Bendigo, 2014. We are as prosperous now as we have been at any time since the Goldrush. Yet, 1600 kids go to school hungry every day and more than 30 per cent live on or below the poverty line.

As Anti-Poverty week winds up, community and political leaders are being encouraged, when making budget decisions, to focus on the ...

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Agents in the awards

ONE of Bendigo’s leading real estate firms has won a national accolade for its work with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The Professionals’ annual awards night was held at the Melbourne Town Hall last weekend, with the Bendigo office winning the prestigious award in recognition of its outstanding commitment to and support of the NBCF. The award is granted to an individual or office within The Professionals Australia-wide network that truly digs deep, commits their time and effort far beyond anyone else’s expectations, all in the name of a great cause. In announcing the Bendigo office as the winner of the award, the judges said the recipient really highlights what it means to be a Diamond Partner of the NBCF and how, most importantly, a community can come together to not only raise much needed funds for breast cancer research but also raise a level of awareness in a town for a cancer where one in eight women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. The Bendigo office also took home a national marketing award at last weekend’s event. Each year, The Profession-

City plans for the future

By CHRISTINE McGINN

ASPIRATIONS for Greater Bendigo city will come alive in a new report, to be released today. A compact city with reliable public transport options and more bicycles and less cars, is at the heart of the Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy report. The ambitious GHD Consultants report hopes to increase the number of people using public transport to 10 per cent of all trips. Under the plan, 80 per cent of children and 15 per cent of the workforce would regularly ride, walk or scoot to work or school. Council Planning and Development director Prue Mansfield said small changes would contribute to reshaping and growing a healthy and vibrant city. “Building more roads doesn’t actually fix the problem. This is our start of an attempt to change so we avoid that problem. It means changing people’s mindset a bit,” she said. “The stronger we can grow our

economy the greater chance we have of being a vibrant, lively city and not a place that doesn’t change.” The GHD Consultants report plans for Bendigo’s population to almost double by 2041. Ms Mansfield said a population of 200,000 by 2041 was aspirational but we needed to plan in case it happened. Principal urban designer Kevin Begg said it was important to plan for growth to ensure it developed in a visionary way for Bendigo. “The idea is to direct it, plan it, make it happen as you want to see it. A big part of this is when growth happens, it happens with Bendigo characteristics and maintains the city’s identity,” he said. The report was commissioned after community furore over the former transport strategy which focused on the development of roads. Mr Begg said there was a phenomenal amount of community engagement into the report. “This document represents the

pronged approach combining, projects, policy and programs. Mayor Barry Lyons said the report had the potential to significantly enhance the city. “Council’s aim is to ensure our roads are not heavily congested in the future and that people have the option of walking, cycling and catching reliable public transport to their destination,” he said. ITLUS steering committee chair Rod Campbell said planning for the future allowed Bendigo to escape transport woes. “This report recognises that transport planning will not succeed without an integrated approach that includes how and where we will live, work and play in the future,” he said. The report will be out for public comment until December 4 and the final report will be released next year. Locals can view the report and give their feedback online at www. bendigo.vic.gov.au/transportplanning

aspirations of the community todate,” he said. “Compact Bendigo is the overarching theme. There is a lot of discussion about how we move around Bendigo.” Children taking active transport to school or people riding or walk-

ing to work is considered an achievable short-term goal. Locals would be more enticed to ride and walk with safer paths, while an urban rail network would be developed over 30 years. Mr Begg said changing community attitudes would take a multi-

KALIANNA Special Development School council president Greg Ralph is calling for bipartisan political support for a new school. Mr Ralph wants the major parties to commit funding to build a new school in their first term of government, if elected on November 29. “What we need is a commitment from both sides of government, not just for them to have a close look,” he said. “Renovations to the existing building just wouldn’t work. VICTORIA Cross-winning hero Ben Roberts-Smith wowed the Bendigo business community during a luncheon this week. The former SAS soldier spoke at a Bendigo Business Council event, focusing on leadership and values. He revealed the amazing stories of his five Afghanistan tours, leaving the enthralled crowd speechless. He spoke of the importance of planning and decision making, under the most intense pressure. In response to a question from the audience, he also said his enemies were not motivated by religious beliefs but were simply about hate.

NEWS: How the story broke.

The Bendigo Weekly revealed in May the school was in dire need of either an upgrade or a rebuild. Bendigo’s two Liberal candidates announced this week they were urging the State Government to fund an upgrade. But the Labor Party last month promised to spend $1 million to help complete a masterplan for a school upgrade. Liberal Bendigo West candidate Greg Bickley questioned Labor’s move to only fund a “plan” for the school. But Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the Liberals’ had admitted to an “extraordinary” failure to support the school. “Kalianna’s new school needs to be planned well to meet the children’s needs as well as to support students into the future,” she said.

Epsom Aldi planned EXCLUSIVE By CHRISTINE McGINN

A $10 million expansion is planned for Epsom Village. Plans lodged with Greater Bendigo council will see an Aldi supermarket, a smaller retailer and childcare centre built on the site. Facing the internal carpark, the 1590-square-metre Aldi will open its doors from 8.30am to 8pm weekdays, an hour less on weekends and public holidays. The plans see the removal of the existing storage building and a transformation of the carpark. “The proposed development forms stage one of an updated four-stage masterplan for the centre and aims to integrate

with the existing business park to provide a cohesive centre to cater for the surrounding neighbourhood,” the application said. The supermarket, trolley and loading bays, car and bi-

Woolworths, two smaller retailers and nine speciality stores. “This site has been earmarked as one of a village centre and the proposed retail expansion serves to provide a greater range of goods available

with service and amenity areas, an office, staff room, kitchen, laundry and toilet facilities. Children will be able to climb on the large playground planned on the northern side of the building next to Kiln Street. Staff will be able to relax in their own private courtyard on the southern side of the building. About 120 car parks have been proposed for the development’s expansion with six bicycle spaces planned outside Aldi. Under the plans, the palm trees on the Midland Highway will be retained.

