What is Leadership & Academic All-Stars? The Coloradoan, in cooperation with Northern Colorado schools, created the Leadership and Academic All-Star Awards in 1996. The award honors outstanding students who have made significant contributions to their fellow students, schools and communities. This is a unique award in that it acknowledges the accomplishments of students who excel in academics,

P

demonstrate leadership and dedicate themselves to community service. This year marks the 19th anniversary of the Leadership and Academic All-Star Awards. The award was originally created because our readers, through their letters and editorials, crystallized the need for the Coloradoan and our community to celebrate the achievements of our best and brightest youth. The Coloradoan, along with our sister newspaper the Windsor Beacon, recognize that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. We salute students from across Northern Colorado who have made a difference in their community.

Patrick Laverty Canny

An artist with an eye toward engineering, business What are your plans after high school? I’m hoping to go to college to pursue a dual degree in mechanical engineering and business administration in order to eventually help engineers market their brilliant ideas to consumers more effectively. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? If I could do anything with the rest of my life, I would freely travel the world photographing different people from different cultures. I love to travel, and I love to explore people through one of my passions, photography. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I was the co-captain of my high school golf team and an avid participant in FIRST robotics, through which I was able to attend the world championships three times with my team. I’m also a member of National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl, Amnesty International and the TVHS chamber orchestra, one of the top-performing high school groups in the state. My favorite hobbies include photography; filmmaking; competitive yoyo (I’m the Colorado state champion and currently ranked 14th nationally); reading; writing poetry; disc golf; ping pong;

Kendama (Japanese ball-in-the-cup toy); and hiking. I’m also trying to take running more seriously, as of late. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? Seriously, who doesn’t love a nice egg scramble with a hot stack of pancakes on the side, and a glass of orange juice??? Nobody. That’s why I’d make lots of delicious breakfast foods for my friends. (Plus it’s the only kind of food I know how to cook...) Who do you look up to most and why?

“I love to travel, and I love to explore people through one of my passions, photography.”

I think the people I look up most to are my parents. They’ve been really good role models and motivators throughout the years, and have always been my biggest supporters in any endeavor I may try. I also look up to artist Chuck Close. He suffers from really severe paralysis, yet is able to make incredible works of art using his own techniques, which is really inspiring to me. He’s also really vivid in his opinions about how he believes that inspiration isn’t something stumbled upon, but rather a result of putting in hard work to create your own inspiration. That attitude has always been really powerful for me, and a good reminder that it’s so important to put in hours of work if you expect a beautiful result. Leadership and Academic All-Stars 2015 « 3

Studying the “big” questions of the universe

A

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend Colorado School of Mines to major in engineering. Right now I’m considering majoring in mechanical or chemical engineering. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? I’m interested in a lot of things so it would be hard to pick one. I would like to study the “big” questions of science. Like unifying the fundamental forces; what is dark matter; or really anything related to quantum mechanics. If there ever is a project to go to Mars, I would want to be part of it. I also would like to write science fiction novels. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I participate in cross country, track, soccer, Knowledge Bowl (competitive trivia team), orchestra, National Honor Society and Peer Academic Support (peer tutoring group).

If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? I would most likely make guacamole. It’s one of my favorite foods and my friends like it too. We’re usually pretty casual when we hang out. We usually talk, watch movies or play board games. We like to eat food that doesn’t require sitting at a table to eat. Who do you look up to most and why? I admire Micheal Faraday. He was an amazing scientist, even without much education. He also overcame his poverty and mental illness when he was older

“I would like to study the “big” questions of science. Like unifying the fundamental forces; what is dark matter; or really anything related to quantum mechanics.”

Tully Peltola Henke

A life-long backpacker of the world What are your plans after high school? At the moment, the spring of 2015, I am taking a semester of classes at the University of Salamanca In Spain. I then plan on most likely going to college in the U.S. or Canada, perhaps taking a year off prior to attending or as a break in the middle. After that I may go into education or wilderness exploration and/or conservation after traveling for as long as I can. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? If I could do anything for the rest of my life I would backpack. I feel really at home in the outdoors and I would love to spend my life hiking through, and living in, the backcountry and exploring quaint little villages around the world. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I rock climb, backpack, and play piano, guitar and a variety of other instruments. Other hobbies of mine include photography, traveling and studying languages. I also love ornithology, and abstract and field sciences. I have tutored

math part time on and off and I have been going to a wilderness expedition camp (YMCA Camp Menogyn) in northern Minnesota for the past five summers. I did my last trip with them — a 50-day backpacking trip to Alaska, this past summer. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? If something was going on that required a full meal I would maybe make a curry with rice or quinoa to put it over. I enjoy making curries, and I think they are a rather good group dish. Perhaps a side dish such as oven-roasted asparagus as well. I really enjoy cooking with other people though and, depending on who I was with, I would likely cook with them. Who do you look up to most and why? This is a somewhat difficult question for me. I look up to the people in my life for different reasons. I guess, perhaps, the most appropriate answer is to say that I most look up to the people that I love. I have a lot of inspiring people in my life and I am fortunate enough to not have to look any further than my friends and family to find people that I admire and look up to.

