It was recently acquired by a US company for $126m, but Dave says “The energy we are creating is fantastic, generating a lot of international business,” and the Zenith team continue to work in Aberdeen developing new products for the industry.

aberdeen software goes global In 2010 a fire on Chevron Upstream Europe (CUE)’s unmanned Erskine platform necessitated an eight month renovation project. CUE teamed up with Aberdeen design and communications company Return to Scene (R2S) to employ a visual asset management tool that has proved so effective that Chevron is implementing it across all its assets. Bob Donnelly, Business Development Manager at R2S, says, “Chevron see it as a safety product as it reduces the number of journeys ashore.” Non-core staff trips are reduced by up to two thirds, saving time, money and

We only do one thing, but we do it very well.” Demand for ROVs is growing fast as ageing North Sea infrastructure requires ever more maintenance, offshore wind farms are being built all across northern Europe and oil companies search for oil in increasingly challenging deep water environments. Sophisticated and modern ROVs are expensive pieces of kit and launching a high tech company requires financial backing. Aberdeen’s banking, finance and legal sectors are geared up to work with the oil industry. Steven says, “Raising finance is undoubtedly a challenge in the current financial markets, but with a proven management team and strong, well informed financial backers, we have been able to deliver the necessary funding.”

The application of Operational Excellence Every year UK North Sea operators see an average 30 per cent level of production deferment. This lost production, which is often referred to as the phantom oilfield, equates to billions of dollars in lost revenues and can represent a sizeable chunk of an operator’s portfolio. Operational Excellence (OPEX) Group was formed in Aberdeen in 2010 to address this challenge by working to eliminate production losses and unplanned breakdowns. 6

faIRfIElD INvESTS £70 mIllION IN DUNlIN UpgRaDES Fairfield Energy Limited, the private, North Sea-focused, independent oil and gas company, has invested £70 million in improvements at its Dunlin platform to help increase and sustain production. This is part of a number of developments reinforcing the operator’s commitment to Dunlin and the wider North Sea. The new fuel gas import system and modified water injection system are expected to enable production to rise to a year-end exit rate of around 10,000 bopd. For the first time since early 2000, the operator will be able to use its own independent power generation system to achieve significantly higher and sustained water injection performance. Since Fairfield took over the Dunlin platform in 2008, the operator has been focused on revitalising the former Shell asset to increase production levels in the mature field. This has involved platform and subsea well work, significant asset integrity and fabric maintenance activity and recently the acquisition of a new 3D seismic survey over the Dunlin field. The results from the survey will help support a near field exploration

I’m currently working in a container that is 20 x 8 feet, but they can be as small as 10 x 8 feet for two or three people.” Each time a ROV is commissioned to work from a new location, the container must be transported to the rig and lifted aboard before it can be set up. Jamie explains, “Set

Jamie moved from working outside of the submersibles into working as an observer, doing the video work inside the submersible. Suddenly the work changed completely. Jamie says “ROVs came into the marketplace in late 1979 and replaced the manned submersible almost overnight.” The new technology meant that everyone was learning on the hoof how best to operate and maintain the devices.

Emergence of ROvs transformed subsea operations

ROV operators must be adept at installing and maintaining the devices as well as operating them. Jamie reflects, “Equipment is now much more reliable than 30 years ago. Then a large part of the job was keeping the equipment going.”

Jamie has been operating ROVs since they first came into service over 30 years ago. During this time he has seen the devices evolve to become increasingly sophisticated and reliable. Jamie joined the industry doing a summer vacation job, working as a swimmer/diver in the North Sea, when manned submersibles were used to do the work that is now carried out by ROVs. His role was to attach the lines used for getting the submersibles in and out of the water. It was an action-packed, macho environment and he liked it so much that he abandoned college and never returned.