The proposed development forms stage one of an updated four-stage masterplan cycle spaces and signage will be built in the first stage. Pedestrians will be able to gather at a plaza forecourt between Aldi and the other retailer. The smaller retailer will occupy a 600m2 space. Epsom Village was built in 2008, and is currently home to

to local residents and expand on the retailer choice. The use of land for a childcare centre is an appropriate service that will sit comfortably alongside use of surrounding land for a range of purposes,” the application said. The 782m2 childcare centre will care for up to 92 children. It will feature five rooms

Survey leads to action THE Wellsford Forest Conservation Alliance plan to use the results of a recent survey to demand a moratorium on a particular tree coup in the forest. The Alliance also intends to use the information to further lobby local MPs for a Wellsford National Park. Along with the WFCA, 15 students from La Trobe University, the Bendigo Field Naturalists and the Bendigo Native Plant Group conducted a comprehensive ecological survey of the iconic big tree coup that lies in the heart of the Wellsford Forest. These groups have a common goal: to see an end to logging and to change the status of the Wellsford State Forest to a national park. WFCA spokesman Patrick Walters said the survey provided a unique opportunity for old and young to work together. “We studied the biodiversity of our local forest while learning how to implement skills and practices that are pertinent to our trade,” he said. “The field trip helped demonstrate how assessing native vegetation in a disciplined and practical fashion can have a meaningful and useful purpose, particularly in regards to conservation. “From the three quadrats we

surveyed we compiled a total of 65 individual plant species encompassing trees, understorey shrubs, herbs, orchids, moss and lichen.” Mr Walters said one quadrat contained up to 41 individual species, reflecting a highly diverse habitat. “The exercise was most beneficial for my fellow students at Latrobe university,” he said. “We’re hoping to come back each year from now on and reassess the quadrats so we can consolidate our data and further our observations. “The survey area contains significant red ironbark trees that are

more than 500 years old. This area is part of a coupe designated by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries for commercial wood harvesting over the next three years.” Mr Walters said the WFCA was concerned forestry activity would be detrimental to the integrity of the ecological structure of the area. “The DEPI have even recognised the site as a high biodiversity area and also a cultural sensitivity site regarding the Dja Dja Wurrung,” he said. “It seems crazy that they would nominate the big tree coupe for logging.

“The DEPI have mismanaged this forest for too long, it’s time we showed them we value this forest.” Mr Walters said making the Wellsford Forest a national park would be the most responsible environmental decision government could make. “Government should have the foresight to overlook immediate politics and see this forest as the great carbon sink it is and should be preserved for our future generations,” he said. “That’s the kind of cultural shift our community deserves.”

STATE ELECTION: Elise Chapman.

Chapman in the running GREATER Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman is unsure how long she will continue in her role in the lead-up to the state election. Ms Chapman was this week preselected as the Australian Country Alliance’s candidate for Bendigo West at the November poll. Municipal Association of Victoria guidelines recommend taking a leave of absence after being officially nominated. Ms Chapman said she was under no legal obligation to step aside. “I am still going to stay there,” she said. “If it gets too complicated I’m sure I’ll step aside, but I think I can do both.” Ms Chapman said she was “under no illusions” about winning. “I understand I am the underdog in this,” she said. Ms Chapman has been described by the party as a “grass roots campaigner for the common good” and as not being “scared of taking her concerns to task”. “I have finally found a grass-roots party that stands for what I believe in, common sense and Australian values,” she said. “Country Victoria is slowly being eroded by each government and their policies. “It’s time to get off the Labor-Lib/Nat merry-go-round and promote change.” One of the Alliance’s main policies, and one that appealed to Ms Chapman, is around local government. “We are calling for a complete review of the whole organisational structure of local government, including the powers of the chief executive officers and senior staff,” she said. “Everywhere I go people are disillusioned with the control council staff have over councils.” Ms Chapman said the party was also interested in promoting spending more money in regional and rural Victoria and less in Melbourne. – Anthony Radford

Listen to those in need

By ANTHONY RADFORD

FOR Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, Anti-Poverty Week has a very clear message – listen to those who need a voice. Ms Chesters said it was vital leaders at all levels took greater notice of those on or below the poverty line when making policies and constructing budgets. “Local state and federal governments need to apply a social lens to budgets and the impact budget decisions have on our most vulnerable at heart,” she said. “They need to consider the face of poverty when considering the

impact of their decisions. “The debate for 20 years has been about the economic impact of budgets. “When did we stop looking at what the community and social impacts are?” Ms Chesters said the recent de-

their bills.” Ms Chesters said the idea was also important at federal level, with local impacts. “The Australian government needs to call for real action, policy action, on the cost of basics,” she said.

Local state and federal governments need to apply a social lens to budgets bate about Greater Bendigo rates was a perfect example. “There has been very little discussion about how a six per cent rates increase would affect self-funded retirees or pensioners who own their own home,” she said. “If they just put on an economic lens they would ask themselves how they can offset the economic impact for those struggling to pay

“When do we draw the line to the energy companies and say your bills are too high. “The bills are going up, even without the carbon tax that was supposed to make them drop. “I am calling for there to be a debate and discussion about how energy is regulated in this country. “It is being regulated to make a profit. Is that fair when we need it to survive?”

Ms Chesters said the government itself could also make decisions that benefit Bendigo businesses and provide jobs. She said the recent decision that Australian Defence Apparel had to make about sending work to Vietnam to meet the government price was a case in point. “The social impact of having that contract in Australia would have far outweighed any short-term financial benefit,” she said. “I think people need to keep demanding their politicians to be held accountable and to energise.” Ms Chesters said Anti-Poverty Week was also a chance to ask about friends, family and neighbours. “Anti-Poverty Week is a chance to talk about those outside our circle and this anti-poverty campaign has helped that,” she said. “It is about really understanding your next-door neighbour might be just surviving.”

‘Look out for one another’ FEDERAL Shadow Payments and Disability Reform Minister Jenny Macklin visited Bendigo this week to urge locals to look out for one another. Ms Macklin visited the Bendigo Foodshare warehouse in Long Gully with Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters as part of Anti-Poverty Week. Ms Macklin urged the local community to get behind the organisation, which is raising money to guarantee its survival. “The volunteers are dong such a great job making sure food is available to people in Bendigo who really need it,” she said. “I want to say to everyone, dig deep for Foodshare.”

SCHOOL FAIR FOR GIRTON GIRTON Grammar school is holding its annual school fair on Sunday, November 2. Running for more than 20 years, the fair is the school’s largest fund raiser. School headmaster Matthew Maruff said the school community was looking forward to the event. “This event is the product of countless hours of volunteer work from the Girton Parents’ and Friends’ Association,” Mr Maruff said. “It is a wonderful day out not just for the Girton community but for all of Greater Bendigo families to enjoy. Everyone is welcome.” The all-ages event will showcase street rides, a disco limousine, a climbing wall, a tin can bowling alley, and a reptile display. Girton PFA president Margaret Keech said there was a lot to do before the event. “It will be a great day of fun for both children and adults,” Ms Keech said. “Parents can enjoy Devonshire tea or browse through the market stalls that include pot plants and a selection of fresh produce. “A silent auction will run throughout the day with several unique items on offer so people are encouraged to get there early and put in a bid.” There will also be a wine auction on the day beginning at 2pm with a live auction to follow. The fair will be held at Girton Grammar’s junior school site from 12pm to 4pm. Entry is free, through the Vine and MacKenzie streets entrances.

