Welcome to the 6th edition of RailCONNECT, a quarterly publication available online at www.railconnect.co.uk and in print format. We hope all of our readers are finding this publication a useful industry communication tool, to bridge the gap between buyers and suppliers in the Rail industry. In this edition, we have our regular features from Christian Wolmar; a writer and broadcaster specialising in transport. He has covered the railways since privatisation in the mid-1990s and writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines. In this quarter, he takes a closer look at the East Coast Franchise, which has been in the public sector for three years and analyses whether this has worked, or is losing its way, on pages 04-05. He goes on to discuss the new high-speed line, which is now centring on the siting of stations, particularly those in Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby and Euston, on pages 22-23. Christian explores the Thameslink project on pages 16-18, which will transform rail communications in the capital, with trains that will travel from north to south London via the City for the first time in 72 years – and for the first time ever it will be possible to travel through the centre of London from all points of the compass! Finally, on pages 20-21, Christian analyses the past, present and future of the London Underground following its 150th Anniversary. We also have our regular articles covering Law, Finance, Security and our Q&A, which in this edition are answered by Jeff Hoogesteger, Chief Executive at Abellio, to keep you abreast of issues within the industry. In addition to our regular features, Tony Lodge calls on the government to encourage and allow more open access competition alongside franchises, on pages 32-33. Matt Lovering also looks at what really drives passenger satisfaction; how train operating companies can identify the initiatives that they could be implementing to improve satisfaction and quantify the anticipated benefits, on pages 36-37. We get an update on Andy Ridout’s campaign for Railway Children, on pages 38-39, and finally, Annette Gevaert offers suggestions on how the rail industry can further develop innovative working, on pages 40-41. Do make use of our convenient and up to date directory covering a range of companies and breadth of products and services available to the rail industry starting from page 45. If your company isn’t currently listed, please refer to our inclusion form on pages 67-68 or alternatively e-mail andrew.tepielow@theconnectseries.co.uk. RailCONNECT is about your industry so we welcome your editorial contributions. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have any comments or suggestions as we are always interested to hear your views. We hope our readers enjoy the summer edition of RailCONNECT and look forward to hearing any feedback you may have.
