Queensland firm backs airport growth

EXCLUSIVE

By CHRISTINE McGINN

ONE of Queensland’s wealthiest families has expressed its interest in the Bendigo airport. Wagners chairman and one of the company’s four founding brothers, John Wagner, visited the airport on Tuesday to explore the

site and the region. “It was a reconnaissance mission for us. If the upgrade is going to happen, we are keen to be involved. We have the relevant expertise,” Mr Wagner said. “We are impressed with the region and there is a good

government which is proactive. “We are really happy to help, guide and make the airport upgrade a success.” The Wagner family was ranked at 16 in the BRW rich family list in 2014 with an $827 million empire. The Wagners opened their $200

million Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba last November. Having built its wealth in the manufacturing sector, predominately trading in building materials, the family-owned company has been running since 1989. Mr Wagner said Bendigo de-

served a terrific airport and believed it would significantly improve the city’s connections to the world. “You won’t know the city in five years,” he said. “The site is not landlocked and you can have a proper runway (unlike Toowoomba). The sooner the upgrade happens the better. It will transform Bendigo.”

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Home starts on rebound LATEST figures confirm the number of new home starts rebounded in the March quarter of 2015. Housing Industry Association economist Geordan Murray said the strong result for the March 2015 quarter was the second highest level for any quarter on record. “This latest result was consistent with our expectations, and the mix of dwelling types commencing construction was aligned with the recent trend,” he said. “The number of detached houses commencing construction held steady at a relatively high level, while a rebound in multiunit dwelling commencements provided the lift.” During the March 2015 quarter, new home starts increased in New South Wales (up by 1.9 per cent), Victoria (up by 18.8 per cent), Queensland (up by 20.9 per cent) and the Northern Territory (up by 12.0 per cent). THE Urban Development Institute of Australia said the introduction of more efficient taxes, such as a broadened GST or land tax, would help provide states and territories with the necessary revenue to phase out inefficient and damaging taxes such as stamp duties.

The UDIA represents Australia’s development industry, and has called on both state and federal governments to use the upcoming Leader’s Summit as an opportunity to work together on the tax and federation reform that Australia needs. UDIA national vice president Michael Corcoran said inefficient and economically damaging taxes such as stamp duty were holding back Australia’s productivity, economic growth, and jobs in the development and construction industries. “Stamp duties are well known to be among the least efficient and most economically damaging taxes available to governments,” he said. “They lock people into housing that may not suit their needs, and can limit access to employment by discouraging people to move for work.” The UDIA has cautioned against raising the rate of the GST, which could raise the cost of new housing substantially at a time when housing affordability is a major concern. “At the current GST rate of 10 per cent, a new home sold at Australia’s median dwelling price of $571,500 already includes a GST component of $51,955, which ex-

PRAYERS ANSWERED: This former church is for sale. isting homes are not subject to,” Mr Corcoran said. “Increasing the GST by just a few per cent could result in tens of thousands of dollars in additional tax on new homes, which would push up prices further and reduce the supply of new dwellings. “Given the current state of housing affordability in Australia’s capital city markets, a higher GST is a tax increase that new home buyers simply cannot afford to wear.” DUNGEY Carter Ketterer has a three-bedroom home set on a generous 836 square metre block at 16 Bosquet Street White Hills to auction from 11am on Saturday. The home offers potential for improvement, includes a large 6m x 9m shed and an oversized pergola. It is in a quiet part of town and is just a short walk to local shops and primary schools. ELDERS has a 95 hectare rural property at Derrinal/Lake Eppal-

ock to auction from 2pm today, Friday, July 17 onsite. The property offers cropping, grazing and recreational potential in a beautiful setting just minutes from the lake. Set on two titles, on the corner of Sheedys Lane and Killeens Lane at Derrinal, the gently undulating land offers a lovely balance of natural bushland and open grazing land. ELDERS also has a beautiful Gothic style former church set on approximately one acre at Woodstock West to auction on Saturday from 10am on site. Located on Cnr Bible Christian Road West, Woodstock West, this well-presented building features original wooden doors, Baltic pine ceiling and windows, a new roof, new redgum floor and has recently been painted. The property offers enormous potential and is set in a quiet, serene location just 30 minutes to both Bendigo and Castlemaine.

Parmalat plans move Bendigo to benefit from $67m upgrade

EXCLUSIVE By CHRISTINE McGINN

AUSTRALIAN dairy manufacturing giant Parmalat has plans to invest $67 million to upgrade its facilities in North Bendigo. Plans have been lodged at the City of Greater Bendigo for a three-stage development to upgrade and extend its dairy product manufacturing capacity. Parmalat Australia will relocate its processing capacity from its southern Queensland facility to its Bannister Street premises.

According to the planning application, civil and building works are expected to cost $18m, equipment and services $28m and installation another $18m. “The proposal relocates all Parmalat’s yoghurt manufacturing facilities to Bendigo, which will result in a transport efficiency gain for the company and for Victoria’s transport infrastructure,” the application said. “Currently much of the milk processed at their south-east Queensland site is transported

from Victorian farms. Relocating all facilities to Bendigo means that the milk processing facilities are closer to their milk suppliers.

The factory would continue to be developed under stage two and in stage three with the delivery bay and cold room. The works will require the dam to be filled in and a new fire pump station to be installed close to the Nolan Street entrance. About 155 staff are currently employed at the North Bendigo facility which operates 24 hours a day, up to seven days a week. The proposed development would also provide additional jobs during construction and ongoing operation. Council is yet to consider the proposed planning development.

Festival hunts for the good life

SEEING RED: Louise Weaver with her art. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Collection offers support to art ONCE upon a time there were the Medicis, the Visconti, the Sforza, patrons of the arts who underwrote the Italian Renaissance. In contemporary Australia their equivalent is represented by individuals such as Arthur Guy, Harold Mitchell and on a regional level, Rod Fyffe. The unique aspect of the Michael Buxton Collection is that the charter of the patronage is to support a range of contemporary artists on a long term basis, allowing them precious time to expand and develop their work. One of the 16 eminent

artists represented in the Bendigo Art Gallery’s latest exhibition is Louise Weaver who said she is highly appreciative of Michael Buxton’s support. “Michael’s collection is structured so that he supports you in the long run,” she said. “By acquiring my work his foundation has allowed me to continue as a professional artist and for that I am truly grateful. “Michael genuinely loves art and he enjoys the company of artists as well. Many of them are his friends.” Weaving’s most striking work, the centrepiece of

the exhibition, is Taking a Chance on Love (2003). Accompanied by a recording of Harpo Marx’s harp rendition of Taking a Chance on Love, the sculpture consists of three crochet-clad animals on a carpet island. The piece is in a vivid cherry red and is both joyous and challenging. “Red is a colour that is passionate, optimistic and hopeful,” Weaver said. “The cast of each animal was made from a once living animal. “Each individual animal speaks for other animals. “I am pointing to the potential for evolution and

growth and metaphorically speaking I am asking that we reflect on ourselves.” Established in 1995, the collection now spans three generations of artists, representative of practices from the 1980s onwards. It encompasses a broad range of visual media; from painting, sculpture, photography and drawing, to ambitious installations, and highlights the many ways artists experiment with different forms and subjects. This is a unique opportunity to view the collection before it is permanently housed in Melbourne. - Dianne Dempsey

FORMER Greens Senator Bob Brown, internationally renowned commentator Tariq Ali, gourmet farmer Matthew Evans and more than 130 authors, essayists, philosophers, publishers, food writers and poets will come together for the 2015 Bendigo Writers Festival. They aim to explore what it means, and what it takes, to live the good life. This year the festival offers more than 70 events in a packed weekend of conversations, discussions and debates, from delicious ideas for eating well to getting the most out of reading and writing and a range of important topics including grief, climate change, ethics, politics, and caring for nature, for yourself and for others. Writers involved in the program include Robert Dessaix, Brenda Niall, Nam Le, John Marsden, Kris Olsson, Sian Prior and Alice Pung. Highlights include a grand gala opening in Bendigo’s new Ulumbarra Theatre on the site of the old Sandhurst Gaol. Bob Brown will share his ideas on why optimism is better than pessimism (August 7, Capital Theatre, 5.30pm). Tariq Ali and Robert Manne will discuss what needs to change in our world, and how that can happen (August 8, Ulumbarra Theatre, 7.30pm). Comedian, writer and satirist John Clarke will chat

about the natural world and the creativity it inspires with artist John Wolseley, whose exhibition Heartlands and Headwaters is currently on at the National Gallery of Victoria (August 9, Capital Theatre, 4.15pm). Eating well and ethically is another focus of The Good Life theme. Gourmet Farmers Matthew Evans, Nick Haddow and Ross O’Meara, Graeme Leith (from Passing Clouds vineyard), Roslyn Grundy (editor of the Age Good Food Guide) and Bendigo’s own Masterchef Emma Dean are among the foodie writers on the program. “Good food, good company and good thoughts: this year we’re gently taking back and idea of the good life being full of expensive goods and lavish spending, and asking what is essential for the happiness we all hope for,” artistic director Rosemary Sorensen said. “We are offering quality discussions, in a warm, friendly environment, and are very proud to have so many excellent writers come to Bendigo.”