MESSAGE TO MARY: Students will help unveil a new honour to Saint Mary MacKillop. MORE than 500 school children from across the Catholic Sandhurst Diocese will feature in the unveiling of the new three-metre statue honouring Saint Mary MacKillop at Sacred Heart Cathedral today. Handwritten messages by the school children, who represent the seven Josephite schools founded by Saint Mary MacKillop in the Sandhurst Diocese, show just what a profound ripple effect that the Saint continues to have in the lives of the next generation. Her legacy of: “Never see a need without doing

Ball set for Luke COLLEAGUES and friends of Luke Hercus have been busy keeping his legacy alive. Luke Hercus died suddenly in 2009 and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank staff have since set up a charity, OG Tri Pty Ltd, in honour of their friend. A keen triathlete, Luke died from a heart condition called Wolfe Parkinson white syndrome. Luke was heavily involved in charity work and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank business banking manager Simon Coutanche said establishing OG Tri was a way “to keep the work Luke has done going.” The group was set up to raise money for PAN Inc, Surf Life Saving Victoria and Wolfe Parkinson white syndrome research, three of Luke’s favourite charities.

LEGACY: Luke Hercus. “Luke was heavily involved with PAN Inc,” Mr Coutanche said. “Using animal therapy to assist disadvantaged kids was his real passion.”

OG Tri is completely not-forprofit, and through fundraising events the charity has raised more than $20,000 for PAN Inc and another $5000 for other organisations including Bendigo Health. One of those fundraisers is the annual Halloween Ball. Held at the Shamrock Hotel, the all of the money raised goes to the charities Luke felt passionate about. “It’s a great way to keep Luke’s legacy alive,” Mr Coutanche said. The event is a fun night to be had by all, with music and entertainment by Meredith and special guests, a major prize for the best dressed individual and best couple costume, plus spot prizes to be won throughout the night. The Halloween Ball will be held on Friday, October 31 at the Shamrock Hotel, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm. Tickets are $80 with beer, wine, soft drink and finger food provided. THE Bendigo Young Professionals Network is aiming to change young peoples’ views on making time for fitness. A “corporate active” breakfast at Rocks on Rosalind next Thursday morning at 7am will hear from Bendigo’s fitness expert Arj Perera. The Human Mechanics director has been in the industry for more than 10 years, including work as a personal training lecturer at Victoria University and rehabilitation specialist. “It’s about trying to find a balance and making time to do things outside of our careers,” Mr Perera said.

“As young professionals, we need to aim for longevity and not just short-term gains in our careers.” Mr Perera believes many young professionals are too focused on trying to get ahead in their careers, putting too little focus on their health and putting their bodies on the back burner “I’ve trained many CEOs and company directors in Melbourne,” he said. “Yes, they’re successful but they’ve worked such long hours by the time they’re 50 years old their bodies are basically broken.

BENDIGO BEAT Tradies targeted in tool theft spree TRADIES are being warned to lock up their trailers after a spate of thefts across the city. Locals are warned to secure trailers parked on the side of the road, or lock them up in a garage where possible. Police said it is important to secure their valuables to reduce the risk of theft. POLICE found a stolen high-end bike from Spring Gully on the weekend. The offender has been prosecuted but the owner of the bike is yet to be identified. Bendigo Police are appealing for anyone who has lost their bike to contact Constable Troy Young at station on 5448 1300. The owner will be able to reclaim their missing bike with proof of ownership. BENDIGO Police are calling for witnesses or victims of a series of thefts from motor vehicles on Sunday morning. A 17-year-old teenager and a 32-year-old man were arrested and charged

for robbery, assault and three counts of thefts from motor vehicles. The caucasian teenager was wearing a black beanie, a white singlet and a grey hoodie. The older man was seen wearing a grey cap, a black hoodie, a red t-shirt and grey pants. The men, riding BMXs in the CBD, were seen looking into cars and taking small amounts of cash in the Bendigo and CBD area at 2am. The men threatened a man in the CBD and is believed to have threatened other people in Rosalind Park. Both men are known to police and had a firearm during the incident. Three thefts from cars, on Church Street in Kangaroo Flat, Hargreaves Street near the tram depot and one in the CBD occurred during the spree. Police want to speak to the owners of the cars that were broken into. A 47-year-old Bendigo woman will be charged with numerous thefts of petrol and number plate

thefts. The woman is believed to have committed thefts over a seven-month period, with a value totalling more than $1000. The woman was interviewed following a police investigation. Acting Inspector Craig Gaffee said Victoria Police were acutely aware of petrol drive-off thefts and took appropriate action when required. THE CFA attended three suspicious car fires on Monday night. A Holden Commodore was alight on a residential property in Long Gully at 11.30pm. The car was parked in the front yard of the Derwent Drive home but the fire was controlled within 10 minutes of CFA attendance. Two cars were also on fire in the driveway of a California Gully home early on Tuesday morning. The vehicles were alight at 2.45am at the Oswald Street and Whitfield Court property. Four CFA trucks attended the incident and

Greens on attack BENDIGO West Greens candidate John Brownstein has hit out at the effect pokies are having on the region’s high poverty levels. Mr Brownstein said $46.2 million was lost to gambling in the Bendigo region last financial year. “Bendigo does have an amount of poverty and yet we are seeing $46 million per annum leave our community into the pockets of the gaming machine industry,” he said. “The figures are staggering. With problem gamblers losing around 40 per cent of that, this equates to around $36,500 per problem gambler. “The harm to people and the social costs

employers,” he said. “There are thousands of people affected in Bendigo and this harm needs to be stopped.” Despite previous opposition from both major political parties, Mr Brownstein said the Greens would introduce $1 bet limits per spin with other measures, if elected on November 29. “This would significantly reduce the harm done and we won’t give up on this,” he said. “The benefits some get out of the pokies cannot justify the huge social costs inflicted on our community. “I will do what I can to reduce the harm done and prevent further poker machine expansion in Bendigo West.”

