Frances Allen’s Desert Roundup As might be imagined, the Desert is all abuzz with the impending arrival of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the late-breaking news that actor Bryan Cranston will receive the coveted “Spotlight Award” at the festival’s black-tie awards gala, hosted by the always gorgeous Mary Hart tomorrow night at the Palm Springs Convention Center. While Cranston is being recognized primarily for his work in Trumbo, Festival Chairman Harold Matzner cited a list of award-winning work roles that have garnered him four Emmys, a Golden Globe and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. For his work in Trumbo, Cranston has already received nominations for a Golden Globe nomination, two each for the SAG Award and the Choice Movie Awards. It would be no surprise to learn that an Oscar, with Cranston’s name engraved on it, will be waiting in the wings at this year’s Academy Awards presentation. Trumbo is the story of acclaimed screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and the crushing halt to his career in the late 1940s when he and other Hollywood figures were blacklisted for their political beliefs, real or imagined. The film recounts how he used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the blacklist mania from Hollywood columnist Hedda Hooper (played by Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. Palm Desert’s Bighorn Country Club is the presenting sponsor of the awards gala; Entertainment Tonight and MercedesBenz are major sponsors. ******

B I R T H D A Y PA R T Y – F o r m e r longtime Beverly Hills’ residents Sophia Braverman and Stewart Cohen hosted a birthday party for two dozen friends in the former’s Sun City home.

Two note-worthy Desert year-end parties deserve mention. The first–held by Jewish Family Services–was the Bar Mitzvah (13th anniversary) of its Patron Party, as a way to say “thank you” for their generosity and support. Hosted by Dr. Tim Jochen and his partner, Lee Erwin at their Tamarisk Country Club home, the party acknowledged that thanks to the Patrons, Jewish Family Services will be able to provide critically needed social services to more than 4,500 men, women and children this year...all free of charge and not restricted to any race, religion or ethnicity. Audrey Bernstein, Joan Kerns and Aviva Snow served as party co-chairs, which featured a sumptuous reception catered by Lulu’s. Also on the list of memorable parties was the sit-down catered dinner to celebrate Boxing Day and the birthday of Sophia Braverman, a true Desert flower who, along with Stewart Cohen, opened her Sun City home for about two dozen friends, most of whom reside (now or in the past) in Beverly Hills. Among those basking in the Desert ambiance of Sophia’s hospitality and friendship were Lolo and Al Berkoff, Howard and Phyllis Braverman, Donald and Bernice Leve plus everyone’s favorite former beauty pageant contestant: Ziva Rodan. ****** May 2016 bring you and yours an abundance of health and happiness.
