The massive task of organisation owes much to the band of dedicated people who serve meals, look after security, act as guides and interpreters, children's officers, ticket seller parade marshals etc., all co-ordinated by Joe and Olga Maloney our Director and Artistic Director. Without them all and you the audience this event would not happen or indeed without the financial support of Stockton Borough Council's generous grant. Now let the words cease and the dancing begin.

It is with great pleasure, we welcome back our old friends, Tine Rozanc. Some of the older ones among us may be able to remember the first time this group appeared in Billingham in 1969, and most of the group members today are from the original group. The Group was founded in '1949. ln 1993 the ex-dancers - members of the Group in the 50's decided to get back together and form the "Old Timers" Group, under the leadership of the Group's original

Director Bruno Ravnikar. Since then "The Old Timers" have enjoyed a huge success and have toured around Europe, taking part in various Festivals.

I

their formation they have successfully participated in Festivals all over Europe as well as Since

their own Country, presenting varied Songs and Dances in authentic costumes from all over their Region.

The name of this group comes

from the "Val d'Anniviers", a valley in Southern Switzerland, where an ugly dwarf Zacheos used to come out to torment the inhabitants of the valley. They chose this name to link the future with the past. The Music and Dances are inspired by Folk Tales and peoples way of life, when everyone was involved in village festivities.

will delight us with dances like "The Matze" from the Wallis Region, portraying the peasants revolt against their They

Bishops and enemies, "The Wedding Dance" featuring courtship where the men show off their strengths and ability and the girls, reveal their charms in dancing Farandoles.

The "Loetschental Masks" is an ancient dance when the Loetschental Valley was green and the pastures rich. A goat and a dishevelled male triggered avalanches and ruined paradise. To get rid of these evil spirits the villagers wore wooden masks and carved frightening faces. During carnivals these masks are still worn today.
