TAKE ME OUT TO THE The Spearfish Sasquatch begins its third season in the Expedition League, an elite summer collegiate wood bat baseball league. In February 2020, Eric Schmidt purchased the Spearfish Sasquatch from Steve Wagner, who is also the Expedition League CEO and president. The Sasquatch did not play in 2020 due to restrictions being in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was definitely a difficult decision to make, but in the end it was the right one,” said Schmidt. “It was hard to tell players, coaches, interns, and employees that we had to shut it down.” Schmidt said he appreciated the support the team got through the pandemic. “Our partners and our sponsors stayed behind us, and we look to come back stronger than ever in 2021,” Schmidt said. Schmidt said big things are being planned for 2021 season. “We are going to up our level of

entertainment both on the field during games, and the theme nights. We want to keep every bodies head on a swivel every night,” Schmidt said. “And of course we are going to bring in a very competitive team that is going to play for a championship this summer.” Schmidt said he is confident 2021 season will be played. “We are planning to play, 100%. Last year there were restrictions in place that prevented us from playing, but now there are no restrictions, so I’m confident we will play this season,” Schmidt said Players live with host families in Spearfish and get involved in the community through a variety of ways. They read to school children, participated in local parades, and their mascot, Sampson the Sasquatch, served as a bell ringer during the annual Salvation Army’s kettle campaign. The Sasquatch open the 2021 season in late May. n