“I feel really at home in the outdoors and I would love to spend my life hiking through, and living in, the backcountry and exploring quaint little villages around the world.”

The dancer passionate about other cultures

A

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend college to earn a bachelor’s degree in international business or international relations. I will become fully fluent in both Spanish and French. Later on, I will attend graduate school to earn an MBA. I hope to work in a global setting and collaborate with other nations. I have been accepted to Brown University. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Growing up in a global household has ignited my passion for learning about other cultures and perspectives. I was born in Ecuador and visit my dad and his side of the family in Venezuela frequently. I love experiencing other cultures to gain a new way to see the world. I believe that the ability to channel new perspectives is the only way we can truly connect with other people and become socially aware. I hope to be able to travel and learn from other people’s lives the rest of my life. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? Ever since my mom and I moved to the U.S. when I was three years old, I have danced. My mom originally put me in ballet classes to learn English, but it quickly progressed from being a learning tool to a lifelong passion. This year I decided to expand my horizons by cutting back on dance and pursuing 6 » Leadership and Academic All-Stars 2015

new leadership opportunities, such as with National Art Honor Society and Art Service Club, as well as adding work experience to my resume. My dad and I are currently trying to develop a new business idea through an app to promote safe driving. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? Well ... I can’t cook, so I would probably make the bestordered pizza ever! Cooking simply isn’t in my family genes. My mother and father can’t cook, and their parents before them never could either. Plus, I really do love pizza. It has all of the main food groups: grains, vegetables, protein, dairy and even fruit, if you count tomatoes or add pineapple. Who do you look up to most and why? I look up to my Venezuelan grandmother, Tulia López, most. She grew up extremely poor and illiterate, but she never let her adversity keep her from living her life the way she wanted to. She is the most resilient and caring person I know. I hope to be like her. She is tenacious in her thoughts and beliefs and ceaseless in her optimism for a better Venezuela and a brighter future. My abuela taught me the importance of believing in yourself, never giving up and never losing sight of what is right.

“I believe that the ability to channel new perspectives is the only way we can truly connect with other people and become socially aware.”

A future test engineer with a passion for travel What are your plans after high school? After high school, I plan to major in mechanical engineering, with the eventual desire to pursue my doctorate degree. I also hope to study abroad during college. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? I would love to have a career as a test engineer and spend my free time traveling the world. The role of a test engineer is a person who solves engineering problems after a product is introduced and used on the market. When I am not solving problems, I love to learn about foreign cultures and would love to visit these exotic places. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? My main extracurricular activities are Key Club and sports. Key Club provides me with a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and has helped to develop me as a

leader, currently serving as president of our club. I also love to participate in high school sports, namely cross country and swimming. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? I would make basil pesto pasta and a chocolate dessert. Basil pesto pasta is one of my signature dinner recipes. It is simple to make and a joy to eat with friends and family. I tend to mix it up when it comes to dessert as I love to bake. But one thing is for sure, there will be some chocolate element. Who do you look up to most and why?

“I would love to have a career as a test engineer and spend my free time traveling the world.

I look up to my parents the most because no matter what kind of a day they may have had, they are always willing to sit down and listen. They exhibit patience and kindness on a daily basis, no matter the circumstances, and push me to be a better adult. They are amazing role models for how to act, behave and live.

Medical school? Or a job teaching art on the beach? S What are your plans after high school? After high school I plan to attend a university (not sure which one yet), study abroad and travel, attend graduate school (possibly medical school) and find a job. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? If I could do anything for the rest of my life I would live on the beach, teach art at an elementary or middle school, and coach track. This would be a very simple, peaceful lifestyle. I love the beach and I adore working with kids. I think art is fun. In elementary and middle school everyone gets the opportunity to take art, regardless of skill or talent. I also have a passion for running and I think it would be fun to coach young athletes. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I play tennis, ski, hike, practice yoga and swim. I am a Student Council officer and an ambassador (peer counselor) at my school. Currently, I do not work but I have worked in retail and at a summer camp for kids in middle

school. I like to read, write, dance and spend time with friends and family. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? If my friends were coming over and expecting dinner I would make homemade mac ‘n cheese. This delicious meal is easy to prepare and even the pickiest of eaters among my friend group will enjoy it. Mac ‘n cheese is comfort food and especially yummy when it’s baked in the oven with breadcrumbs on top. Who do you look up to most and why? I look up to my older cousin, Sam, more than anyone. Sam is two years older and from the time we were tiny I’ve always aspired to be like her. Sam has a contagious passion for life, she works hard and always has fun. She is beautiful, charismatic, witty and smart. She attends Georgetown University in Washington D.C. where she studies international relations and plays tennis. Sam and I have great relationship. I know I can always ask her for advice or help. She is less like a cousin and more like the older sister I never had.

