Simplifying Sire Selection with Readily Available Data

ire selection does not need to be overwhelming or complex, according to Matt Spangler, Nebraska Extension Beef Genetics Specialist. Centuries of work by geneticists and statisticians have allowed for the development of tools that help producers make decisions relative to the next bull you purchase; do not ignore them. The key questions that every rancher needs to answer are: 1. W hat are my breeding/marketing goals?

2. What traits directly impact the profitability of my enterprise? 3. Are there environmental constraints that dictate the level of performance that is acceptable for a given trait in my enterprise? Once these three questions are answered, sire selection becomes much simpler. The answers to these questions inherently lead a producer to the traits that are economically relevant to their enterprise. We call these traits Economically Relevant Traits (ERT).

Fundamentally, these are traits directly associated with a revenue stream or a cost. All traits that are not ERTs are indicator traits, or a trait that is genetically correlated to an ERT but not an ERT itself. Classic examples of indicator traits include ultrasonic carcass measurements and birth weight. Ultrasonic carcass measurements are a non-destructive measure of traits such as intramuscular fat percentage (IMF). Producer do not receive premiums for IMF levels, rather premiums (and discounts) are applied to quality grades. Assuming that carcass maturity values are the same, actual carcass marbling is the driver of quality grade. Although IMF is genetically correlated to carcass marbling it is not the ERT. Birth weight is another great example of an indicator trait. Selection to decrease birth weight in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of dystocia is practiced by numerous commercial bull buyers. However, birth weight does not have a direct revenue source or cost associated with it. Continued on page 3

Calving-ease is related to the level of assistance needed during a calving event. Although the two are related, the genetic correlation between calving ease and birth weight is only between -0.6 and -0.8, suggesting that birth weight only explains 3664 percent of the genetic differences between animals for calving difficulty.

Multiple Trait Selection

Selecting to improve multiple traits simultaneously can be cumbersome. Open up any sale catalog, and it is easy to become confused. Economic indices can help alleviate this confusion. An economic index is a collection of EPDs weighted by their economic value such that traits with greater impacts on production goals have a larger economic weight associated with them. The basic equation of an economic index is: I=EPD1 x a1 +EPD2 x a2 + EPD3 x a3 + EPDn x an. Where ‘I’ is

the index value; ‘EPDn’ is the EPD for trait ‘n’; and ‘an’ is the economic weight associated with the trait ‘n’. A full description of all available economic indexes can be found in the University of Nebraska NebGuide G1847 available at: http://beef/unl. edu/nebguides

Choosing an Index to Use

When making selection decisions based on economic indices, it’s important to consider your particular breeding objective and the traits that will achieve desired production goals. For instance, if your production goals included retaining replacements and selling cull heifers and steer progeny at weaning, then an index that assumes all offspring are sold on a grid-based system is inappropriate for your operation. It’s also important to know the breed average values for particular indexes and to use percentile ranks to determine how far above or below average a particular animal is compared to the rest of the breed.

pring has finally arrived and everything is starting to come to life. The grass is beginning to turn green and it won’t be long before we can smell the scent from the apple trees. When the lilacs bloom in our

yard, it reminds me of my early days, growing up in Worthington, Minnesota. I loved the smell of the lilac bushes that were below my bedroom window. Spring gives us hope for rejuvenation in our own lives. It’s a time to renew the excitement and zest for life after the long, cold winter. Although the winter was milder in our area than in previous years, there were still many dreary days. Even though many people do not like Daylight Saving Time, I think it is nice to see the sunlight late into the evening. It brightens your spirit when you are driving in the sunshine rather than the darkness that comes so early in the long winter months.

A trip to the Dairy Queen is always fun on a warm, spring or summer day. Here is a recipe based on one of their popular items, the Buster Bar. Bev Summerbell

Buster Bar Dessert 1 pkg., 9 oz., Hydrox or Oreo cookies, crushed ½ cup melted butter *Mix and pat in the bottom of a 9x13 pan, freeze for one hour. 2 cups powdered sugar 2/3 cup chocolate chips 1 ½ cups evaporated milk ½ butter

*Boil for 8 minutes, stirring constantly. *Add 1 tsp. vanilla *Let chocolate mixture cool. ½ gallon ice cream – I used vanilla *Place ice cream on top of the crust. *Sprinkle 1 ½ cups Spanish peanuts over ice cream. *Top with chocolate sauce and freeze.