Ways to improve THE front page headline, “Roar Power”, Bendigo Weekly, October 10, mayor Lyons’ bid for a consecutive term raises the issue of who is to be the next mayor as if it means something. If only it did. Recent mayoral performances count for little. No powers seem attached to the role. It’s got to be more than a photo opportunity and public relations ceremonial role for $100,000 plus. Candidates, councillors Lyons and Williams, firmly established as compliant subservient councillors, prefer to float with senior officers rather than tenaciously question officers and represent residents. Unfortunately, I believe the best candidate and peoples’ choice, Cr Peter Cox, has been sidelined. Senior officers and soft councillors, cannot handle Cr Cox’s insight, honesty, in-depth analysis, and capacity to challenge shallow council reports. You might imagine our council operates something like a public company; the mayor being chairman and leader of the board, and in concert with councillors, setting goals, strategic direction and the like. Sadly, this would be a mistaken view. In reality, the executive council officers play the role of board of directors formulating council goals, strategies, and plans, which councillors rubberstamp. The same management team then implement their own plan, and we pay with excessive rate rises. Undue power is in the hands of unelected almost unaccountable employees. No public company would permit this. The executive officers are able to have their way because the majority of councillors, despite election promises, get sucked into the senior staff team. It is easier to ride along than challenge an entrenched system. Some councillors simply do not have the skills. It raises the question – what meaningful role do councillors actually perform? It could be much better. There are many ideas for improvement and to have senior staff more accountable. Happy to share them with ratepayers. Contact me via email at backhaus1@ bigpond.com. Michael McKenzie, Bendigo

Tennis misses out I WOULD like to take issue with the article published last week entitled “Plus for Netball” about the $100,000 funding boost given to the South Bendigo Football Netball Club

to upgrade the netball courts at Harry Trot Oval. There was no mention in this article about the fact that the “netball courts” are currently working tennis courts, and that the Kennington Tennis Club who are responsible for the courts have rejected the upgrade plan the funding has been given for. The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Damian Drum, argues that the money will be a boost for regional clubs. This is not entirely correct because the boost for the netball club will come at the expense of the local tennis club. The tennis courts may appear to the minister to be “outdated”, however they provide a valuable community space that is accessible for those not interested in participating in an organised sport such as netball. I have no interest in playing netball. I do value physical activity and I appreciate having a place where I can take my kids to have a hit of tennis at minimal cost and when it suits me. The proposed upgrade of the tennis courts to netball courts will further limit options for people like myself who do not want to be involved with a football/netball club but enjoy being physically active and playing sport non-competitively. Alexa Perrin, Bendigo

Not controversial I AM appalled at the description of two Greater Bendigo councillors described as “controversial”. Does it mean that if someone has another opinion from (editor) Anthony Radford they are labelled as controversial? As I understand, in Australia we are free to have an opinion of our own. Is it because they voted against the incomplete planning application for the mosque? They have every right to take whatever decision they believe is good for the community. I believe the other councillors who approved the application have absolutely no idea of the implications of their decision. Heather Stanmore, Junortoun

Common sense investment THE recent $800,000 upgrade to the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre’s Huntly facility is good news for CFA volunteers and this community. Practical training at times and places to suit the needs of volunteers was a major issue raised by VFBV and volunteers during the 2011 Jones In-

quiry into the effects of CFA’s arrangements on volunteers, and CFA and government commitment to having this kind of training capacity in regional areas is a sign that the voices of the volunteers are being heard. The upgrade to facilities at Huntly is a common-sense investment in the professional emergency response skills of the CFA volunteers who protect this community every day and night of the year. CFA volunteers serve in roles at every level of emergency management, from crewing the fire trucks, to leading strike teams and managing major incidents across Victoria. Any investment in upgrading our access to quality training facilities close to home is appreciated. Peter Thompson, District 2 President Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria

Council needs to upgrade WE have now lived in Flora Hill for 53 years and when our children were young the South Bendigo Recreation Reserve was an important focus for our lives – tennis, netball, Scouts and public meetings at the Progress Association Hall. In the 1960s to 1980s it was a very active place, night and day. All sections of Scouts were represented and met regularly, and all courts were in regular use. Tennis training, social games and competitions were enjoyed by young and old, enhanced later by flood-lit courts. Much parent volunteer work went

into the Nissen Scout Hall, new floor and wall linings and even painting the roof. But what now – Scouts possibly down to one section, little or no use of the netball court and only intermittent use of the tennis courts? Two important questions arise – can Greater Bendigo council and the local community be proactive in reinvigorating the use of these facilities? Can council arrange for an upgrade of the exterior of the Progress Hall and Scout Hall – both in urgent need of maintenance and external painting? Your response please council and councillors? DH Elvery, Flora Hill

Leave golf course alone THE Residential Strategy is to be on the next Greater Bendigo council meeting agenda on October 22. This is the opportunity for our current council officers to elect and vote to have reference to the Quarry Hill Golf Course as an “investigative” area for residential housing to be deleted from the Residential Strategy. The Quarry Hill Golf Club maintains this open space, a legacy and vision from Sir John Quick in 1922, for not only its membership base and many green fee players, but for the public who use the course for walking and running exercise, walking dogs and bird watching. This is at the club’s own expense

and many volunteer hours; the council not providing funds towards ongoing mowing, water and irrigation costs. The golf club offers affordable golf to the community in the heart of Bendigo. The area is also a defendable space to protect the city from a southwest wind fire outbreak. Other members of the public who have had submissions into the strategy have had the opportunity to address the council and councillors, personally, on their submissions, however objectors to having the golf course land into the strategy have not. We have also not received any follow-up correspondence on our submissions from council on how they are being looked upon. The council’s own planning office have advised that this Crown Land is not required for housing yet senior council officials have still placed the course as an “investigation area” onto the housing strategy. It was again confirmed to the club the area was not required for housing by a phone call to planning last week on October 8. We ask the public to support us as we continue to keep Quarry Hill Golf Course open as a public space for all its current users, maintaining the neighbourhood character and for future generations. In the current health awareness arena we are in it seems a double standard to delete such a gem of recreational land. Sandra Davey, Kangaroo Flat

The two Australias By TONY SPURLING President St Vincent De Paul Society Bendigo Region

IN today’s environment where it is popular to blame people for their poverty, we should instead salute these people for their courage and have the humility to listen to their stories and to learn from them. The truth told by people on the margins speaks louder than the lies told about them. It has been more than 10 years since the St Vincent De Paul Society published a report on The Two Australias. Sadly, all of the things that angered us then anger us now. SVDP members continue to witness the daily struggle of the people in our midst who have been left out or pushed out. We continue to see the denial of fundamental human rights such as the right to appropriate housing, employment and education: a place to live, a place to work a place to learn. They also see the unconscionable persistence of health inequalities due to disadvantage.

