Job opportunities for our apprentices A group of UHB apprentices have gone the extra mile by obtaining jobs with the Trust within six months of starting their placements. Abdul Hakim, Cassie-Ann Stone, Katie Doak, Kerry Price and Sophia Beddows have all left the current apprenticeship programme after securing full-time posts. They were among 33 apprentices who began their 12-month placements in business administration, customer services or IT last December. Learning and Development Manager Karen Jameson said: “We continue to be very proud of our apprenticeship scheme, with many of our apprentices securing positions within the Trust. “The news about this latest group of apprentices obtaining jobs here clearly demonstrates how far they, and others, have developed in such a short time.” Cassie-Ann Stone, Administrative & Tutor Support Apprentice, who has obtained a job as a Theatre Support Worker, said: “I will be supporting patients in the Theatres department such as escorting them to and from the theatre, assisting the medical staff during the operation itself, and helping with the recovery once the operation is over. “I will also be responsible for ensuring the operating theatre is ready before the operation begins, and cleaned properly once the operation ends.” Cassie-Ann, aged 24, said she was ‘really excited’ to be a full time permanent staff member, adding: “I originally wanted to do theatres and was completely surprised but overjoyed when I was offered the job.” Sophia Beddows has switched from being an apprentice Multi Disciplinary Team Support Coordinator to a new role as an auxiliary nurse. The 18-year-old said: “Having had the experience in an office environment I felt as though I wanted more, and the position I have gained as an auxiliary nurse will give me hands on experience with patients. It is my ambition to now go back to university and register as a nurse.” Sophia added: “Learning and Development have been very good throughout my time on the apprenticeship scheme and in helping me find a job. They have pushed each apprentice to complete their work to the best they can and helped many people gain full time jobs.” Research & Development PA Apprentice Katie Doak, who has obtained a job as a waiting list coordinator, said she had benefited from ‘great work experience’ within the Trust, in particular in R&D.

Katie, 19, commented: “I worked really hard to get onto the apprenticeship programme and then to get a job. “I am really happy that all the hard work has paid off. I have really enjoyed my time and will be sad to go. I have learnt a lot here and can now finally put it all to use.” Abdul, aged 20, has obtained a full-time job as an Administrative Assistant in Therapy Services after joining the programme as an Apprentice Graphic Designer. He said: “I am based in the reception area with first point of contact with patients, booking them in for their appointments to see their physiotherapists. “The apprentice scheme has helped me a

great deal and it is great to have a full-time job with the Trust. It has meant a lot for me being part of the NHS, joining as an apprentice through Learning and Development and then securing a permanent position three months into my apprenticeship.” Kerry has joined Sophia in also becoming an auxiliary nurse, working in the Clinical Decision Unit, after previously being based within radiotherapy services during her apprenticeship.