The sale season is coming to an end. It is always a pleasure to be able to travel around the Heartland meeting seedstock and commercial breeders. It’s fun to take pictures of the buyers as well as those attending the sale; however, there are times when I get so busy I forget to write down names or addresses. When that happens, we spend hours at home trying to figure out who they are, what they bought and where they are from. You would think that after 15 years of doing this we would have a better system in place. Our focus will soon shift from the sales to the junior shows. The juniors who were showing when we started with the Heartland job back in August of 2001 have now grown up and many are married. There is a new generation of young people starting to show. It’s fun to watch them develop over the years. We were saddened to hear of the tragic death of Jordan (Straight) Muxfeldt and the twins March 14, 2016. She was an amazing young lady with a strong faith and she touched many lives. She will be missed at the Limousin shows and cattle sales, not only in our area, but across the country. We received a very nice book of poetry from Bill Stoner of Miami,

Oklahoma, when we were at the GV sale in Garnett, Kansas. His book, “Footsteps,” is a collection of poems spanning more than 50 years. Bill, a former executive who is now a rancher raising all-natural beef, wrote this book of poetry based on the richness of his own life experiences. The poems radiate a deep faith and trust in God no matter what comes his way. Bill believes that these poems were divinely inspired. His hope is that they will touch your spirit, uplift you, and bring you peace. Dean and I want to thank Bill and his wife, Joy, for giving us this lovely book of poetry.

Member News Our thoughts are with Reed and Jenna (Moser) Kampmeier of Chokio, Minnesota. Their son, Weston, was born January 25, 2016, and has been in the hospital since his birth. Weston was released from Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota April 4. His breathing and feeding issues have improved and he was able to go home to Morris. We also continue to keep Cash and Amanda Schilling of Edson, Kansas, in our prayers. Their baby, Chasyn Cash, was born January 28, 2016, and is still in the hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Although he weighed less than 2 lbs. at birth, the family reports that he is gaining every day, he is up to 5 lbs. 3 oz. Get well wishes are sent to Phil Shipman of Girard, Kansas. He recently spent time in the hospital. We hope he is “on the road to recovery.” We are also thinking about Vernon Long of Afton, Iowa. He had quadruple

bypass surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, February 15. We extend our best wishes and hope that he is getting stronger every day. Noreen Wieczorek of Mount Vernon, South Dakota, had shoulder replacement surgery and is now recovering. Noreen was in rehab at the time of their sale and was not able to attend. Paul Millhollin of East Peru, IA, is recovering from shoulder surgery. Desiree Garcia of Berryton, KS, underwent surgery for breast cancer in February. It was nice to see her at the GV sale-. Our sympathy is extended to the many families who have lost loved ones in the past few months. There are several obituaries printed in this issue of the Heart Beat. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

She said she would like to spend time in the schools, educating students on the source of their food. Joanna is involved with her local FFA and 4-H clubs, serving in a variety of offices. She has competed in several FFA Career Development Events including Market Plan at the national convention. In addition, she is currently serving as secretary of the Minnesota Junior Limousin Association. Joanna enjoys showing cattle, sheep and pigs at the local, state, regional and national levels. She stated that exhibiting cattle has allowed her to network with many people from across the country. She was selected as the West Central Cattleman’s Association Beef Princess and she received the Riverview Ag Advocate Scholarship. Joanna said that she has been able to promote the beef industry through both of these organizations.

embers of the Iowa Junior Limousin Association will travel to Dunlap, Iowa, for their annual field day. The event will take place June 4-5, 2016, at the Harrison County Fairgrounds. They are asking for board members to arrive Friday, June 3 to help with the setup, preparation in the barns, and the show ring. There will be a meal Saturday evening for all juniors, their families, and other Limousin friends. Everyone is asked to bring bars or cookies for the meal and the weekend activities. The Iowa junior association and will have a meeting following the meal. At this time, the juniors will be discussing the Heartland Regional Show and preparing for the NALJA show in Lexington, Kentucky, in July. The show will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, June 5. In Memoriam Jordan Linn (Straight) Muxfeldt, 27, of Logan, Iowa, passed away March 14, 2016, due to a tragic accident. She is the daughter of Jay and Lori Straight of Straight Limousin, Logan. Her twin babies, Whitley Leah and Waylon Jay, were also welcomed into God’s loving arms that day. Services were held March 21, 2016, at the Christian Church Family Life Center in Logan. She graduated from LoganMagnolia High School in 2006 and attended Iowa State University. Jordan loved to work with and show cattle as well as riding her horse. She served on the National Limousin Show Committee, which helps line up shows and judges. In 2014, Jordan was elected as the “Herdsman of the Year” at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Jordan won many grand and reserve grand champion banners over the years. Her first NALJA banner came at the 2003 show in Springfield, Missouri. She took home the reserve grand champion title with her purebred female, JSTH Angel’s Centerfold. In 2007, she took home the reserve grand champion banner at the show in West Monroe, Louisiana, with SL Dream Walkin. SL Luck Be A Lady was lucky for Jordan in 2010 when she took home the reserve grand champion banner in Hutchinson, Kansas. She also won banners with her purebred bulls. In 2007, at the show in West Monroe, Louisiana, she had the grand champion bull with SL Thunder Struck. She followed up in 2008 with the reserve grand champion bull at the show in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with SL Tradewind. One of the highlights of her career in the show ring was taking home the Showmanship titles. In 2003, she won the Intermediate Division banner in Springfield, Missouri, and

