At SoCalGas®, we’re proud to partner with the building industry to supply energy-efficient new homes to our growing communities. During the past two years, we’ve worked with builders to install more than 70,000 residential natural gas meters throughout our service territory.

In 2021, 214 agreements with a total of 16,300 new single-family residential and multi-family units/lots enrolled in EENH. Once constructed, these enrollments from 2021 are expected to result in $14.5 M in direct incentive payments to participating homebuilders, equivalent energy savings to reducing over 7.7 metric tons of CO2 and reducing $2.4 M in utility bills.

The Energy Efficient New Homes Program is funded by Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) customers and administered by SoCalGas, under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. Once again, it’s that time of year. BIASC’s annual Building Industry Show is just around the corner. This year’s event will take place on September 14 and 15 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

BISprofessionals.hasbecome

Several years ago, BIASC leadership decided it was time to overhaul the traditional, predictable trade show format. We knew we had to provide attendees with a one-of-a-kind experience through education, inspiration, networking, and entertainment. Since then, BIS has become one of the most widely attended homebuilding industry trade shows on the West Coast, making it a can’t miss event for homebuilding

so popular that for the first time, we sold out all exhibitor booths several months in advance, leading us to expand this year’s show floor. Early registrations are also projecting BIS to break all previous records for attendance. This year’s show will feature a prestigious lineup of speakers along with opportunities for small businesses to connect with large homebuilders through our BIASC members-only Meet the Builder event on the show floor.

The night before the show, the BIS Kickoff Party will feature rock ‘n’ roll icon Sammy Hagar at the Anaheim House of Blues. There will also be a special appearance by BIASC’s own rock legend, Tri Pointe Homes’ Tom Grable. We also want our industry to know that being a BIASC member has its privileges, so be prepared for several special VIP surprises that will complement this year’s show.

BIS has always been about rising above expectations and providing an experience our exhibitors, sponsors, and members deserve. The Anaheim Convention Center and House of Blues are world-class entertainment venues, so we hope to elevate and build on the success of previous shows. Our 2022 Building Industry Show will be a memorable and epic experience that nobody will forget.

Industry Show – BIS – is just around the corner, on September 14 and 15 at the Anaheim Convention Center. BIS is most definitely not a “been there, done that” event; every BIS is a never-before occasion, starting with the exhibition floor. Builders will find never-before products to make their homes more in sync with current trends, along with new suppliers eager to prove their worth. Exhibitors will convert the Anaheim Convention Center floor into a real-time catalog of what’s next and what’s best, attracting both never-before and long-time customers alike to their booths.

A calendar this exciting is a sure sign of an Association that is doing well – and we are! Event revenue is up, membership is up, and of course, the all-important focus of BIASC – advocacy for our industry – is growing in strength and effectiveness. Why? Because we have such great members who are so deeply committed to the success of homebuilding in Southern California.

There is never-before fun in store for everyone, starting off with Wednesday night’s Kick-Off Party at the Anaheim House of Blues. The warm-up band is none other than the Southern California building industry’s favorite rock band, The Vinyl Four, with TRI Pointe Homes Division President Tom Grable tearing mean riffs on lead guitar. (For more on Tom’s rocker persona, see page 38.) The Vinyl Four will hand off the stage to a true Rock n’ Roll icon, Sammy Hagar, and his band, The Circle. From Montrose to Van Halen to The Circle, The Red Rocker has hard rock chops never before witnessed at a BIA event. You won’t want to miss this chance to see, hear and dance to a rock legend in The House of Blues’ intimate setting. Tickets are going fast so get yours today at buildingindustryshow.com.

To mark the 100th Anniversary of BIASC, this year’s Rose Parade Float was designed by participants of the Junior Builders program, a program formed in 2019 that engages with 10-15-year-old future builders. The design celebrates the BIASC’s 100th year by depicting the past, present and future of homes.

“We are proud to be the leading sponsor of BIASC’s float showcasing their long-standing commitment towards building innovative sustainable communities for families today and in the future,” said Scott Drury, Chief Executive Officer at SoCalGas. “What makes this even more special is participants in BIASC’s Junior Builders program designed and will ultimately construct this year’s Rose Parade float. SoCalGas is honored to support the next generation of builders in Southern California.”