Poverty is so often spoken of as not enough to eat. It is more. The woman and her kids leaving a situation of violence and forced to experience homelessness, the Aboriginal man or women who has spent many years living with racism and exploitation and who is now facing health problems and the strong possibility of premature death, the young man or women who had

to be excluded, from the First Peoples to the new arrivals, and everyone in between who has been locked out of the prosperity for which Australia is known. In the years since the Two Australias report was released, Australia’s population has grown by more than four million, while our unemployment rate has fallen. We have weathered the Global Financial Crisis well and now have one

Poverty is so often spoken of as not enough to eat. It is more. access to few, if any, opportunities and attended a woefully under-resourced school and who is now struggling to find work, the asylum seeker who came to our shores with only a nugget of hope in his pocket, the family who has lost its source of income because of injury or health. Sometimes, we despair at government and common attitudes, but this is nothing compared to the cruelty and humiliation meted out to the people who continue

of the strongest economies in the world. Our GDP is high, and our cities are consistently rated amongst the most liveable. However, despite economic growth and increasing living standards for many Australians, poverty is still on the rise. At present, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 13 per cent of the population is living in relative poverty. This translates to almost three million Australians.

Indeed, every day members of the St Vincent De Paul Society witness the fact that in today’s society there remains a large group of Australians who are consistently disadvantaged in a range of ways. Every day, people living in poverty have to overcome a number of structural and personal barriers that make surviving difficult and thriving impossible. These Australians may have very low-paying jobs with insecure and inadequate hours, or no paid work at all. They often have poor health or are living with a disability. They struggle to pay their bills or to be able to afford groceries and other essentials. Many live in insecure housing or are forced into a state of homelessness in one of the world’s most prosperous nations. For these individuals, the feelings of exclusion, isolation and “being forgotten“ are common. Whether measured in terms of real income, social exclusion or multiple deprivation factors, this gap between the two Australias is clearly visible and, arguably, increasing.

Grand plan for a tan

dear dotty...

Steve hunts out the right look for the open air

W

E had a burst of sun last weekend as you know, and as I was out and about in Bendigo I decided to drag the shorts out from the depths of the wardrobe. They had seen some action in Cairns in the past year, in fact I bought them there, so they were not pristine but had that comfortable lived-in look. I went to see Billy the Snap in Long Gully and his first comment was he would put his sunglasses on. I don’t think he was referring to my white legs, but he could have been. The glare was scary, and the pale legs and pale freckles did nothing to project the rugged outdoorsy type I wish to be. I decided there and then to put some time in the sun doing manly things. Luckily the grass is starting to push through a bit, so manfully I removed the grader blade from the tractor and put on the slasher. Though I say it in a sentence, there was considerable struggle involving careful work with my Blunnies, but after not too much time I was pushing in

the final lynch pin. The tractor has a cabin roof, so my head was out of the sun, but my pale, white legs were out in their full glory while I rode around for a couple of hours cutting grass. There was a job to do, and I enjoyed doing it. I parked the tractor, moved some firewood and cut some washing line props from some leftover wood. The outdoorsman in full action mode. All of those rays on my l egs must have made a difference. Come Monday morning

and my arms and face had turned a gentle brown, but to my horror the legs remained bright white. This was impossible, maybe the freckles had darkened, but my pommy-white legs were as pale as the driven snow. Surely science could have helped out with my desire for a darker leg. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall, alert as ever, suggested I visit a spray tan salon, just for my legs. Now it just so happens the Bendigo Magazine is part of the same publishing group as the Weekly, and the bronzed gods

and goddesses swan around the same halls as us, I reckon a word in the right ear could get me a tip on the perfect brown legs. I turned on ABC TV to watch the weather on Monday night but the forecast was for a cold week. But Jane Bunn was presenting the weather and there is hope for another sunbake in our area this weekend. That or I will have to raid the cupboards at the Bendigo Magazine on the hunt for the right browning product. Twitter@stevekendall1

Dear Dotty, Having been bitten by a red-back spider as an eightyear-old, the spider phobia has never left me. When visiting friends that involves sitting on outdoor furniture, I am obliged to turn over the allotted chair to ensure no webs or nasties are in residence. It is a fact, the removal of the offensive target can be an embarrassment to both my hostess and myself. How do I defuse this predicament? Madaline, Strathdale Dear Madaline, Defusing the situation can be difficult. What can you say as you look under the chairs? Any lucky numbers? Rather than minimise the problem you have every right to shout it from the highest hill. Spiders have hairy legs and beady eyes. While St Patrick was driving all the snakes out of Ireland (he used a B-Double) he should have included spiders as well and put Australia on his itinerary while he was at it. Spiders corner you in the shower recess and run towards you whenever you try to get out. They drop from the ceiling and land on your shoulder and smile at you. They wander slowly across your windscreen as you’re doing 120 clicks down the freeway. My personal best spider story was the night I walked into the kitchen and turned on the furry light switch. FURRY

LIGHT SWITCH! My advice to you, dear Madaline, is to take an open approach to going to outdoor functions. Have a car precede you with flashing lights, just like they do for the Queen or the prime minister. When the car arrives at your host’s house, two men then rush inside and aggressively spray the outdoor furniture with DDT. That done, you proffer your bottle of wine, sit down, relax and enjoy. Dear Dotty, I have often wondered as I drive into town where Kangaroo Flat got its name from? Derek Hi Derek, You and I should get together sometime. Derek and Dotty sounds good together. Now I too have speculated over Kangaroo Flat’s nomenclature. Two thoughts. First the land out there is relatively flat and the burgomasters must have noticed a whole lot of kangaroos hopping about. But the version I prefer is that people kept running over them with their cars and squashed them flat. Whenever this happened someone would call the police station and say “kangaroo down” but it happened so often the area became known as Kangaroo Flat. Twitter: @DearDotty