in 2010 took home the Senior Division Showmanship title at the NALJA Show in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was an active member of the Iowa Junior and Senior Limousin Associations. Jordan also served as a mentor to many young people just starting out showing Limousin cattle. Three years ago Jordan began raising and showing Miniature Australian Shepherds. At her first National Dog Show, she and her dog were recognized as the National Grand Champion. Jordan helped start the Iowa Miniature Australian Shepherd Association. Jordan was preceded in death by her son, Westyn Muxfeldt; grandfathers, Jack Straight and Robert Pond; and niece, Jaylee Myer. She is survived by her husband, Shane Muxfeldt; son, Wayde; parents, Jay and Lori Straight; two grandmothers, Sondra Straight and Rosemary Pond; siblings, Jamie (Scott) Myer, Jenelle (Adam) Kline and Jackson Straight (fiancé, Cheyann Shelton), all of Logan, IA and Brian Bauer of Marshfield, MO. She is also survived by parents-in-law, Scott and Leah Muxfeldt of Logan, IA; brother-in-law, Reid (Julia) Muxfeldt of Benson, MN; nieces and nephews Brayton, Brendyn and Bryce Myer; Brooklyn, Karsyn, Hudsyn, and Dixsyn Kline, baby girl Straight; and many other relatives and friends.

Iowa Holds 40th Beef Expo in Des Moines Iowa celebrated a banner anniversary holding their 40th Beef Expo in Des Moines February 1421, 2016, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The Iowa Limousin Association participated in the Expo with their bull and female show February 16 and the sale February 17. Consignors from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin brought 38 bulls and 15 females to the Expo.

Joel Edge of West Liberty, Iowa, judged the saleorder show. He named SL Copperhead Road consigned by Straight Limousin of Logan, IA, as the grand champion Lim-Flex bull. He is a 2/2/15 black, double polled 75% Lim-Flex son of EF Xcessive Force out of SL Lady Gone Right.

RGMA Crossfire 9519C, a 2/14/15 double black, double polled 50% Lim-Flex son of S A V Brilliance 8077 out of RGMA Gianna 5109W was selected as the reserve grand champion Lim-Flex bull. He was consigned by Anderson Limousin of Garner, IA.

The grand champion purebred bull was consigned by Shelby Skinner of Bolivar, MO. SHSK Clark Griswold 502C is a 2/17/15 homozygous black, polled son of MAGS Xyloid out of CJSL Whispering Wind 9049.

Kansas News… Junior Field Day in Garnett

embers of the Kansas Junior Limousin Association will hold their annual field day May 21, 2016, at the Anderson Co. Fairgrounds in Garnett. The show will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by a meal for all juniors, their families, friends and other Limousin enthusiasts. The day begins with the 22nd Annual Grand Finale Spring Beef Show with the Kansas Field Day to follow. The judge will be Clint Woodrow from Emporia, Kansas. We thank the Ratliff family for providing the roast beef and cheesy potatoes and the Richardson family

for the baked beans and rolls for the dinner Saturday evening, May 21. All members are asked to bring a salad and a dessert. Drinks, plates and utensils will be provided. The hotel in Garnett is full due to a wedding. As a result, the nearest motels will be in Ottawa.

Grand Finale Spring Beef Show

The 22nd annual show will be Saturday, May 21 at the Anderson Co. Fairgrounds in Garnett. The entry fee is $20/head before May 13 or $30 after May 13. Steers and heifers must be owned and shown by the exhibitor.

Exhibitors must be 19 years of age or under as of January 1, 2016. Outof-state cattle must have registration papers and health papers current within 30 days. The barns open at 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 20. Steers will be weighed-in and heifers checked-in from 7:00-8:30 a.m. Judging begins with the heifers at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Generators are encouraged, but they must be placed outside the barn. The grand champion steer and the supreme champion heifer will each receive a $300 cash prize, the reserve champion steer and the reserve champion heifer will take home $200 each. A total of 75 percent of the entry fees will be paid back in class winnings. Kansas Breeders at NWSS

The Kansas Limousin Association was well represented at the National Western Stock Show in Denver in January. Schilling Limousin of Edson exhibited cattle in the open show on the Hill and took home the reserve grand champion banner in the bull show. Ashlee Corns of Eureka swept the banners in the junior show with her purebred females, taking both the grand and reserve grand champion banners. A class winner in the junior show with his purebred female was Tanner Walden of Tonganoxie. In the LimFlex female show, class winners were Eva Hinrichsen of Westmoreland and Garrett Walden of Tonganoxie. Morgan Wise of Topeka won a class in the open show with her female.