ROVs work in all sorts of conditions. Work class ROVs can be made to operate at depths of over 5000 metres. Faster running, shallower depths are among the most difficult conditions, with strong currents and constant scouring posing particular challenges. The

The pattern of work for a ROV pilot in the oil industry is to work offshore on a ship or installation for a two or three week period, followed by a similar time off. The working day consists of 12 hours on and 12 hours off, but ROV pilots must be flexible and may be called on to put in longer hours if problems arise. Generally a ROV has two crews of between two and five people, each working a 12 hour shift. On some jobs the ROV is only needed for a few hours of the week, so the crew is on standby throughout.

At greater depth there is a lot less current and far fewer variables. The shallower depths contain kelp, shells and organic material which can all damage the ROV as well as being very near to the vessel propellers.” The number of ROVs working in the industry is increasing rapidly, and skilled ROV pilots are much in demand to work around the world. Would-be pilots usually have existing skills in hydraulics or electronics. Then it is a case of building up supervised flying hours to get experience. A good ROV operator needs three dimensional awareness and patience. Jamie says that experience is vital as no two jobs are the same. “I enjoy the challenge of problem solving and working round new situations.”

Flotta, the ‘flat isle’, is one of the circle of islands surrounding the 130 sq km deep, water sheltered anchorage of Scapa Flow.

Once the Second World War was over, the military departed, leaving behind a heritage of wartime buildings, many of which, although overgrown and decaying, can be seen today. The waters have provided safe moorings to sea-going ships for centuries. Tankers heading to Flotta to load oil or gas cargoes are the latest in a long line of vessels which have moored in Scapa Flow. Straddling the North Sea and the Atlantic, Scapa Flow played a notable role in British naval history. In 1914, Scapa Flow was the anchorage for the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet in its battles with Germany’s High Seas Fleet. At the end of the First World War, 74 German warships, stripped of their ammunition and breech blocks, were interned in Scapa Flow while the allies discussed what to do with them. On 21st June 1919 the German skeleton crews scuttled the ships to prevent them being

s an island nation we have a long seafaring history, continued by the North Sea offshore industry, which employs a vast range of specialist vessels for oil and gas exploration and production. Large numbers of specialist ships are employed in the exploration and construction stages of offshore developments. Developers spend eye-watering sums of money to charter sophisticated specialist vessels including survey craft, drilling ships, jack up barges, subsea support vessels and pipelaying vessels. Once construction has been completed, seagoing ships and boats continue to play a key role. Supply vessels ply the waters taking essential supplies to offshore platforms. They deliver fresh water, food and supplies for crew and spare parts and new machinery for production. Standby vessels provide emergency and rescue services, and also carry out tasks such as maintaining exclusion zones around installations and moving people and supplies between local facilities.

Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs) provide frontline cover for thousands of people working in one of the harshest environments in the world. Every manned offshore installation has an ERRV on standby in case of emergency. 26

Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs) provide frontline cover for thousands of people working in one of the harshest environments in the world. Every manned offshore installation has an ERRV on standby in case of emergency. ERRV crews are skilled mariners, trained in rescuing people from the water, giving medical assistance and evacuating people from the installation in case of emergency. ERRV Masters and Mates are specially trained to take over the initial control of rescue activities in the vicinity of a major offshore incident, until the emergency onshore support centres can co-ordinate the whole rescue. Each ERRV is crewed round the clock, 365 days a year. Rescuing people from the sea is normally carried out by Fast Rescue Craft (FRC) or Daughter Craft. The FRCs are about seven metres long, highly manoeuvrable rigid inflatable boats manned by a crew of three. Each ERRV carries at least 2 FRCs. Daughter Craft are larger than FRCs and are designed to be capable of working at remote locations up to 10 miles from the ERRV. When adverse weather conditions make the use of a FRC impossible, survivors are rescued by specialist equipment that can be used to lift them straight from the sea into the ERRV. Once on board, survivors are cared for in specialist treatment rooms by crew members who have been trained in medical and survival aid. If a survivor requires specialist attention they can be winched from the deck of the ERRV and transferred by helicopter. ERRVs are also used to carry out other duties including warning shipping that is at risk of collision with installations, inter-field cargo operations, towage assistance and pollution control. Since 1986, North Sea ERRVs have rescued more that 378 people, of which half were oil and gas rescues and the other half from distressed fishing vessels, yachts and merchant ships. Aberdeen company launches new ERRVs This year, Aberdeen global shipping and energy services company Craig Group has launched four brand new ERRVs for the oil and gas industry. The new boats – the Grampian Don, the Grampian Dee, the Grampian Discovery and the Grampian Defiance – were designed by IMT of Montrose and built at the Balenciaga Shipyard, Northern Spain in a £35m contract. Each boat is equipped with one or two daughter craft and one fast rescue craft. The Grampian Dee is contracted by Valiant Petroleum for exploration drilling support in the Central North Sea. The Grampian Discovery is on contract to Shell to support North Sea drilling operations while the Grampian Don will go on a five year charter to another major operator in the North Sea. edia attention which has focused on the UK oil and gas industry has been rife with recent reports of an impending skills shortage set to cripple the sector. In a bid to combat this problem, a north east training company has launched a project which aims to encourage youngsters to recognise the career potential that exists within the energy industry. Survivex Ltd, a health and safety training provider based in Dyce, Aberdeen, launched Survivex for Schools earlier this summer and welcomed the first wave of participants in September. The initiative sees groups of pupils visit the facility for an interactive tour of its survival and industrial skills training areas. The project has been rolled out to schools across Aberdeen City and Shire and has been welcomed by education chiefs. Survivex for Schools comes at a crisis point in UK oil and gas. A recent study by PWC identified that 120,000 new recruits are required to enter the industry by 2022. The sector is facing the reality of an ageing work-force; with many skilled individuals due to reach retirement age in the next few years and too few trainees with the correct skills emerging. Couple that with a serious shortfall of women in the sector and it points directly to a recruitment and training issue that needs to be addressed immediately. The reasons for this remain unclear. Possibly it’s a direct result of the long held belief that North Sea oil reserves are in decline. The uncertainty of the lifespan of a chosen career may well discourage potential recruits from entering a declining sector. However, this myth is now disputed and examples of widespread investment in the area point to the contrary. For example, Apache is installing a satellite production platform that will extend the life of the Forties field by 20 years. And this is backed up by China’s intention to enter the North Sea, among other areas, with the reported acquisition of Nexen by CNNOC. Stories such as these do not point to a diminishing industry. The notion that work offshore is dirty and unglamorous remains strong and there seems to be little understanding of the variety of job roles open to individuals entering oil and gas. Ensuring that pupils go away with a better understanding of the positions that exist is a key aim of Survivex for Schools. In addition to this the amount of time spent away from home and the perceived

dangers of both helicopter travel and life offshore prevents this being an attractive career prospect for many potential recruits. Disasters such as Piper Alpha and the more recent Super Puma crash live long in people’s memories and undoubtedly have a negative effect on those considering a career offshore. And finally the lack of pupils, particularly females, choosing the stem subjects which include science, technical engineering, and maths has a direct impact on the talent pool available for the oil and gas sector.

Couple that with the time off that many offshore workers enjoy, the prospect of international travel and the high wages that prevail across the sector and there’s no doubt that school pupils wouldn’t go far wrong to consider a job in oil and gas. The industry has also learnt from the mistakes of the past and the health and safety culture that now exists is unrivalled by other sectors.’ Survivex for Schools aims to educate pupils as to the job opportunities available as well as giving them an insight into what to expect from the training they would be required to undertake before embarking on an offshore