Swimmer in the water, future scientist on land What are your plans after high school? After high school, I want to attend a college and major in engineering or physics (maybe both), with a possibility of minoring in business, marketing and/or leadership. Then I want to attend graduate school and earn my Ph.D. Then I would like to work with engineering and/or physics in the private sector or conducting research at a university. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? It is cliché, but I would love to travel the world. There are so many different cultures and perspectives in this world that I would love to see, experience and understand. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I swim for Loveland High School and Loveland Swim Club. I played soccer for LHS my junior year. I am a member of the LHS student council, DECA chapter and National Honor Society. Outside of school, I am a member of the City of Loveland Youth Advisory Commission and the student representative for the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented State Board. I work as a ranch hand at Deer Valley Alpacas and a camp counselor at Loveland Sports Day Camp. I also do the payroll for the Rainbow Restaurant

and Catering, as well as helping out neighbors, friends and family with yard or house work. Sometimes, I will also teach private swim lessons. In the little free time that I don’t have, I enjoy reading a good book, especially mythology and history. I love to ride bikes and camp. Tubing behind a speed boat is one of my favorite summer time activities. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? I would cook a nice, juicy bison steak. There is no better meat, in my opinion, than bison. I would carve up a watermelon to accompany it, because watermelon is simply the best. Who do you look up to most and why?

“There are so many different cultures and perspectives in this world that I would love to see, experience and understand.”

I greatly look up to Reid Maynard. I met Reid through student council my freshman year. I had the privilege of witnessing Reid lead in council, the youth advisory commission and everywhere he went. Reid set the example in all areas of his life through his incredible spirit, discipline and work ethic. Reid accomplished a great many things, and always did so with grace and humility. The characteristics that I see in Reid are those that I strive to embody: a strong work ethic, humility, discipline, kindness, knowledge, wisdom, leadership and so much more. What are your plans after high school? Attend college and major in vocal performance with an emphasis in musical theater. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? I would choose music if I could do anything for the rest of my life, because music brings people together. It creates and renews life and is a background for many stories that have been or are waiting to be written. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I am involved in track and field as a thrower. I play piano as a hobby and I love to travel. I am not currently working, but hope to have a job during the summer!

If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? If my friends were coming over I would make barbecue chicken! It’s delicious and makes for happy conversations about how messy we all are! Who do you look up to most and why? I look up to my mother and my father most. My mom is a survivor of breast cancer of 17 years, and my dad is my biggest inspiration and supporter to work hard and pursue my dreams. They have both taught me that life has so many opportunities and if I work hard I will be able to “shoot for the stars and land amongst them!” They are my biggest supporters, and I look up to them and love them both very much.

Suraj Renganathan

Our future secretary of state makes ramen What are your plans after high school? After high school, I plan on majoring in international relations and public policy in college. My ultimate ambition is to join the U.S. State Department as a foreign diplomat. My parents used to tell me that, ever since I was child, I used to claim that I would one day become secretary of state; perhaps I can one day accomplish this dream. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Without any hesitation, I know that I would choose to host the “Daily Show,” if given the option to do only one thing for the rest of my life. Other than the fact that it is my favorite TV show, I feel that the “Daily Show” and similar satirical programs play an integral role in modern political and societal discourse, posing the questions and delving into the issues that news networks do not address. Through humor, Jon Stewart is able to provide valuable insight in a unique manner. I too would love to be involved in this process, while making people laugh at the same time. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? Politics is my passion, so I have tried to get involved in governmental and policy-making affairs as much as

possible. I currently serve as the treasurer of my high school’s National Honor Society chapter, am chairman of the City of Fort Collins Youth Advisory Board, serve as a Board Member on the Poudre School District Student Think Tank, and was a student representative to the City of Fort Collins Climate Action Plan Citizen Advisory Board. Moreover, I am an avid tennis fan and player, competing on my high school varsity team, and teach the Tabla (a traditional Indian hand-drum) in my local community. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? Instant Ramen noodles. Unfortunately, it is the only food item I personally know how to cook. I would apologize to my friends in advance before serving them their “meal.” In order to cook anything else, I would need my mother’s assistance. Who do you look up to most and why? My older brother is an individual in my life whom I look up to. From teaching me how to draw VSEPR diagrams in chemistry, to editing my college essays, my brother has guided me toward achieving excellence in my endeavors by allowing me to learn from both his successes and failures. He has been a mentor for me throughout my life and, especially, in high school, serving as a positive influence for me to emulate and model myself after.