Ratliff Wins Supreme Title Madison Ratliff of Westphalia, Kansas, swept two rings to be named supreme champion female at the KSU AGR Block and Bridle Kick-Off Show in Hutchinson, Kansas, February 26-28, 2016. Her heifer is Riverstone Charmed 50C, a 1/31/2015 black, polled, purebred sired by TMCK Durham Wheat 6030X out of HSF Your Fantasy. They beat out 185 other heifers for this honor.

Minnesota News… Annual Meeting Held in Litchfield

embers of the Minnesota Limousin Association (MLA) gathered at the VFW Club in Litchfield Saturday, March 12, 2016, for their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction. The day began with a social hour followed by a delicious dinner. Roger Wagner welcomed everyone to the meeting, introduced veterans in attendance as well as guests. Following the meal, Mark and Sharilyn Willette, secretary/treasurer, read the minutes and gave the treasurer’s report. A report was given on the 2015 Heartland Junior Regional Show held in Fairmont. A special thanks was given to Merle Anderson, Don Biscoe, the Dohrmann family, John and Alice Goelz, Brad Kaiser, the Moser family, Roger and Donna Potter, Phyllis Smith, Roger and Nancy Wagner and Mark and Sharilyn Willette for their

generous donation toward the Friday evening meal. We also thank Ag Star and Big Gain Feeds for the paper plates, silverware and napkins. We appreciate everyone who helped serve the meal and work on the day of the show. It was a very successful weekend! Don Biscoe gave a report on the 2015 Minnesota State Fair and the 4-H auction. Kevin Bachmeier reported on the 2015 Minnesota Beef Expo. He also stated that we are in need of a donation heifer for the 2016 Beef Expo. Branstyn Peterson of Gibbon, the recipient of the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience heifer donated by the Moser family, talked about his experiences working with cattle. Anna Johnson, Minnesota junior association president and secretary of the NALJA board of directors, gave an update on the activities of the juniors this past year. She reported on the upcoming Heartland Regional Show June 1011 in Springfield, Missouri, and the NALJA Show July 8-14 in Lexington, Kentucky. NALJA is also planning to host another POWER Conference in conjunction with the Gelbvieh juniors. The dates for this year’s conference in Manhattan, Kansas, will be August 4-7, 2016. The new officers for 2016 are Anna Johnson, president; Wiley Fanta, vicepresident; Joanna Moser, secretary.

Green Acres Named 2016 Minnesota “Commercial Producer of the Year”

iscoe Green Acres Farm started in 1967 when they purchased Don’s grandparent’s farm in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. At that time, his grandfather had dairy cows and a few Angus cow. The family started with Hereford bulls on their cows; however, they had calving problems. In addition, they

also had issues with pinkeye, prolapsed uteri and large teats that prevented the calves from getting milk. At this point, they thought they would get out of the cattle business until a friend told them that a Limousin bull would fix many of the problems. Don purchased his first Limousin bull from Henry Bollum in Blue Earth,

Minnesota. From there he built a Limousin herd along with his crossbred herd. Don and his son, Bill, used bulls and heifers from many great breeders across the country including Wulf Cattle of Morris, Minnesota; Express Ranches of Yukon, Oklahoma; and Symens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota. Green Acres Farm has sold purebred bulls and heifers over the years, but most of their cattle is raised for replacement or they go to the feedlot where they use them for locker beef. Others are marketed at the sale barn. Bill, Don and Kathy’s son, does most of the work with the cattle now. He currently has over 250 head of purebred Limousin and crossed Black and Red Angus. Don is a lifetime member of the Heartland Limousin Association and has served as vice president on the board of directors. In addition, he was president of the Minnesota Limousin Association and he is a member of the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Livestock committee.

Missouri News… Field Day

he Missouri Limousin Breeders Association and the Missouri Junior Limousin Association will hold their annual field day the weekend of June 10-12, 2016. The show will be held at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield. It will be a busy weekend with four shows in three days. The MLBA junior field day show will take place Friday evening, June 10. Contact Brooke Edwards or Susie Heavin for an entry form or for further information about the show.