“We are thrilled to unveil our Rose Parade float concept this year to celebrate our 100th anniversary by showcasing how we are building sustainable communities for today and our future,” said Jeff Montejano, Chief Executive Officer at BIASC. “Our Junior Builders have helped us to bring our commitment to sustainable communities to life with the innovative design and eventually with their work to construct the

I’ll

All you want to do is help people live the American Dream. So why all the obstacles and opposition?

But there is much more to be done as we improve this state. The BIA is a critical partner with government in that effort. Thank you for using your voice to advocate for your members, for sound public policies, and for a more secure future. You should all be proud of what you are doing for all of us.

In the coming years, how and what will we build will stand as our collective legacy. Not far from here in Anaheim Hills, Orange County will soon build its long-desired Veterans cemetery. I am privileged to have led the bipartisan effort that will forever honor our local heroes.

On behalf of the over 630,000 residents of my District, thank you for your hard work to better our neighborhoods and our lives.

Welcome

The BIA offers hope for a better future throughout California. You create jobs, housing, and opportunity. I appreciate the BIA’s mission to responsibly improve our backyards.

Wishing you all health and prosperity,

remember that BIS is as important to BIASC as it is to you. Our BIS exhibitors and sponsors contribute significantly to BIASC’s annual budget, and every member of our industry who attends is helping to make this year a bigger success than any of the many successful BIS shows that preceded it.

33| August 2022CaliforniaSouthern BUILDER

BIS is an industry show like no other. Its show floor and events give homebuilders multiple opportunities to get together with the people they do business with – or will soon do business with. Be assured that we homebuilders always look forward to discovering new products and services at BIS that will find their way into our new communities and companies. But BIS is more than that – it is also about relationships. For me and so many other homebuilders, BIS is where we have formed important new professional relationships and reconnected, especially after so much time apart.

This year, BIASC’s events team has exceeded the high expectations we have of them. The entertainment will be unbeatable, with the great Sammy Hagar and the Circle cranking up the volume at Wednesday’s kick-off party. He will step onto a House of Blues stage that will already be well warmed up by none other than own immediate BIASC Past Chair, Tom Grable, Division President of TRI Pointe Homes, and his band, The Four Vinyls.

See you at the Building Industry Show 2022… (Sorry Craig – not going to be on the dance floor!)

Tom Grable & The Vinyl Four Set to Rock House of Blues Ahead of Sammy Hagar

“Weballad.love

There is little doubt that The Vinyl Four won’t be ready for this gig. The band, which has been together for about six years, took its name from the vinyl records of the classic rock era and the Final Four of sports tournaments – a fitting name since they are all equally fanatic about sports and music. Grable is the guitarist, on bass is his long-time friend Dave McDonald – “the best bass player I’ve ever played with” – and Dave’s son Alex is the drummer. Together, they back up singer Tamsen Hughes, whose powerful voice and dynamic stage presence are equally suited to a Led Zeppelin rock anthem or a Heart

While Sammy Hagar and members of his band The Circle are enjoying the rock star-coddling comforts of the green room at the Anaheim House of Blues on September 14, someone well known to most BIASC members will be nervously plugging in his guitar on the popular venue’s main “Beingstage.Sammy

Hagar’s warm-up band for the BIS 2022 Kick-Off Party is a dream, but playing our music in front of family and friends in the industry puts a tremendous amount of pressure on me. I’m humbled by that, and I’m going to practice my butt off to make sure we’re ready to go,” said past BIASC Chair and Tri Pointe Homes Southern California Division President Tom Grable, who is also lead guitarist for The Vinyl Four.

“Warm Up Band” Is Understating It:

playing together, but never wanted to be a serious band that was performing every weekend,” Grable said. “Instead, we practice a lot, but only play

Given the reputation Grable has earned as our industry’s premier guitarist and rocker, ticket sales will be robust. In fact, it would be a good idea for you to buy yours today.

That spark was followed by a series of mostly marginal garage bands until his senior year in high school when he decided to get serious about the guitar. He lined up lessons with a college music student, Terence Elliot, now a successful studio musician. Elliot taught him the intricacies of music theory as applied to jazz guitar, creating a solid foundation for Grable’s expanding class rock guitar skills.