Finishing school for villa

By CHRISTINE McGINN

THERE is a new education facility expected to open its doors at the historic Fortuna Villa – a finishing school. Specialising in etiquette, manners and social politeness, owner Paul Banks said the school was still in the development phase. The school would offer classes to youth and men to help them refine their skills and manners. “The finishing school is in the planning stage. We want to do it in the right way and make sure it is a credible institution and we need to make sure we have the rooms set up,” he said. The Fortuna Villa brand could be shared across multiple businesses ventures to open the 19th century home to the public. Locals would be able to enjoy the tearooms, take a tour, host a function or stay at the planned hotel and apartments. The estate, antiques and the business centre could all be on the cards with final

plans still being developed. A 23-lot retirement village for people age 55 or older is being developed with the notion to foster a community around the estate. Mr Banks said the prospect of a cooking school was also being considered with ample opportunities to celebrate at Fortuna.

The finishing school is in the planning stage. We want to do it in the right way He said the school and other business ventures were still a while away from reality but he had grand plans for George Lansell’s former home. High tea and guided tours start later this month with plenty of decadence and history on show. With multiple requests to host functions and conferences, seems the doors to Fortuna Villa are officially open. HIGHLIGHT: The finishing school is one of many plans for Fortuna Villa. council decision to refuse to grant a permit to the residential subdivision. Councillors previously refused the development due to its lack of connectivity to the community and pushed for a pedestrian bridge. The developer offered to pay $50,000 towards the $60,000 pedestrian bridge and council agreed to chip in the remaining $10,000. Cr Rod Campbell said it was important for communities to be connected and the goals would be achieved through this decision. Councillor Barry Lyons said it was a pragmatic development and would save both council and the developer money instead of resolving the matter at VCAT. “It is a sensible decision to avoid going to VCAT. It is a winwin situation and it should shorten the time before construction starts,” he said. “I believe everybody should be happy with the result.”

Dump permit refused

By CHRISTINE McGINN

THE City of Greater Bendigo councillors have refused to grant Hopley Recycling a temporary permit to use the former White Hills tip site. Councillors voted against a permit for the Powell Street site, instead referring to the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal at this week’s meeting. Councillor James Williams said rehabilitation work would need to occur before any permit could be approved. “I acknowledge the good work Mr Hopley does in recycling but I also note that we need to see a show of faith in regards to the use of the site and removing himself from the site,” he said. Cr Williams said he

would like to see Mr Hopley buy an appropriate premise rather than operate on a potentially unsafe site. The City of Greater Bendigo alleges Hopley Recycling has been occupying the site illegally.

cling is not the only business,” she said. “I am disappointed in (Mr) Hopley for not following through in what he has asked for, and requested, and told us, and does not deliver.”

This is a total disgrace and I encourage VCAT to take this council to task VCAT gave Hopley Recycling until May 10 to remove all of its materials from the site, but no action has been taken. Cr Lisa Ruffell said owner Ken Hopley had consistently failed to keep his word. “I have no doubt if and when the time comes it would be a perfect place for recycling but Hopley Recy-

She said council had, and would continue to actively help Mr Hopley to find an alternative location for his business. The company was permitted to expand the former tip in 2008 and was allowed to install a water pipe through 500 metres of the land in 2013. Council has a lease from

the Crown to rehabilitate the site, conduct testing and prepare aftercare plans. Cr Elise Chapman said council had failed to undertake rehabilitation works and the necessary soil testing on the site since 2001. “If we had done the testing and rehabilitated the site to date, which we should have done, we wouldn’t be here,” she said. “We wouldn’t be needing to ruin someone’s business or their lives or put extra stuff into our tip. “This is a total disgrace and I encourage VCAT to take this council to task.” Mr Hopley has already lodged an appeal at VCAT as council failed to make a decision within the 60-day timeframe. The VCAT hearing is listed for October this year.

Bendigo hits a low BENDIGO shivered through its coldest day in 16 years on Tuesday, as the city endured a freezing start to the working week. Tuesday’s maximum temperature of 7.1 degrees was the lowest since June 12, 1999, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The cold snap that delivered the city’s coldest July day since July 3, 1998, was due to a substantial cold air mass and associated cloud and rain over Victoria. While it was cold throughout the state, few places had the perfect set of circumstances for such chilly conditions, according to the bureau’s Chris Godfred. He said the unusually cold conditions were a case of getting the right weather system at the right time. “It was a very cold air mass across the state, which was exacerbated by the cloud and rain meaning there was very little so-

lar heating of the ground,” Mr Godfred, a duty forecaster at the bureau, said. “The sun is very weak this time of year, and when you have such cold starts like Bendigo has, the temperature can’t rise unless there is direct sunlight.” The city shivered through an unusual run of four single-digit maximum temperatures in the space of four days – a maximum of just 9.9 degrees on Sunday, followed by Tuesday’s bitter cold and a top of only 8.5 degrees on Wednesday after an overnight low of -2.2 degrees. Bendigo Airport also recorded 27 millimetres of rain over the four days. Mr Godfred said while the cold temperatures were unusual, the weather pattern that brought them was seen at least two or three times per year. Mr Godfred said Bendigo can expect more normality in terms of weather this weekend. GLANVILLE Page 18

Bendigo airport set to takeoff From Page 1 Under the National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF), the Bendigo airport received $5 million in federal government funding towards the $15m upgrade and runway extension. Bendigo Airport advisory committee chair councillor James Williams invited Mr Wagner to Bendigo to visit the site. “It became evident early in the piece John’s passion for regional travel. I asked if he would be interested in the runway and he indicated he would be interested in more than that, including the airport and its management,” he said. “They have built the largest fully privately funded airport outside a major capital city in Australia. “They understand the processes, costs and what is required to get the approvals. John brings a wealth of experience, business connections and an understanding of what is required.” Cr Williams said Toowoomba’s Wellcamp Airport and Bendigo airport were similar in size and proximity to a capital city. “What we will be building is an airport capable of serving this large regional town moving

forward,” he said. Mr Wagner met city of Greater Bendigo councillors James Williams, Mark Weragoda and Peter Cox, chief executive officer Craig Niemann and city futures director Stan Liacos on the tour. Mr Liacos said it was a terrific opportunity to meet a “significant investor in the aviation industry”. “He gave good advice on how to build and operate an airport and how to seek the interest of commuter airlines,” he said. “His expertise and advice is invaluable. We’ve agreed to stay in close contact.” Mr Liacos said it was too early to say whether the Wagners would commit any financial investment to the airport. However, Mr Liacos said he was confident commercial and charter airline interest would flood in over the next few years. “Mr Wagner expressed interest in future involvement in the airport,” he said. “We are currently refining our design and we expect to be in the position to seek interest from contractors later this year. “This is the culmination of 10 years of planning and advocacy. Fasten your seatbelt, we are preparing for take-off.”

WINNER: Christine McGinn plays a final game with the Weekly’s Erin Malloy and Nick Atyeo. By CHRISTINE McGINN

THIS week, a bright yellow box was placed on my seat at work. A farewell present from a thoughtful colleague. A 1985 limited edition, Bendigo – This Is Your City, a colourful board game celebrating the city, its attractions and businesses. The word is, had been neatly labelled with was, a gesture marking the end of my time as a journalist at the Bendigo Weekly. For the past two years, I have called Bendigo home. Having come for placement in February 2013, I was offered a position in August that year. Before I even realised, I had moved from Mel-

bourne, moved out of home and had a full-time job. The team were quick to accept me and welcomed me into their lives without a second thought. While they had to put up with my constant stream of questions about the place, they never protested. Instead, they shared their local insights and gave me contacts from decades before. While the city’s iconic attractions may not have changed in 30 years, Bendigo is in a critical period of change and innovation. The city is growing and embracing multiculturalism but this has not been left to chance. I have been proud to call Bendigo home and to speak

highly of the growing, vibrant city (not town) it has become. I have sung its praises, shared its successes and felt upset when it steered in the wrong direction. Frankly, I am still amazed at how warmly it welcomed me. The community is the heart of Bendigo. There are good people doing great things. I am proud of them and proud to have been part of the city’s history. I cannot forget breaking the story about Bendigo’s first mosque. At the time, I did not understand the full implications of revealing the planning matter and the city’s need to embrace all people. I leave the story about the opening of the mosque un-

To all at the Bendigo Weekly in my time, it has been a privilege and an honour. There are no amount of words to give my full thanks and too many names to mention. But you know who you are and each day you have had to put up with my singing and high-pitched cackle. Thanks for teaching me the ropes, inspiring me every day, waiting for my copy, for the endless laughs and choir practises. It’s time to try my hand at a new challenge. Booster for care

By CHRISTINE McGINN

BENDIGO has been given a funding boost of more than $370,000 for its Home and Community Care services this financial year. The Bendigo Healthcare Group has received $183,765 in federal government funding for HACC nursing, allied health and minor capital works. The City of Greater Bendigo received $50,000 in funding towards its HACC service delivery. Council decided to keep the service until the national aged care system takes effect in 2016 after a provisional decision

Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN IT was a big night in the Bortolotto family when Chris and Viv and their children sat around the TV to watch Grand Designs Australia. Featured in the program was the craftsmanship of the family business, KW Kitchens and Interiors. The house which was the focus of the program was the new multi-textured house built in Harcourt by Art Van Dyk and Troy West. “I’ve always watched the series and we were so excited to see our work highlighted on a national program,” Mr Bortolotto said.