Sunny outlook EN years into their country careers and the Sunny Cowgirls are still going strong. Sophie and Celeste Clabburn named the band aged 14 and 10, and always said they’d be singing and touring as country singers. Seven albums in and they seem to be right, with their latest My Old Man being a self-produced album of cover songs. “The albums are very much us and what we believe in,” Sophie said. “Nothing is contrived about it, we are country girls, we grew up on a farm and love country music, we sing about the bush

and the people and Australia and we love what we do. “There is nothing fake about it, we won’t be changing for anyone anytime soon.” Sophie said the pair always had a pretty strong stance on the way they do things, and a clear idea of what they wanted to do. “In the beginning we wore the hats and the boots and the jeans, and we had people saying ‘maybe you should ditch the hats and put on skirts’ but we just said ‘no, this is us’. “People were not sure how it would go down, but it worked because we were like

WINE producer from the Heathcote region has been presented with two international awards. Eppalock Ridge specialising in high quality red wines has been awarded a Gold Medal by a panel of judges at the China Wine and Spirits Awards 2014. They have also been awarded a Silver Medal at The Decanter Asia Wine Awards 2014. Both competitions are conducted in Hong Kong. Judges on the panels are known as the powerhouse of decision makers in the Hong Kong and Chinese wine markets – including importers, distributors, sommeliers, hoteliers and retailers. The CWSA awards are said to be the most powerful endorsement of quality and suitability for the Chinese market.

“It’s really important for us to be recognised as a winner at the CWSA and Decanter, as the most important brands in the world send samples to Hong Kong for these blind tastings and it is the absolute highest level of competition,” Eppalock Ridge winemaker Rod Hourigan said.

“Most of the competitors were wines from large winemaking companies from around the world including Australia, France and Italy. “More Australian wines are being imported into China and are tipped to increase by 50 per cent in the next three years.”

Stop the snoring

O one wants to sleep next to a person who snores. Couples may have got used to their partner’s snoring, but most, if given the chance, would eliminate their partner’s noisy breathing habits forever. Is snoring normal or is there a reason to worry? Can people stop snoring? Snoring can be either harmless or a sign of a serious medical condition. With regular breathing, air passes through the nose then to the back of the throat that houses the soft palate, uvula and tongue. When awake, muscles hold the airway open; when asleep, muscles relax but the airway stays open. Snoring is the coarse sound of obstructed breathing. Instead of the muscles relaxing and the airways staying open during sleep, the soft tissues in the nose and throat vibrate caused by a partial obstruction. Therefore snoring is not really normal but a physical abnormality. Although it can’t be stopped or cured it can be controlled, according to Sleep Lab. But not all snorers are the same, which means particular control methods apply to different people, after all people snore differently and at various intensities. Snoring can basically be grouped into two classifications. Primary Snoring with loud upper airway breathing sounds without signs of apnoea or cessation of breathing, or snoring that indicates Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) with breathing obstruction or absence of breathing. Bendigo Sleep Lab provide a range of

sleep test services and patient services for the treatment of sleep apnoea, including an inhome sleep test service with supervised sleep apnoea tests. Bendigo Sleep Lab providing professional solutions and treatment services to clients with sleep disorders. Phone 5447 8827 or view the web at www.bendigosleep.com.au for more details.

There are still vacancies for next year’s intake at several preschools in the Bendigo area

A sound beginning

W

ITH 2015 fast approaching many families may not yet have enrolled their child in kindergarten or pre-kindergarten or they simply may not be aware of how little it costs. Loddon Mallee Preschool Association encompassing 24 preschools throughout the region, encourages every parent to enrol their child in kindergarten to give them a head start into their years of education. LMPA chief executive officer Phil Hocking believes many parents do not realise just how affordable kindergarten is and with 15 hours funding per student having been confirmed for next year, there is still the opportunity to secure a place.. “Our kindergarten programs mean that children could be enrolled in either three, five hour or two, seven and a half hour sessions dependent on availability,” Mr Hocking said. “This is a ideal opportunity for

your children to be enrolled in a structured play based educational program, delivered by qualified teachers, to springboard them into their first year of primary school. “For busy parents we also have extended care available at South Bendigo two days per week through to 6pm. “Parents also need to check with us to see what subsidies they might be entitled to, to further reduce the cost – it might even be free.” Even parents with a three-yearold year next year are encouraged to consider enrolling in three-yearold pre-kindergarten. Pre-kindergarten is an ideal opportunity for children to spend a couple of hours socialising and playing as well as becoming familiar with the preschool in preparation for starting kindergarten the following year. NE of the most important parts about getting someone to do your garden is being able to communicate your needs in a free and open atmosphere. Paul, from Epsom Complete Garden Care, is a friendly man who is also very skilled in gardening. As Paul says, “Gardening is a personal thing. “I listen to my clients and we work together.” Paul is not only able to listen to what you need for your garden but can give advice as to what plants would be suitable. “I help customers to develop their

garden as well,” Paul said. “For example, as we are heading into summer it‘s time to develop strategies as to what should be done.” Other work Paul does is regular garden maintenance including lawn mowing, weeding and rubbish removal. He is also a former arborist – and an expert on advising you on what trees to grow, how to maintain them, tree pruning and stump removal. OU will still experience excellent customer service at Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning, now owned and operated by a well known Bendigo family. Rod and Samantha Hamilton have recently bought Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning, formally Mr Clean Bendigo, meaning it is again a family-run concern. The Hamiltons thank David and Margo Hague for the exciting opportunity to buy their successful business and wish them well in retirement. Rod, Sam and their staff all have current police and working with children checks so they can be trusted in your home or business. Rod, who is Bendigo born and bred, has been in the floor furnishing industry for 40 years so it’s a natural and logical transition to window furnishings. Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning specialises in cleaning blinds and curtains along with timber venetians and plantation

shutters, which are cleaned on site. Other blinds including venetians, romans and mesh are all removed, taken to their workshop for ultrasonic cleaning before being re-hung. Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning also offer an added specialised cleaning service of upholstery, including leather, mattresses and all those hard to reach ceiling fans, lights, air-conditioning and heating vents, making them an ideal choice when selling or letting, where presentation is the key. Tools of the trade L

ast week I described in some detail the process which had to be undertaken in order to be able to smoke an opium pipe. There is the equipment – the pipe itself, the saddle that fitted to the pipe and the ceramic bowl that slotted neatly into the saddle. Various tools were also required, tiny metal scoops, a small metal spatula for heating and consolidating the opium into a tiny blob of gum above a glass protected flamed heating lamp. The heating lamp was also used for heating the ceramic smoking bowl in which the small blob of opium gum would be deposited. The heating of the bowl, attached to the pipe, allowed the tiny quantity of opium to partially vapourise inside the bowl. When the smoker drew on the opium pipe the vapourising opium gum would then finally enter the smoker’s mouth and down into the lungs. A first-time smoker, if they inhaled too heavily or quickly, would rapidly become ill and often begin to vomit. The euphoric effect upon the smoker became almost immediate and quite soon they would fall asleep. Now we can understand why a pipe was taken in the laying position. As many of the local Chinese were far from rich, their smoking paraphernalia was rustic in nature. The illustrated items all have

