f you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading” Said Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher.

And of course, in typical ‘him and her’ style, lots has changed this month. Maybe it was all the full moons we’ve been having, or the feeling of spring and fresh starts over Easter but there have been lots of talk and planning over the last few weeks both at home and work that have resulted in us all ending up in a state of perturbation. Sean wrote recently about his thoughts which were: “to grow strong we need pressure … Ilya Prigegine won the Nobel Science prize for his work on the subject he called Perturbation. The boiling water example; when pressure is applied (heat) we keep on going until we feel ourselves pushed to the limit (simmering). At this point you are perturbed and you have one of two choices - stay under pressure (on the stove), or get out and relax again (off the stove). Most run from any pressure and therefore never grow. If you stay in the pressure, which is good, you will perturb more and more until in a split second you break through (boil). When you do POP through you will release energy EMOTION, energy in motion (steam) and it could be tears, laughter, anger etc. With negative or downward pressure, the whole team blows out and it’s not good, Positive or goal stretching pressure from the top, eventually growth will happen..... “ So here we are, a bit like a boiling pot on the stove, bubbling away. A few things have boiled over and others are still in there, rabbit like, waiting to be stewed and then savoured. And some of our bubbles have floated to the top and sailed away. One of these was Janet, our saleslady, who has settled into new pastures at the Directory Group (01730 260746) in Petersfield. She’ll have a ball there, we feel sure, so do get in touch with her if you have any advertising needs in the Emsworth to Alresford area. Until next month, Much love

Meet the new Sunday Service... As some of you may have noticed, I usually mention when writing how much I enjoyed the coffee during my visits. This, however, was a first! When I asked Kevin and Bridget Dean if I could pop over to find out more about St Faith’s new service, Sundays@11, I was immediately invited, not just for coffee, but for Sunday lunch!

Bridget. After three meetings the planning was completed and the first service took place last November.

The service pattern follows a similar format each week. After refreshments in the Bulson Hall, everyone meets in the church for an ‘all-together’ time with singing and prayers based on the theme for that particular week in the Kevin (left hand side, far right of church calendar. Whoever is leading is often armed with a 5th row back in the photo) and Bridget (front row, far left) were microphone and, walking around involved from the beginning in a the church, might invite anyone team brought together by Paul who wants to give their thoughts on whatever is being discussed. Chamberlain, the vicar, to plan for a new interactive service that After this get-together, the would differ from the other three congregation divides into groups: services and hopefully appeal to pre-school age, school age and people of all ages. The original adults (including teenagers) which separate into different team included Paul and his wife Becca, the curate Steve Dent, parts of the building for their Carolyn and Luke Marshall, Steve various activities. There is usually Bye and, of course, Kevin and a choice of two activities for the

6

adults. One group, for example, might have an ‘interactive’ sermon when, after a talk from the leader, people sub divide into smaller groups to talk about different aspects of what they’ve heard. Another group might opt for meditation where, concentrating on a candle flame or focusing on the act of breathing, people can clear their thoughts and enjoy the experience of simply being still while being led in a meditation about the theme for the day. In the final session everyone reassembles in the church for a time of prayer which is always interactive and might involve lighting a candle, writing a prayer, using water, stones or smells as symbols to pray with. After that there is more singing and a closing prayer. When the service ends, rather than rushing off, many seem keen to stop and

chat about what they’ve been doing in their groups.

There is something for everyone from the toddlers who sit on a mat at the front playing with toys As we talked about the service and the children accompanying over lunch, Bridget likened it to a songs on percussion to oldfamily meal where everyone gets timers like me. If you haven’t involved as opposed to a already been to Sundays@11, do restaurant dinner where the think about coming. It’s different, patrons expect to be served. The it’s new and it really is for hope is that many coming to the everyone. service will want to contribute in some way. They may wish to join As for Kevin and Bridget and their the band (there are currently two delicious lunch, what can I say? I trumpet players, a clarinet can only admire the work and player, a drummer, three devotion they and the team have guitarists and a lead singer who put into producing this service. If happens to be Bridget). Others you haven’t been to St. Faith’s might want to work with children before or only to other services, or greet people at the door. How why not try Sundays@l1? the service develops depends as much on those who come as on And finally, yes, after the meal I those who lead. was offered yet another cup of coffee.

Food and Drink

If you’re struggling for a unique but simple recipe for either a dinner party or just a nice evening in, this is perfect. You can add garnish of your own or even any leftover basil to the finished dish for serving.