The couple, who have been building up their business since 2005, spent many hours working with Art and Troy in order to create the work that would reflect the owners’ concepts and ideas for their new house. Mr Bortolotto said there were plenty of challenges in the project as Art and Troy had been shopping around looking for surfaces which would be compatible with their home which has a variety of surfaces, including stone. “We wanted to come up with something intricate and unique,” Mrs Bortolotto said.

Mrs Bortolotto, who studied interior design when she and her husband started their business, said they found a beautiful wood from Spain with a texture similar to that of a rippled sand. “We all of us enjoyed working together and coming up with so many different solutions for different parts of the house,” she said. While she consults with customers on matters of colour and design and manages the paperwork, Mr Bortolotto uses his finelyhoned skills to implement the challenges that their

customers present to them. “Their work is not restricted to cabinetry but also includes furniture, bathrooms, bars, kitchens, stairs and renovations in general,” he said. “You will be hard put to find the fridge in the Harcourt house as we covered that in wood as well so that it would blend in with the cupboards. “What people are saying more and more is that you don’t have to go to Melbourne anymore to find the products and services you want because it’s all here in Bendigo.” – Dianne Dempsey

Switch to save BENDIGO Bank has launched a new energy saving program aimed at regional Victorians to help reduce our impact on the environment. The Generation Green initiative, known as Switch to Save, replaces energythirsty halogen down lights with earth-friendly LED down lights in homes and businesses across regional Victoria. The free LED down lights will be installed by a local and fully-qualified electrician. Bendigo Bank’s state manager for regional Victoria, Tim Rodda, said the simple switch could save households as much as

$500 a year. “There are also massive environmental benefits too,” Mr Rodda said. “For every 1000 homes and businesses registered, which will see almost 30,000 down lights installed, we will be reducing greenhouse emissions by 17,000 tonnes. “That’s the equivalent of taking 3580 cars off the road for one year,” he said. In addition to saving money and the environment, Bendigo Bank is adding another initiative to the Switch to Save program. “Our branches will distribute $1 for every halogen down light replaced in

participating households and businesses to help support a neighbouring school undertake sustainable projects,” Mr Rodda said. “We hope this will not only provide an additional incentive to encourage community participation, but more importantly help to educate young people about the benefits of thinking green.” Switch to save is available to all households, regardless of whether they bank with Bendigo Bank or not. To register or for more information contact your local Bendigo Bank branch or go to bendigobank.com. au/campaigns/switch-to-save

CONSUMERS should limit their consumption of fish caught from the Loddon River between Bridgewater and Laanecoorie. Environment Protection Authority tests on redfin and carp have shown elevated levels of mercury. In line with the recommendations of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Consumer Advisory Statement that relates to fish with elevated mercury levels, people should eat no more than one serve per week of redfin and carp from this area and no other fish that week. Children up to six years, pregnant women and women of childbearing age should eat no more than one serve per fortnight and no other fish that fortnight. The levels of mercury found in the fish caught in the Loddon River are similar to those found in Lake Eildon, where similar consumption advice has been in place for some time. Further testing of other fish species in this part of the Loddon River is being considered by the Department of Health and Human Services. Drinking water is not affected.

FUN RUN KICKS OFF ON Sunday, May 31 the RUN100 Foundation hosted the inaugural Road to a Cure Fun Run at Bendigo Jockey Club. Participants of all ages and abilities took part in the 12 kilometre run, a six kilometre run/walk and 2.4km kids run. Even though the weather wasn’t great, the event was supported by more than 200 runners and walkers to raise $3132.78 for Ovarian Cancer Australia. The organisation’s Jeff Brennan said the RUN100 Foundation exists quite simply to raise funds. “It will go toward research, support, advocacy and education for ovarian cancer and the people that are being affected by the terrible disease,” he said. “With a wonderfully talented foundation committee, the organisation is going from strength to strength. “By way of great corporate support, business sponsorship and public participation, 2015 was always set to be a fantastic year.”

REPORT RECEIVED CITY of Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox has confirmed the councillor conduct panel report and recommendations relating to a tweet sent by councillor Elise Chapman earlier this year has been received and will be reported to the August 5 council meeting. Cr Chapman was referred to the independent panel after she sent an offensive tweet that included a graphic image involving the genital mutilation of young girls to a supporter of the proposed East Bendigo mosque. On Friday, March 6 this year, the Bendigo Weekly published an apology from Cr Chapman, prepared with assistance from mayor Peter Cox, relating to the controversial tweet.

TRAFFIC PLAN STALLED A RESPONSE to the Big Hill Primary School traffic management petition has been deferred for two City of Greater Bendigo council meetings. Councillors moved a motion to defer their response after family members raised concerns and asked questions about alternative options during public question time. The 115-signature petition called on council to ensure the safety of students, increase parking and create another access road to the school. A response is expected on August 26 following further discussions with the school community.

SHOP POPS UP Hats, bags, books and paintings are ready to be sold at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral. The pop-up op shop is raising funds for the operational costs of the building and runs today and tomorrow from 10am to 4pm. A watercolour painting by Castlemaine artist Geoff Sparks is for sale and another work, Quiet Backwater by Ian M Stephens is also for sale. Donations were received after a local donated their estate when they moved into a smaller home and parishioners gave the other items. Parishioners have been busy organising the pop-up op shop and hope to raise $1000. Locals are encouraged to come armed with cash with all items between $1 and $1000.

Fitted out for work

DISCUSSION POINT: Senator Bridget McKenzie hosted a forum to encourage further study. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Degree of success By CHRISTINE McGINN

BENDIGONIANS have shared their ideas on how to support local students to gain a university degree. National Party Senator Bridget McKenzie hosted the first of 15 national regional higher education forums at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre on Wednesday. Students, parents, teachers and community members discussed barriers regional students faced in accessing higher education. According to a federal government report, regional students experienced additional

barriers to higher education including costs, socioeconomic status, distance, schooling, preparedness and aspiration. “Young people from regional and remote communities make up 27 per cent of Australia’s population, yet they only represent 21 per cent of Australia’s university population – this is simply not good enough,” Senator McKenzie said. “Securing a university degree is important to our young people with graduates earning on average 75 per cent more over the life of their careers.” Senator McKenzie said the added cost burden was one of the biggest barriers to securing

a university degree. “These significant cost burdens are not faced by city students who can remain at home while they study,” she said. “While there are some support programmes available such as Youth Allowance and relocation grants, many families who earn above the threshold don’t qualify. “For a local family with two or more students wanting to access higher education these extra costs are often crippling.” The ideas will inform a final report to be prepared for Education Minister Christopher Pyne and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison later this year.

Entering the workforce after being locked out can be a daunting task. Fitted For Work is a national charity that helps prepare women overcome feelings of inadequacy by ensuring that they have smart, modern clothes in which to go to work in. Two local businesses involved in the national charity are Executive Virtual Associates, represented by Sam Spence and Fletcher and Butler Financial Planning, represented by Melissa Butler. The organisations encourage all local women to dig deep to help other women in need by donating interviewappropriate clothing. On Wednesday, July 22, Bendigo women are invited to bring their items to the Fletcher and Butler Financial Planning office at 44 Wills Street, between 5pm and 7pm. “We will accept shirts, skirts, suits, dresses, shoes and accessories. The items need to be clean and appropriate for the work environment,” Ms Spence said.