The Heartland Regional Show, hosted by the MLBA, will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. We hope to have a large contingent of Missouri juniors take part in the regional show. Ed Pinegar outlasted the bidding at the Heartland benefit auction for the right to put his Pinegar Limousin logo on the sleeve of the HLA show shirts. While attending graduate school at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Jerry started farming parttime with his mother, and in 1970 he returned home to Velva to take over the farming operation. He started his beef herd through crossbreeding and artificial insemination, thus developing his purebred Limousin herd. Today, his operation is known as Effertz Black Butte Acres. They are also home to Effertz Black Butte Adventures, an agriculture and nature tourism destination. Jerry is a founding member of the North Dakota Limousin Association, has been a member of the North Dakota

State Fair

Mark your calendar for Friday and Saturday, August 19 and 20, 2016. Those are the dates for the Missouri Limousin 4-H, FFA and open shows at the state fair in Sedalia. Stockmen’s Association for over 50 years, is a member of the North Dakota Beef Commission and he is on the State Board of Agriculture Research and Education. In addition, he was involved with the initiation of the North Dakota Junior Beef Expo and the state Junior Point Show Program. In 2011, Jerry, along with a delegate from the U.S. Meat Export Federation, represented the U.S. beef industry on a trade mission to the Pacific Rim. His many honors include NDSU’s Outstanding Agriculturist Award, AgriInternational Stockman of the Year, and the GNDA Agriculture Award. Jerry and his wife, Norma, are active members of the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA). Norma serves as a member of the HLA board of directors and was elected treasurer in 2016. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year and have two daughters, Maria (Mike) Hanson of Velva and Kayla (Craig) Kleven of Bismarck and four grandchildren.

In Memoriam Karla May Bohn, 55, of Sentinel Butte, North Dakota, passed away March 14, 2016, due to a tragic accident. She is the wife of Tim Bohn, a commercial cattlemen and longtime user of Limousin genetics. She was raised in Richardton, North Dakota, attended college at North Dakota State University, and graduated from Dickinson State University with a degree in business administration. Karla worked at the Beach, North Dakota, elementary school and in the office at Home on the Range, in addition to ranching alongside

her husband. She loved her family, the animals on the ranch, and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Tim Bohn of Sentinel Butte; her sons Christopher Bohn of Fargo, North Dakota, and Dominic Bohn of Sentinel Butte, North Dakota; her in-laws, Ted and Thelma Bohn, two brothers and two sisters, and many other family members and friends.

Nebraska News… Annual Meeting and Benefit Auction Held in Kearney

ember of the Nebraska Limousin Association and fellow breeders from surrounding states gathered in Kearney February 17, 2016, for their annual meeting and benefit auction.

This was held in conjunction with the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. The Limousin portion of the show and sale was Thursday, February 18. The annual meeting took place at the Country Inn & Suites, headquarters for the Nebraska Limousin Association. A variety of desserts were served followed by the meeting and benefit auction. Gerald Gustafson, president, welcomed the members and guests to the meeting. He acknowledged the fact that there were more people at this year’s meeting than have been there for several years and he thanked everyone for coming to Kearney. Gerald also serves as the Limousin representative to the Nebraska State Fair. Gwen Behrends, secretary/treasurer, gave a report on the new herd books that have been printed and are ready The Nebraska Limousin Association held for distribution. Dean Summerbell gave a report on the Heartland activities. He discussed the upcoming NALJA show which will be held at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island the first week in July 2017. He showed a photo that will be used as one method of raising funds for miscellaneous expenses. Chad Settje, ex-officio member of the NALF board of directors, gave a recap of his past six years serving on the national board as well as being president this past year. He also discussed the various programs offered by NALF, changes to the website, the new EPDs we are using, and changes that were made this past year at Limousin World.

The Limousin open show will be Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at the state fairgrounds in Grand Island. Leon Vogel Named Nebraska Commercial Producer of the Year

eon and Janie Vogel of Gothenburg were named the 2016 Commercial Producer of the Year by the Nebraska Limousin Association. The Vogels received their award at the Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney February 18. Vogel grew up near Gothenburg and started his operation in 1972. He purchased his first Limousin bull from Sandhills Limousin in the 70s and has used Limousin bulls on his Angusbased herd ever since. He has purchased Limousin bulls from Straight Limousin of Logan, Iowa; Schilling Limousin of Edson, Kansas; and Nebraska breeders Hunt Limousin Ranch, Amos Limousin and Delmer Miller. Leon has built his herd to 130 mother cows.

