Renewing the Tok Pisin Bible In response to requests from church leaders, this project is revising the popular Tok Pisin Bible translation for the people of Papua New Guinea, creating a more readable version more widely accessible, especially for the younger generation. Pioneer Bible Translators and SIL PNG have partnered with Bible Society, offering workplaces for translators, along with translators and translator consultant assistance. Initial portions of the revised text have already been used by churches for preaching and Sunday school.

In 2002, the Pitjantjatjara Shorter Bible (New Testament + 15% of the Old Testament) was published. Years later, in 2011, the Pitjantjatjara Old Testament Translation Project was initiated. In 2018, a multivoice audio recording of the New Testament was made and published online. And finally by 2023

Work commenced on first drafts of Exodus, Nehemiah, Lamentations, Hosea, 1 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Obadiah, Nahum, Amos and Ecclesiastes.

Three translation consultant workshops were held in August-September (Judges), December (Haggai and several Psalms), and March (17 more Psalms, almost completing Psalms 1-41).

“One morning I received a phone call from one of the Pitjantjatjara translators saying, ‘Dave, I’m ready!’ Bewildered, I clarified, ‘Ready for what?’ the translator responded eagerly, ‘Aren’t we doing translation today?’ and I had to explain that it wasn’t until tomorrow!” — David Barnett, Translator and Bible Engagement Coordinator

Indigenous Bible Distribution Each year BSA distributes Indigenous Bibles and Scripture resources free of charge to organisations and churches who minister to communities around Australia, through our Scripture Grants program. Bibles and Scripture portions distributed between July 2022 and June 2023 via Bible Society's Scripture Grant program to remote Indigenous communities, including: CEV The Deadly News: Gospel of Mark Kriol Bibles Pitjantjatjara Shorter Bibles

“Such is the demand for Pitjantjatjara Bibles and Hymnbooks in the APY Lands that when a shipment of Bibles and Hymnbooks arrives at the Ernabella/Pukatja Community Store, they are immediately snapped up by the community. In fact, they sold out of stock within half an hour... which sounds like Taylor Swift concert tickets!” — Louise Sherman, Remote and Indigenous Support Team Manager

Scriptures for the Australian Defence Force

BSA supports chaplains in the Australian Defence Forces (ADF), providing camouflage Scriptures, ADF specialty books, and gospel materials through our annual Scripture Grant. We collaborate with ADF support ministries to create materials for Australian Defence Force Academy graduates to explore the Bible's relevance to their service. In August 2022, BSA took part in the Fellowship for Christian Military Ministries Day, with each partner sharing praise points and matters for prayer. Tri-Service Scripture resources:

ADF CEV Compact Bibles

ADF Devotionals

1,298 ‘My Story, My God’ Scriptures

2,425 copies of the tract '40 Scriptures for Life'

Along with other Army, Navy and RAAF Scriptures and resource

“In great news, we’ve had three soldiers join our Bible discussion recently. They didn’t have their own Bible, so we’ve given them one of the ’New beginnings Bibles.’ So good. So thankful for the generosity of BSA supporters!” — Peter

“I have had confirmed that the Christian material from BSA has arrived at its destination in the SW Pacific safe and sound... The current Chaplain over there is super excited to be well stocked and gives you his thanks!” — Julie, Military Chrisitan Fellowship

Bibles in Schools Grant

Through the Bibles in Schools Grant, BSA has had the joy of partnering with Scripture teachers and chaplains and with a Special Religious Education provider to put together the new CEV schools' Youth Compact Bible for distribution through this grant. It is easier to read and has an updated cover and custom pages. Through our Bibles in Schools Grant this financial year, were able to give away:

CEV Big Rescue Bibles

CEV Youth Bibles

Jesus Storybook Bibles

“The students were thrilled to have Bibles they could touch and look through, and then see where the week's story came from. They looked forward to being chosen to read the week's passage to the class. Every lesson the Bibles were handed out and right to the end of the year the children eagerly looked into their Bibles. Thank you for enabling such a privilege!” — Ena, RI instructor

“It's always really important to our team to ensure that students know that what we teach in Religious Instruction comes from God's word. So, when we are reading a passage or memory verse, we read it directly from the Bible before showing it on the screen or a poster. It has also inspired many students to ask parents if they can have a Bible at home.” — Mel, RI Instructor

Chaplains and Para-church Grant

BSA partnered with chaplains and supplied Scripture resources to:

Prison ministries

Hospital Chaplaincy teams

"Other" ministries

From July 2022–June 2023, BSA gave away Bibles and Scripture resources to front line gospel workers, including:

Bibles, including 2,900+ Bibles in languages other than English

New Testaments and Gospels

Christian Tracts

"There are 6-8 men in [this prison] who come regularly to the chapel for prayer and church services who have begun a new journey to come and know and love God more deeply. When they are back in their living quarters during the week and on weekends when the chapel is closed, they gather together in small groups and do some Bible study together ... This is made possible because of the generous grant that is provided for Bibles we as chaplains are able to give to the men." — Brett, prison chaplain QLD

"One patient approached me for a Bible. After he received his copy, he read it ... He hooked up with another Christian on the ward and they have started reading and studying the Bible together daily. They have gotten numerous studies off me (including one that the grant allowed me to purchase). The patient has told me he feels a peace in his life that he has never felt before and he has set his heart on being baptised and finding a church when he gets out." — Don, hospital chaplain

BSA Publishing In the past year, BSA developed and published new and targeted resources to help people engage with God’s word.

‘Peace, Strength, Unity and Hope’ minibooks of Scripture were reprinted, and 2,500 have already been distributed to hospital chaplains, in response to their requests. The New Beginnings Bible was reprinted in the last financial year, due its popularity with churches in Australia, the South Pacific and Asia. Copies were distributed at a heavily subsidised price to allow for gifting to new Christians.

BSA developed the Custom Bibles for Schools program, offering schools the chance to obtain affordable personalised School Bibles featuring their crest, hymn and prayer. 4,665 School Bibles were published for 11 schools. This program expanded to include Custom Bibles for other groups: •

Over 10,000 New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs waterproof editions for the ADF Army, Navy and Airforce

10,000 Gospels for Olive Tree Media’s Faith Runs Deep Ministry

5,000 Bibles for the Bible Society South Pacific

5,000 Bibles for the PNG Defence Force

8,000 Bibles for the Seventh-day Adventist Church Indigenous Ministries

”They look absolutely brilliant! We gave them out at our Year 12 Farewell Chapel service and the students signed their names in the back of each other’s Bibles afterwards.” — The Hutchins School

“We just received our shipment of Bibles. They turned out beautifully! School leadership is excited about them and they are going to be a great gift and tool for our Year 9 students.” — Cedar College

Acorn Press released two significant books aimed at enriching the Australian church, one addressing collective faithfulness and the other focusing on personal healing.

Keeping Faith by Stephen Judd, John Swinton and Kara Martin delves into the crucial elements of organisational faithfulness necessary to remain true to the way of Jesus. Drawing from extensive experience in practical theology, business and charity management, and faith–work integration, the authors have crafted an invaluable resource for Christian organisations. Australian leaders have endorsed Keeping Faith as an important resource to build and encourage Christian organisations, leaders, boards and management.

“... a brilliant diagnostic tool for analysing organisational theology and shows how organisations can remain faithful. Practical theology at its best, this book is a gift to any leader who longs to promote a gospel-infused culture in the organisation they lead.” — Dr Brian Rosner, Principal of Ridley College, Melbourne

My Father’s Son by Wayne Alcorn, senior pastor at Hope Centre Church in Queensland, is part-memoir and part-heart cry to Australian men. It tells the story of how God’s love heals the broken hearted, particularly those men carrying the ‘father wound.’ This book has garnered praise and use among men’s ministry leaders.

“... l cried, l laughed and felt humbled … it made me stand up and say this is about what I believe and striving for, and what all fathers and sons should also be striving for with God by their side.” — Men's Christian life group leader, QLD

“SIL and Bible Society Australia have long participated in partnership. This has become even more vital as we engage together in the Australian Bible Translation Collaboration, working together with Australian Indigenous people to see the Scriptures available in the languages they prefer ...” — David Nicholls PhD, Interim Director – SIL ATG, Associate Area Director, Pacific “Mission Educate values the partnership that we have with Bible Society Australia. We value the encouragement, advice and financial support that we receive to develop the Literacy for Life Project in Mozambique ... For centuries, Mozambicans suffered cruelly under an oppressive colonial power. Denied any form of education, it was impressed on them that they were worthless. The partnership with Bible Society Australia has had a liberating effect on many of the participants. They are very much aware that there are people they do not know, in a place they cannot imagine who are interested and contributing to their welfare. That there are people who see value in them. This has enabled the development of self-esteem as well as basic literacy skills. We are so grateful for this dynamic and supportive partnership which expresses those words that Jesus spoke: “For as much as you have done this for the least of these my people, you have done it for me” (Matthew 25:40). — Dr Terry King, Executive Director, Mission Educate “African Enterprise has partnered with Bible Society in making Jesus known through the Literacy and Reconciliation Project and JAAL project in Rwanda and Kenya. We are so grateful to be counted among other organisations that are partnering with Bible Society in making Jesus known among the nations.