a local area connection. In the late 1950s I found this wonderful knotty timber opium pipe near the weatherboard vegetable shed just off Thunder Street. The locality of the shed was between the gas works railway siding and where the Chinese brick kiln lay hidden. The pipe was underneath a lot of discarded and abandoned material. The ceramic opium bowls which were to be fitted onto the pipe were antiquated but brand new antiquated stock which lay at the back of the business of Sun Ack Goon in Bridge Street. The brass saddle for attaching the bowl to the pipe was from a bamboo pipe which had practically disintegrated and was too deteriorated to rescue. Unfortunately there is no rustic, simple heating lamp which would have matched this poorer person’s smoking kit. Opium for smoking has to be specially prepared and the art of doing this has almost been forgotten, so successful has been the efforts to eliminate the

smoking of this narcotic. Unfortunately it is the opium derivatives, such as heroin, far more dangerous, insidious and lethally addictive, which is among the scourge of today’s drug problem.

historic: The palm trees enhance the setting at Marong Shire Hall.

Trees add to the heritage

T

he removal of trees in the Sacred Heart Cathedral Square has highlighted an important heritage issue: the value of a building’s surroundings or setting. In the early days of heritage legislation in Victoria only historic buildings were considered for protection. Today trees can be included if they are assessed as being important to the heritage of the place. In the case of the removal of trees in front of the Cathedral, the trees were in poor condition and their removal provides an opportunity to improve the setting of the Cathedral and open up views to this impressive building. However, it is more usual that the presence of mature trees enhances the setting of an historic building as well as providing deep shade in summer. While historic trees can sometimes cause structural problems if planted too close to a heritage building, generally it is best to plan to retain them. - Megan McDougall

selling a cat or dog?

SIEVED TOP SOIL

To allow traceability of sellers of pets, it is now an offence to advertise the sale of a dog or cat unless the microchip identification number of the animal is included in the advertisement notice. A registered domestic animal business may use its Council business registration number as an alternative. A penalty of up to 5 penalty units (around $600) can be issued by Authorised Officers of Council, RSPCA or Department of Primary Industries for advertising the sale of a cat or dog without a microchip. WEEKLY SPORT

Oliver back in the game FORMER Bendigo Football Netball League CEO and Castlemaine legend Steven Oliver will be back in Bendigo football next year, after being appointed coach of South Bendigo for the 2015 season. Oliver, who kicked over 1000 goals in a decorated career with Castlemaine, takes over the position from Neale Torpey and Bloods legend Peter Tyack. The former league CEO has spent 18 months away from football after taking on the role of general manager at Bendigo Golf Club, but is ready to jump back into the action. “Footy has always been a big part of my life, I saw a fair bit of football this past season and thought I might still have a bit to offer in the game,” Oliver said. “I have known quite a num-

ber of people through my time at South Bendigo, I think they are certainly a good club and they have a lot of exciting things going on with their move to Harry Trott so it is a good time to be involved.” Oliver’s sons, James and Nick, both played senior football with the Magpies this year, and Oliver himself turned back the clock and pulled on the boots in a reserves contest for the black and white. Ironically, that game came against South Bendigo late in the season at the QEO, but playing once more was not the main factor that stoked his desire to be involved with the game. “I think watching purely as a spectator probably got me wanting to be involved a bit more. Playing this year, if you could even

RETURN: Steven Oliver will coach South Bendigo. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN call it that, had little impact on the decision,” he said. “It is a big challenge, most people know where South finished last year, but I think they were more competitive for the most part than those results show. “There are certainly some good people and players around the club, it looks like there will be a few talented kids coming in, too, so that all bodes well, and I’m really looking forward to getting to

know the boys more.” Meanwhile, reigning premiers Strath Storm have laded a major signing with Kallen Geary joining the 2014 champions. The 23-year-old is the brother of Storm captain Shannon and premiership player Daniel, as well as St Kilda defender Jarryn. A two-time Bendigo Pioneers club champion, he most recently played with Southport in the NEAFL.

Harrower hoping for WNBL three-peat W From Page 36 That lack of continuity in the season’s lead-up was enough to give Harrower pause heading into Saturday’s grand final re-match. “I think it is just going to be one of those things that is determined by who comes together better on the day,” he said. “I’m not sure whether we are in that sort of shape at the moment or that frame of mind. I am a little bit concerned about going up there. “When we went up there last year, even though we had injuries, I still felt good about

getting a win because we were in pretty decent form, this year we aren’t taking any form up there at all, so it is a little bit unknown at this stage.” Also unknown is just who will start at point guard for the Spirit in its opening game. With Kristi Harrower’s future uncertain and Kelly Wilson out due to injury, the starting role will likely fall to either rising star Tessa Lavey or longtime backup Jane Chalmers. “Right now, it’s certainly between Tessa and Jane, we will make a decision about that as it gets closer,” Harrower said on Wednesday. “They both had good games at the weekend and

they both had poor games. It could be said that Tessa is the better point guard but Jane knows our stuff better, so we will make that assessment after training this week.” As for the Spirit’s fortunes this season, Harrower believes his team can deliver that elusive third consecutive title, a feat only two teams have achieved in the past. “There is no question this team is good enough, we certainly have the talent within our group,” he said. “I don’t think we are going to be great early, we will be a better team in the second half of the year, and it will take us a while to make the adjust-

ments especially if Kristi does not play. “We have still got the personnel to win the championship, you do need a lot of things to go your way and the league is massively strong this season, so I’m not sitting here saying it will happen by any stretch. “At any high level it is very rare to see a team win three in a row, teams are always coming after you and it will be no exception for us this year.” Bendigo’s season begins against the Townsville Fire at 8pm (AEDT) on Saturday, before the Spirit returns to the Bendigo Stadium next Saturday to take on Canberra.