He markets his calves annually the last of October at the Broken Bow, Nebraska, sale barn where they are typically purchased by a local feedlot. Leon appreciates the ease of calving and growth using Limousin genetics. In 2012, he won the annual Pen of Five championship held in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Classic with a pen of Lim-Flex females. One of the Vogels favorite past times, is watching their granddaughters exhibit their Lim-Flex steers in the local and state FFA events. Congratulations to the Vogels for being selected for this prestigious honor. Ochsner Bull Reigns Supreme at Cattlemen’s Classic The Limousin breed reigned Supreme for the third year in a row at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic with their grand champion bull. The Classic was held February 13-21, 2016, at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. Consignors from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Colorado brought a quality set of bulls and females for the 25th Annual Cattlemen’s Classic.

Show A panel of judges evaluated the grand champions from every breed Saturday, February 20. The Limousin breed took home the Supreme title again this year with ALYN Big Shot, a 9/17/14 black, polled 50% Lim-Flex son of Connealy Consensus 7229 out of KEVN Whiskey Lullaby. This champion Limousin bull was consigned by Ochsner Limousin of Kersey, CO.

Mark Hoge of Macomb, Illinois, evaluated the 10 bulls and five females in the Limousin show. Following his selection of the Ochsner bull, ALYN Big Shot, as grand champion, he selected another Ochsner consignment as reserve grand champion. South Dakota News… Summer Spotlight Show

he 2016 South Dakota Summer Spotlight Limousin Show will take place Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron. All juniors who take part in the various shows and activities must wear the official t-shirt. Check the website for the South Dakota Junior Point Show (SDJPS) for more information about this event. The SDJPS was organized to recognize youth who participate in showing beef, sheep, swine and goats throughout the state of South Dakota. Exhibitors range in age from 8 to 21 and accumulate points at different sanctioned shows across South Dakota. Year-end awards are given out to the top exhibitors during the South Dakota State Fair.

State Fair

There are a lot of thrilling experiences to have at the farm, from riding rides to showing your cattle to taking in your favorite concert. The theme for the 2016 South Dakota State Fair is “Thrills, Squeals and Ferris Wheels.” People come to the fair each year for a variety of reasons, with livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, carnival rides and entertainment. This year’s theme reiterates the variety of events held at the fair and generates excitement around the experience that is signature to the fair. This year’s Limousin open show and junior special show will be Friday, September 2, 2016. More information on the show schedules will be given at a later date on the South Dakota State Fair website.

Wulf Cattle Holds Low Stress Cattle Handling Seminar Dr. Tom Noffsinger, DVM, of Binkelman, Nebraska, presented an informative discussion on Low Stress Cattle Handling Thursday evening, March 31, 2016, at the Wulf Cattle sale facility in Morris, Minnesota. This event took place in conjunction with the annual Wulf Opportunity Sale. Noffsinger is known across the country for his passion and enthusiasm for working with feedyards and ranches on low stress cattle handling. More and more feedyards and ranches are incorporating this philosophy and production practice into daily operations that benefit both cattle and animal handlers. Dr. Noffsinger believes that cattle caregivers contribute to cattle well-being. We have a responsibility to provide cattle with physical comfort disease protection, nutritional needs, and emotional

stability. Veterinarians understand that physical and psychological stress play important roles in cattle disease resistance and performance levels. Caretakers can be trained to realize that all human contact with cattle impacts the animal well-being. Human contact can either create a very positive impact or can create impact that can devastate cattle health, performance and safety for cattle and humans. During his talk, Dr. Noffsinger explained stockmanship, which is more than just a relationship with cattle and horses. He said it is the foundation of animal health, performance and profit potential. He also talked about preparing calves for weaning, caregiver responsibilities, and he gave reasons why veterinarians are interested in lowstress handling. Dr. Noffsinger backed up many of his points with short videos. The evening concluded with a question-and-answer session.

Members of the South Dakota Limousin Association held a number of productions sales along with two consignment sales in 2016. The sales were successful and well attended. Producers bringing cattle to consignment sales and/or holding production sales in South Dakota from January-April are: Bar JZ, Buck Riley, Bruner Limousin, DeRung Limousin, JLX Limousin, Ludens Family Farm, Nolz Limousin, Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin, Rafter RS Cattle, ROM’N Limousin, Schott Limousin Ranch, Symens Brothers and Wieczorek Limousin.

Nolz Wins Award Kaley Nolz of Mitchell, South Dakota, won the High Point Upperclassman award at SDSU’s 93rd Little International April 2 in Brookings, South Dakota . To win the award, she had to accumulate points throughout the entire event, her winnings included first place honors in sheep showmanship, ag sales, nursery landscape, floriculture and ag business management, and second place honors in dairy novice showmanship, dairy experienced showmanship, and sheep fitting. In Memoriam Dale Brooks, 76, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, passed away February 24, 2016. Services were held February 29 at the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Dale graduated from high school in Aberdeen and continued his education at North Dakota State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry. He spent most of his life on the ranch near Mina, South Dakota. Dale and his family raised Limousin cattle, and in 2006 he was named the Heartland and South Dakota Commercial Producer of the Year. Dale loved raising cattle and being a steward of the environment. He appreciated the opportunity to care for the land before passing it on to the next generation.