career. Pupils receive an extensive welcome brief in which they are given an overview of offshore life and job role descriptions. This is followed with a tour of the training areas where they are given a demonstration of the helicopter underwater escape trainer and also get to experience North Sea storm conditions in the environmental effects simulator which recreates wind, waves and rain. Moving on from the survival area, the pupils try their hand at simple rigging lifts and get to sit in the helicopter which is used to transport personnel offshore in the Far East. ‘Survivex has recently celebrated its first birthday and following the success we’ve enjoyed we pledged to give back to the community that has served us so well’ Jenny continues. ‘Increasingly schools are looking for alternative exit routes for pupils at a time when headlines are rife with news of jobless figures and economic depression. But equally there is this huge shortage of recruits entering our industry. Through Survivex for Schools we hope to bridge this gap.’ Currently two school groups have completed the experience with another three booked in for this term. ‘The first pupils have been higher chemistry students so are ideally suited to undertake our tour. They are on the right path for entering the oil industry and we’re just trying to ensure that they continue in this direction.’ ‘These first tours have been very successful and we’ve had excellent feedback. Getting them involved in activities holds their attention and by including some exciting elements such as the environmental effects, we’ve really captured their imagination. I ask the same question at the beginning and the end of the experience. Who is considering a career in the oil and gas industry? I’m pleased to say that a number of pupils have reconsidered their future following our tour.’ Currently the initiative is open to students of S4 and above. However, Survivex plans to lower the participation age next year. Jenny concludes ‘We’ve limited it to the older pupils while we’re finding our feet. But it’s important to catch children before they make their subject choices so we’re very aware that this scheme will be even more beneficial to younger pupils. We want as many youngsters as possible to participate in the project and hope that through Survivex for Schools we can go some way towards making an impact on the long-term future of North Sea oil and gas as a whole.’ Oil&GasCONNECT

f it is correct that the ‘licence to operate’ for many forms of oil and gas exploration depends ultimately on public consent, the emerging shale gas industry has got off to a rocky start. Shale gas has attracted significant international attention as a possible alternative to conventional natural gas, both in the US and more recently in Europe. Found in thin layers of sedimentary rock known as shale deposits between 500 and 11,000 feet below the surface, some of the largest deposits are estimated to hold as much as 500 million cubic metres of gas reserves. The techniques involved in extracting shale gas on a commercial scale are controversial. Due to the low permeability of shale and the depth of the reservoirs, a technique known as hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ is being employed in order to release gas reserves. This involves injecting a fluid mixture of water, sand or ceramic beads and chemicals into the rock at high pressure, in order to fracture it and release the gas with greater efficiency.

Early pioneers of hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking’ in the USA included some firms which were enthusiastic about exploiting loopholes in Federal regulation, secretive about the numerous chemicals used in the fracking process, and less careful than they should have been about ensuring well and drilling integrity, and protecting groundwater in particular against the risks of contamination. Several well publicised incidents of contamination resulted, and have generated huge concern amongst the public - spurred on by landmark events such as the movie ‘Gasland’ with its images of drinking water being lit - which the more responsible firms within the industry are still battling to contain. Once more the battle lines were drawn between environmentalists arguing that all fracking was irresponsible and damaging, and

A whole series of reports from leading academic and technical institutions have followed addressing the more obvious aspects of public concerns. These include: • the possibility of methane contamination of groundwater (Duke University 2011); • use, contamination and disposal as waste water (Maryland University 2010, UK Department of Energy & Climate Change 2010, Tyndall Centre 2011); • seismic activity in the Bowland shale (Synthesis report 2011); • greenhouse gas emissions (Cornell University 2010); and • fracking chemicals (US House Democrats, April 2011). Growing up in Derby surrounded by respected engineering heritage such as Rolls Royce, engineering was always a logical and appealing career choice. I started my career as a piping draughtsman in the power industry, working for a company which is one of our customers. Having used AVEVA’s software in industry, I was very excited when the opportunity arose to join the company. Starting as an applications consultant, I worked alongside and trained customers’ staff across all of AVEVA’s principal engineering sectors. During my 15 years with AVEVA I have enjoyed a diverse career with the company and been presented many opportunities to progress, including roles as major account manager and – perhaps most notably – helping to set up our Middle East operations in the early 2000’s. Currently, I am Country Manager for our UK & Ireland division.