SOME of the world’s best netballers will be in action at Bendigo Stadium on Sunday when the Australian Diamonds take on England in the first match of a two-Test series. The Diamonds are coming off a win over New Zealand in the recently completed Constellation Cup, but will face a tough test against the current world number three. The team will be welcomed at a civic reception at the town hall tonight ahead of the clash after flying in from the final Constellation Cup age in New Zealand. A sold-out crowd is expected at the game, which gets under way at the Bendigo Stadium at 2pm on Sunday. Stadium chief executive officer Jason Wallace said this week that although the stadium was privileged to be hosting the event, it highlighted the need for the stadium’s planned expansion. “We are really excited about hosting the game on Sunday, especially with Australia ranked as the world’s number-one team,” Wallace said. “We have had to bring in temporary seating for the game, we are expecting around 2500 people which is fantastic, but plenty also missed out on tickets. “I have no doubt that if we had the 4000-seat stadium, we would be selling it out. We would certainly love to have that funding available “We need a maximum of $8 million from any form of government and we are across the line. “The funding from Labor is appreciated and certainly well received but if we can squeeze a bit more out of the Regional Development Fund or whatever it may be, we are on for a 4000 seat facility right here in Bendigo.” The magic number for the stadium is $8m, which would be enough for the project to get started. Not only will it see more high-profile sporting events in town, but headline music acts and business conferences are also what the stadium is planning to be able to host. “The feasibility studies that we have had done clearly show we would have the capacity to host more of these types of events, which does not only incorporate sporting events,” Wallace said. “Netball Australia, the Melbourne Vixens and (NBL club) Melbourne United have all shown a lot of interest in playing more matches here if we had that 4000-seat arena. “It would also benefit our local sporting groups massively, which is a huge part of what we do here at the stadium as well, so from our perspective it is certainly all positive. We would just love to be able to get the process started.”

WEEKLY SPORT Emu Valley Cricket Association – Division 1

Round one sees centuries Fixtures

CENTURIES to Sedgwick’s Matt Dwyer and Mandurang’s Matt Giri highlighted round one of the Emu Valley Cricket Association’s 2014-15 season. Dwyer crafted an unbeaten ton as the Rams put on a first innings batting display against Spring Gully, scoring at more than 6.5 runs per over to finish with 3/267. Zac Poole (48) made a quick start for the Rams, before Dwyer and Dustin Elliott – bowled by Liam Pilcher for 70 – put on a stand of 138 for the third wicket. Spring Gully got off to a horror start in reply, losing openers Jarrod Quirk and Des Gilmore with only four runs on the board. Only Andrew Renato (27 not out) got out of the teens as Lucas Baldwin and the irrepressible Dwyer both took three wickets to dismiss the Crows for 112. At Marong Links Oval, 82run partnerships for both the second and third wickets were the building blocks in Mandurang’s comfortable win over hosts Marong. Standout batsman Matt Giri featured in both stands as he smashed 108, combining with Cain Ladiges (41) and Warrick Behrens (23) as the visitors notched up 7/224 from their 40 overs. Duane Anderson took four wickets for Marong, who

only had Scott Ross (45) fire with the bat as they struggled to 7/146 from their 40 overs. Mick Healy was best with the ball for Mandurang, taking 3/22, while James Pietromonaco claimed two scalps. United claimed a win in the re-match of last season’s grand final, skittling Emu Creek for 74 before making 8/219 at Ewing Park. The Emus’ day got underway in nightmare fashion, losing skipper Daniel Chamberlain for a duck, and it only got worse from there. Fellow opener Brad Rowe top scored with 19, but led by Josh White (3/4) and Luke O’Sullivan (2/18) United took nine wickets in the space of 42 runs to dismiss the Emus after just 24.3 overs. In reply, the Tigers breezed past their target on the back of opener Andy Collins (58), while Dooley Niemann made a valuable 42 not out.

Brendan Morris was more than serviceable with the ball for Emu Creek, with figures of 4/36. West Bendigo had a 104run opening stand between Trav O’Connell and Dion Prange setting the stage for a big win over fellow 2013/14 finallist Golden Gully. O’Connell (72) and Prange (39) dominated early for the Redbacks before Nick Coles (41) and Ken Bell (28 not out) kept the score ticking over for the home side, who finished with 5/202. Chasing 203 for victory, only one of the Cobras opening seven batsmen made it out of double figures – number eight Eddie Peaslee top scored with 20 – as the Redbacks sent the visitors packing for 75. Brad McHugh took an economical 3/14 from 6 overs, while Prange, Gurpreet Singh and Dale Warren took two wickets apiece.

Challenge taken MAKING the Strathdale Park Tennis Club more attractive for new members is mission number one for new club professional Jim Widdowson. Widdowson, who moved from Melbourne to Bendigo this year, has taken on the role as club coach and is at the forefront of the push to revitalise the club. “It’s an exciting challenge, we have great facilities here but they really haven’t been utilised fully in the past,” he said. “We are welcoming anyone of any age to come

along and get involved. We are offering free memberships until the end of this year that are valid until August 2015. “Anyone who signs up for a membership gets a free introductory lesson, as well. As much as it is to get people involved with our club, it is great to see people enjoying what is a great game for all ages.” The club is holding open days over the weekend of October 25 and 26, from noon to 2pm on Saturday and 2pm to 4pm on Sunday. Widdowson said anyone

is welcome to tour the club’s facilities, as well as participate in games running on the day. “We’ll have games for adults and kids, a sausage sizzle and have the clubrooms open, and we are encouraging anyone to get down and be involved,” he said. “We really want to make the club as good as it can be, and are welcoming anyone from members to committee to be involved with the club going forward.” More information on the club can be found at www. strathdaleparktc.com.au.

Three of the best By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO Spirit coach Bernie Harrower has just about done it all in 21 years of coaching basketball. He won five championships with the Bendigo Lady Braves in 13 years at the helm, in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2007. Entering his eighth year of coaching the Spirit, he has won two titles, both in the past two years. This Women’s National Basketball League season Harrower has an opportunity to achieve a feat he has not yet been able to – win three titles in a row – and believes he has a squad capable of doing just that.

TEAM TRIPLE: Tayla Roberts, Chelsea Aubrey and Belinda Snell.

Bendigo starts this year’s title defence just as it started last season’s, taking on its grand final combatant from the season before on their home floor. Last year the Spirit emerged from Townsville with the win column empty, this year they will aim to get their season off to the perfect start in one of the league’s most difficult venues at Townsville RSL Stadium. Bendigo has kept the majority of its team together from last season – adding Australian Opal Belinda Snell as well as Tayla Roberts – but only trained for the first time as a complete group on Tuesday.