He was active in the c o m m u n i t y. He served on the Pembrook Township Board for 34 years and on the Edmunds County Extension Board for five years. He is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter Brandi, stepsons Garret and Scott Hulschof, stepsons Paul and David Larson, grandchildren, three sisters, a brother and many nieces and nephews.

A variety of items were donated to the benefit auction held immediately following the annual meeting. Some of the items on the auction included semen, cattle supplies, several baskets filled with interesting gifts, jewelry, a wine and cheese box, table mats, lottery tickets, and jackets/caps. John Franseen and Bart Mitchell teamed up to buy the mystery box. Thanks to everyone who donated and/or bought items on this year’s benefit auction. The money raised goes to support the association and its activities throughout the year.

Franseen Wins “Best of Show” Award John Franseen of Hewitt’s Meat Processing, Marshfield, Wisconsin, won the Best of Show award at the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors (WAMP) Convention in Middleton, Wisconsin, for their SemiBoneless Ham. They also received awards on seven other products entered in the competition including their Habanero Mango Brats, Smoked Cheese Brats, Braunschweiger, Smoked Beef, Boneless Ham and Summer Sausage. Their bologna received honorable mention in the contest. There were a total of 944 products entered, making the WAMP product

There were six consignors from Wisconsin who sold cattle March 6 at the Equity Livestock Market in Sparta. The high-selling bull was MRL Claymaker 516 C consigned by Mill Road Limousin of Knapp, Wisconsin. Kentucky Farm Show

Several members of the FLA took part in the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky, in February. More than 300,000 attend this show each year. Stephen and Emily Haynes of A C H Holdings, Bowling Green, Kentucky, set up a booth, had informational material on display, and visited with people from all over the United States and Canada. The Haynes family have represented the Limousin breed at this show for the past six years. They recently expanded their single booth to a two-booth space due to the large number of people who stop by to talk about Limousin genetics. The booth featured Limousin material, as well as banners promoting both the Fullblood and Limousin cattle. This year the Haynes family invited the Kentucky Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) to promote the 2016 National Limousin Junior Show

In Memoriam Terry Evans, 71, of Chelsea, Oklahoma, passed away suddenly February 15, 2016. Services were held February 19, 2016, at the Chelsea Epworth United Methodist Church. He grew up in Chelsea, attended school there, and graduated from Northeastern State University with a master’s degree in Education. He also held a Superintendent Degree from Oklahoma University. Terry was a teacher and coach in the Claremore Public Schools. From there he was a principal in Waurika Public Schools and went on to become the superintendent for the Achille Public Schools before retiring from the Warner Public Schools, where he was both a principle and superintendent for 10 years. He and his wife, Lynn, shared many of the same interests and one that brought them the most enjoyment

were their registered Limousin cattle. Terry was a member of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance and the North American Limousin Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, they won the Grand Champion Fullblood Limousin Female award. Terry is survived by his wife, Lynn; children Scott (Lindsay) Evans, Lance (Buffy) Evans, and Stacy EvansKing (Craig), several grandchildren, a brother, and many other family members and friends.

The buyers enjoyed looking at the cattle on a day where the temperatures reached 72 degrees. That is most unusual for a sale in February. A standing-room-only crowd packed the sale barn to evaluate and purchase a stout set of bulls and females. Kelly, Norma and Jeff Yorga welcomed the crowd and explained that although it was a challenging year for them on the feed front, they are proud of the way the bulls developed on lentil straw and spring thrashed oats. The motto for JYF is “Where Limousin Keep Getting Better” and that was true with this year’s offering. They were extremely thick-muscled bulls that will work both in commercial and purebred herds. Vaughn Farms of Cavalier, North Dakota, held the final bid of $16,500 after rigorous bidding. ymens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota, held their 36th annual production sale on February 25, 2016. In one of the breed’s longest consecutive production sales, another full house of repeat and new buyers filled the seats and aggressively bid on a stout set of Limousin bulls. The sale featured bulls from their Division winning April pen and their March pen from the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. This was the 41st year Symens Brothers have shown cattle at the NWSS Pen and Carload Show. They strive to produce bulls that are docile, easy-fleshing, easy-calving, fast-growing and express the thickness and muscle that identify them as Limousin. The top-selling bull was SYES Curtain Call 466C, a 4/16/15 homozygous black, polled son of Wulfs Xclusive 2458X out of Miss SYES Friendly 466Z. he weather broke a record high temperature on February 26, 2016, at the 36th Annual Wieczorek Limousin production sale in Mt. Vernon, South Dakota. The bidding was even hotter inside the new sale facility at the family farm. When Col. C.K. “Sonny” Booth brought the final gavel down before a full house of buyers from seven states, a stunning $6,691 sale average was recorded. Curt and Leanne emphasize the same selection criteria that began over 40 years ago when Curt’s dad, Wallace, put the first units of Dandy, Éclair and Prince Pompadour semen into their commercial cows. Cattle must be moderately framed, easy-fleshing, docile and must be able to handle the harsh South Dakota weather. The top-selling bull was WZRK Corvette 3009C, a 2/21/15 homozygous black, homozygous polled son of HUNT Atomic 17A out of WZRK Miss Tuffenuff 3009A. Heartland Sale Reports Schott Bull Sale Held in Mobridge

