Design Thesis:Reorganizing Shivratri Mela at Bhavnath, Junagadh

The thesis project was selected on an issue-based exploration, along with being site-specific. The site was then studied and analysed based on the massing, building use, context, density, amongst other factors. Such an urban-scaled project was approached, by first studing Kumbh Mela- a periodic ephimeral gathering. Then, the major requirement based on present and future needs of the stakeholders were considered to arrive at a final programme. The specific area of intervention was then chosen, based on the urban study, and analysis along with the area table. Finally, the design consisted of a well-evolved module based on people’s needs and daily usage pattern for the temporary duration. Some of other interventions were permanent, and for the people to increase the valuse of the existing. This all was managed, keeping the sanctity of the place intact.

F A I R

As per our ancestors, human’s basic need comprises of FOOD, SLEEP and WORK. Considering the human nature they brought them together in the name of GOD. Need of public gatherings and social interaction were made Religion oriented which gets them in order to be followed. thus our ancestors introduced Mela, festivals, celebrations, upvas. Initiative for public gathering took place in the form of Mela to keep the human energetic and active.

TRIVENI SANGAM OF

Gujarat ranks highest in the country in terms of number of fairs conducted every year. There are close to 3500 fairs conducted annually here. These fairs are mostly organised by the tribal population. Therefore, these fairs, in addition to reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the place, also reflect the lifestyles and deep rooted traditions of the tribal population of the state. These fairs are the best places to visit if tourists want an idea about the culture, value and heritage of Gujarat. It is a priceless experience to witness these fairs. These fairs have a very deep history as some of them have existed right from the times mentioned in the Bible. Even in the earlier days, there are evidences of fairs that existed, that were organised by people of specific religions. These innumerable fairs and expositions make Gujarat a very vibrant state. Around 3500 fairs are organised in the state every year. These fairs are great samples of the rich cultural diversity and deep rooted traditional value system of the state. Most of these fairs have religious and mythological reasons behind these and they are organized with great festive fervour, splendour and pomp. The fairs in Gujarat have various social, religious and cultural implications. It is because of these fairs that all the others states and countries have started to notice the state.

Bhavnath Mahadev Temple is located in the Junagarh district of Gujarat. The Bhavnath Fair is the main festival on the occasion of Shivaratri. The ‘Mela’ or the fair is the best place where the Hindu customs and beliefs are perceptible. The fair is the meeting place of various cultures. Gujarat is the place where 5000 years old Hindu tradition can be witnessed in the fair. The sages, the devotees, all gather to make the occasion ostentatious. Participation of all people from different strata creates a wonderful atmosphere, where the mela takes its true meaning. Bhavnath Fair of Gujarat takes place on the day of Maha Shivratri. On the very day, Bhavnath Mahadev temple is decorated and thousands of devotees across the country come to visit the fair and the festival. Fair is held on the adjacent ground of the temple where the sages from different corner of the country come to experience the holy occasion. The ‘naga bavas’ or sages move towards the temple on elephant’s back to witness the maha puja. Shiva linga is worshipped and in the honor of the festival the fair is organized, which is now known nationwide. It is believed that Shiva himself had visited the shrine during the festival and this place is the abode of famous nine ‘naths’ of Hindu mythology. The sound of conch shell, drums and ululation create a pious ambience. The mela takes a holy shape with devotees, sages and spiritually elevated souls. The visitors are served free meals during the fair. In the fair different stalls give the visitors to buy the local handicrafts and other item.

Shiva made his own ‘Shivlinga’ which is made by itself, which is known as ‘Bhavnath Mahadev’. The night they met was ‘Maha Shivratri ‘, the marriage night of the Shiva and Parvati. So they celebrated by marching with the followers around the Shivlinga. After this celebration, Lord Shiva and Parvati took bath in holy ‘Mrugi kund’ and after this they went towards ‘Kailasha’. Till this date Sadhu, Naga sadhu and Aghori - the followers of Lord Shiva celebrate the Maha Shivratri by marching and taking bath in holy Mrugi kund and thus the celebration as mela started.

BHAJAN, BHOJAN, AND BHAKTI.

When Lord Shiva disappears from Kailasha, Parvati has roamed around whole ‘Bharat Varsh’ in search of him but did not find. So she has talked to Naradji and he said that, he would be in the taleti of ‘Revtachal’ mountain (Girnar). Atlast, Parvati met Lord Shiva at Revtachal and asked Shiva to make the place holy by his presence because they met each other at that place. Then, Shiva made his own ‘Shivlinga’ which is made by itself, which is known as ‘Bhavnath Mahadev’. The night they met was a ‘Maha Shivratri ‘, the marriage night of the Shiva and Parvati. So they celebrate by marching with the followers around the Shivlinga. After this celebration, Lord Shiva and Parvati took bath in holy ‘Mrugi kund’ and after this they goes towards ‘Kailasha’. Till this date Sadhu, Naga sadhu and Aghori - the followers of Lord Shiva celebrate the Maha Shivratri by marching and taking bath in holy Mrugi kund and thus the celebration as mela started.