What is the best advice you’ve been given? What do you enjoy most about your job? What developments do you expect to see in the next five years at avEva? As our company strapline indicates, AVEVA’s philosophy is one of Continual Progression, so I expect to see many exciting developments. Throughout my AVEVA career I have seen the company achieve tremendous organic and inorganic growth, with huge increases in our number of employees, our global office base and our revenue and profit. Perhaps most notable have been the increases in our product and service offerings, of which I expect to see many more in the next five years. In fact, this year alone will have seen two major product introductions. AVEVA Bocad is a structural design package from a company we acquired earlier this year; we have a clear road map for its long-term development and progressive integration with our other engineering and design solutions. But the big game-changer for the plant industry is a new product we are describing as the Future of Plant Design. We confidently expect this to revolutionise plant design and take the engineering industry to a new level of productivity and capability.

What is your greatest career achievement to date? I have had a number of personal high points throughout my career; as I mentioned, helping to set up our operations in the Middle East was a great experience and one of which I am very proud. Overall, I would have to say that the opportunity to lead a very successful UK & Ireland team to continually accomplish company goals provides great fulfilment for me. The inherent strong work ethos that we have in the team ensures that time and time again we deliver a professional experience to our clients, from every step of the sales cycle, through implementation, training and support. Getting customer feedback that our ‘can do’ approach contributes to the decision to implement AVEVA products is a great achievement I am very proud of.

Its diversity is certainly the most enjoyable aspect of my job. Externally, we work with companies from a range of industry sectors; appreciating the variety of unique engineering challenges they each face, and working with them to help them overcome these challenges, can be fascinating. Internally, team members have a broad range of skills and the ability to empower each other. It is very rewarding to work with such capable and confident individuals as they develop their own careers through achieving results for our clients.

If you could change anything about the industry what would it be and why? The general skills shortage within engineering is an obvious answer here, particularly in the UK. To help make a difference, through our Academic Initiative programme, AVEVA is actively supporting universities and training academies around the world to help increase the numbers and capabilities of ‘project-ready’ engineers. The ‘why’ is obvious: the world needs engineering more than ever before, but engineering is also a uniquely fulfilling career choice for creative people who want to make a positive difference to the world. I would also like to see more multi-industry forums to share best practice. In our work, we often see similarities in many of the challenges faced by different industries, for example in design to build strategies and data handover techniques. I firmly believe there are lessons to be learned by adopting a consistent approach across many aspects of engineering. Again, we can make a small difference here; AVEVA hosts a series of AVEVA World events to provide forums for industry decision makers, through to engineers and designers, to ‘look over the fence’ and share success stories and insights.

The best advice I was ever given was from an early age and it was simply, if you feel you can achieve something you should approach it with full confidence!

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? Working closely both with our customers and my own colleagues, I see many brilliant young minds with considerable potential. To that end, my advice to someone starting out in the industry would be to learn your engineering discipline well. Get as much hands-on experience as you can and don’t be afraid to put yourself forward. I firmly believe that individuals should always be measured on their capability and not age.

What inspires you? My children are my main inspiration without a doubt. But in the workplace I would have to say that enabling younger team members to develop their careers is also an inspiration. So too is working with like-minded people who embrace change with drive and ambition; fortunately I get this in abundance at AVEVA!

Where do you see the UK oil & gas industry in 10 years? For a long time the UK oil & gas industry has been a front runner, leading the way in new technologies and methodologies and I expect this to continue as we start to see an increase in both expansion projects and decommissioning. And I believe one of the top performing rigs in all the BP floater fleets from the standpoint of safety and drilling performance’.5 So, maintaining a positive safety culture is difficult to achieve; as Professor James Reason (a world leading expert on human error) said, ‘Like a state of grace, a safety culture is something that is striven for but rarely attained’.6

So, do true safety cultures exist?