Looking at a path from the shoulders of giants

R

What are your plans after high school? I plan to serve a two-year mission with my church in order to give back to the organization that has had a huge influence on my life. Upon returning I hope to attend a fouryear university to pursue a degree in engineering or biomedical sciences. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Play football with all of my best friends from high school. This last year playing on the Rocky football team has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have never had so much fun or so much success, and being able to share all of that with my best friends is something that I will never forget. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I am a part of Peer Counselors; football; Boy Scouts of America (I recently received my Eagle designation); the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; Mu Alpha Theta; National Honor Society; and a mentoring program for at-risk freshmen. I have also been a part of the basketball and track teams at Rocky but didn’t compete this year due to injuries from football. For work I am a tournament site director with Triple Crown Sports. 12 » Leadership and Academic All-Stars 2015

If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? Pancakes with strawberries and Cool Whip. It is my specialty and I even mess that up sometimes, but anyways, what is most important to remember with my friends is that they love to eat and they eat a lot. The advantage of pancakes is not only are they easy to make but you can pump them out at a very high rate and keep your diners satisfied. The Cool Whip and strawberries are a nice alternative to your average syrup and a family tradition of mine that will be sure to put a smile on their faces. Who do you look up to most and why? I think Sir Issac Newton sums up my thoughts the best, when he said, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” I have had so many mentors and counselors in my life who have helped me to become the young man I am today, and I look up to them all and hold them with utmost regard. Whether it is Mr. Smailes, my English teacher for the past two years, who has pushed me to grow beyond what I thought I was capable of doing; or Mrs. Kilness, who has fostered in me a giving spirit, where I have found a great deal of joy in helping and building up others; or even my coaches, who taught me to give my very best effort at all times, both on and off the field. There are still countless others who deserve recognition and I will never be able to give justice to what they have done to support me.

“This last year playing on the Rocky football team has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have never had so much fun or so much success...”

Mohini Tangri

Ridgeview’s philosopher at heart What are your plans after high school? I am still deciding between colleges, but my long-term plan is to go into medical research and find better ways to treat different types of cancer. I know that sounds cliche, but cancer has become personal for me because of the effects it has had on some of my closest friends’ family members. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? If I could be a philosopher for the rest of my life, I would. I love contemplating the complexity of life, the beauty of our existence and the purpose of everything that we do. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? I am a part of the Poudre School District Think Tank; the City Youth Advisory Board; Student Council; Science Bowl; Hoplite Helpers (volunteering); Mock Trial; etc. A lot of my free time is spent hanging out with (and playing pranks on) my lovely sister.

If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? Probably Indian food, because they love it even though they turn bright red because of the spiciness. Who do you look up to most and why? Otto von Bismarck. He was nearly assassinated at pointblank range, but he charged the man who was shooting at him, threw him to the ground and walked away with minimal wounds. That takes an amount of presence of mind and fearlessness I only hope to achieve in the future.

“If I could be a philosopher for the rest of my life, I would. I love contemplating the complexity of life, the beauty of our existence and the purpose of everything that we do.”

The promising Army helicopter pilot What are your plans after high school? After high school I will be attending the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. While training to become an Army officer, I plan to earn a double major in psychology and leadership development with a minor in military science. I hope to become a psychological operations officer and if I earn the opportunity, I would like to become a helicopter pilot. If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? If I could do anything for the rest of my life it would be to continue to serve others because, through service, we put other’s needs before our own and stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. I plan to serve in the Army for my entire career but, when I retire, I want to live in the Rocky Mountains because they are my favorite place to be. Also, having grown up in Colorado, I have witnessed the destruction and loss wildfires can cause and would like to fly an air tanker or helicopter for an aerial firefighting team. What extracurricular activities, work and/or hobbies do you do? My extracurricular activities include WHS Student Council (student body co-president, head girl); National FFA 14 » Leadership and Academic All-Stars 2015

Organization (chapter secretary); WHS Super Fan; Interact Club; Honor Society; United Way of Weld County Youth Allocations Committee Member; cross-country; as well as basketball and track. My work experience has included life guarding and teaching swimming lessons at the Chimney Park Pool. Hobbies I enjoy include drawing, hiking in the mountains, being outdoors, lifting weights and spending time with friends and family. If friends were coming over and you had to cook, what would you make and why? If friends were coming over and I had to cook I would make macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets and chocolate milk because that’s the one meal I can actually cook. It’s a really good thing that I will be served meals in a mess hall or given Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) while in the Army! Who do you look up to most and why? Although it sounds cliché, the person I look up to the most is my mom because she has taught me that with hard work and dedication you can achieve your dreams. Along with my dad, she has demonstrated selflessness and service to others, nurtured my values and beliefs, supported me in all of my endeavors and has provided me with the opportunities I have needed to be successful.
