REGUlATIONS

Article1 Themainpurposeofthe 18th São Paulo Biennial is to show lhe significant trends in contemporary art that involve a discussion on Man and Life. It is also intended to show representations which have specially contributed to the development of contemporary art. Article2 The 18th São Paulo Biennialwill beheldfrom October 4th. through December 15th. 1985, at its headquarters in São Paulo, the Parque Ibirapuera, and ai other spaces in the city of São Paulo. Article3 The 18th São Paulo Biennial proposes theorganization of two exhibition nuclei:

Nucleusl This nucleus intends to compare today's outstanding aspects of art within the diversity of media and expressions lhat currently characlerize it. In this nucleus, lhe presentations will be grouped under the criteria of language analogy rather than by national representations. An interdisciplinary commitlee with the participation of foreign collaborators and presided bythe Art Curator will be responsible for organizing this exhibition at lhe appropriale time and spaces according to the adopted criteria.

lIIuclel.lsll This nucleus will groupthe presenlations of artists or movements which have brought any sign ificant contribution to the developmenl of contemporary art as expressed in Article 1. Article4 The São Paulo Biennial Foundation may, should this prove interesting, sponsor the meeting of Brazilian and foreign artists seeking to promote a joint artistic project. Article5 The 18th São Paulo Biennial may alsofeature satellite exhibitions or special exhibits and architecture, music, dance, thealre and cinema presentations as well. Arlicle6 Seminars, lectures and similareventswill be taking place during the 18th São Paulo Biennial. These will be organized by invited Brazi lian and foreign special ists with lhe participation of artists, historians and art critics and other scholars.

Article7 Nucleus I will havethe participation of invited foreign and Brazilian artists.

§ 1 -TheArts andCultureCommission ofthe São Paulo Biennial Foundation will be responsible for selecting the Brazilian artists. This Commission will also indicate the number of artists to be invited and 01 works to be presented.

§ 2 - Foreign participants will be selected by their respective countries' officials. The São Paulo Biennial Foundation, through its Art Curator, suggests that foreign delegations should include no more than 5 artists, with sufficient presentalions so as to allow the understanding of their work and which may fil in lhe alloted space as provided on Article 8, item (b).

§ 3 - So as to ensure the development of specific projects in Nucleus I, the São Paulo Biennial Foundation retains the right 01 also seflding individual invitations to foreign artists. Article8 Each participating country shall appoint a representative as their own and only accountable person to deal with the São Paulo Biennial. It is the job of this representative: a) - To send, no laterthan May 15th. 1985, ali the participation entry forms as well as photographs/work projects and criticai reviews which will be used for making the catalog. The representative shall write a foreword to the works (or commission somebody to this task) and send it along with the biographical data of each artist. Article9 Ali foreign works shall be accompanied by a customs report even when transportation charges are nol applicable. Each Bill of Landing should have three copies attached of the works listing, with the following informalion: ® Artist's name @ Title of work ® Technique used @Size ® Value/price Article 10 The works of Brazilian and foreign artists alike shall be submitted no later than July 31st. 1985. Article 11 The following expenses will be paid by lhe Fundação Bienal de São Paulo:

b) - To indicate lhe space needs for the presentation, always keeping within lhe 300 square metres or 120 linear metres alloted to each participating country.

a) - For foreign participants: land transportation within Brazil, from the unloading portto the Biennial site and back to the shipment port; unpacking, mounting and repacking of works.

c) - To precisely state the technical items needed for the presentations, with specific and graphic indication as to: electric power and light requirements(110/220volts -60 cycles is the eleclric current in Brazil); V.T. HIGH-BAND; PAl:M (60 cycles - 525Iines); orNTSC.

b) - For Brazilian participants: insurance; transportation; unpacking, mounting and repacking of works; a fixed fee to each arlist. Article 12 Special framings or mountings will be paid for by lhe person in charge or the exhibitor himself.

a)- To state in lhe export license, besides tha! of São Paulo, the name of ali Brazilian cities to which lhe exhibit is expected to travei and the name of lhe cily abroad to which il shall be returned after lhe exhibition.

e)- Tobe, either in person or represented by an accredited commissioner, present for lhe customs' clearance of packages, checking the works against the export licenses and signing the customs' proceedings ai the works' arrival and atthe time of return shipment as well.

Article 13 Accordingto Brazilian customs regulations, no foreign works are allowed to remain in the country for more than 60 days after the closing of lhe Biennial.