This demonstrates there are still significantly more individuals offshore between the ages of 23 and 33, than there are exiting the industry. However, it is also important to remember that merely looking at ‘averages’ doesn’t give you the true picture; there are pockets of disciplines offshore where the average age is alarmingly high – for example, marine crew, riggers and divers. The issue of the ageing profile in these functions needs to be dealt with separately. So what are the issues that need to be addressed to tackle this problem? Given that access to the right skills and expertise is one of the industry’s biggest limiting factors, it is critical that we focus on (1) sourcing new talent from other ‘pools’ and (2) ensuring that people coming into the industry are subject to focused and tailored training programmes.

The growth of the industry drives the inevitable skills squeeze, which seems to be dealt with onshore by an immediate fix of attracting people through higher pay. This is a short-term solution, which although insulated by higher oil prices and margins, has resulted in the industry paying a lot more for the same level of competency (or possibly less!). This is clearly not a healthy or sustainable long-term solution. Many of the jobs onshore can be relatively easily replaced from outside the oil and gas market. However there is a real gulf between supply and demand for individuals with specialist skills in the areas of Engineering, Project Management, Commercial, HSE, Quality, Planning, Geotechnical, Survey etc. and this gap cannot be narrowed by merely paying more for these skills than the employer next door. There are of course graduate programmes, which employers in the industry are fully committed to. But this is not enough; a concerted common approach to the fasttracking of personnel from other industries is needed to address current growth plans. There are frequent seminars, forums and conferences debating the skills issue within the oil and gas industry but a scan of the delegates list will show that with the odd exception, it’s not the key decision makers within companies who are taking part in these discussions. As a country, UK businesses invest upwards of £39 billion a year on formal training. Contrary to this, a recent Confederation of British Industry (CBI) survey found that while the UK has a number of strengths, our international attractiveness on a number of key investment factors has declined in the last decade – including the availability of a skilled workforce. If our financial commitment is rising, but we are falling in the overall skills table, we must ask ourselves; are we are investing our resources properly? Safety has long been the watchword for the oil and gas industry. The sector understands the importance of maintaining the integrity of its offshore infrastructure and commits billions of pounds every year to ensure safe operations. WWW.THECONNECTSERIES.CO.UK

It now looks as if we can place a value on training in the UK as a whole. A recent European research paper, produced by the Institute for the Study of Labour, looked at investment in and time spent on vocational training and showed that for every hour spent on training, the workforce accelerates growth of GDP by 0.55%. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a startling statistic that such a relatively small amount of training time can have such an impact on the wider economy. A previous report from the CBI also highlighted that a business is 25% more likely to survive a downturn in the economy if it invests in training. In a cyclical industry like oil and gas, investing in future skills needs to be top of the agenda for all presidents, chief executive officers, managing directors and other senior management roles across the energy mix. These are the people who need to be at the forefront of changing how we manage the skills issue. They are the ones who have the authority to effect change at the highest levels in an organisation and ensure it is cascaded down.

The interaction of the tieback with the topside and its control system can be validated and tested. Operators can be trained in operating the old facility with the new fluids. On-line dynamic models can be used to provide flow assurance advice and provide on-line information on handling the new production or meeting product constraints. The on-line dynamic model can also be used for leak detection and location. This helps you to have better control of the integrity of old pipeline infrastructure.

Modifications and More Modifications Dynamic simulation reduces risk and improves the quality of your modification process. Simulating the modification in a dynamic simulator before it is made allows you to check the effects of the modification on the performance of the rest of the facility. You can also check what the implications of the modification are for process control. Modifications in the control system can be fully tested before implementation offshore. Some leading operators require all modifications to be tested in this way. It is also good practice to implement all modifications in the platforms training simulator as they are made. This ensures that training is always correct and relevant. Using Dynamic Simulation on operational and ageing assets to decrease downtime is proving invaluable for an increasing number of North Sea operators.