A stout set of rugged, performance-tested bulls were offered to a good crowd of commercial producers who attended the sale on a sunny day. The motto for Schott Limousin Ranch is “Old West Values with a Handshake and a Nod…Modern Day Genetics.” Schott offered a discount for volume buyers; $30 off for three bulls, $40 off for four bulls, and $50 off of five bulls. Another incentive was the drawing for a free bull at the end of the sale. Two bulls were brought into the ring and buyer number 320 was drawn out of a hat. A good crowd of buyers were in the seats to bid on the stout set of red and black bulls with exceptional performance genetics. The catalog featured tripledigit yearling EPDs on the bulls.

The genetics offered are the results of 45 years of AI breeding and selection for balanced traits. They put strict selection pressure on their cowherd for ease of fleshing and gentle dispositions while optimizing growth, maternal and carcass traits. The top-selling bull was BRAW Topper 5135C, a 4/11/15 red, homozygous polled Lim-Flex 75% son of LFLC ZZ Top 70Z out of BRAW Ms Danny 8187U. Alan Steinke of Idaho Falls, Idaho, had the final bid of $5,250.

Ken Colburn of Valentine, Nebraska, purchased the second high-selling lot for $5,000. BRAW Tractor is a 3/19/15 homozygous black, double polled LimFlex 60% son of BRAW Xtractor 380A out of BRAW Ms Frontier 816U. BRAW Topper 541C, a 3/11/15 red, homozygous polled son of LFLC ZZ Top 70Z out of BRAW Ms Blackbelt 354C was purchased by Alan Steinke for $4,750. Six inches of snow and slick roads did not prevent commercial and seedstock buyers from attending and evaluating a stout set of bulls and females. Guest consignors included Jordan Sagert, Sagert Livestock of St. Thomas, North Dakota, and Roger and Donna Potter of Potter Livestock, Braddock, North Dakota.

The top-selling bull was DLVL Canyon 546C, a 3/16/15 black, homozygous polled son of JYF Zeek 151Z out of DLVL Miss Work Horse 170Y. Symens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota, purchased the bull for $10,000. Liberty Ranch of Plainville, Kansas, purchased CRVL California 505C, a 2/16/15 red, homozygous polled son of Wulfs Xcellsior X252X out of CRVL Miss Xerox 307A for $9,750. Heartland Sale Reports Wulf Cattle Hosts Inaugural Video Sale

ommercial and seedstock producers filled the Wulf Cattle sale facility near Morris, Minnesota, Friday, April 1, 21016, for their annual “Opportunity Sale of 2016.” It marked a new beginning for the Wulf operation with the use of video rather than live cattle in the ring. Interested buyers were given the opportunity to preview all the sale bulls at their Sandy Ridge bull development ranch near Atkinson, Nebraska, in March for a twoday open house. A total of 80 of the 380 Purebred Limousin, Lim-Flex and Angus bulls were displayed at Morris for the sale, along with a select number of females. Col. C.K. “Sonny” Booth and Col. Ronn Cunningham worked the five-and-one-half hour sale, selling 380 bulls and 43 females to the large crowd in the stands as well as those buying over the internet. The top-selling bull was Wulfs Compliant K687C, a 3/11/15 black, homozygous polled purebred son of Wulfs Willard 5115W out of Wulfs Soloist 6284S. A syndicate of buyers purchased the bull and twothirds semen interest for $70,000. The sale featured bulls that were shown at the National Western Stock Show in Denver in January. These sale bulls have balanced EPDs and excellent phenotypes. The Ludens also offered a select number of heifers bred to LFLC Bank Account.