HELPING OUT: Sam Spence and Melissa Butler. “The golden rule is, if you wouldn’t wear it to work today, then Fitted For Work clients wouldn’t wear it either.” Fitted for Work’s clients come from all walks of life; older women needing to return to the workforce after the death of a partner or divorce, women dealing with domestic violence, addictions, mental and physical health problems and women exiting prison. Other women who visit Fitted for Work are refugees or migrants and a significant number are young early school leav-

ers and single mothers. For the past 10 years the group has provided services free of charge to more than 20,000 women facing disadvantage that helps them develop the skills, tools and confidence they need to find and keep employment. The group has continued to grow since its inception and is on track to exceed its target of assisting 4000 women in 2015, an increase of 14 per cent on last year. Jobs door opened Employment firm spreads its wings to other states CVGT Australia has opened its doors to a new employment service. As part of a five-year contract, the Bendiggroup has expanded its Victorian-based employment services into New South Wales as well as Tasmania. Chief executive Paul Green said the company was delighted to start the contract, which came into effect on July 1. “The new jobactive program will assist eligible job seekers to find and keep a job and en-

The new jobactive program will assist eligible job seekers to find and keep a job Green said “We find great employers and matches them to great job seekers – that’s employment matchmaking that delivers the best employment outcomes. “We have been deliv-

into New South Wales and Tasmania. “We will be providing jobactive employment services from 39 locations in three states consisting of 12 full-time, 10 part-time and 17 outreach sites.

“This is an exciting time of change for our company. The company is a not-for-profit, unlisted public company that provides a broad suite of employment programs. Based in Bendigo, and with offices in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, the company helps unemployed people and people with a disability get jobs. CVGT Australia is also a group training company for apprentices, trainees and employers.

Foster homes needed for pet project JEMIMA’S Gift is a new initiative by a group of people helping re-home animals in need. The group’s Kerrie Lockwood said there are many reasons why animals go into care. “People’s situations may have changed and they can’t keep their animals or they may have come from the

pound,” she said. “Every cat or dog is health checked, microchipped, desexed and vaccinated. “Being a pro-life group an animal would only be euthanased to end its suffering and Jemima’s Gift animals are given any treatment that they need to be healthy and happy ready for their new home.”

The group is comprised of people who foster animals in their own home. Sometimes this can be weeks or months but they stay in care until for as long as it takes to find the right home for them. “The foster carers at Jemima’s Gift do a magnificent job providing care and love the animals that they are

looking after,” Ms Lockwood said. “Sometimes people are unsure if they are ready to commit to owning an animal for the rest of its life. “Becoming a foster carer can help people work out what is right or wrong for them and if they are ready to commit themselves to a pet’s lifetime.”

ON THE MOVE: It’s worth the effort.

Why run? – Run4Dad MANY people run to relieve the pressure of life. It is important not to let running become just another stress. It is too easy to let running become a chore, something you worry about fitting in to a busy day, a pressure on your time. Here are 10 tips on how to make sure running is part of the solution and not part of the problem. 1. Set yourself a demanding but achievable goal. Make sure it isn’t too far in the future to be relevant to you. Visualise what it will be like to achieve it. Promise yourself a treat. What better treat than running the Run4Dad, which will be held on Sunday, September 6 at the Bendigo Racecourse. 2. Don’t try to stick religiously to a detailed daily programme. Use your programme to guide you on the amount of running you are aiming for, and the type of running you should be doing. Run according to how you feel: don’t let it become a duty. 3. Keep a running log. You can use your log to track your progress. 4. Take off a day every week, have an easy week every month, and take

a month off every year. You’ll find you return to running refreshed and enthusiastic. 5. Vary your routes. Don’t just run the same old routes every day. Go out and explore your neighbourhood, or take a drive or ride your bike out to the countryside. 6. If you feel you are getting stale, run for a week without wearing a watch. Run how you feel, not according to the time it is taking you. 7. Join a running club. You will meet other people, find new running partners, hear about interesting events and learn from people who have been running for years. For running clubs in Bendigo go to www.athleticsbendigo. org.au 8. Enter races. You don’t have to be a great athlete to run races – people of all ages and abilities enter them, and they are a fun day out. You can use them as a training run, or to test your progress. 9. Run in the mornings. Use your morning runs to clear your head and plan your day. 10. If you do not enjoy running, do something else instead.

Walking the wall

JOKER: Shaun Rosaia.

Comic turn all for a good cause THE Eaglehawk Hockey Club and the Bendigo Stadium are holding a comedy night to raise funds for the club. The headline act is Simon Taylor, a comedian based in Melbourne and Los Angeles. President of the Eaglehawk Hockey Club and aspiring comic Shaun Rosaia said it was great to bring such top quality Melbourne comedians to Bendigo. “We will also have four local acts who will bring a local flavour to the night,”

he said. “All funds raised from the night will go to the Eaglehawk Hockey club and assist in paying for training facility hire and new equipment for our junior teams.” Tickets are available at the door. The fundraiser will be held this Saturday from 8pm in the Skylounge at the Bendigo Stadium which is at 134 Marong Road. Tickets are $10 at the door. The stadium bistro is open from 6pm to 8.30pm.

LOCAL Julie Baird will be walking for a cause when she tackles the Great Wall of China in October. Taking up the challenge for the Leukaemia Foundation, Ms Baird is trying to raise $5000 to help find a cure. Locals can donate to the cause at a trivia night at the Bendigo Harness Racetrack in Junortoun on Saturday, July 18. Trivia, prizes, memorabilia, a silent auction and a raffle will entertain the guests with tickets costing $15 each. Tea, coffee and supper are provided for the tables of eight people. “The donations will help the Leukaemia Foundation fund free services to support Australian blood cancer patients,” she said. “Walking the Great Wall has always been a dream of mine, now what a better way to live out my dream and support a foundation that is close to my heart. “This disease has affected many people that I am close with, I’d like to try and make a difference for them. Please help me reach my goal and help to find a cure.” Ms Baird is one of three Victorians headed to China to make the seven-day trek on the Great Wall. She will join the team of 20 Australians to raise funds for the foundation. “I have a big fundraising and fitness challenge in front of me but I am very excited to participate,” she said. Anyone able to donate can visit www.my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au or book a trivia night table on 0428 250 786.

Let the donations flow TUESDAY marks 100 years since the death of William Charles Vahland, a prolific German architect who designed some of Bendigo’s most iconic buildings. These include the Town Hall, the Capital Theatre and Bendigo Health’s Anne Caudle Centre. To commemorate the anniversary, the City of Greater Bendigo, together with the Bendigo Bank, National Trust of Australia and the German Heritage Society, is calling for donations to restore a public

a central column and water flowed out of the mouths of four metal lions into large granite basins. There were also many decorative elements including scroll-shaped supports to connect the central column to the fountain below. Installed in 1881, the fountain sat at the junction of Bridge Street and Pall Mall

and together with the Alexandra Fountain was intended to visually balance Pall Mall, whilst also forming a triangle of fountains with the Cascades in Rosalind Park. All three water features were designed by Vahland. Mayor Cr Peter Cox said the council hopes to place the refurbished drinking fountain at the end of Bull Street, between the Law Courts and Conservatory Gardens. “The drinking fountain was dismantled to make way for the Discovery of Gold monument and has mostly been tucked away in storage ever since,” Cr Cox said. “Bendigo is famous for its

heritage streetscape, so there is no greater time than now, a century on, to honour the legacy of one of the city’s founding fathers and restore the fountain to complement our beautiful buildings. “It is estimated the restoration will cost $250,000 and members of the public can make a tax free donation at any local Bendigo Bank branch from next Tuesday. The project has already attracted in-kind assistance, especially by experts in design and engineering.” The aim is to complete this project by July next year, so it can be unveiled on the 101st anniversary of Vahland’s death.

Improve the fair As your pages are resplendent with articles about local tourist attractions, it is worth focusing on their place in the contemporary economic landscape. The greatest contribution is made where the tourist industry is winning foreign currency. It is of little importance if local people are visiting Fortuna in the same way that Adam Smith claimed that playing the piano was not an economic activity. If coaches from Adelaide were calling at Fortuna for inspections and entertainment as an alternative route to get to Melbourne this produces an invisible export contributing to the national accounts. Similarly the Chinese Museum is not worth further investment while it fails to attract Chinese Nationals. This would be best achieved by expanding Easter festivities rather than contributing to their truncation and demise. While the local tourist industry relies heavily on voluntary labour there is a need for a more professional approach, most importantly a paid director for Easter. Mick Sandiford, Eaglehawk

Wake up to job need I was very concerned to see the new ABS labour figures which show that Victoria is shedding jobs under the Andrews Government. Before the election Mr Andrews promised 100,000 full-time jobs within two years. This month’s ABS labour figures show that he is not delivering on his jobs promise. Mr Andrews would need to have delivered 25,000 new full-time jobs in the first six months to be on track meet his target. The new figures confirm that since December last year nearly 9500 full-time jobs have been lost in Victoria. Instead of trying to buy votes by announcing public holidays that hurt local business and risk local jobs, the government needs to wake up and get serious about creating Victorian jobs. The future of regional Victoria depends on it. Wendy Lovell MP, Member for Northern Victoria Region

Remembering On October 24 a military commemorative service will be held in the Mandurang Hall.