41| August 2022CaliforniaSouthern BUILDER

“It all worked out well, and now I totally enjoy these opportunities to entertain all my friends in the building industry,” he said. “In fact, after one of these BIA gigs, one of my friends said, “Tom, you’re good enough for this to be your Plan B.’ I said, ‘Are you kidding? This has always been Plan A. Homebuilding is Plan B.’”

Grable broke onto the BIA music scene in 2004 when the Orange County Chapter held its first talent show. “I was chair of the Program Committee, and we thought a show like this would be a big draw, but ticket sales were slow. Even though I hadn’t played live in about 20 years, the committee and staff decided I had to play, and they promoted me as the headliner.” Ticket sales promptly increased, and Grable closed out the show with Elton John’s Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting, a song that doesn’t have a lead guitar solo, which allowed him to provide his own killer solo, complete with a doubletapping Eddie Van Halen technique. According to Grable, “It worked out well. The crowd was very kind.”

EditionShowIndustryBuildingThe

Lucky for us that he has dedicated so much to his Plan B. Be sure to get your tickets soon for The Vinyl Four with Tom Grable … oh, and that other band, Sammy Hagar and The Circle. 

He followed that up with another talent show performance in 2005 that was the talk of the industry, as Grable had pulled a band together for the show that dazzled the audience with a hard rock version of War’s Low Rider, segueing into Thin Lizzy’s The Boys are Back in Town. For the 2007 show, Grable’s band teamed up with former BIASC president and 2022 Hall of Fame inductee Lucy Dunn for unforgettable versions of Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody to Love and Cream’s Crossroads in front of a House of Blues crowd of 500 from the building Grable’sindustry.

three or four times a year at events that are meaningful to us. So, while we fully intend to really warm up the crowd for Sammy Hagar and The Circle, to us it’s more about helping BIASC sell tickets and raise the money our Association needs for advocacy.”

much-anticipated return performance at the 2022 BIS Kick-Off Party would not be possible were it not for a junior high student named Lori. Grable, a year younger, had a mad crush on her, but as is all too common in the rough playing field of pre-teen romance, she was hardly aware of him. Desperate, he dreamed up a scheme to take guitar lessons from her and spent his lunch money to pay for the lessons after she agreed.

“I wasn’t the least bit interested in learning guitar, but I was very interested in getting to sit next to her for an hour on that small piano bench.”

of the year will be filled with many more valuable events from Evening Buzz’s with industry leaders to site tours of the latest and greatest developments in Orange County. In addition to NextGen-specific events, having a presence at the greater BIA events has proved fruitful to our members. We look forward to the knowledge and connections we will gain in these next few months and hope to see you all at the Building Industry Show!

Following our mentorship program, we have teamed up with different committees and councils throughout

This year we have seen a resurgence in our NextGen participation. Everyone has been eager to get involved in various forms whether that is planning events, volunteering, holding executive positions, or simply attending events. Our executive committee has doubled in size, bringing in new ideas and fresh perspectives. With that, we have offered a diverse range of events that expose NextGen members to topics and people that are making an impact in the industry. Our goal is to provide members with tools to excel in their respective careers while building lasting relationships. From happy hours to government affairs workshops, we have seen strong participation across the boards.

the summer to broaden our industry exposure and more crossover between the greater BIA organizations and NextGen. Some impactful events have included BIA Baldy View’s Emerging Leaders traveling to Orange County for a mixer with our executive committee, and a Council on Sage happy hour with NextGen that educated our members on their objectives.

On August 25, we are hosting a Government Affairs Happy Hour with elected officials who are running for re-election in November. Erik Nelson, BIA OC’s Chapter President, will be kicking off the event and each speaker with have an opportunity to share their background and city priorities. This is a rare opportunity for our members to engage with politicians from cities across Orange County in a casual

NextGen Update:

We recently wrapped up another successful mentorship program that pairs NextGen members with industry leaders. From September to June, the mentors and mentees switched off with one-on-one meetings and group meetings paired with discussion topics. Whether new to the industry, interested in learning about a different concentration, or want career advice, this program brings immense value. If are interested in participating as a mentor or mentee for our 2022-23 program, our applications will be released in August!
