ARTFUL EXPERIENCE OF DECORATIVE LIGHT
During the past years, the trend in “decorative lighting” industry, an industry that underlines the importance of lighting and design has gone beyond the commercial goals but the effort to create new sense and experience that is completely different for users. This is a passion of Zhang Ming, President of ONGA Artful Light, a veteran and key player in Thailand’s lighting business for over 24 years. He shares with us today his views as he looks into the past, present, and future of this industry: - Tell us about the beginning that prompted Onga to start its decorateive lighting business. In the beginning, my father founded a company to install lights for government organizations or public street lights. In 2003, we saw an opportunity to expand the business to decorative lights. We started with small projects i.e. decorative lights for malls and department stores. Then we added the design, consultation, and service components to our business to make it a one-stop service.
- What made you interested in the decorative lighting business and made it the core business of Onga? It is probably because I travel to other countries a lot. I realize that the decorative lighting market is pretty open. I think there is so much potential in terms of development. People love beautiful decorations, especially light displays like in Thailand. We love to see beautiful buildings with good-quality light fixtures that are beautiful and affordable in the design.
- How has the lighting industry changed? The most visible one is the technological change i.e. LED bulbs that save energy. They are very environmentally friendly. The other thing is fiber optic bulbs. We cannot completely separate decorative lighting from lighting. Lighting is about beauty and functionality at the same time. Both are equally important.