This commemorative service is for all the descendants of John Billman who migrated in 1850, settled in Mandurang, his sister Sarah Ann Bennett (nee Billman) who migrated in 1852 and settled in Sebastapol. Their cousins William and Albert Billman who migrated in 1888 and settled in Mackay and Rockhampton and their cousin’s son Edward Billman who migrated in 1914 and settled in Sydney. Go red for women On behalf of the Heart Foundation, I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Go Red for Women campaign. Go Red for Women is the Heart Foundation’s annual awareness and fundraising campaign that shines a light on the area of heart disease in women. It is our attempt to save the lives of Australian women from this debilitating, chronic disease. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australian women but with the help of the community we can help to educate more women about the ways they can reduce their risk. There is no single cause of heart disease, but risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being a smoker, being physically inactive, carrying too much weight and eating an unhealthy diet increase your chance of developing it. Ninety per cent of Australian women have at least one risk factor for heart disease. Two in three women have at least two risk factors and one in six women have at least four risk factors for heart disease. The good news however is that heart disease is largely preventable by limiting the lifestyle risk factors and staying on top of the clinical ones. The Heart Foundation has been running the Go Red for Women campaign since 2008 and in that time awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of Australian women has increased from 20 per

cent in 2009 to 34 per cent in 2014. By 2017 the Heart Foundation is aiming to have pushed this figure up to 50 per cent of women. With the support of the community we can make real in roads to defeating heart disease in Australian women. Diana Heggie, Chief Executive Officer, Heart Foundation Victoria

How low can we go? The recent episodes of the Killing Season on the ABC starring Rudd and Gillard, was all but given a standing ovation from our feisty prime minister. I love the ABC, I really do, he said. Well, that didn’t last long. Zaky Mallah’s appearance on the Q&A programme has resulted in a flurry of vitriolic venom, complete condemnation, and calls to shut it down Why are you interfering with a public broadcaster, and running political Royal Commissions, with the specific purpose of attempting to control Australia under an oppressed one party system? We have just witnessed opposition leader Bill Shorten appear at the Abbott Royal Commission and answer 900 questions. When was the last time Tony Abbott answered a question? He wants Q&A transferred to the 7.30 Report to avoid scrutiny and give the usual non-answers.

I bet Joe Hockey is breathing a sigh of relief. His last appearance on Q&A, resulted in him misquoting statistics on four occasions. As far as the Royal Commission goes, of course the judge will criticise Shorten in the wash up. That’s what he was appointed for. I stand to be corrected, but I doubt the judge would be a member of the Labor party. Can we have somebody, anybody, to at least take some interest in the country, instead of attempting to crush anybody with a different opinion, or face a Royal Commission or government control. Tony Abbott said that he was concerned that Shorten short-changed some of his workers. Ordinary workers would be the last people on his mind. Crush the union movement, in an attempt to reduce conditions. Crush the public broadcaster to eliminate any adverse criticism. Rupert Murdoch has made no secret of the fact that the ABC effects his bottom line. But this is not North Korea. What’s next – house arrest? Ken Price, Eaglehawk

Have the conversation This year, more than three million Australians will experience depression or anxiety or both. Today, seven Australians will die by suicide. It may be someone in

your family, a person you work with or a mate on your footy team. You may have noticed something is amiss, but you’re not sure if you should say something. You’re not the only one who feels this way. Many people don’t know what to say or worry they could make the situation worse by approaching the person. However, reaching out to someone you’re worried about is often the catalyst for that person starting on the road to recovery. To help people to have what could be a difficult chat, beyondblue has produced a guide on how to Have the Conversation. The guide, which was funded with donations from the Movember Foundation, explains how having a conversation can help people feel less alone and more supported in getting help, and what to do if your attempt to have the conversation is met with a bad reaction. A recent independent evaluation of beyondblue’s Have the Conversation resource found it has been accessed on the website almost 900,000 times. If you are struggling a bit, but don’t know how to reach out for support, or you’re concerned about someone else, but don’t know what to say, visit www.beyondblue.org.au/ conversations you can speak to a mental health professional any time, day or night, by contacting beyondblue’s Support Service on 1300 22 4636. Time to celebrate

THERE’S good economic news on two fronts for our city this week and that’s double the reason to hopefully celebrate sometime soon. Firstly, confirmation one of Queensland’s richest families, the pioneering entrepreneurial aviation-loving Toowoomba based Wagner family, is interested in playing a role in the $15 million development of our new airport. There have been few economic development projects in recent times loaded with as much expectation and anticipation as the redevelopment of the Bendigo airport runway and associated works in the airport precinct. Now that the necessary $15m of funding has been secured, the pressure will shift from being a desire and a dream to being one of expectation. Almost every major business

Editorial Comment leader in our business community has in the past decade or so identified the inadequate facilities of the Bendigo airport as a barrier to possible growth. Media has been told that not having a decent airport or one that some industry figures could fly directly into meant there was a reluctance, or even a refusal, to invest in our city. But that’s all about to change. And the Wagner family knows a thing or two about business, and in particular, the airport business. Their support, and interest, in our airport project is a good sign for things to come, and gives us good reason to be optimistic

that the airport redevelopment will be a major boon for our city. And now comes news of Parmalat, another Queensland-based business interested in doing more business in our city. The dairy giant is poised to invest millions into its landmark North Bendigo plant in a move that would well and truly cement the company’s future in the region. For as long as local dairy farmers can continue to supply the company with the produce it needs to produce world class dairy products, then it would seem Bendigo is on another winner. It’s not every day that a local manufacturer announces plans to invest up to $67m into its local facilities. But the payoff for Bendigo from this investment should be a lot more.

pk Seeking higher education with Peter Kennedy

WELL done to Senator Bridget McKenzie for this week hosting the first of an expected 15 national higher education forums for regional Australians. While Bendigo families are fortunate to have access to good higher education options right on our doorstep, many must still face up to the prospect of trudging off to Melbourne or points further afield in pursuit of a life changing post-secondary education. With that comes an extraordinary physical and social cost to local families who face a lot more than social dislocation and isolation, and including expensive accommodation and living expenses, and difficulty in sourcing suitable part time employment for students who need to better support themselves. That regional communities continue to be significantly under-represented in the university graduate community is a major disappointment and a circumstance that warrants a lot more attention. Speaking from experience, it is difficult for many of our young people, and their parents, to access support from the federal government or its tranche of income supports such as Youth Allowance and Rent Assistance.

In many cases, it can be nigh on impossible. A gap year is a great idea, but with double-digit youth employment in most regional communities, access to suitable employment to earn the necessary $23,000 or so over an 18 month period can be tough. And if your child needs to move away to find gap year employment, there’s even more costs that families must face up to.

fund and support universities that are regionally based. Broader courses, more regionally focussed programmes and more funding for universities that cater for students in regional and rural areas would also create a positive economic boost for the communities, such as Bendigo, that are fortunate to have tertiary education options within the fold. Escalating university course fees and continued un-

The greatest investment we as parents can make Allowing would be students to include time spent as community volunteers in lieu of working in paid employment makes sense. At least there’s a community benefit still being obtained while the future student makes a worthwhile contribution to the society which will at least partially support them through their studies. But governments doing more to support regional Australian families who want better access to support for their children in higher education is just one side of the ledger. Governments could also do a lot worse than to better

certainty in the tertiary education sector will do little to ease the financial burden and pressures many families, and especially regional and rural families, face in their bid to provide the very best for their children. There’s nothing wrong in wanting what’s best for your children. Investing in our children’s education remains the greatest investment we as parents can make. It’s just a pity sometimes it’s so hard to get the government to support more of us along the way. twitter@peterkennedy23 pk@bendigopublishing.com

Local Lawyer Joins Arnold Dallas McPherson Local firm Arnold Dallas McPherson this week welcomed experienced Lawyer Anna Howard to its team. Principal of the firm John McPherson said, “We’re delighted to have a Lawyer of Anna’s extraordinary quality join us, and become part of what we seek to maintain as the best and most accessible personal injuries law firm in Central Victoria. As well as working in personal injuries law, Anna’s appointment to the role of Pro-Bono Co-Ordinator within the firm will assist us in providing a more systematic approach to the social justice legal work that has always been an essential part of the firm’s ethos.” Anna is no stranger to the legal needs of central Victorians, as for the past 5 years she worked at the Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre, predominantly as Principal Lawyer but also as coordinator of the successful Talking Justice public discussion series. Anna’s broad legal experience was shaped by her beginnings as a Corporate Lawyer in a top tier Melbourne firm, later as instructing Solicitor in native title test cases in the Torres Strait, and most recently with the community legal centre. Anna is proud to be working at such a highly regarded local firm and looks forward to continuing to serve the needs of the local community. She said, “I grew up in Warrnambool in a large family, so I relate to country Victorians and understand their legal needs. I intended to move to Central Victoria for a short time, but stayed because I found the connections, the landscape and the legal work so fulfilling.” Anna has spent her career so far achieving justice for her clients through the law and would be pleased to talk to anyone about legal rights which they

may have in relation to injuries or disputes. “I am passionate about ensuring that people are treated fairly and are able to access the justice system in circumstances when they are not. Achieving excellent outcomes for my clients is for me deeply motivating and satisfying,” she said. Anna has strong family links to the Central Victorian region. Her grandmother was born in Maryborough and her grandfather in Eaglehawk. She moved to Castlemaine from Melbourne, along with her partner, in order to be near her sister who has a large family. Anna has since had a daughter (who is now 2) and has become an active member of the community. She is on the Board of Bendigo Foodshare. Arnold Dallas McPherson Lawyers have been assisting Central Victorians with local representation for over 20 years with offices in Bendigo, Castlemaine, Echuca and Shepparton. For more information, contact Anna Howard on 5445 9238 or Sandy Hall Marketing Manager on 5441 5222.