BHAVNATH

An overall site model, as a part of the process helped to understand and analyze the massing in and around the site as a part of the context. Also, the varied building uses on site help in visualizing and determining interventions. The fair is not a still phenomenon and is distributed in various zones, based on it’s surrounding building typology. For example, the temple complex and it’s surroundings form the core area around which the fair gets hosted, due to it’s religious use and primary nature. The city of Bhavnath other than that vhas concentrated residential buildings at a distance. While the main city that hosts the fair consists mainly of religious institutes like the temple, ashrams and akhadas and dharamshalas other than commercial and mixed use. The model helps in comprehending such different layers of understanding.

Not touch the Dignity ad sanctity of the Naga sadhu. but provide the batter facility to seating and living.

The grid patern will follow the all ravti of naga sadhu. and they free to built their own way in grid pattern. The grid is to flexible in one, two and many sadhus to join their ravti.

Dedicated pedestrian route to reduce the hindrance in the vehicular movement and easily reached to temple complex. people will aware about the mela and place by passing the pedestrian route and also some recreational spaces like cafeteria is held near to the pedestrian for refresh. Pedestrian route is planned connecting the main axis of Bhavnath temple. Considering this axis as a pedestrian which connected direct parking to the temple. The gate which is entrence of the pedestrian is feel to pilgrims like a sense of entrance at holy place. The pedestrian underpass will be provided for easy pedestrian movement without disturbing the regular traffic flow.

In the temple precinct, the importance is given to the main temple and the other temple related building are functionally organised and are subdued in the ground

The model explaing the overall mass existing as a context to the Shivratri mela in Bhavnath. A pedestrian-friendly path that directly leads to the core area of the temple complex is designed for public convenience, that will also showcase the cultural, religious and spiritual aspects of the Bhavnath city, Girnar mountain and the mela itself along the path for the visitors, tourists, and pilgrims for adding to their awareness. Also, seating spaces are provided along the path. This would address the problem of public stampedes that sometimes are generated despite of maintaining security, and public flow organization.

Urban Insert Studio:Slum Upliftment Center at Padra, Vadodara

Urban studio was based on Padra town near Vadodara which was thoroughly studied, analysed and documented at urban scale; which led us to understand the sustainability parameters of a town - Social, Economical and Environmetal. After full comprehension of the town mass, density, community distribution, housing typologies, etc. through physical model of the town a class level; an individual approach for the future needs for the town was addressed after discussions for various issues. Finally, slum upliftment project was felt as a need-of-time for the town, for which further study was justified along with the site selection. The needs helped to derive a final program for the slum community, the service providers for Padra residents. Finally, a sustainable and a cheap economic solution-oriented design was derived for the same.

Housing Studio:Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Housing for All

The “Housing for All” studio was based on a real-time competition theme, under PMAY, which required us to design affordable community housing for different income groups in the same site. THe site was selected based on feasibility and appropriateness, along with it’s context after thorough study. The studio mainly addressed today’s short supply of living residential spaces to its increasing demand. The design process was evolved keeping in mind the interaction spaces and their nature amonst other factors. The idea was to keep the humane factor intact and still create a housing for mixed communities with varied living standards.

Working Drawing:Sheduled Bank and Manager Accomodation near Alkapuri, Vadodara

The studio was basically a small mixed-use oriented project aimed at achiving the maximum for the required program in a very tight space. The studio was a strict - time conceplling project as along with the design, working drawings of the same were also to be addressed. The idea was to create an optimum design solution to house the bank as well as the manager’s accomodation in the same building. The working drawing for the same helped to evaluate us our projects on the basis of FSI, built-up and other aspects of the it, which would be essential in a realtime project.

For us, R.S.P is mainly a rigid measure drawing tour which involves vigilant observations, late night dummy drawings preparation and on-spot exhibitions and discussion that help us understand, study and analyse the old vernacular architectural styles and the design approch along with focusing on construction details. Finally, the drawings are then prepared on-site with the help of tringulation and other methods, and then transfered to digital means and presewntation for further analysis. Physical models, panels and books are then made for better understanding of our subject, which are open for a final exhibit and intense discussions which add to the understanding. Two such intense studies at Bikaner and Amritsar old city were carried out along with academics.

“Architecture cannot flourish alone based on desiging, it needs many other skills and academic studios, many other activities led to an overall comprehension, skills and knowledge - on and off the field. Most of them were based on hands-on learings and explorations. Human scale structures - like bamboo pavalion, geodesic domes, parametric structures, enhanced my understanding as a student. Other than that, coordination and participation in mud workshop made me realize why construct with sustainable building component. Besides, exclusive workshops like model making, Housing workshop with Ar. Yatin Pandya and Order-in-Built Environment workshop which involved understanding, study and analysis of old city Vadodara ; have enhanced my skills.
