Why? Because there are two bank holidays for a start! Who doesn’t love a long weekend off work, especially in May when the weather is starting to warm up! It’s about this time of year that as a family we start our ‘fish and chip Fridays’ down the beach. A quick walk to the local chippie and dinner on the beach, sometimes followed by an ice cream is the perfect way to finish a busy week at work or school. So much happens down on the waterside in the summer time we seem to forget how lovely it is in the colder months. My children can’t wait for the Splash Park to re-open on Stokes Bay and they are very excited to see what the new one in Lee will be like. As the weather warms up and you throw open the doors to let the fresh air in, you may start to think it is time to give the garden some TLC! Lucky for you there are some great businesses inside this lovely glossy mag that can help you. From big landscaping projects to smaller ‘tidy-up’ jobs, have a look through and give them a call. If you want to get out there and do it yourself, there’s the monthly ‘Watering and Wellies’ article to give you some hints and tips. We, however, are still working on the inside of our home and the final project is the bathroom! (why o why did we leave that to the end!!) It will commence in the next couple of weeks and although we are excited to finally finish the last room, as I look around the house I’m starting to see what needs decorating again! Does it ever end? I may just stay in the garden, with a G&T in the sun (fingers crossed!) and ignore it for a little while…

St Mary’s Church
In the UK we all live in a parish…Alverstoke Parish is yours! What is a parish? In the UK an ecclesiastical parish is the geographical area served by an Anglican parish church. Where ever we live in Britain, and whether we go to church or not, we do have certain rights with regard to the parish church. Anyone living in the parish can be married or have a funeral in their parish church. For weddings, even if you don’t still live there, you can still be married in the church if you’ve lived in the parish at any stage in your life, or you have a connection through your parents, grandparents or christening. For funerals, if someone lives in or even dies within the parish
then they can have a funeral in the church, whether or not they attended services. Again, anyone living in the parish can apply for a baptism or Christening. This is all because a Parish Church exists for the people of the parish, not just for a congregation who worship in the beautiful building. The same applies to our Church of England Schools. They were set up by the church over 100 years ago for everyone in the parish. They are not just for those who go to church, but for everyone. To this day the three church schools in Alverstoke parish are schools for the whole community (Alverstoke CE Junior School; Leesland CE Infant School and Leesland CE Junior School). Alverstoke parish is large, with nearly 18,000 residents. It ranges from Haslar to Browndown, and from Stokes Bay to Anne’s Hill and Leesland. The northern boundary is the old railway line. It includes three churches, St.Mary’s (Alverstoke), St.Faith’s (Leesland) and St.Francis (Clayhall). Plus we offer two church halls for community use - The Parish Centre and The Brodrick Hall.
16
We even look after St.Mark’s Churchyard and have a junior sailing club on Stokes Lake! For any enquiries please get in touch with our office in the Parish Centre on 02392 580551 or parishoffice@alverstoke.church Make the most of Alverstoke parish - it’s yours! Home Focus
HOME FOCUS Conquer the Clutter
One of the keys to a beautiful home is seamless storage and organisation, ensuring that everything has a place, and that everyone knows how the home operates. Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than spending time and money styling up your home to find that on a practical level it doesn’t work because you haven’t thought through where your day to day ‘stuff’ should live. Show homes are often guilty of smudging over the practicalities of life in favour of style. They design the space with gorgeous accessories and furnishings, but neglect the small, but hugely necessary requirement to store your hoover. Or they place a lovely ottoman at the end of the bed together with a TV on the wall but no-where in site is anything that resembles a wardrobe. But fear not! Here are some tips to get your home functioning beautifully and with great style. 1.
Declutter
Imagine you are about to move house. (It’s good to get into this mindset because it helps you to be really ruthless). Tackle one part of a room at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Go through your belongings and think about whether you really, really need the ‘thing’. Whether you adopt the fashionable Konmari method, or simply create three piles - keep, bin and charity - you can quickly filter your belongings and get them down to a manageable amount. Once you have less it’s far easier to find suitable storage solutions. 2.
Act on the declutter
It’s really easy, once you’ve gone through the above exercise, to leave the bin bags or boxes in a bit pile in the hallway and then not quite get round to moving them. Do this part immediately otherwise before you know it,