Clean sweep for Mary

S

ITTING in the audience of the matinee performance Mary Poppins last Saturday, I was as equally enchanted by the transfixed expressions of the children as with the actual production itself. Around me were hundreds of children (and adults) who for the first time had the experience of seeing a live musical performance. There is something about theatre with its reality, its immediacy, colour, music and movement which lifts the

audience into another dimension. These are real people up there you could hear the children thinking. A long way from their iPads, movies and electronic games they were deeply moved and stimulated by the experience. It is a credit to the commitment of the Bendigo Theatre Company that they gave our community such a high quality, full scale production. But that level of expertise doesn’t happen overnight.

The BTC was originally formed in 1952 as the Bendigo Operatic Society with a charter to be an “active and enthusiastic company”. In 1980 the company changed its name to the Bendigo Theatre Company. BTC secretary Gael Emond said that Mary Poppins was a testament to what the founders of our company were striving to achieve. “Their mission statement was that live theatre must be accessible and affordable to all members of the

community,” she said. The production was a remarkable commitment from many people. Hundreds of hours were given by 38 cast members and the 40 plus backstage and production crew, including the directors, the orchestra, theatre technicians, costume designers, dressers and creators of more than 200 costumes. The other factor which lifted Mary Poppins was the Ulumbarra Theatre.

Our state of the art facility allowed the BTC to spread its wings and literally fly. With the aid of her umbrella Mary Poppins’ ability to descend and ascend to the skies (compliments of sponsors who brought in extra technical equipment) had the children gobsmacked. Filled with energy and colour, the BTC’s Mary Poppins was a sheer joy. – Dianne Dempsey

Guitarists vie for Phil Lazenby award O

N Sunday three of central Victoria’s most promising young guitarists will join an impressive line up of blues and roots acts at The Goldmines Hotel. They will compete for a spot in the final of the Lazenby Young Blues Guitarist Award in November. An initiative of the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival, the award aims to showcase the talent of blues guitarists aged 20 and under, and encourage them on their musical journey. Coordinator Andrew Watts

said the award was a fitting tribute to the late Phil Lazenby, who was a great supporter of youth in Bendigo and a passionate muso in his younger years. “After Phil died in 2013, a group of close friends wanted to find a way to keep his passion for young people and music alive,” Watts said. “With the support of the Lazenby family and the festival the memorial award became a reality in 2014.” “Three contestants will take part in the second heat on Sun-

day, including one of last year’s finalists Murray Colbert. He is joined by 16-year-old Geordie Scarce from Bendigo and Brandon Trickey from Maryborough, who is 17.” Watts said the competition stood out from other music awards because of its focus, less on the accolades and more on having fun. “Contestants don’t have to rehearse a set piece until their fingers bleed. We encourage them to be themselves, improvise and enjoy the experience,” Watts said.

The return of Cass P

ERFORMING a song with a plea to sober up at a pub named The Drunken Poet may not immediately endear you with patrons. But Cassie Ward and Bianca Maes, who form the talented duo Cass are discovering a rich vein of new opportunities and new fans since their move from Heathcote to Melbourne. The pair have been performing at many popular Melbourne venues of late including The Brunswick Hotel, Open Studio, and The Drunken Poet, but return to Bendigo for this Sunday’s Ewes, Brews, Stews and Blues event at the Goldmines Hotel – a venue Ward clearly enjoys. “Goldmines (Hotel) is definitely a hub for live music and provides a welcoming space for musicians to work their magic,” Ward said. “There are so many great artists performing at this showcase. Some of my local favourites as well as artists from out of town. I am always eager to hear Sleepy West and Alister Turrill but am also excited to hear from some performers I haven’t had the chance to see yet such as William Alexander.” Melbourne’s influence and a growing maturity combine to create a “more chilled, electric vibe” in Cass’ new songs, written since last year’s Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival. “I think as people age

By exposing yourself to different genres and other people’s music you unconsciously model your own,” Ward said. “With more life experience comes a higher level of wisdom and I think that shows in people’s music, especially in song writing. Our sound has definitely moved forward reflecting our growth as both individuals and a group.” That personal growth has led Maes to become part of the Musicians for Detainees program, organising musical performances

The Australian Sheep and Wool Show is the largest event of its kind in the world and will be held at Bendigo’s Prince of Wales Showgrounds from this weekend, presenting wool classing competition, fashion design, retail shopping and a variety of food and networking events. Central Victoria’s local food network Food Fossickers has partnered with the show’s Bendigo Festival of Lamb to present a local lamb influence in the lead up to the festival and across the show weekend presenting a lamb signature dish series. Swansong for Weekly’s Scoop It’s a great relief for our ears, tuneless Christine is heading off

T

HERE are plenty of good things I could say about my colleague Christine “Scoop” McGinn, but let’s hold back for a minute. I cannot get past her total lack of singing skill. While I have to admit it’s not a prerequisite for a journalist to be able to warble, when the said journalist insists on singing at every opportunity it becomes an issue. Singing is too loose a term for the god-awful noises Scoop emits. I have been around for a long time, but I can honestly say Scoop has the worst singing voice I have ever heard. It’s very hard to describe, but think flat monotone instead of variety, and even that monotone is not a precise note. It’s like a comedy act where somebody is pretending they can’t sing, but nobody could act that well. I’ve come to dread Scoop’s rendition of Kylie’s “I Should Be So Lucky,” because anyone in the vicinity is certainly not lucky. I an effort to teach Scoop the basics of music I asked her to sing a scale. Scoops’s idea of the sound of music certainly made me want to run for the hills. We tried “Doe A Deer” only to hear an erratic scattering of flat and sharp notes, not one sounding any-

thing like a part of any song, ever. It baffles me how anyone can get it so wrong. Based on the fact music is just an infinite variation of sound I can’t understand how Scoop can never hit a note. Any note. They always miss. Just enough to sound painful, and just enough to ruin any song she attempts to sing.

What started out as a joke is now dreaded. We’ve banned Scoop from singing “Happy Birthday” and any utterances of any song are halted immediately by general consent in the office. The funny thing about all of this, is Scoop does not really believe she can’t sing. She goes through life murder-

ing songs and torturing notes with every rendition a whodunnit. As in guess that tune. Believe me, nobody has any idea which song she is trying to sing. I know this may sound harsh, but I did have an admission from Scoop which gave me heart. Her dad sang her “Happy Birthday” last month and she had to

agree “I know where I get it from”. So, that over with I have to admit I will miss the young reporter who, like so many before her, is heading of to the bright lights of Melbourne. But I promise you this, I will not miss her bloody awful singing. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

Gold in the gutter M

ARKET Square was the area bounded by Mundy, Hargreaves and Williamson streets and Lyttleton Terrace. In the centre of Market Square was where the Sandhurst Borough Council built the Corn Exchange or Town Hall. Many Bendigonians are familiar with the excellent book by Frank Cusack, Bendigo a History, but very few will know that when he had drafted his manuscript, the title was Gold In The Gutter. Bendigo did once have gold in the gutter, and many other places as well. Some areas in what is now the business heart of Bendigo had never properly been worked to obtain the alluvial gold that was present in the pipe clay immediately above the bedrock. During the Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s there was extremely high unemployment in the community and practically no government handouts, for those so afflicted. Many people did whatever they could to put a little food on the table. Rabbiting was a solution, growing one’s own vegetables and bartering were other ways to attempt to stop the hunger. The Victorian government also encouraged

people to look for alluvial gold. Equipped with some basic tools and a “miners right”, one could stake their own claim. The site of the old police lockup in Market Square was thought to be a likely spot of virgin ground to mark out a claim for one Bendigo pair of men. Mr T Williamson, along with his much younger mate Mr L Frank, pegged out their claim on the site of the lockup which in 1932 was being demolished, as it had outlived its role. There were other lockup facilities in closer proximity to the Law Courts building in Pall Mall, then available for the police. While the lock up was being demolished, Williamson had pegged out his claim covering the lock-up site and the area immediately beyond. Williamson also sought approval from the Bendigo City Council to sink a shaft on the ground that had been vested to the council as a market area. The then Mines Department also had to give its approval. Approvals were expedited quite quickly compared to today when something of this nature will be shuffled from one desk to another, and if you are fortunate, 18 months later there may be an answer.

