter tradition we created this year. If you are a follower of the ‘Small Talk’ (found at the beginning of the mag) you will know that I’m a huge fan of family traditions and memory making. When a friend mentioned ‘egg rolling’ to me, I had to give it a try! It’s so simple and best of all its practically free! We boiled up 4 eggs, decorated them with Sharpies and headed up Butser Hill. I’d like to say we didn’t spend an hour wandering around fields filled with sheep and cow poo looking for a perfect spot, but we did! After a few moans from the kids and my husband, we took our positions and released our eggs! They bounced down the hill, with bits of egg shell flying everywhere. Amelia’s stopped on a ledge suddenly half way and Judes rolled the furthest. The kids loved it and had a few more turns together and didn’t stop till the eggs were practically scrambled! Try it with your bunch, no need to wait for Easter! 13

I JUST WANT TO BE A CREME EGG! The season of Easter seems to begin earlier and earlier each year and sometimes Easter Eggs begin to appear in the supermarkets even before Lent. For what seems like months the chocolate Easter eggs of varying sizes and prices line the shelves ready for us to pop into our trolleys as we pass by. Most major confectioners are represented, each box containing, besides the egg, a chocolate bar or two or a packet of sweets, all intended to promote the product even further. Eggs have long been associated with Easter and are wonderful signs of new life and fresh beginnings. Originally, they were painted hens’ eggs. The chocolate varieties first began to appear in France and Germany in the early 19th century, shortly after a suitable eating chocolate had been

invented. Initially they were solid and it wasn’t until 1875 that the first Easter egg, as we are now accustomed, was produced in Britain after developments in manufacturing allowed molten chocolate to be poured into a mould. At first, they were dark chocolate, filled with sugared almonds and decorated on the outside with chocolate piping and marzipan flowers. Milk chocolate eggs were introduced in 1905, with sales increasing so dramatically that they quickly became a seasonal best seller. Today, we can no longer think about Easter without Easter eggs and like the decorated hen’s eggs of the Middle Ages, they still remind us of that first Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead and appeared, first to Mary Magdalene, and later to his disciples. Moreover, the hollow egg is a powerful symbol of the empty tomb. When the women and the disciples visited the grave, they found Jesus’ body had gone

and angels announcing that he was no longer there but had risen!

in Christ offers us a new life by filling us with his living, loving presence.

Easter eggs continue to speak to us of the Easter miracle and although they come in many varieties, they are all essentially the same – a lovely looking and attractive shell with a hollow centre. In many ways, we can be a bit like an Easter egg, with lives that can appear wonderfully attractive, and sometimes enviable to those on the outside but on the inside, if we are honest, we feel a bit empty and hollow, as if something were missing. That’s because each of us was created with a spiritual hole that only God can truly fill. Through Jesus’ death on the cross and his rising again, something of cosmic significance occurred, which has both altered the course of human history and can change us in the present. The Easter story is one in which we can know God personally, deal with our past mistakes and experience a fresh start, knowing that the risen Jesus is always with us. We need no longer be like a traditional Easter egg, hollow on the inside but more like the ones with the yummy, creamy centres. At Easter, God

If you would like to know more, why not come to an Easter service at a church near you. In Crofton Parish we begin Easter Sunday with a short service on the beach at 6am with bacon butties afterwards and end with a celebration at 6.30pm. For details of all our services, both at St Edmund’s and Holy Rood, visit our website. www.coftonparish.org.uk

Home Focus

HOME FOCUS Conquer the Clutter

One of the keys to a beautiful home is seamless storage and organisation, ensuring that everything has a place, and that everyone knows how the home operates. Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than spending time and money styling up your home to find that on a practical level it doesn’t work because you haven’t thought through where your day to day ‘stuff’ should live. Show homes are often guilty of smudging over the practicalities of life in favour of style. They design the space with gorgeous accessories and furnishings, but neglect the small, but hugely necessary requirement to store your hoover. Or they place a lovely ottoman at the end of the bed together with a TV on the wall but no-where in site is anything that resembles a wardrobe. But fear not! Here are some tips to get your home functioning beautifully and with great style. 1.

Declutter

Imagine you are about to move house. (It’s good to get into this mindset because it helps you to be really ruthless). Tackle one part of a room at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Go through your belongings and think about whether you really, really need the ‘thing’. Whether you adopt the fashionable Konmari method, or simply create three piles - keep, bin and charity - you can quickly filter your belongings and get them down to a manageable amount. Once you have less it’s far easier to find suitable storage solutions. 2.

Act on the declutter

It’s really easy, once you’ve gone through the above exercise, to leave the bin bags or boxes in a bit pile in the hallway and then not quite get round to moving them. Do this part immediately otherwise before you know it,

Watering and Wellies

SELF CONTAINED How to use pots and planters in your

garden to your advantage

Whether you have an acreage or a balcony, using containers in your garden can be a hugely practical, or cosmetic step and can transform your green space in a way that (in my opinion), no other garden ‘accessory’ can.

From a practical point of view, if you are limited on outside space, container gardening is perfect if you want to grow your own produce. Carrots and tomatoes will generally thrive happily in a grow bag or pot that has enough depth for the carrot to plough down, and if you have some canes or similar, tomatoes will wind their way up them and fill the air with that beautiful smell that only a tomato plant can throw off.

Keep on Running

Running With Friends.... At the time of writing, we are in the midst of a strange pattern of weather. Having just returned from our annual running holiday in Cyprus, I can report that our European neighbours are ‘suffering’ too. After a very bouncy flight we arrived to what the locals reported as the second most severe winter on record, with high winds, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. Fortunately, by race day, temperatures had sorted themselves out and we basked in 20 plus degrees of sunshine, which made the free post-race beers taste even better. The week passed too quickly but as every previous year, we made lots of new friends and renewed relationships with old ones.

The Gosport contingent made a lasting impression on locals, other racers and officials with our very vocal and impassioned support for every runner. So much so, the corner on which we gathered to offer such support is to be named ‘Gosport Corner‘ and there is an invitation to Gosport’s Mayor to visit and share the experience of Cyprus during Marathon Week next year.

As soon as we arrived home, we immediately booked ourselves in for a repeat in 2020. I don’t like wishing my life away, particularly at my age, but it does give me something pleasant to look forward to. Meanwhile, back in GosVegas, plans are well under way for the annual Gosport Golden Mile at Stokes 24

Bay which takes place on Fathers Day (Sunday 16th June). This is a great event in which you can officially record your best time for a 1-mile run and there is always a great atmosphere and medals for participants. The event kicks off with the Junior Golden Mile and sees youngsters from local schools racing for school honours. Is your school involved yet? It’s very easy and a great family morning out. Any enquiries can be directed to me at the Alton Sports Gosport in Stoke Road, as I’m more than happy to help. Article written by Nick Carter GosVegas Running Alton Sports Gosport

Recipe of the Month SLOW COOKED CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

One of the many great advantages of the slow cooker is that there’s no need to marinate dishes that normally require it. This gentle lengthy cook enables avors to develop and mingle together naturally during the lengthy cook. This is wonderful to come back to after a hard day at work or play.

Ingredients:

Equipment: Processor

4 chicken breasts, cubed 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons garam masala 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 can plum peeled tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped ( garnish)

Method: In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil. Process until you achieve a paste. Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture. Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes. Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top. Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander.