You can store keys in small drawers, hang family planners on the wall to keep 3. Storage everyone on track and use the space Now comes the fun part. Assess what things underneath for slippers or shoes to ensure you’re left with and take a look at their the hallway stays tidy. You can have a post purpose. Do you actually need a kitchen tray here, and baskets to pop bits in like drawer full of screwdrivers and string, or are lunchboxes or sports kit to go in/out of the those things better off in the garage so that house. you can use your kitchen drawer for 5. Clothing storage teatowels and herbs? Treat yourself to new storage solutions. Do a stocktake of what If space allows, consider moving seasonal you have to store before you leave. Make clothes around so that your hanging and sure you measure the dimensions of shelving drawer space isn’t compromised by holding or cupboards first and always buy more all of your attire. If you are able to vacuum containers or baskets than you think you’re bag a whole season then you can pop it away going to need. Even if you don’t fill them in the loft and give the remaining clothes immediately it’ll save a trip back to the shop space to breathe. Rolling your clothes in your when you do need them (or worse, find that drawers is also another great way to save you can’t get matching items when you need space but also see what you’ve got, instead of them). Watering and Wellies
SELF CONTAINED How to use pots and planters in your
garden to your advantage
Whether you have an acreage or a balcony, using containers in your garden can be a hugely practical, or cosmetic step and can transform your green space in a way that (in my opinion), no other garden ‘accessory’ can.
From a practical point of view, if you are limited on outside space, container gardening is perfect if you want to grow your own produce. Carrots and tomatoes will generally thrive happily in a grow bag or pot that has enough depth for the carrot to plough down, and if you have some canes or similar, tomatoes will wind their way up them and fill the air with that beautiful smell that only a tomato plant can throw off.

Keep on Running
The Cyprus Marathon and The Gosport Golden Mile At the time of writing, we are in the midst of a strange pattern of weather. Having just returned from our annual running holiday in Cyprus, I can report that our European neighbours are ‘suffering’ too. After a very bouncy flight we arrived to what the locals reported as the second most severe winter on record, with high winds, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. Fortunately, by race day, temperatures had sorted themselves out and we basked in 20 plus degrees of sunshine, which made the free post-race beers taste even better. The week passed too quickly but as every previous year, we made lots of new friends and renewed relationships with old ones.
The Gosport contingent made a lasting impression on locals, other racers and officials with our very vocal and impassioned support for every runner. So much so, the corner on which we gathered to offer such support is to be named ‘Gosport Corner‘ and there is an invitation to Gosport’s Mayor to visit and share the experience of Cyprus during Marathon Week next year.
As soon as we arrived home, we immediately booked ourselves in for a repeat in 2020. I don’t like wishing my life away, particularly at my age, but it does give me something pleasant to look forward to. Meanwhile, back in GosVegas, plans are well under way for the annual Gosport Golden Mile at Stokes 24
Bay which takes place on Fathers Day (Sunday 16th June). This is a great event in which you can officially record your best time for a 1-mile run and there is always a great atmosphere and medals for participants. The event kicks off with the Junior Golden Mile and sees youngsters from local schools racing for school honours. Is your school involved yet? It’s very easy and a great family morning out. Any enquiries can be directed to me at the Alton Sports Gosport in Stoke Road, as I’m more than happy to help. Article written by Nick Carter GosVegas Running Alton Sports Gosport

Recipe of the Month SLOW COOKED CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA
One of the many great advantages of the slow cooker is that there’s no need to marinate dishes that normally require it. This gentle lengthy cook enables avors to develop and mingle together naturally during the lengthy cook. This is wonderful to come back to after a hard day at work or play.

Ingredients:
Equipment: Processor
4 chicken breasts, cubed 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons garam masala 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 can plum peeled tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped ( garnish)
Method: In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil. Process until you achieve a paste. Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture. Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes. Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top. Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander.