HE National Biography Award is Australia’s preeminent prize for biographical writing and memoirs. Since its inception the National Biography Award has been a champion of quality biographies. The six books on this year’s shortlist are: Moving Among Strangers: Randolph Stow and My Family by Gabrielle Carey (UQP); Citizen Emperor: Napoleon in Power 1799 - 1815 by Philip Dwyer (Bloomsbury); To Begin To Know: Walking in the Shadows of My Father by David Leser (Allen & Unwin); A Singular Vision, Harry Seidler by Helen O’Neill (Harper Collins); The Feel-Good Hit of the Year: A Memoir by Liam Pieper (Pengiun Books Australia) and An Unsentimental Bloke by Philip Butterss (Wakefield Press). An Unsentimental Bloke is the biography of CJ Dennis. Once the poet of choice of the early 20th century working class and the author of Doreen and The Sentimental Bloke, CJ Dennis is often overlooked by contemporary readers but as the judges of the award say this biography is long overdue. “Butterss’ book explains how cultural change as well as Dennis’ own colourful personal history created this gap in the record of our literature,

now brilliantly filled in by a first class biography which is richly rewarding,” the judges’ citation explained. An Unsentimental Bloke traces CJ Dennis’ personal and literary struggles, his triumphs, and his profound impact on the ways that Australians see themselves. It covers his early years in rural South Australia, his work on a bohemian newspaper in Adelaide and his move to Melbourne as a freelancer for the Bulletin. Many people have regarded Dennis himself as a sentimental bloke, but Philip Butterss shows he was a much more complex and sometimes darker personality. As well as examining his humorous and lovable side, this biography is frank about Dennis’ struggles with alcohol and depression, his political activism, his marriage, and his financial dealings. The winner of the National Biography Award will be announced on Monday, August 3 at the State Library of NSW.

A new direction in total beauty care BENDIGO Beauty and Haircare now has a new look and feel, since Brittany Murdoch acquired the salon late last year. Extensive renovations and a new partnership with Skin Science and Clear Derma Laser Clinic’s laser technician Sharon Aryres, has seen the salon develop its hairdressing sector and become a full service beauty salon. “We now offer a luxurious and thorough approach to the hair and beauty industry, all under the one roof,” Brittany said. “We aim to give all our clients a friendly, exceptional and unique experience to really pamper, while providing amazing hair and skin results.”

A recent beauty launch night at the salon demonstrated to new and existing clients the many services avaliable. “It was an eye opener for clients to see how non-invaisive and how exceptionally quick the results of these services are,” Sharon said. The evening also included live demonstrations of the new anti-wrinkle injection services and Dermologica bio-surface peel. “Laser, in the past, has been a taboo topic with many people to afraid to ask how it works and if it is suited,” Brittany said. “It was amazing to see after a few demonstrations

how easy and fast this treatment can work.” Sharon is offering a variety of laser treatments which include: active acne treatment, skin rejuvenation and laser toning, tattoo removal and decreasing the appearance of mild to moderate scaring and stretch marks. “Laser treatment is also highly effective in reducing pigment discolouration, age spots and repairing sun damage along with facial hair removal,” Sharon said. Bendigo Beauty and Haircare at 62 Bridge Street, Bendigo, phone 5443 3422 for a complete range of hair and beauty care six days a week.

EELING colder than usual this winter? Is your ceiling insulated with blow-in insulation commonly used 20 to 30 years ago? If so, chances are you would benefit from a new joint service offered by two locally owned companies Gutter-Vac and Flat Batts. In just one day Gutter-Vac’s Adam Issaccs and Flat Batts’ Mark Mitchell can have your home or business more comfortable no matter what the season, warmer in winter, cooler in summer. “The older style blow-in insulation is not really very effective at keeping heat in or out,” Adam said, while explaining that Gutter-Vac can quickly remove any old inefficient installation before Mark from Flat Batts installs industry compliant, high performance insulation. “By increasing the R value (thermal

rating) of your ceiling insulation, your heating and cooling appliances are engaged less therefore decreasing the amount of energy you use, which in turn puts more money in your pocket,” Mark said. Gutter-Vac’s industrial vacuum is also ideal for a variety of cleaning jobs around the home, office or factory including keeping your gutters clear. It can also be used for water tank and chimney cleans, in fact it can be used for a range of extraction jobs including industrial cleanups. And best of all, both Gutter-Vac’s and Flat Batt’s services are backed up with a satisfaction guarantee. To speak to Adam about any of GutterVac’s services phone 0419 097 779 or to find more about insulation, phone Mark from Flat Batts on 0432 172 351.

Choose a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will support 125 kilograms at up to 16 kilometres an hour. While that might not sound fast you still would travel more than five kilometres in 20 minutes So if you want to stay or get fit this winter then give Daryl and the team at Mr Rental a call on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778. Or why not personally call into their easy to find premises at 80b Garsed Street, just below the Bendigo Marketplace.

Expiring Memorials

Do you have a family member that passed away before 1991? Was this family member cremated? Did they have their ashes placed at a Memorial in Bendigo, Eaglehawk, White Hills or Kangaroo Flat Remembrance Parks?

If you believe that a family member had their cremated remains placed in a memorial (excluding graves) in one of the above remembrance parks prior to 1991, it is possible that the position was for a limited tenure period only. If you think you may be affected, please contact our administration office to enquire about these limited tenure memorials on: 03 5446 1566 or via email to enquiries@rpcv.com.au

LOUD accounting allows you to access your financial information online from any computer, tablet or smart phone anywhere. There are many benefits to using cloud accounting. In addition to the flexibility of accessing your data anywhere and anytime, you never need to install software on a device and updates are automatic. Servers are actively monitored and maintained and generally offer a higher level of security than many small business networks and staff laptops. But why move to cloud accounting? “Good question,” AFS & Associates Brad King said while explaining it improves data accuracy, eliminates delays at key compliance times and helps your accountant provide timely financial advice throughout the year, not just at tax time. “At AFS we want to help you achieve business success all year round.”

Which cloud package should I choose? “Choosing an accounting software package to suit your business is often a difficult but important decision to make. “The right package can free up your time, make meeting your tax and compliance obligations easier all while helping you plan your finances.” AFS can help you with any software package, or help you to choose the best package to suit your unique circumstances. If you are looking for a software package to make your business more efficient, something that grows with you and your business and is affordable, then contact Brad King or any one of AFS & Associates’ cloud accounting superheroes today. Thunder chases finals By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO Thunder coach Craig Riddiford believes his side is still capable of making finals, despite facing an uphill battle to do so over its last six games of the home and away season. With six games left in the Victorian Women’s Football League season Bendigo sits sixth, twoand-a-half games outside the final five, but faces a relatively easy schedule over its closing games. First-year coach Craig Riddiford, who has relished the challenge of taking on the job, says the team’s win at the weekend over Darebin was an extremely pleasing performance. “It was a really good effort from the girls, especially considering we put in a really poor showing the week prior,” he said. “I think the team, and the club itself, was really disappointed with the performance against St Kilda the week before, so to see the girls come back with that was great.” Bendigo held Darebin to just two behinds in the 34-point win, with an even contribution across the board according to Riddiford. “It was a really even game in terms of our team, we played well for the four quarters and didn’t have many standouts because the whole team played pretty well I thought,” he said. “We have definitely improved from the start of the season. We probably had 13 or 14 new play-

SPORTY GATHERING HUNDREDS of local school children attended a multi-cultural schools football and netball day at North Bendigo’s Atkins Street Oval on Thursday. The day was run by AFL Central Victoria in association with Netball Victoria, with Foxy Vixen, AFL Victoria’s David Rodan and One Netball ambassador Elaine Osei-Safo among many special guests at the day. Students had the chance to try their hand at both football and netball with skills clinics held before round-robin tournaments closed out the day.

ers at the start of the year, and they have come along really strongly. “This year has set a really good base for the club, not only in trying to reach finals but for future years as well.” As for that finals goal, the team believes it can still make it despite facing an uphill battle to get there. However, after going winless in the VWFL premier division last season, the club looks to have found its place and has an oppor-

tunity to strengthen itself heading into coming seasons. “We would love to make finals, but it is not all about that,” Riddiford said. “We have worked closely with the youth girls competition, to make sure we can get more talent coming through in years to come. “I think we can win the majority of our games toward the end of tis season, and hopefully be there come finals time. It would be huge

for the club.” The Thunder is also holding its major fundraiser for the year next month. The club’s reverse raffle draw night will be held on Saturday, August 15 at the Lake Weeroona Rowing Club. Tickets are $60 per person for the evening, which includes food and drinks. More more information go to www.bendigowomensfootballclub.com

ACTION TIME: Soccer returns.