Ingredients for 4 servings

3 tbsp olive oil 5 rashers of bacon 3 large boneless chicken thighs 1 clove of garlic 300ml double cream Pinch of Salt Pinch of freshly ground black pepper Fresh basil (a handful) 450g farfalle pasta 200g cheddar cheese (grated)

16

Equipment: Large pan, frying pan Method: In a large pan, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions, adding a pinch of salt to the water. While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Cut the chicken into strips and the bacon into small squares before adding to the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes, until the chicken is golden brown. Crush the garlic clove and add to the frying pan with the chicken and bacon. Cook for a further minute. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper, then add the cream and warm through. Drain the cooked pasta before adding the creamy mixture into the large pan. Before serving, tear up the fresh basil and add to the mixture along with the grated cheese. Add some garnish for a finished look and enjoy!

ABSOLUTE SCRUTINY: QUIKDRI TRACKSUIT £110 We were approached by the designer and owner of QuikDri during the summer of 2015. A local lady based in Fareham, she came up with the concept of a garment which could be used to enable parents to get their kids in and out of a swimming pool with minimum fuss and onto breakfast and school. The idea is simple: a garment that is a towel on the inside with a waterproof outer fabric that has full length heavy duty zips on the arms and legs to enable easy access. Once worn, the wearer simply gets in the car and can be whisked away. Absolute Running trialled these during our summer open water swim sessions but the QuikDri was up against well established rivals in Dryrobe and struggled to make headway with triathletes. We felt however that the suit was worth sticking with. Having used one ourselves we have to say that you look less out of place walking around in a 'track suit' and by the time we had driven the mile and a half

home we were both dry and very warm. When used at local swimming pools however, it really comes into its own. However cold and inclement the weather, QuikDri and flip flops are all that's required. No faffing with towels etc. In and out of the building in double quick time and away. Lots of different colour combo's available and easily personalised for team use. The QuikDri tracksuit is expensive at over £100 but IS heavy duty and well made. If swimming is your thing indoor or outdoor- this would be an investment worth making. Samples can be seen at Absolute Running in Stoke Road, Gosport or by contacting QuikDri direct from their website.

REMEMBER! At Absolute Running we are all about community, so pop in for a chat

Over 50? Bored of sitting in front of the TV every night? Fancy meeting new people, listening to music and having a dance? Then Club Loco is for you! We meet monthly and usually have a disco playing 50, 60 and 70’s music. Other times we’ve been known to have a music quiz, skittles night, ‘speed games’ …. You will have to come along to

find out what that was all about! “What about the weeks in between”? I hear you say! We welcome couples, groups of people or those on their own. If you have single, Sue and Jayne who started the group, know how difficult it can be walking in on your own so if you would like to meet for a coffee or drink

In house chat

The new Stamp Duty fees (that came into effect on the 1st of April) attract an additional surcharge on top of the normal rates of Stamp Duty. So many landlords will be asking themselves, “Is it still worth investing in property?” What are the new rules? Anyone purchasing a second home will have to pay a 3 per cent surcharge on top of the normal rates of stamp duty from April 1st this year. The government justifies the tax changes by the fact that they will use the money raised to help build new homes. The extra 3% may not sound too excessive, but a typical buy to let purchased in Lee on the Solent or Stubbington, at £190,000, will attract an additional £5,700 in Stamp Duty tax.

Who will be affected? The new rules will not just affect landlords. Those who currently own property abroad will not be exempt either if they then try and purchase property in the UK. Couples who are married or in civil partnerships are treated as a single unit, so if one partner owns a property and the

28

HOW WILL THE NEW SECOND HOME TAX RULES AFFECT YOU?

other doesn’t, then they buy a new home together in the UK, they are accountable for the stamp duty surcharge. Flipping your main residence Moving out of your primary residence, renting it out and then buying another property will not relieve you from additional stamp duty changes. If your original home is sold within 18 months however, the surcharge will be refunded.

Are there any exemptions? The only second-home stamp duty exemptions are houseboats, caravans, bulk purchases of over 15 properties and properties under £40,000 – which is rather rare in this area! Conclusion It may all sound disheartening, but panicking and selling is not the answer. Even if just 5 per cent of landlords leave the sector, the number of properties available for tenants will decrease substantially. Tenant demand is higher than ever before, so a smaller supply will translate into higher rents, which will lead to higher yield returns

for landlords. In addition, when a landlord feels it is the right time to sell, they can offset buying costs against any capital gains tax - including stamp duty. So though landlords will face a big bill now, they can claim stamp duty back against capital gains tax when they eventually sell at a healthy profit. Property still offers a fantastic longterm return like no other investment can - especially as future, increasing rents are very likely. It’s more important than ever to ensure you buy smart and take advice along the way.