BENDIGO Amateur Soccer league action returns this weekend after the league’s mid-season break. League cup action marks the resumption of the season, with the fourth round of matches being played on Sunday. In pool two, Spring Gully takes on Colts United at Stanley Avenue, while in pool one matches Moama hosts Strathdale and Eaglehawk plays Epsom. The BASL also recently announced the signing of an agreement with the Australian Futsal Association (AFA) to continue the rapid growth of the sport in the Bendigo region. Under the agreement, the AFA will take on the management and administration of the

futsal competition in Bendigo for 2015/16. It will provide the opportunity to develop the sport and bring much needed coaching and skills to the region. A conditional option paves the way for this to become a long-term arrangement and support investment in much needed facilities. “We welcome the expertise AFA brings to the development of Futsal in the region,” BASL president Adam Woods said. “We are enormously proud of the efforts we have made to get this sport off the ground and see Futsal as highly complementary to the development of the outdoor game where fast foot skills and fitness are paramount.”

From Page 48 Lewis admits he was unsure of what to expect from Bendigo, after growing up in Chicago and playing in Melbourne. As with all Braves imports, Lewis has had plenty of work to do in the community with school clinics and junior coaching, and he can not get enough of it. “I like Bendigo. It’s a nice quiet little place, there is definitely enough to do here,” he said. “Netflix being in Australia has helped, I watch a lot of that. But I enjoy training, going to cross-fit on Mondays and do a lot of kids clinics. “I coach an under-10 Girton team, and the clinics are

WIN A DOUBLE PASS 21–23 AUGUST 2015 MELBOURNE SHOWGROUNDS

THE South Bendigo Football Netball club is holding its annual Sportsmans Luncheon on Saturday, August 1 at its Queen Elizabeth Oval clubrooms. Hosted by long-time local sports media personality Brendan Baker, the luncheon will feature two AFL legends in Jason Akermanis and Anthony Stevens. Akermanis, a triple premiership player with Brisbane and Brownlow medallist, was inducted into the AFL’s Hall of Fame this year. Stevens is a North Melbourne legend, a two-time club best and fairest as well as a two-time premiership player in 1996 and 1999. Catered by the Boundary Hotel, the luncheon will feature a twocourse meal and drinks provided between 12-4pm. Tickets are $90 per head or $700 for a table of eight. great. I love the kids, I love to see how happy the game makes them. I’m a big kid at heart, so it puts a smile on my face.” While he takes his profession extremely seriously, he rates himself as the team’s resident prankster. The 26-year-old celebrated his birthday on July 2, and despite plenty of jokes being exchanged between he and teammates, his housemate and Braves big man Michael Vigor still got him a present. “I came home from Melbourne and there was a card and a balloon at home. We can be nice to each other sometimes,” he said. Now Lewis is hoping that there will be more to celebrate at season’s end.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, July 17, 2015

WEEKLY SPORT Coach boosts Roos IT is time for Kangaroo Flat to stand up and show it is a finals calibre side. That is the message of Kangaroos coach Jason Stevens heading into a crucial game against Eaglehawk on Saturday. The Roos were destroyed by an under-strength Golden Square in round 12 to the tune of 69 points, and are looking for a bounce-back performance against the Two Blues.

“We expect a better showing this week, no doubt.” The Roos have conceded the third most opposition points this season with 1209, which sees them with a percentage of 78.83 – over 20 percentage points lower than fifth-placed Castlemaine. After missing the finals on percentage last season, Stevens knows his side needs to tighten up its defence. That fact is no more prudent than this week when Flat has to stifle Ron Best Medal leader Matt Gretgrix, who booted 10 first half goals on his way to 12 in the first meeting behind the two sides at Canterbury Park earlier this year. “It is defensive pressure, but it’s also work rate that needs to lift. We lack a little bit of what we were good at last year, which was running back and supporting

Back in the action

We need a big performance this weekend Not only does the side need to rebound from its last outing, but also the 125-point belting the Hawks dealt Kangaroo Flat in round four. “We need a big performance this weekend, it is an opportunity to put our hands up as a side and really build some momentum toward September,” Stevens, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday, said. “We play three of the topfour sides in our last six games, and we need to beat one of those teams to make it a lot easier for ourselves to make finals. “As a coaching group, and as a playing group, that game was reviewed, but after it we drew a line in the sand and said ‘that’s not us’. There were so many things that happened that day that just were not up to standard.

our defence and we are allowing far too many one-on-ones inside defensive 50,” Stevens said. “We need to be accountable, but we also need to play to our structure and get numbers back behind the ball and help our defenders out, without losing any attacking power which is a hard balance to find.” In a big boost to Flat’s chances, the second-year coach expects co-captain Corey Greer to slot back into the side. “That’s a big in for us, he is a super player, obviously one of our leaders and really gives us some drive through the middle of the ground,” he said. “We know this weekend is a big test, but we see it as a big opportunity at home. We are going to need to be at our best to beat them, and hopefully we can do that on Saturday.”

By JOEL PETERSON

FOR Bendigo Pioneers young gun Jayden Burke, 2015 has been about learning the ins and outs of football back to front – literally. The Golden Square junior has grown up playing mostly as a forward, including some impressive appearances for the Bulldogs during the club’s 2014 Bendigo Football Netball League finals campaign. This year the talented 18-year-old has made the move to play down back permanently, and is learning plenty along the way. The positional move has paid dividends for the 188cm defender. He is one of only four Pios players to feature in each of the club’s

12 games this season, in his first year on the list. “I’m really enjoying it, it’s good footy and it’s always good to have a run around with some different people, make new friends and keep learning more about the game,” Burke said, after a freezing training at Epsom Huntly on Wednesday night. “I’ve learnt that the intensity is a lot higher, it is a pretty run and gun game. “The biggest thing I have learnt through (coach Brett Henderson) is you have to have that defensive mindset, and you create your attack from defence.” While his ability in the air and effective ball use have seen Burke quickly become a mainstay of Hen-

derson’s first choice defensive unit, he continues to be deployed by Nick Carter as a forward at Golden Square. He says he always enjoys going back to Square – regardless of what position he ends up playing – as he will this weekend when the Pioneers’ bye week coincides with a key clash for Square against Gisborne. “Jaffa”, as he is known, is expected to slot back into the senior side for the clash, a challenge that is encouraged by Henderson and relished by his young charges. “I have been at Square since I was about eight playing in the under-10s. I love it there, it is a great club, and it is always good to go back,” he said. “Sometimes playing in

defence then forward can throw you off, but I think I have learnt how to be a better forward by playing in defence, and a better defender by playing forward. After the bye week Bendigo takes on last-placed Western Jets at home, a game Burke says the club is already looking forward to as a big opportunity for a second win of the season. “There is no doubt it is a winnable game,” he said. “When we played them earlier in the year they beat us by 20 points, but I think we have improved a lot since then. “If we can keep our pressure up all day and keep that attack on the ball for four quarters, there is no reason we can’t win.”

Serious intent By JOEL PETERSON

HE may be a self-confessed joker off the court, but when he hits the hardwood Tony Lewis is as intense and serious as they come. It is that intensity that not only won him the South East Australian Basketball League Most Valuable Player award last season, but has seen him become the driving force behind Bendigo’s championship quest in 2015. That dream still has a chance of becoming a reality, and Lewis has a warning for opposition teams to heed over the season’s finals stages – look out, because the Braves’ best is yet to come. The Braves sit third in the league’s south conference with eight games to play before the playoffs get under way. While the team has a 9-7 win-loss record and has played well, the

reigning league MVP thinks the team hasn’t scratched the surface of its best. “I would definitely say ‘look out’. We have played good basketball, but we haven’t played great yet,” Lewis said this week. “We still little things that we can work on and improve. The team has

talking so far this season. Lewis is fourth in the league in scoring (22 points per game) and leads the league in rebounding by a wide margin, pulling down over 12 boards per contest. While he has struggled with his shot at times this season, he is also shooting a scorching 40 per cent on 86

I would definitely say ‘look out’. We have played good basketball, but we haven’t played great yet a lot of talent, and even though there are a lot of good teams in the league we definitely believe can be good enough.” The 200cm forward has quickly become both a fan favourite and a favourite of those within the club, with coach Ben Harvey describing him last month as a “warrior”. His work on the training track goes unseen to many, but he has let his play on the court do the

three-point attempts. “I put a lot of time and practice in to my game in the gym and work on my shot a lot, so I guess that shows I’m doing the right things,” Lewis said. “All my teammates are great, they have made fitting in really easy.”
